The best portable hard drive. External hard drives: reliability and durability. Best for business: CalDigit T4 RAID.

Somehow, you have run out of storage on your hard drive, your computer or phone, and you need to store your photos, music and other files somewhere. So what's now?

Depending on your individual needs, you can choose several types of external hard drives. A professional photographer or videographer may need something with a large capacity, while a student may need something portable. And someone running a small business may depend on storage capacity, durability, and transmission time. If you are still not sure which one to buy, read on to find the years.

If your data that you want to save is limited to office-type files, a capacity of 1 GB is sufficient to contain thousands of such files. Finally, if you are thinking about saving video, which is the most devouring space, it would be better to choose external hard   drive with increased capacity beyond 1 TB. Indeed, the size of a movie in high resolution can reach 1 GB, therefore, if hDD   will serve as a video library; therefore, it will require a very large capacity.

Computer compatible

It's nice to have a large capacity external hard drive, but it should be checked for compatibility with your computer. This requires an interface check. To transfer data from a computer to a hard drive or vice versa, the interface acts as an intermediary.

Best External Hard Drives 2017

In this article, you will learn about the best external hard disks   2017, for different types of tasks that can be claimed from an external drive.

Best overall: Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive

This drive has a large capacity (2 TB, 3 TB, 4 TB, 5 TB, 6 TB and 8 TB versions), and it is fast, flexible and affordable. It is compatible with Mac and Windows right out of the box and includes the Seagate Dashboard backup utility. Included software package   allows users of social networks to make the most of their media libraries, upload photos to Facebook or Flickr, or videos to YouTube. It will also allow you to download photos and videos from these sites in large volumes. Seagate Dashboard allows users to set up automatic backup when connecting the drive.

The transfer rate will depend on the latter. There are currently four interfaces that allow transmission. The most complete external hard drives are equipped with two or three interfaces simultaneously. Noise hard drive   at work sometimes annoying some people. This noise is due to the speed of rotation of the trays on the axis of the hard drive. The higher, the more the external hard drive will consume electricity, heat up and make noise. However, if you need to use your hard drive on the desktop, and it is noisy, think about placing it at a distance with a longer mounting and equipping it with a box.

The look is simple and standard for one external storage device, slightly larger than a standard 3.5-inch internal hard drive. The chassis is made of plastic, but looks solid enough. There are vents on the side and bottom for easy airflow.

This drive has a spindle speed of 7,200 rpm, a write speed of 95.5 Mbit / s and a read speed of 127.0 Mbit / s. Overall, the Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive is a great versatile option with simple functionality, easy setup, ease and price, making it affordable for almost everyone.

Thanks to external hard drives   it becomes possible to store all kinds of computer files in a safe place. Moreover, currently there are several options so that everyone can find happiness in this matter. To help you, we have come up with this comparison for external hard drives.

When your computer’s hard drive is nearly full, you should find other places to copy your new files. External storage is the best option available to you. All you have to do is choose the right one, one that can satisfy your real needs. These few lines have been dedicated to teaching you how to use this tool.

Best for fast transfers: Western Digital My Passport

My Passport is an inexpensive drive, but it has better performance than the more expensive competitors, thanks uSB port   3.0 and an excellent disk controller. This drive provides a maximum transfer rate of 174 Mbit / s and a recording of 168 Mbit / s. It is available in sizes from 1 TB to 4 TB. We think it deserves a place on the list of Best External Hard Drives of 2017.

Just plug it into the ports on your computer to examine its contents. These outputs can be on the side, front or back of the laptop. They can exist at 0 or 0 for the latest models. Of course, these parameters depend on the transmission rate.

Let automatic execution begin to facilitate intelligence

After connecting external hard   disk to the computer, a window will appear on the screen spontaneously. Here we have automatic execution. He asked what action should be taken with removable media. You can open it and read its contents. If it does not appear, you must expand the file explorer to find out what is on your device.

This offer weighs a little more 227 grams   and about the same size as the actual competitors, making it one of the smallest and lightest. It is connected to the bus, which means that one cable is used for transmission and power. With an active drive, one blue light is on, and four rubber feet are securely attached to any surface. Western Digital sought to reduce its carbon footprint by using recycled materials for the hull. Although the case is made of plastic, it is still surprisingly durable.

Launch the device to examine its contents.

There are several models that you need to start to see on your computer. But the latest screams do not represent such a team.

Create folders before transferring files

The new external hard drive usually does not have any pre-created folders. To properly organize your files, you need to create one or more files.

Avoid copying software to an external hard drive

You do not need to transfer programs from your device to external media. These software tools will not run on another computer or even on their own, with a few exceptions. However, one should not forget that this action can be held accountable.

Disconnect your hardware with security so as not to lose files

If you delete your external drive   suddenly from your computer, you may lose your files.

These features are specially designed for simplicity. My passport is preloaded with WW SmartWare software. It represents two separate devices when connected - one disk with external storage space and one disk with factory software. The visual interface is intuitive and built-in software makes it easy to install and manage your setup. Backup and search options allow you to configure incremental backups that must be performed each time the drive is connected to a computer or device. Files accidentally deleted from My Passport are easily retrieved, as are older versions of files. The drive provides password protection and 256-bit data encryption.

Small and lightweight portable external hard drives - it's effective method   keep your data in a convenient place, wherever we are. Another considerable advantage is their price, which decreases from year to year. Indeed, today we can easily find an external hard drive of 2 TB less than 100 euros. If you want the device to store a large number of   photos, music, movies, etc. Select a model with at least 500 GB of memory.

If you intend to carry it often with you, it is preferable to use a disc specifically designed to withstand possible bumps and drops. Today, many manufacturers offer models with a metal case to protect them in the event of an accident. Choose this type of case rather than the classic plastic case, which will obviously be less stable.

Best for MacBook: Seagate Backup Plus 4TB

This Seagate 4TB external hard drive is compatible with the Apple Time Machine, making it a great external storage for anyone in the Apple ecosystem. Just download the Seagate Dashboard software to your laptop, and you can drag and drop any movies, photos, songs or other files. The device also has cloud connection and backup in social networkswhich is great for YouTubers who have large files that they want to make for backup or photographers with many photos on Flickr.

Finally, today, most manufacturers have included automatic backup software in their offer, as well as password protection for greater security. This is currently the fastest 1 TB drive. The case is available in 4 colors: dark gray, silver, red and gold. Please note that in addition to the included backup software, the manufacturer offers free 3 GB of storage space in the Cloud.

Its shell is plastic, but stable. The most reliable of this rating! We also appreciate the ability to quickly synchronize and save our data using the dedicated button. The housing is designed to protect against shock and falls. Indeed, this version does not require reformatting on your part, it is ready for use. It is not the smallest or lightest of the discs, although it is still very easy to carry. As for the design, we are dealing with a plastic case, very sober or too big for our taste.

The sleek, portable silver design matches your Macbook and connects to high-speed USB 3.0. There is also no need for any external power supply, it just needs to connect via USB. The lightweight box weighs about 228 grams and is 4.5 inches long, which makes it easy to slip in the carry bag. If you do not need all 4TB, you can also order one of three smaller sizes.

Now, if you look at its price, it will be very profitable. In addition, it is available in three colors: red, black and gray. Although recent desktop computers have a memory capacity of at least 500 GB, buying an external hard drive can expand storage space, transport data, duplicate backups, and at a controlled cost. The use is simple, and recent developments make it a solution for storing our data and much more.

Selection criteria: price, capacity, customer reviews

This compares with the latest advances and selects the best 3 hard drives of the moment. When choosing an external hard drive, the first two criteria may be the budget and storage space. Approximately 70% of external hard drives are sold below this price and have a capacity of more than 120 GB, which still leaves a lot of choice.

Best Portability: Seagate Backup Plus Slim

If we talk about Best External Hard Drives 2017   years, then this option can be noted.

Seagate Backup Plus Slim is an inexpensive, faster, thinner and lighter than its competitors, the best portable external drive suitable for most users. It includes excellent backup software and a free two-year subscription to 200 GB of Microsoft OneDrive online storage. It weighs just 5.6 ounces and is less than half an inch. It is available with a capacity of 500 GB, 1 TB, 1.5 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB, more than enough space for all home music or a video library. It is available in black, silver, blue or red. The aluminum case makes it durable but lightweight. It is connected to a bus with a micro USB 3.0 port that handles data transfer and power. File system   NTFS is compatible with the box with Windows, but a download is available for compatibility with Mac.

What is the speed for an external hard drive?

From this first sorting, a selection of the 3 best external hard drives was selected according to customer reviews and all other characteristics were compared. Given the very limited capabilities of our smartphone and the space required to run applications, this external hard drive is an additional storage space mobile devices. The small size and rechargeable battery with several hours of autonomy allow you to use the drive while driving without an attached branch.

A single-disk drive with USB 3.0 read and write speeds is 121 Mbps and a copy speed of 114 Mbps, making it the best performer in the single drive category. During testing, this drive did not emit noise, vibration or heat. This disk is an excellent option for working on the go and has a sufficiently large capacity to work even with desktops.

Noise, external multimedia hard drives, flash drives

Simultaneous connections may occur, allowing everyone to use the hard drive at the same time. For example, during a long trip, several people can use the same drive to watch movies or listen to music. Therefore, these hard drives are currently largely ideal, and for this reason an external drive of this type was not placed in the comparison table. Other procurement criteria are not insignificant, among which.

Multimedia Hard Drive: This type of hard drive allows you to store data, as well as read videos or music files. Some units are not compatible with all video formats. Noise: a constantly lit drive may heat up and therefore turn on the fan in case of overheating. This can be frustrating if it is used to watch a movie.

Best Strength: LaCie Rugged Raid (4 TB)

The distinctive orange bumpers used by professional photographers for surfing suggest that this drive is really durable. It is dustproof, water resistant and can withstand a five-foot drop. It has a capacity of 4 TB with two hard drives, USB 3.0 and a data transfer rate of 240 Mbps. Unfortunately, strength requires a bit of volume. This drive weighs 1.8 pounds and is 5.7 x 3.5 x 1.2 inches. The main body is coated with brushed aluminum, and the edges of the orange bumper cover. Above the mini-USB port, there is an indicator that indicates when the drive is transferring or writing files, and two small lights to the right of the port indicating which RAID configuration is used. There is also an AC adapter port and a Thunderbolt connection that refills the cover.

Previously, the storage capabilities offered by your computer were pretty much sufficient to support your computer data. Currently, the latter are becoming more voluminous, which requires additional storage space. If you have less space on your computer or consume all kinds of multimedia, the hard drive remains the ideal solution to centralize your files on one device.

External hard drive: essential for secure storage

Faced with a big hard choices   drives, buying the best one that meets your needs is not an easy decision, because a number of options are chosen, since the intended use and budget are saved. We have external hard drives that are ideal for nomads, they come in several formats with capacities from 64 GB to 4 TB. Of course, the larger the capacity, the larger the size of the device. Thus, compact and very light models can be found, or between 500 and 2To.

Embedded software allows users to configure the device. RAID 0 configurations provide a write speed of 240 Mbit / s and a read speed of 230.2 Mbit / s. RAID 1 configurations allow write speeds of 125.1 Mbps and read speeds of 104.4 Mbps.

The decisive criterion for choosing a hard drive: connector

More energy intensive, they are more suitable for sedentary use.

Internal hard drive and multimedia for two specific applications

If you prefer to access your personal data directly on your laptop, the best solution is to get an internal hard drive.

Hard Disk Server: Another Discrete But Interesting Alternative

They are similar to a cloud service, but at home, allowing users to access a single database through local network. If you are traveling for shoots for a client or traveling around the world on a well-deserved vacation, the question of saving your images is crucial. In all respects, this problem is not unique to the digital era: the predominance of silver support did not stop photographers from questioning the archiving and preservation of their films and prints, as well as losing. If it is true that the loss of dematerialized data usually generates a terrible sense of frustration, this can be prevented by copying the data to different media, some of which are backup.

This drive is a great option for adventures that need to work in the field and cannot worry about the security of your hard drive. It is worth noting that in the distribution tests, the SUV crossover swept across this disk, and although it was not fully operational after the test, all the files on the disk were still completely restored.

Best for Business: CalDigit T4 RAID

The CalDigit T4 Raid TB multi-disk RAID system is ideal when you need to go higher than on a single hard drive. Several hard drive settings are available from 4 TB to a massive 20 TB, but the most economical 8 TB system offers an extended 6 TB formatted disk spacemore than enough for large 1080p and 4K video projects, basic music and / or photo and graphic collections and small business databases.

The silver metal case is compact, measuring 6 x 5.5 x 9.5 inches, weighing just 13 pounds. There are cooling ribs molded in the side, and four sleds can be accessed through the front panel. The drives are protected by two-stage locks to prevent accidental sliding of the slide. Two Thunderbolt 2 ports on the rear panel allow you to chain with other Thunderbolt 2 drives. There is a built-in cooling fan, an AC adapter port and a Kensington lock port on the rear panel.

Four 2 TB drives are pre-formatted for a total of 6 TB. The drives can be replaced in the event of a malfunction, or if you just want to change drives. A five year warranty is included.

T4 RAID is accelerated by transferring a 1.2 GB file in just five seconds. The read speed is 527 Mbit / s and the write speed is 502 Mbit / s. This time it is just a little slower than a faster external drive, the SSD is equipped with LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2, but still the speed is excellent for RAID on the hard disk and in combination with the T4 space and bits. We think this drive also deserves a place on the list of Best External Hard Drives 2017.

Runner-Up, Best Overall: Toshiba Canvio Connect II 2TB Portable Hard Drive

While Seagate and Western Digital are gaining fame for external hard drives, Toshiba's Canvio Connect II 2TB portable drive is not far behind. The Canvio measures only 4.3 x 3.1 x 0.8 inches and weighs just 0.5 pounds. Sizes range from 500 GB to 3 TB (just in case you need as much storage space as possible), and it works with both Mac and Windows hardware. What makes him the leader in our list of “Best External Hard Drives 2017”.

Setting up the drive is simple: there is only one USB port for connecting to a computer and for turning on the power. The 5400 rpm disk read speed is 98 MB / s for small files and 103 MB / s for medium-sized files, and the write speed is 112 MB / s for small and medium-sized files. Large files   read at a speed of 109 MB / s and write at a speed of 112.4 MB / s.

Password protection is provided by password protection. And access to your data on the go is offered through the cloud. backup   with a bonus of 10 gigabytes of online storage. The portable hard drive also comes with a two year warranty.

The USB 3.0 interface is becoming more relevant day by day. Help him in this multimedia files, the size of which is constantly increasing. New camera or smartphone? Pictures, as a rule, take up even more space, not to mention the increasing spread of the RAW format. Video content is not far behind: for example, in early April, the first Quad-HD Ultra High Definition TV with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels appeared on the Russian market. Modern portable hard drives are designed to help the user save, and most importantly, easily transfer large volumes of multimedia content.

The fact that the USB 2.0 interface is already two feet in the technological grave is not in doubt. There are more and more devices with USB 3.0, and ports that support this version of the interface appear even on inexpensive laptops and motherboard. And from a technical point of view, this is fully justified. As our testing showed, USB 2.0 has long limited the data transfer speed of portable HDDs. Often drives worked 3-4 times slower than they could. The story with USB flash drives is a bit different, because there the write or read speed very rarely reaches a threshold of 20 MB / s, so flash drives are in no hurry to translate into new version   USB And finally, USB 3.0 solved one of the long-standing problems of external drives, which often leveled the convenience of using them - now no external power is required, because the maximum current that a single USB 3.0 connector can provide is 900 mA, which works drive mechanics are enough with a margin. However, for the purity of the experiment, we still checked each drive in USB 2.0 mode, because no one wants to be in a situation where the laptop has no USB 3.0 port two years ago, and the external drive with a new port cannot spin up or is not detected at all.

We compared the drives in three ways.:

· Performance;

· Convenience and functionality;

· Reasonable price.

Performance

The performance of an external drive, in contrast to a flash drive, greatly depends on which area of \u200b\u200bthe plate read / write occurs. One of the most significant parameters here is random reading and random writing. By and large, this is an average indicator of the speed that the disk will show in real life. As we have repeatedly written, the speed of the USB 2.0 interface has long been a limiting factor for drives on hard drives, and USB 3.0 is a real way if you do not use your own hard drive performance at 100%, then at least get closer to this. In addition to the write and read speeds, we also measured the average access time in these modes: the less the last indicator of the “drive” was, the higher the score it received. As a test utility, we used the popular program AIDA64 Extreme Edition version 2.30.1900. All disks were tested by the built-in utility, the size of the test block was 32 KB.

Convenience and Functionality

This feature is relevant for external drives, since the relatively large dimensions of these devices make it possible to integrate more different functions. The most useful features we considered an shockproof case, a complete case and the possibility of additional power. Now let’s explain in order. Shockproof housing is not even an optional feature. Indeed, if you are actively moving around and taking such a drive with you, then protection against falls is an almost mandatory attribute. Disk mechanics still require very careful handling, especially considering that some models have drives with a rotation speed of 7200 rpm. This greatly increases the risk of damage when the device is in a fall condition. Finally, additional power will not be superfluous, as it helps to avoid a situation when you are far from your computer, and an affordable laptop / netbook cannot spin up a drive. The cover is useful to maintain a decent appearance of the case: a battered drive looks untidy. In addition, the cover is able to absorb part of the impact energy in a fall. Other features, such as encryption, were not forgotten. However, with regard to external drives, this is often an additional rather than a necessary function, because such drives are usually used to store photos and multimedia files that are of value only to the owner of the drive.

Justification for pricing and evaluation of Hard "n" Soft

The justification for the price was calculated taking into account the ratings of “Performance” (weight ratio 50%), “Convenience and functionality” (20%), and “Cost of 1 GB of space” (30%). The latter was included in the calculations in order to highlight those disks that do not have excessive functionality, but nevertheless offer a large amount at a low cost. Also, this feature helps to see the most expensive drives per 1 GB and before buying to think about whether you need such a drive and what you really pay for.

Overall rating of Hard "n" Soft   traditionally calculated as the arithmetic average of ratings for performance, convenience and functionality, reasonable price. The device with the highest total score received the Editors' Choice Award.

Warning. Focusing on our estimates, we must remember that they are relative. A low rating does not indicate the unsatisfactory quality of the device, but only shows its place relative to other testing models. Since our final scales are not tied to absolute indicators, they cannot serve to evaluate models that are not included in testing. The prices quoted by us were relevant at the time of testing and are given mainly for comparison.

Today there are few as well-deserved old-timers in the hard drive market as Western digital. The Odnoklassniki of this company have either either rested in a Bose (like, for example, Quantum and Maxtor, which were dissolved in the bowels of Seagate, or Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, which has just merged with WD), or have gone into a completely different business, like IBM. It should be noted that personal experience   The author of the article on working on a PC started with the configuration, which included a Western Digital drive with a crazy (then) 850 MB volume. This HDD served for six years without the slightest failure, after which it was sent to retirement.

When testing the WD drive, I did not want to be disappointed, especially since, at first glance, WD My Passport Essential did not stand out from the other participants. He did not stand out at the second glance. As it turned out, we have before us a completely typical, solid drive without any special functions or accessories. Glossy plastic case with smooth contours (available in five colors), a modest LED on the side, which, incidentally, is not very visible, but at first it is completely invisible. Complete with a disk are instructions and a cable for connecting to a computer - nothing more.

So far, the WD disk description is similar to the description of the most modest participant in the test, and so it would be, if not for one part - this is the most affordable test drive. When calculating the unit cost of volume, it turned out that WD My Passport Essential is an absolute record holder. 1 GB of space will cost you only 5.4 rubles. Yes, the speed and functionality of WD My Passport Essential leaves much to be desired, but in any case, the speed of data exchange WD My Passport Essential is up to date (38.7 MB / s on average when reading and 27.9 MB / s on writing ) Therefore, its leisurelyness will be noticeable only when compared with more expensive and faster competitors. Summing up, we can say that WD My Passport Essential is just a high-quality external drive, in the case of which you pay mainly for the drive itself and a little more for backup software and an interface cable.

Products Buffalo   We got to our market for a long time. In fact, they started selling in Russia only in mid-2011. At first glance, it might seem that another supplier of storage devices and wireless equipment will only complicate the selection process. But Buffalo devices have a number of advantages over other market participants, and we will consider them in more detail.

The first of them relates more to the image of the company and does not directly affect the characteristics of the equipment: most of Buffalo devices are manufactured in Japan. This means that they are not just developed and then sent for assembly to China, but go through the entire production cycle in Japan, which, of course, has a positive effect on the overall quality of the product. The company has factories in other countries, in particular in Eastern Europe, however, all premium models are assembled in Japan.

The second advantage of Buffalo is its well thought out design and high functionality. The latter is manifested both in the functions of the devices themselves and in the quality of the software. Buffalo is the market leader in Japan and the USA, and in these countries consumers are very demanding.

Finally, the third advantage is accessibility: basically, Buffalo devices are in the same price category as their competitors, which means that the choice for the buyer is obvious. But from general words we will pass to our sample.

Buffalo MiniStation Extreme can be classified as a drive class for those who travel a lot and mostly not in limousines and without personal porters. The drive is packed in a shockproof case, which will protect against damage to the insides when falling from a height of 2 m (of course, we are talking about an idle drive). The drive design only emphasizes this feature: the edges of the Buffalo MiniStation Extreme are finished with durable matte plastic, which does not scratch, the front of the case also gives the impression of quality factor.

The second feature of this drive (at first glance, not so important) is a flexible interface cable that retracts into the case so that it does not interfere with carrying. Those who actively use external drives will understand our delight: a common problem with such drives is that the cables do not have space in their cases, if any (in fact, the main problem with external drives is that they often fight, but with this, Buffalo MiniStation Extreme is OK). They have to be stored in pockets and pockets, and God forbid that you do not forget this cable before the trip (for USB 3.0 it is not in every store).

And finally, Buffalo MiniStation Extreme is equipped with a good and clear backup software, is compatible with Apple Time Machine proprietary technology and has hardware encryption with a 256-bit key length according to AES standard. The performance of this disk turned out to be at a very good level, in the rating the drive took the third place, after Freecom and Transcend (average read speed - 44.5 MB / s, average write speed - 37.9 MB / s). Given the above, the Buffalo MiniStation Extreme - a good choice   for those who do not pursue a small thickness of the case or a strict business design.

Another new player in our market is the company Freecom. This time, the participant claims on the site of German origin, although technically the brand belongs to the Japanese giant Mitsubishi. To be precise, according to official information, the design and development of the disc took place in Germany, but the assembly fell on the shoulders of a factory located in China.

A key feature of this drive in a non-removable cover, which is made of thick specially treated leather. The solution is rare for an external drive, but this makes it even more interesting. We did not test the wear of the case: it is obvious that if you transfer such a disk along with keys or plastic objects with sharp corners, then the outer gloss will disappear very quickly. But it is unlikely that the manufacturer has prepared such a fate for his brainchild. Freecom XXS Leather can be called an ideal candidate for the role of an external drive for a quiet business personwho likes to keep the style down to the smallest detail.

Like other participants, Freecom XXS Leather has only one connector - USB 3.0 itself, and just like most other participants, the interface cable does not go away, you have to carry it separately, which is always fraught with loss. Among other features, it can be noted that the kit comes very useful program   Nero BackItUp and Burn.

To our surprise, the Freecom XXS Leather external drive was not only the most original in appearance, but also the fastest, because often the manufacturer focuses either on the design or on the characteristics. The average disk read speed was 46.6 MB / s, and the maximum - 110.7 MB / s (linear reading, the beginning of the disk). An important parameter is random reading, here the disk showed the result of 94.5 MB / s. In terms of data writing speed, he took third place with a slight lag behind Kingmax and Buffalo, showing a result of 37.2 MB / s (random recording).

Summarizing, we can say that Freecom XXS Leather will not disappoint. This is the case when in life the device looks at least no worse than in press release photographs.

Company Kingmax   known to most Russian consumers for flash drives with good performance   and low price (as well as cards and memory modules). The range of external hard drives of this company is small and, apparently, is designed to cover the needs of those consumers who need a large capacity, albeit at the expense of compactness.

By and large, Kingmax KE-71 in addition to the design is not much different from other typical drives. It does not have any special functions or accessories in the kit, except that the cover is made of faux leather of medium quality. But in appearance you can notice the originality. The glossy black case has an unusual shape: a polished metal circle is mounted in the center of the front face, resembling a large button. However, this function bears no function other than a decorative one.

The interface cable is also supplied with the disk, which, by the way, compares favorably with all the others presented in the test. At the end, designed to connect to a computer, two connectors are mounted. One - with a characteristic blue color, is responsible for the transmission of information and the main power, the second - only for additional power. And although such a cable looks less aesthetically pleasing than, say, in Buffalo, such accumulation can play a very good service if your netbook suddenly refuses to supply enough power to the main connector. And the last feature that can hardly be called essential is a rather large LED located on the front side of the drive. Its color indicates the mode in which the disk works. A blue glow indicates the full speed of the USB 3.0 interface, red indicates USB 2.0.

Finally, let's talk about two more features of the disk, positive and negative. Positive - it has one of the lowest costs of 1 GB of space (only Verbatim and WD drives bypass this parameter). Simply put, given disk   500 GB in volume will cost you about 2.9 thousand rubles. Negative - unimpressive performance in the test. But here, as they say, the buyer will have to decide: "checkers" or go. "

About the new drive series Seagate GoFlex we already wrote. Their distinctive feature is that, in fact, such disks allow you to replace the interface connector yourself without any difficulties. This is implemented like the Lego constructor. The part of the case where the connector is detachable. Accordingly, having bought a similar interface module, but with a FireWire or eSATA connector, you can upgrade your Seagate GoFlex in seconds. Of course, on paper this looks attractive, but during testing we encountered several problems that cast doubt on the high demand for this approach. Firstly, due to the fact that the module with the interface is detachable and does not attach in any special way, a backlash can form over time. This is confirmed by commonplace mechanics: the transverse size of the module is quite large, while the mounting area is small, and the resulting lever will obviously not play in favor of the reliability of the entire structure.

The second drawback of the drive follows from the first, or rather, from the complexity of the design. Obviously, the decision with removable modules did not affect the price of devices in the best way, as a result, we have the highest cost in terms of 1 GB of space. For comparison: most of the other participants have about 6 rubles. for 1 GB, while Seagate GoFlex Slim - about 10 rubles. Yes, the manufacturer on the website claims that the drive used a disk with a rotation speed of 7200 rpm, but, again, it did not give a competitive advantage in the performance test: the score scored is second from the bottom.

And finally, we have doubts about the great demand for detachable modules. Buying an external drive, hardly anyone thinks about whether it will be possible to upgrade it. And it is unlikely that many will bother with finding the right module, even if the need for it appears. Most likely, they will simply buy a new drive - it is no secret that with the constantly decreasing cost of disks in terms of 1 GB, this type of storage medium has now almost moved to the rank of consumables. And yet, despite the above and not the highest ratings, we liked the Seagate GoFlex Slim. This is without reservation an image thing. Its design is strict and concise, and thanks to the metal case it’s nice to even just hold it in your hands. For some, the ultra-small drive thickness of 9 mm will be a noticeable plus (thinning is no longer possible due to the dimensions of the HDD itself).

Seagate GoFlex Slim can be a great gift for a tech savvy person. The logo of the largest disk manufacturer guarantees quality and reliability, and the original function of changing modules will interest anyone who is still looking at the designers.

Transcend   - one of the brands that some users mainly associate with products based on flash memory. However, this manufacturer has been producing (for more than 9 years) external drives   with HDD. The design of the device is absolutely typical: the plastic case consists of a lower matte and upper glossy parts in black, no frills or special external signs. The view of the device revives only a dual-mode LED. When connected to the bus of the third version, it lights up in blue, and red color indicates work with uSB port 2.0.

The case is quite easily soiled, prints on the glossy cover remain immediately. Its main difference from most other participants is a special design that protects the disk from damage. But we’ll make a reservation that relying entirely on this kind of protection is still not worth it and it’s better not to drop the disc. Another feature of the Transcend StoreJet 25D3 is that in the test it is the only external drive with a dedicated slot for additional power. It's no secret that USB 2.0 is far from always able to provide the amount of current needed to spin the drive, especially if the plates rotate at a speed of 7200 rpm.

Most often, such problems arose with netbooks and inexpensive laptops of previous generations. The reason is that even if the device had several USB ports, the supplied power turned out to be sufficient for only one device; if several were connected, the current was divided between them. But during our test, all the disks connected to the USB 2.0 port did not receive additional power, and such a problem never occurred. Nevertheless, the ability to additionally power the drive does not hurt. By the way, the drive kit contains the necessary cable, just for connecting to the second USB connector.

In conclusion about performance. By speed this drive   took second place in the test. The average disk read speed was 38.7 MB / s (in USB 3.0 mode), the random write speed was 31.5 MB / s with an access time of only 8 ms. This drive turned out to be the best in terms of convenience and functionality, and all thanks to the possibility of additional power supply, a shockproof case and a case in the kit. By the total points scored Transcend StoreJet 25D3 received the award " Editor's Choice».

In our country, the company Verbatim very well known as a manufacturer of all kinds of storage media. It earned popularity a decade and a half ago, releasing the highest quality available recordable CDs in a characteristic gold color. They were in stable demand both among “pirates” and ordinary users, happy owners of rare recording drives then. But it was not so easy to find external hard drives under this brand, although with this type of product the company entered the domestic market not yesterday.

With the exception of this point, there is nothing more to complain about; in our test, the Verbatim Store "n" Go Executive HDD proved to be the best. Although this is not the most common “drive”, it is quite affordable. We have no doubts about the quality of its manufacture. In addition, this model has several advantages, which we will discuss in more detail.

Of course, the “touch panel”, which is announced both on the website and on the product packaging, immediately attracts attention. It is made in the form of a large round button, slightly recessed into the upper panel of the drive.

The bottom line is that when you touch it, a predefined action is activated, and the following options are offered for selection:

· Perform 256-bit AES encryption;

· Start automatic backup;

· Start synchronization;

· Open your favorite website.

Any of the listed functions may turn out to be in demand, therefore the touch panel is a rather useful innovation.

The Verbatim drive is average in terms of speed: the average read speed is 43.9 MB / s, random reads at 84.6 MB / s, and write - 29 MB / s. In a word, this disc will not disappoint with quality, and there will be enough speed for everyday purposes.

Based on the test results and the calculation of the ratings, we identified three devices worthy of receiving awards. The highest performance among portable disks was shown by a participant from hitherto little-known company Freecom. No exaggeration chic appearance   Freecom XXS Leather, which was achieved through a high-quality leather case, did not stop the drive from showing the highest speed result and receiving the "Best Performance" award.

The "Price Justification" award went to the Buffalo MiniStation Extreme drive, which was fast enough, well equipped with functionality and affordable at a price comparable to other participants.

Finally, in terms of the total points, the “Editors' Choice” award received an inconspicuous, at first glance, Transcend Technology disc, which turned out to be the most balanced in all respects.

In conclusion, let us reiterate the idea that any of the participants in this test, due to the equipment with a fast USB 3.0 interface, can provide the owner with a tangible increase in the speed of exchanging frequently transferred data. True, the computers used must be appropriate - they must also have a third-party USB interface.
