The appearance of the smartphone is not unique: it will not be lost on the shelf among the black tubes of other manufacturers due to the unusual drawing - texture, but in the user's hand, for example, in public transport does not look like an individuality. In addition, the forms are typical of the current vendor line, a back-panel bathtub that goes into a plastic edged metal with rounded corners and completes the picture - a glossy, even protection of the display and front panel (the language will not turn to write “glass”). The plastic is not bad, but not perfect - the device slaps fast, although we had a dark version (maybe a light one would have supported the premium a little longer appearance) The assembly looks high-quality: there are no backlashes and gaps, when squeezing the case does not crack, which is already good, although the sample is clearly a test one. The dimensions are not mini and comparable with the iPhone 5: 124.6? 61.3? 8.94 mm, 107 g. Rather, the flagship is maxi, don't you think? In the hand, due to the shape, the device lies not bad, but in a wet palm it can slide.
There are not many structural elements, but their quantity cannot be called small. To begin with, above the display we see a metal bar of a spoken speaker with perforation, proximity and light sensors, as well as a front camera of 1.9 megapixels. Under the screen are the traditional mechanical “home” key and the touch brothers “menu” and “return” in the surroundings.
The screen itself is a 4.3 ”Super AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 960? 540 pixels. The picture quality is not bad, but not perfect, the grain at the current resolution can be fixed with the naked eye. At the same time, the screen does not cause negative, it is pleasing to the eye, the colors are juicy, the viewing angles are close to maximum, and the brightness with a small margin. The matrix itself is capacitive, it works out well up to 5 simultaneous touches, but when it comes into direct sunlight, it significantly fades.
The right side was occupied by the power key (a small longitudinal element with an average stroke), and on the left side there was a volume rocker similar in thickness. The manufacturer gave the bottom panel under the micro-USB connector and the microphone hole, and on the top there was a 3.5mm audio jack, an infrared port and a second noise canceling microphone.
The back panel of the device is notable for two parallel slots of the call dynamics - from below and the camera lens protruding slightly from the surface with a flash - from above. The panel image, as you recall, is unusual and somewhat resembles snake skin.
To remove the panel, you need to pry it by the ledge on the left, and then pull it up by snapping off the mounting tabs. Inside the smartphone, we are waiting for a battery (Li-ion, 1900mAh) in the corresponding recess, which in turn blocks access to the SIM and microSD compartments: similar recesses with pads and transverse metal brackets above them.

Inside the smartphone, we are waiting for Android 4.2.2, Jelly Bean and the proprietary interface Touch Wiz which managed to evolve into a convenient shell.
To begin with, we are greeted by a widely customizable lock screen, on which you can take out the weather, clock or set security parameters.
Desktops can be created up to 7, and unwanted ones are deleted in 2 accounts if desired. You can make one of the available ones the main one in preview mode, while circular scrolling is available. The filling is standard: shortcuts, widgets, folders - everything you like, and even added graphic effects. The customizable “dock” of frequently used functions includes a telephone, contacts, messages and an Internet browser, not counting the transition to the main menu (you can even add folders if you wish).
Traditionally, for the manufacturer, you can choose the design font: pampering, but it will amuse someone, and desktop wallpapers can be either static or animated. A variety of activation shortcuts have been placed in the notification area: here you can enable a lot, why they did not fit on one screen and use horizontal scrolling, or a single matrix. In addition, we see here access to settings and a display backlight slider.
The main menu of the page view and contains tabs: menus and widgets. Tinctures are represented by familiar tabs and a vertical list in each with noticeable runners in some places, as well as type separators.

Battery life directly depends on the usage scenario, but the standard "user" load, including half an hour of calls, ten to twenty messages, checking mail and social networks, as well as shooting with a camera and listening to the radio for half an hour, will drain the smartphone’s battery in about a day. A typical indicator for the platform, to be honest.
The network reception quality was not satisfactory - there was no signal loss, with the exception of natural obstacles. As in the case of the “eldest” one, the scratch-resistant plastic, in other words, polycarbonate, is used in the case of the mini-version of the flagship. The front panel is covered with a third-generation Gorilla glass. Lateral faces, which at first glance seem metallic, are also essentially plastic. But it is worthwhile to pay tribute - the make-up for metal was especially successful for the manufacturer.
Of course, the small dimensions (124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm) of the case were made possible due to one simple factor - a smaller display diagonal - 4.3 versus the 5-inch panel in the original version of the smartphone. Yes, the “mini-flagship” is slightly thicker than the “eldest” one - 8.9 mm versus 7.9 mm, but I would not say that this factor is already very critical.
Regarding the adjustment of the housing elements to each other, there are no complaints here - the seams and gaps are within acceptable limits. But the plastic itself creaks a little. But in fairness, I note - we had a rather early engineering version of the device in our hands, for which a similar state of affairs is quite acceptable.
The procedure for attaching the battery cover to the panel will take you no more than a second or two. The fixation is reliable - it does not slip arbitrarily. Removing it is also easy. By the way, keep in mind - the lid is thin and easy to bend. However, it is not worth worrying - inadvertently breaking it does not work out.
Design
Appearance with S4 Mini is not the same as that of other Samsung smartphones. Yes, on the one hand the handset has some hereditary features of representatives of the Galaxy line. But, on the other hand, one cannot ignore the performance in the style of a strict rectangle with elegantly rounded edges, a more “adult” edging (exactly the same as in S4) and other little things. In a word, recognizable features and style are preserved, but at the same time quite good cosmetics are carried out on the exterior of the device.
Ergonomics of functional elements
The front panel is occupied by a 4.3-inch display, two touch buttons and one hardware, as well as a peek-eye 1.9 MP front camera plus light and proximity sensors.

The thickness of the smartphone is 8.9 mm, and its weight is only 108 g.
The front panel is covered with a protective glass. Below it is a display, above which is the speaker grille, light and proximity sensors, as well as the front camera eye.
Under the screen there is a proprietary hardware button Home and two touch-sensitive Menu and Back keys, equipped with a backlight.

The main 8 megapixel camera is equipped with autofocus and LED flash. The maximum resolution of photographs is 3264 x 2448 pixels, and video - 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD).
The camera application interface is as simple and straightforward as possible.

The first thing to consider is the appearance of a device called the Galaxy S4 Mini. As we have already mentioned, it is practically no different from its larger version. In its production, the same materials were used, the design contains lines characteristic of the Galaxy line. Unless the display has decreased to 4.3 inches, the weight has become 107 grams, and the overall dimensions are as follows: 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm. Due to this, it is much more convenient to hold it in your hand than the Galaxy S4, and users who prefer small smartphones to huge phones that sometimes do not even fit in your pocket more like it.
The Galaxy S4 Mini is made entirely of plastic, at the bottom of the device there is still a physical “Home” button and touch buttons “Back” and “Menu”. Both the front panel and the rear are painted black, plus rhombuses are applied to the metal, which slightly dilute the boring design.

It would seem why this battery has such a small volume, because it reduces the battery life of the device. In fact, it turned out that 1900 mAh provides sufficient battery life without additional recharging.

The mini-phone received 1.5 GB of RAM from Samsung. In principle, for a not-so-powerful device this is quite enough - it will not slow down, and all programs and applications suitable for it can work perfectly. 900 MB of RAM remains for the operation of applications, programs and games, the rest is spent on the processor and operating system.
The internal memory in the phone is 8GB, but only 4GB is allocated for storing applications and similar data. If desired, the user can expand the flash memory using removable media, namely, a microSD memory card up to 64GB.
If I were told a couple of years ago that a smartphone with a screen diagonal of 4.3 inches would be called “mini,” I would have laughed and not taken this news seriously. But mobile devices over the past few years have changed so much that smartphones with a screen diagonal of 5-6 inches have become the norm, and this is far from the limit. There is a general trend, as all manufacturers began to produce smaller copies of their flagship devices and give them the corresponding name with the Mini prefix. A large screen diagonal is a definite plus, however, in modern smartphones it is so large that it creates discomfort for the user. With a screen diagonal of more than 4 inches, it is practically impossible to control the device with one hand, it does not fit in any pocket, and the battery runs out much faster due to the "gluttonous" display. Smartphone manufacturers also understand this problem by launching lightweight smaller copies of flagship devices on the market. This time came the turn of the Samsung Galaxy S4, which received a younger brother Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.

This is not very convenient for quick card changes, but the use of large memory cards up to 64 GB brightens up this drawback. I want to note that although the internal memory in the Galaxy S4 Mini is as much as 8 GB, you can’t count on its use as a storage for personal videos and photo files, since operating system Android of them is allocated about 5 GB.
In terms of photo quality, Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini nothing to brag about. The camera shoots quite solidly, but remains the same as in. Unfortunately, the Galaxy S4 Mini did not inherit the camera from the older version of 13MP, but got its own 8MP.
On the front of the device is also located a second 1.9 megapixel camera, designed for video calls. Near it are proximity sensors and lighting. There is one significant minus here - the lack of an LED notification indicator and a battery charge indication, which is somewhat frustrating. Already for such a price (let's talk about this below), Samsung developers could go broke on a tiny LED.
And if we already talked about the minuses of the device, then we’ll immediately mention one more feature of the phone - the lack of vibration feedback on pressing soft buttons on the screen.
