Since the beginning of 2000, there has been an active increase in the economic well-being of Ukrainians. The Orange Revolution of 2004 and the struggle between the political parties of V. Yanukovych, V. Yushchenko and Y. Timoshenko had a great influence on the country's economy. Today, Ukraine is a member of the WTO, UN, Council of Europe, CIS and other international organizations.

In April 1986, Ukraine experienced one of the world's largest man-made disasters - the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Historical reference

In 862, the state of Kievan Rus was formed with its capital in Kiev. For this reason, Kiev is often called the "mother of Russian cities." After the invasion of Khan Batu in the XIII century, the territory of Kievan Rus fell into desolation. From the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries, power over the territory belonged to Lithuania, Poland, Moldova, and Austria-Hungary. In the XVIII century, the territory of modern Ukraine was divided between Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire.

After the fall of the monarchy in Russia, the territory of Ukraine became the scene of a civil war. In 1922, the Ukrainian SSR was formed, which in 1939 became part of the USSR. Only in 1991 Ukraine gained independence from the USSR after the August coup.

Must Visit
