In 2010, quite distant by the standards of the current mobile industry, Samsung launched a line of 7-inch tablets. We even published a review of this device, coming to an ambiguous conclusion. Then Samsung got one of the best Android tablets at that time, but compared to the iPad, it was inferior in almost all parameters, including cost.

Over time, the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and the flagship Galaxy Tab 7.7 were brought to the market. The end of May was marked by the appearance in the CIS of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 model, which can be considered an intermediate link between budget tablets and flagship offers.

If the first Tab with a 3G module cost sky-high about 27-28 thousand, then the current model with a 3G module will cost no more than 13 thousand. Samsung explains such a radical decrease in cost by the fact that in 2010 it was just starting to roll out the production of tablets. And as a result, it was forced to bear high production costs. However, this comment is not particularly valuable in light of the fact that the quoted price is normal (i.e. competitive) for a 7-inch tablet PC with Tab 2 specifications.

Design

Tab 2 cannot boast of a memorable appearance. In our opinion, the exterior of the tablet turned out to be too impersonal - there is nothing to catch the eye. However, there is nothing to complain about on the other hand, we are dealing with a thin profile and small stylish buttons.

A small speaker grill is located in the center just above the screen. It is also found in the previous models of the line. This solution does not look very good, as it a priori evokes an association with a large phone. Apparently Samsung implies using a tablet as a complete replacement for a smartphone or a regular phone, but does not quite understand the relevance of finding a 7-inch device at the ear. For the sake of fairness, we note that the device also has “usual” loudspeakers.

However, let's not quibble and take the tablet in hand. In the palms, the impression of the model is dramatically improved, which is facilitated by the more than acceptable weight of 345 grams. In any case, even girls should have no problem holding the Tab 2 7.0 with one hand. The thinness of the case is accompanied by the absence of clear right angles on the sides. Therefore, the discomfort from the parts of the case resting against the palm is not felt, giving way to ergonomic design.

Considering the quality of workmanship, it should be noted that we have a pre-sale sample of the tablet. Apparently, therefore, in the lower part, in the corners between the body and the lid, the cracks were clearly visible. In commercial versions of Tab 2, they are removed. However, we cannot say with the same certainty that Samsung has also eliminated a slight, but quite noticeable bend in the back cover. After the tested one, which had the same problem a little more pronounced, Samsung wanted a better answer.

Performance materials are another controversial point. If the glass of the front panel raises no objections, the plastic of the lid looks and feels not too presentable.

The tablet was provided to us along with a soft dermantin case. Whether it is possible to find one on sale, we do not know, since the tablet is still very new. But, we believe, this will cost within a thousand rubles.

Connectors and controls

After Google released Android 3.x, it was almost unmistakable to determine which version of the system was installed on the tablet. Budget fans of Android 2.2 / 2.3 continued to showcase a row of touch buttons below the screen, while Android 3.x owners were deprived of them. Android 4.0 retains the approach of having all the extra buttons on the system bar, so there are no buttons on the front of the Tab 2.

Instead, in the upper part in the center is the already mentioned speaker, covered with a fine mesh, as well as light and distance sensors. Below is only the name of the manufacturer.

On the left side there are card slots microSD memory and SIM cards. Our attempt to install a SIM card was defeated - it successfully failed inside and strongly recommended contacting a service center. By the way, all connectors contain plugs, which is a very useful moment - wherever the tablet is stored, dust and dirt will not clog into the connectors.

On the right side there is a place for dual volume control keys and an on / off button. They are raised above the body, fit comfortably under the index finger and can be pressed easily.

At the top there is only a 3.5 mm jack for a headset or headphones.

The lower part of the tablet is interesting by the presence of speaker slots on both sides. Note that they produce quite good volume and sound quality, as much as possible for a tablet form factor. In the center there is a 30-pin connector for connecting to a computer or communicating with a charger.

On the back cover we see only the Samsung inscription and the camera peephole in the upper left corner. On the way, we note that the Tab 2 does not have a flash.

In our case, the tablet was submitted for testing "as is", so we did not get to see its complete package live.

Screen

The 7-inch display offers a resolution of 1024x600 pixels, which is now becoming more or less a standard for such a diagonal instead of the obsolete 800x480 pixels. The pixel density is 169 dpi. Of course, the display is capacitive, with multitouch support and up to 10 simultaneous touches inclusive. Samsung's arsenal of screens allows the company to "maneuver" depending on the price of the tablet. Tab 2 received a PLS matrix of its own production.

In terms of its properties, it seemed to us practically indistinguishable from IPS variations. However, it was not without both positive and negative features. An unpleasant surprise was the lack of a sufficiently deep black color, which is especially noticeable in films with dark scenes. However, the measured contrast ratio was 947: 1, which is not too bad. And the black level at 100% brightness was only 0.41 cd / m2. Here, apparently, the drawback of PLS played, which manifests itself in a purple shade of black, if you look at the screen from an angle.

But the overall excellent brightness of the display acts as a compensation. At first, it even seemed to us that the value was set to the maximum, but no - the slider was only half of the ruler. Accordingly, the color image is well distinguishable in the sun. The brightness of the white point of the screen is 388 cd / m2, which is above average.

At the same time, it is worth stocking up on a cloth in advance to wipe down the glass cover, which quickly collects fingerprints. The viewing angles of the Tab 2 are another specific highlight of the tablet. They are quite large, but even with a small deviation vertically, a barely noticeable gray "film" begins to appear horizontally.

As for the color temperature, Tab 2 showed an even graph without "blockages", almost along the entire length it goes close to the reference value. For comparison, you can check ours to see the difference between quality PLS and budget TFT.

With gamma curves it is still better, the line almost does not deviate from the reference. Only in the upper part is some imbalance visible, indicating a slight overexposure of the picture.

Camera

The tablet has two cameras, which allows us to receive more or less high-quality images and to carry out video communication over the Internet. The rear camera has three megapixels, the maximum shooting resolution is 2048x1536 pixels. The front camera is perceived purely with the "web" prefix due to the presence of only 0.3 megapixels.

Despite the fact that we are dealing with Android 4.0, with all the desire, some innovations are invisible, which is certainly more the fault of the limited capabilities of the front camera.

It doesn't even have autofocus, let alone an LED flash. It doesn't make much sense to talk about the shooting settings, since they basically duplicate what could be seen at least in. Only for Tab 2, the number of options has been cut by almost half.

After a depressing set of settings, the quality of the resulting images turned out to be surprisingly acceptable. Before we got acquainted with the characteristics of the tablet, it seemed that the model has a 5 megapixel camera. In any case, in the absence of "soap" at hand Tab 2 will not be a bad substitute for shooting.

The rear camera did not have any surprises, it was especially sensitive to poor lighting.

Specifications

The new Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 will have to compete with relatively inexpensive Chinese solutions like Huawei MediaPad.

The hardware looks powerful enough. A dual-core processor has become almost a standard feature of mid-range tablets. The number of processor cores has never been a measure of performance on Android since Tegra 2 appeared due to poor software and hardware optimization. With the advent of Tegra 3, the situation has changed little.

RAM is present in the proper amount - 1 GB. 16GB of storage space is enough for a small multimedia collection of a couple of HD movies. In addition, you can install a memory card up to 32 GB, forming 48 GB of storage.

Partly wireless networks Tab 2 has complete order - it supports both the ability to talk in cellular networks, and 3G, and a full arsenal of 802.11b / g / n. I was also pleased with Bluetooth in version 3.0. The lack of NFC is not particularly upsetting, since the technology is not yet widespread in the CIS.

In terms of battery capacity, the claimed 4000 mAh seems to be the optimal choice for a 7-inch high-resolution tablet. The Tab 2 does not show miracles of battery life, charging, depending on the tasks being performed, does not show miracles of battery life and allows the tablet to function for 5-8 hours.

If we compare it with Huawei MediaPad, which seems to be the closest competitor, then the choice is far from the most obvious. Most of the characteristics are the same, the advantage of the Huawei model is expressed in a slightly more powerful processor and "honest" IPS. But it has outdated Bluetooth 2.1 and weighs 41 grams more. Finally, Huawei is not yet famous for its software add-ons.

Performance testing

We decided to check the actual performance in comparison with the already familiar PocketBook A7 ", which has a 1 GHz single-core processor, 512 MB of RAM and a weaker graphics processor. Let's see how Tab 2 justifies the superiority of its characteristics.

SmartBench 2011 kicked off with an almost devastating difference. Apparently, the test managed to make the most of the multi-core processor of the Samsung tablet, as well as its RAM. Accordingly, the superiority is 4 times obvious. The 2012 edition was not so categorical. In overall performance, the 4x advantage remains, but gaming capabilities are no longer lagging behind. Maybe the "graphics" of the A7 "are not so weak?

AnTutu puts everything in its place again, the difference in results turns out to be 2-4 times on all fronts. The only "anomalous" exception was 2D graphics. Apparently the PowerVR SGX 530 chip has far from obvious capabilities.

The Linpack benchmark is based on the processing power of the processor, so expecting a more or less decent result from the A7 "would be silly to say the least.

A series of graphical tests dispelled the doubts left after Smartbench 2012. The gap in all benchmarks was at least twofold, so the owners of A7 "should not build illusions about performance against the background of even such" average "tablets as Tab 2 by today's standards.

The multi-core system fully justified itself in JavaScript tests, the superiority of 4-5 times completely and with a decent margin justify the difference in characteristics between the tablets.

The gain of the PocketBook tablet by about 25% was revealed in the battery life test, which can be explained by the trite lower load of the system and programs on the battery. Still, the more limited the performance, the better the autonomous operation of the device becomes. How much this is a plus is a completely different story. AnTutu's autonomy test showed a slight difference, but we tend to trust our own practical measurement more.

In general, the superiority of the Tab 2 fully justifies its more powerful processor and a graphics chip - the overpayment for their capabilities is justified and indeed gives a multiple advantage over less productive platforms.

Software (Android 4)

It is easy to guess that the device has Android 4.0 installed with the TouchWiz add-on. We are in a hurry to immediately disappoint our readers a little - the dual-core processor, as always, did not become a guarantee of performance. This in no way means that the tablet "slows down". On the contrary, it works quite fast, but the ideal was not achieved yet again.

Let's just say - there is no global difference in comparison with single-core platforms. A prime example is the built-in image editing program, which clearly "lowers FPS" when working with effects. When several tasks are launched, and interactive wallpapers are installed in the background, 1 GB of memory and two 1 GHz cores remain only on paper in the graphs of tablet characteristics.

If you are also already familiar with one of the Samsung devices on Android base 3.x, Android ICS with TouchWiz performed by Tab 2 will not be a discovery for you. Quite the opposite - the changes are mostly cosmetic in nature, it feels like we are dealing with a slightly improved and optimized Android 3.x. This is also expressed in programs, indeed new developments can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Therefore, for a detailed tour of the pre-installed applications, we send you to the "Screenshots" section.

The start menu meets us with the absence of a lock screen. It was never found anywhere, including in the system settings. A feature of the industrial design? Perhaps. So, on the main screen we see a set of programs in two rows, in the upper part there is a quick call google search, display the number of desktops and go to the full list of programs. On the bottom panel on the left is a set of virtual keys, standard for Android ICS: return, go to the start menu, call up the list of running tasks and get a screenshot.

A few words about the last point. Unlike ASUS Prime, the screenshot lacks a prominent white button in place of the capture key in the resulting image. This plus Samsung "compensated" by the fact that after taking a picture, the system automatically opens it in the editor. It is very "convenient" when you need to get a series of 100-200 screenshots.

By holding down the home button, we get a general idea of all available desktops, with the ability to delete the current one and add new ones.

A pop-up panel with a list of programs for fast loading... It is not edited in any way.

Not without a tray, it as a whole does not differ much from what we have already seen in Android 3.x.

The logic for choosing widgets and wallpapers is lame on both legs. After holding the touch on any screen, we get the add menu, according to which it is difficult to say what we are generally offered to do. The sequence of constructing phrases is also upsetting, the construction of "Select wallpaper from Home screen" is difficult to understand. Interestingly, in the English version of the interface, the menu pleases no less.

There are surprisingly few available wallpapers, but the pictures are extremely attractive. Not without interactive wallpapers.

The selection of widgets is large enough, although he did not become a revelation - there are gadgets for all major programs.

The list of preinstalled programs is not that small, but it is too familiar to us from previous Samsung devices. On the other hand, this is more than a sufficient set for the average user.

The list of new or changed programs, as we have already said, is extremely modest. Nevertheless, let's go through them. The first in line is the most powerful office suite Polaris Office.

The tablet has a new version, which is radically different in interface from what we saw in the Galaxy S II. First, the menu has visually changed. It notifies us that the program has learned to support "cloud" services.

In our case, the synchronization with Google Drive passed without any problems.

The built-in file manager has undergone changes, it has become much more convenient and functional. On the top bar, you can instantly create a new file, add a new folder, change the ordering of files and search.

In the text document editor, the editing options panel is now located in the upper right corner. It is called after the selection of a piece of text. The visual presentation of the settings is beyond praise - they are bookmarked and intuitive.

The situation is similar for the table editor.

The creation of slides has also undergone changes in better side, the settings are arranged more clearly.

The Pulse program looks very curious. This is a creative look at organizing a kind of your own RSS feed, not just a dry text list, but a kind of mini-site. The point is to set news feeds of information sites in the line. That is, on the first line we read the Wall Steet Journal, on the second we look through the Popular Mechanics summary, etc.

Moreover, the sets of ribbons are presented in the form of "desktops". So on one we can store fashion ribbons, on the second - technology. All in all, real Web 2.0 at its best.

The calendar has been updated, although it is impossible to mark anything really remarkable. For every day, you can set up different tasks to perform, with the ability to sync between your devices.

Samsung Apps was visually "retouched". The organization of applications is better, but a dark background doesn't look the best choice for a service.

The system's alarm clock left a good impression, in large part due to the compact and efficient arrangement of the settings.

The Samsung video player has undergone minor functional improvements. A large list of options drops out by clicking on the button in the upper right corner, options are available such as selecting subtitles and setting the playback speed. However, the proportions of the panels called during viewing were chosen unsuccessfully - they take up half of the screen in total, although they are translucent.

Not without the task manager, which allows you to close a separate running application or clear the entire list of running programs at once. Sorting of processes by different parameters is possible.

The system browser is still good looking. In comparison with what he saw in, only his color palette has changed.

The music player, as befits a program in its category, has many options for filtering and organizing song lists. Equalizer and playback controls are available from the system tray.

It is difficult to come up with something really new with telephone functions, so we work with the familiar interface of dialing a number or messages, as well as a contact log.

To improve communication capabilities, the ChatON client is preinstalled. It is a complete chat solution for pair or group conversations and file sharing. In general, a typical IM client.

The Game Hub service has undergone a strange change. It used to provide access to many Gameloft games with download and free play during the demo period. Now some kind of indistinct application is left of it, which simply redirects us to Google Play.

The World Time program looks really original. It contains a three-dimensional globe, which shows different cities, by which you can find out about the time in different time zones.

In conclusion, we will repeat what was said above - there are no special innovations for those who are familiar with past Samsung products based on Android. At the same time, the company continued its policy of supplying its developments with the maximum number of necessary programs out of the box.

Output

Positioning Tab 2 looks like a completely successful attempt by Samsung to present a tablet capable of meeting all the most relevant requirements for this kind of device. In any case, the model has all the features that distinguish it from typical budget tablets.

The sun-resistant and high-quality PLS display is responsible for the picture quality, in fact, it does not at all seem like a compromise in comparison with IPS. The dual-core processor is more than enough for both basic and demanding tasks. In the end, manufacturers have not yet been able to convincingly prove the need for quad-core platforms. The 3G module is not an exclusive thing at all, but with it the user will not depend on the Wi-Fi connection.

The design of the tablet is devoid of some remarkable features, but due to the small thickness of the case it still looks attractive. The only thing that let us down was the assembly of the case and the unpresentable plastic of the back cover. I would also like to see Gorilla Glass on the Tab 2.

Price

The cost of a model with a 3G module is about 13 thousand. We learn a lot or a little in comparison with the offers of competitors. The main parameters of the search for rivals were the presence of a 3G module and a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels. This is Huawei MediaPad, Acer Iconia Tab A101 and Explay MID-725.

You can now buy Huawei MediaPad for 12,000 rubles. We made a more or less direct comparison with Tab 2 in the characteristics section. The difference in price fully covers the possible flaws of the tablet.

Acer Iconia Tab A101 will cost 12,500-13,000 rubles. It is based on NVIDIA Tegra 2, but unpleasantly surprises with the presence of a TN + Film matrix, which is unacceptable for such an expensive tablet.

Finally, the Explay MID-725 has only 4 GB of memory for data storage, but it also costs only 8000 rubles. True, the characteristics of the Tab 2 are sky-high - a 1.2 GHz single-core processor, Android 2.3, 512 MB of RAM and a TFT screen. A moment of humor, let's evaluate the flight of thought of one of the Russian online stores: “Explay MID-725 almost completely repeats the capabilities of the promoted on the market iPad tablet, while he has something to brag about in front of Apple products. "

In general, against the background of competitors Tab 2 does not look the best, but quite worthy of the buyer's choice of tablet.

Pros:

  • high-quality PLS-screen;
  • slim body;
  • light weight;
  • 3G support;
  • the ability to expand memory with microSD cards;
  • productive hardware platform;
  • Android 4 with TouchWiz shell;
  • high quality rear camera.

Minuses:

  • prints quickly accumulate on the screen;
  • back cover flexes;
  • the system is poorly optimized.

Tablet provided for testing by Samsung.

Safety Precautions 121 Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) Certification Information THIS DEVICE HAS BEEN MANUFACTURED IN CONNECTION WITH THE INTERNATIONAL RECOMMENDED RADIO EXPOSURES RECOMMENDED A mobile device is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is manufactured to comply with the exposure limits for radio waves (radio frequency electromagnetic fields) recommended by international regulations. The regulations are based on safety standards developed by the independent scientific organization ICNIRP. They limit the level of radiation by a significant margin, guaranteeing safety for all people, regardless of age and health status. Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is used to determine radiation levels. The stated SAR limit is 2.0 W / kg. Tests for SAR are conducted using standard operating positions with the device transmitting at its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. The ICNIRP SAR limit for this model device is: The highest SAR value for this model device and the conditions in which these values were recorded. SAR values for body-worn conditions 0.205 W / kg With normal use of the device, the SAR is much lower. This is because in order to improve system efficiency and reduce network interference, the operating power of the mobile device is automatically reduced when you are not on the phone. The lower the power output of a mobile device, the lower the SAR value. Safety Precautions 122 Body-worn SAR measurements were made using approved accessories or at a distance of 0.5 cm from your body. To maintain compliance with RF exposure guidelines, the device must be used with approved accessories or with a minimum separation distance of 0.5 cm from your body. If you use unapproved accessories, make sure they are free of metal and provide a minimum separation of 0.5 cm between your device and your body. According to the WHO and the US Food and Drug Administration, consumers can reduce their exposure to RF energy by using a headset to keep a wireless device away from their body during use, or by reducing the amount of time they use the device. For more information, go to www.samsung.com/sar and search for your product by model number.
