Appearance, arrangement of elements

The Samsung Galaxy Tab E has a pretty nice and stylish design. Unusually concave bevels on the sidewalls and textured design on the back provide good grip during operation and look very presentable.

The body of the novelty is made of high-quality matte plastic (there are options in white and brown), which is notable for good wear resistance. Due to the proportional dimensions (241.9 x 149.5 x 8.5 mm) and relatively low weight (490 g), it is quite comfortable to work with the device both horizontally and vertically (even holding it with one hand).

The front side of the Samsung Galaxy Tab E is completely covered with tempered glass. The bezels around the screen are standard sizes: 18mm at the top, 16mm at the bottom and 10mm at the sides.

Above the display of the tablet is the front camera lens, and below it there are three standard control buttons: mechanical "Home" and touch "Back" and "Menu".

On the upper edge of the device there is a 3.5 mm audio jack and a micro-USB port, and on the bottom there is a small microphone hole. The right side of the tablet contains a power button and a volume rocker, while the left is completely dedicated to the needs of the microSD slot.

The back of the Samsung Galaxy Tab E is occupied by the usual set of elements: the main camera lens and a multimedia speaker.

To increase comfort during operation and protect the tablet from possible damage, it is advisable to purchase a branded case cover for it. This accessory is made of plastic (base and mounts) and leatherette-like material with an interesting textured pattern on the outside and a soft surface on the inside.

It perfectly fixes the tablet in special grooves and provides trouble-free access to all functional elements (there are necessary cutouts).

The front of the cover is divided into three segments that can be folded into a triangle-shaped support. This allows you to position the tablet vertically, for example, for watching videos or working with photos. In addition, this position is fixed with a magnet, which helps to avoid accidental opening.

The build quality of the Samsung Galaxy Tab E is pleasing. All structural elements fit very tightly - there are no backlashes or gaps. The rigidity of the case is also at a height, because even with increased pressure, nothing creaks or sags, and the image on the display remains free of visible streaks and other artifacts.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy Tab E has a 9.6-inch PLS screen (1280 x 800, 157 ppi). The aspect ratio used (16:10) makes it equally comfortable to work with text and enjoy watching movies. The matrix is \u200b\u200bcovered with a protective glass (no name), under which there is a small air gap. Also on the screen there is a good oleophobic coating and an anti-reflective filter.

The screen offers pleasant color reproduction, high contrast and excellent viewing angles (up to 180 °), but average details. The brightness is adjustable only in manual mode. Its maximum value is at a good level, so you can count on comfortable work with information in bright sunlight. The minimum value allows you to interact with the device in complete darkness without much strain on the eyes.

Built-in touch pad supports up to 10 simultaneous clicks. Everything works quickly and accurately, without false positives and other inconveniences.

Audio subsystem

The Samsung Galaxy Tab E comes with a single multimedia speaker that delivers loud and fairly high-quality sound across the spectrum. It has high and medium frequencies, and also occasionally there is a hint of bass, which is quite enough for comfortable performance of everyday tasks.

The sound in headphones from third-party manufacturers (gaming and vacuum Vivanco HS 200 WT) turned out to be quite simple and uncomplicated. It also had a standard frequency range, but lacked a little headroom.

Camera

In the arsenal of the device there are two cameras: the main one is a 5-megapixel CMOS module with an f / 2.2 aperture and autofocus and the front one is a 2-megapixel CMOS module with an f / 2.8 aperture and a fixed focus. Both are capable of recording video at a maximum resolution of 720p at 30 fps.

The photo and video materials captured with their help are of good quality (given the class of the device). They may well be used for solving the simplest everyday tasks, for example, photographing text or video communication.

Proprietary camera software has a simple and intuitive interface. It contains several preset shooting formats and a decent manual mode, so it will suit both beginners and more experienced users without any problems.

Custominterface

Tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab E runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system, which is supplemented by the proprietary TouchWiz shell. This symbiosis looks and feels vigorous and very attractive.

Of the interesting features, we highlight the ability to quickly navigate to personal files from the main screen of the system (a special shortcut in the lower left corner) and an improved launch of applications from the side panel in terms of performance (triggered by swiping from the right edge). The function of simultaneously launching two applications has not gone anywhere.

The tablet settings menu has a nice design and contains all the necessary list of tools for editing the most important parameters of the device.

The operating system's speed is generally pleasant. Flip through desktops and launch applications smoothly and clearly. Only occasionally there are uncritical hiccups in animation.

Performance and communication capabilities

At the heart of the Samsung Galaxy Tab E is the rather exotic Spreadtrum T-Shark 2 processor (4 x 1.3 GHz), which is based on the 28nm ARM Cortex-A7 microarchitecture. The integrated graphics adapter ARM Mali-400 MP2 (500 MHz) with support for OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenVG 1.1 acts as a video accelerator. The amount of RAM is 1.5 GB, and the permanent memory is 8 GB, of which about 4.83 GB is available to the user.

The overall performance of the tablet is far from any record. But this does not prevent him from coping with all everyday tasks and running many modern games at low graphics settings. This is also accompanied by good energy efficiency, so even long-term and active work does not cause problems with heating the case.

The reviewed model is not equipped with a built-in radio module for SIM cards. However, there is a version of the gadget on the market with full 3G support and the ability to make phone calls. More traditional methods of data transmission are represented by Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n (2.4 GHz) modules. Also, the device is able to broadcast multimedia content using DLNA wireless technology.

Finding and connecting to Wi-Fi points is fast, and the established connection has good stability.

The built-in geolocation module can work correctly with GPS and GLONASS systems.

Autonomous work

The installed non-removable lithium-ion battery (5000 mAh) is sufficient for a full day of uninterrupted operation in conditions of moderate use. Activation of the power saving mode will allow you to count on higher levels of autonomy.

While watching HD video (MPEG-4 / AVC, M4V container, 4 Mbps stream) at 50% display brightness and Wi-Fi and GPS modules turned on, the device worked for almost 9.5 hours, and in the case of game simulation (Asphalt 8: Airborne) - about 4 hours at 100% display brightness.

The estimated battery life according to the PCMark benchmark reached 7.5 hours, while the GFXBench benchmark showed 430 minutes of working time. In both cases, the Wi-Fi and GPS modules were turned on, and the display brightness was at 50%.

To fully charge the battery, you need to spend about 5 hours connecting the device to the USB port of a stationary device.

Outcome

The tablet SamsungGalaxyTabE proved to be quite an interesting and well balanced gadget. It contains everything you need to become, if not a bestseller, then a very popular device on the market.

We liked the stylish and practical design, solid body materials and excellent build quality. The novelty is equipped with a good 9.6-inch PLS-screen and a loud enough multimedia speaker, which successfully copes with the output of almost any information. Thanks to the energy efficient hardware platform, the tablet is capable of performing all daily tasks (surfing the Internet, checking mail, watching videos, editing text, etc.), as well as running some modern mobile games at low graphics settings. In addition, it is worth noting a good level of autonomy, which, due to the built-in lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 5000 mAh and a very effective power saving mode, can reach about two days of uninterrupted operation from a single charge.

The only controversial nuance of the device is its price, reducing which the manufacturer could get rid of many serious competitors and attract a huge segment of potential buyers to its side. However, even without this cardinal step, the Samsung Galaxy Tab E deserves the attention of users as a well-balanced working tool with a pleasant design and a wide range of functionality.

Advantages:

  • stylish and practical design;
  • excellent build quality;
  • large and good screen with protective glass, oleophobic coating and anti-reflective filter;
  • high quality and loud multimedia speaker;
  • good camera modules;
  • good level of autonomy;
  • support for a range of branded accessories.

We express our gratitude to the companySamsung for the tablet provided for testing.

Samsung Galaxy Tab E is an excuse to get to know the world of tablets. As an inexpensive entry-level model, the Galaxy Tab E leaves a good impression. For serious tasks, this device definitely lacks power.

Late last year, Samsung unveiled a new entry-level tablet with a 9.6 ”1280x800 screen, quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB storage and two cameras. A modification with a 3G modem costs 1,700 rubles more than a model with only a Wi-Fi module.

Housing

Looks like other Samsung mobile devices. Let's note the similarities with the Galaxy Note 3 Neo smartphone. Unlike the flagship Galaxy Tab S2 with a metal body, the Galaxy Tab E is made of plastic. The back of the tablet has a raised texture.

The processing quality of the case raises no objections. Without exception, all elements fit tightly to each other. The corners are properly rounded. Thanks to the traditional Samsung rough back cover, the tablet does not slip out of your hands. The 5-megapixel camera protrudes a millimeter above the rear wall and is framed by a chrome frame. The 'Samsung' lettering is not chrome-plated, which sets the Galaxy Tab E apart from many other Samsung smartphones and tablets.

Weight 490 grams does not belong to the lightest category. However, other tablets of the corresponding price category, for example, Lenovo Tab 2 A10-70 or Acer Iconia Tab 10 A3, weigh no less.

The device case does not open. Access to internal components is only possible after laborious removal of the display. The battery is unfortunately not replaceable.

Specifications

The performance level is determined by the 32-bit Spreadtrum SC7730S processor. 4 ARM-cores Coretex-A7 are clocked at 1.3 GHz and interact with 1.5 GB of RAM. In comparison, the Lenovo Tab 2 A10-70 comes with 2GB of RAM, but costs more.

Of the 8 GB of Flash memory, 5 GB are available to the user. Supports microSD cards up to 128GB. With App2SD support, applications installed in the built-in memory are transferred to the SD card.

Unlike the premium Galaxy Tab S2 with USB and audio on the bottom, the Galaxy Tab E has the corresponding connectors on the top.

There is OTG support. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Tab E does not support MHL and NFC.

Right: volume control, power key

Left: microSD card slot

Bottom: nothing

Top: USB jack, audio jack

Software

The default Android 4.4 Kitkat operating system is outdated. Hopefully Samsung will release an OS update for the Galaxy Tab E.

Typically, the tablet responds quickly to user input. From time to time, the display of animations may experience delays, which are noticeable mainly for users who are used to more productive tablets. Samsung on its website talks about an improved multitasking mode for working with two applications at the same time. Applications must also support multitasking.

By default, third-party applications are installed on the tablet along with the standard Google programs. These apps are easy to uninstall if you don't like them.

Communication and GPS modules

The WLAN module operates at 2.4 GHz. IEEE 802.11 b / g / n standards are supported; the data transfer rate is up to 600 Mbps.

Built-in cameras

Equipped with two cameras. The main camera is located on the rear panel and has a resolution of 5 megapixels. The front camera costs 2 megapixels. Neither camera has LED flash. The rear camera has autofocus. Video is recorded at a resolution of 1280x720 and a frame rate of 30 fps.

With sufficient lighting, the rear camera allows you to get good pictures. The colors, however, could have been richer. Clarity and detail match the price of a tablet. When shooting in the dark, the camera module and the corresponding firmware do not do well. With a lack of lighting, there is a loss of sharpness and quite noticeable digital noise. The front-facing camera, now more commonly referred to as a selfie camera, is exactly what it intended. It is enough for Skype conferences and small self-portraits. Like most comparable tablets, the Galaxy Tab E's front-facing camera only offers a fixed focal length.

Contents of delivery

The tablet only comes with a charger. Branded cover-cover is purchased separately. There are white, brown and black covers to choose from.

Input and control devices

The use of a capacitive touchscreen is not a problem. Up to 5 simultaneous touches are recognized. Competitors (Lenovo TAB 2 A10) offer recognition of up to 10 simultaneous touches.

Click on the picture to enlarge

The default on-screen keyboard is Samsung's own design. There are automatic hints. The keyboard can be shrunk or removed from the screen. When the tablet is oriented horizontally, using the keyboard is convenient. After a few tries, you can reach about half of the typing speed achieved when typing with a 10-finger method on a conventional keyboard.

Screen

The 9.6-inch screen has a low resolution of 1280x800. The pixel density is 157 ppi; upon closer inspection, the pixels are visible on the screen. Lenovo TAB 2 offers a 10-inch screen with 1920x1200 resolution and 224 ppi pixel density. But the brightness of the Galaxy Tab E screen is a record 452 cd / m2 and does not decrease even when used for mobile without connecting to a power supply.

The black color at the maximum brightness of the Galaxy Tab E screen does not appear saturated, as evidenced by the black level value of 0.49 cd / m2. The Lenovo Tab 10 has a black level of 0.19 cd / m2, but the Tab 10's screen brightness is more than 100 cd / m2 lower than the Galaxy Tab E.

Color and grayscale errors determined by CalMAN gave DeltaE values \u200b\u200bbetween 5 and 6. Fairly mediocre for an IPS screen, but normal for the budget price range. Expensive tablets like the Galaxy Tab S2 offer a DeltaE of less than 2.

The 6820K color temperature approaches the 6500K reference in terms of warm colors.

The Galaxy Tab E is well suited for mobile use outside the home. Despite the glossy screen surface, the image is visible even in bright daylight. However, the tablet cannot be used if the screen is in direct sunlight.

Thanks to the IPS matrix, the tablet has excellent viewing angles. The colors and brightness of the picture do not change even when the screen is positioned at a wide angle.

Performance

Performance is determined by the Spreadtrum SC7730SE processor with 4 ARM Cortex-A7 cores and up to 1.3 GHz. In power saving mode or as directed by the user, the processor frequency is reduced to 770 MHz. The Cortex-A7 architecture is more than 4 years old, so in terms of performance, today it belongs to the budget level.

Graphics performance is determined by the ARM Mali-400 MP4 core, which is now used primarily in smartphones. For tablets, Mali-450 is more commonly used. In almost all tests, the Galaxy Tab E lags far behind the competition and performs at the level of 2014 devices.

Games

Poor performance is not a reason to give up games. Traditional and casual (which is played from time to time, between times, most often - to "kill" time) games do not present problems for the tablet. The Galaxy Tab E does a great job with Angry Birds.

Asphalt 8 starts only at minimum settings and lags constantly.

Heat

Only flattering words can be said about the heat dissipation of the case. The temperature does not rise to an alarming or uncomfortable level during standby or under load. The maximum temperature of the hottest spot on the tablet surface was 34 ° C. The PSU also heats up moderately: up to 36 ° C in standby mode and up to 38 ° C under load. For comparison, the thinner and more powerful Samsung Galaxy S2 tablet heats up to 41 ° C. Competitors from the Galaxy Tab E price range behave in a similar way to the tablet in terms of heating.

Speaker

The built-in speaker is very good for a rather thin mobile device like the Galaxy Tab E. The sound quality is good enough for watching YouTube videos. Voices are clearly distinguishable, speech is transmitted clearly. You will need to connect speakers to play bass.

Energy consumption

In standby mode, the tablet consumes just over 4 watts. The maximum power consumption under load is 6.2 W, which is not much. Performance tablets with a 10 ”screen require 50% more power.

Battery life

The Galaxy Tab E has a 5000 mAh Li-Ion battery. That's 2,200 mAh less than the Lenovo TAB 2 and 2,700 mAh less than the Acer Iconia Tab 10 A3. According to the manufacturer, the Galaxy Tab E has a battery life of up to 8 hours in surfing mode.

First of all, we checked the battery life under load. We set the tablet brightness to maximum and ran the Stability Test. The tablet turned off after 4.5 hours. Lenovo Tab 2 A10 lasted much longer, 7 hours. Iconia Tab lasted half an hour longer than Galaxy Tab E.

The most important use case for a tablet is surfing the internet. At medium brightness, the Galaxy Tab E lasted 8.5 hours. Opponents show similar results, only Lenovo Yoga 2 pulled ahead, having worked for 12.5 hours.

Finally, we determined the maximum possible battery life. The Galaxy Tab E lasted 14 hours at minimum screen brightness and running the web navigation script.

Good for exploring the world of tablets. It has a built-in Wi-Fi module and 2 cameras, it is assembled in a high-quality case and has balanced dimensions. The IPS display is very bright and outperforms competitors' displays. A fly in the ointment is tablet performance. It is sufficient only when using the device for surfing and from time to time for mini-games. Noteworthy is the low heat dissipation of the Galaxy Tab E.

Verdict:

At the very end of 2015, Samsung released a new budget tablet with a 9.7-inch diagonal. Equipped with a quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, the Tab E offers extremely basic features - but with a low price tag of around $ 200 (£ 15,000). Even at this price point, a certain standard can be expected, which is why the serial tablet offers two cameras and an HD display. 3G is not an obligatory addition, the 3G model costs 1,500 rubles more. The Samsung Galaxy Tab E 9.6 Wi-Fi came in for review, and we're going to take a look at the tablet versus competitors like the Acer Iconia Tab 10 A3. Of course, we are also going to mention tablets from other manufacturers during our review and the list will include more expensive tablets, for example, which costs three times as much.

Visually, the Galaxy Tab E looks very similar to other Samsung mobile devices, but in fact it bears an odd resemblance to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo smartphone. Unlike the Galaxy Tab S2, which will cost users $ 435 (R32,500), Samsung has used a plastic casing that the company claims has a fabric style, likely due to the texture on the back.

In terms of design, Samsung has done the right thing. The different parts of the tablet fit together without gaps, and the corners are nicely rounded. Thanks to the rough back of the tablet, it doesn't slip in your hands. The Galaxy Tab E 9.6's 5MP camera protrudes slightly and has a chrome bezel. The Samsung logo is not chrome-plated, unlike many smartphones and tablets.

At 490 grams, the Tab E is not one of the lightest tablets on the market. Other competitors at this price point - like the Lenovo Tab 2 A10-70 and the Acer Iconia Tab 10 A3 - weigh about the same.

You can't just open the tablet, but that's Samsung's intention. The only way to get to the inside is to remove the display. Therefore, it is also not possible to replace the battery on your own.

Galaxy Tab E 9.6 specifications

The Spreadtrum SC7730S processor is responsible for the computing power of the tablet. A 32-bit ARM quad-core processor (Cortex A7) clocked at up to 1300 MHz with support for 1.5 GB of RAM. Although the tablet costs the same, the Lenovo Tab 2 A10-70 comes with 2GB of RAM.

The review Samsung Galaxy Tab E 9.6 came with 8GB of flash storage, of which only 5GB are available to the user. The storage capacity can be expanded with a microSD card up to 128 GB. Since App2SD is supported, installed apps can be moved to SD card.

The Galaxy Tab E 9.6 has a headphone jack on the top edge of the tablet, which is different from the key positioning of its older brother. Considering we're considering a low-cost tablet, it doesn't have MHL or NFC, and neither does OTG.

Galaxy Tab E 9.6 software

The preinstalled Android 4.4 KitKat OS lags somewhat behind its contemporaries - we'll have to wait and see if Samsung is going to offer an upgrade to.

Operation of the Galaxy Tab E 9.6 is generally possible without stuttering, although the animation sometimes lags a little. Users who are used to working with larger powerful tablets are likely to notice this in behavior. On its homepage, Samsung promises better multitasking, meaning it allows you to use multiple apps in parallel. Apps must support this feature, however. During our test, YouTube and the browser worked in parallel without a hitch. It should also be mentioned that the Galaxy Tab E does not support S Voice.

Out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy Tab E 9.6 contains not only the standard apps, but also some third-party apps (which can be uninstalled if needed). Overall, the software package is far from generous. In addition to the well-known Google programs, Samsung offers six additional apps pre-installed.

Communication and GPS Galaxy Tab E 9.6

The wireless connection of the Samsung Galaxy Tab E 9.6 tablet is courtesy of the 2.4 GHz wLAN module. According to the specifications, the standard IEEM 802.11 b / g / n supports speeds up to 600 Mbps. At the same time, the signal quality is quite good at -48 dBm (signal strength 78%). We also checked the signal strength right next to the router: we got -22dBm (100% signal strength).

Samsung Galaxy Tab E 9.6, provided for the review, does not support other mobile communication standards, although there is a 3G version that supports 3G and 4G networks. The surcharge is currently about 1,500 rubles.

The tablet can use both GPS and GLONASS to locate the location. The connection process takes some time, even if the apartment is located on the top floor of a 5-storey building. Outdoors, connections are made quickly and accurately.

On the GPS side, we're concerned that there are noticeable differences between the Galaxy Tab E 9.6 and the Garmin Edge 500 cycling bike, which is of course a specially targeted device. Even so, the tablet still does a good job, it's just that a professional device is much faster and more accurate.

Cameras & Multimedia Galaxy Tab E 9.6

The Samsung Galaxy Tab E is equipped with dual cameras. The main unit sits on the back and comes with a 5MP resolution. The front camera unit has a resolution of only 2 megapixels. The camera has an LED flash, only the main camera supports auto focus. Video recording is possible in a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels at 30 frames per second. A closer analysis reveals decent photo quality, overall the camera is capable of taking decent photos as long as the environment is well lit. Sharpness and detail are still fair given the price of the tablet, but colors could have been richer. In low light conditions, the camera and, accordingly, the software, suffer much more, exhibiting graininess. The front unit, often referred to as a “selfie” camera, does exactly what it was designed to do. The camera is suitable for Skype conference calls or simple selfies. The focal length is fixed, but most comparable tablets are no different in this department.

Accessories Galaxy Tab E 9.6

The lack of specialized accessories is becoming quite standard for a tablet in this price category, only the power adapter is included. Highlighted accessories are few too. On the official website, you can get leather as an additional cover. The panel is available in white, brown and black, and is sold for about 2,000 rubles.

Galaxy Tab E 9.6 warranty

In Russia, the tablet is covered by a two-year warranty against defects, although the battery is not covered under the general warranty and is only covered for 12 months. Accessories are only guaranteed for 6 months.

Input and management

The capacitive touchscreen recognizes contact without a hitch, the tablet can recognize up to five fingers at a time. Other devices, such as the Lenovo Tab 2 A10, are capable of recognizing up to ten fingers.

Samsung uses its own virtual keyboard which supports automatic text recognition and swyping. The user can also reduce the size of the keyboard and move it around the screen. In the landscape orientation of the tablet, typing is not a problem, although we have never used more than two or three fingers on each hand. After some practice, we were able to achieve about half the speed of a regular keyboard and switch to the 10-finger method.

Display Galaxy Tab E 9.6

Samsung's new budget tablet is equipped with a 9.6-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. Due to the low resolution and low density of 157 pixels per inch, individual pixels can be read with the naked eye. The Lenovo Tab 2 A10 does a better job as its 10-inch display supports 1920 x 1200 resolution at 224 pixels per inch. Even though the resolution is not that great, the average brightness remains very acceptable at 452 cd / m2. Thus, the glossy panel can resist glare. The tablet maintains maximum brightness even when not connected to the network, which is of course very important.

At maximum brightness, blacks appear undersaturated. Our measurements confirm a black value of 0.49 cd / m 2. Again, the Lenovo Tab 2 A10 beats the competition with 0.191 cd / m2. The brightness of the Tab 2 A10 is, however, 100 cd / m2 lower.

Of course, tablets are well suited for mobile use, so we are very interested in how the Galaxy Tab E 9.6 performs in the field. Even with its glossy panel, you will be able to work in bright environments. We recommend staying out of direct sunlight as it can overwhelm the display.

The IPS panel guarantees a stable viewing angle and remains visible even at very shallow angles. Only at the most extreme tilt angles did we start to notice the shade.

PerformanceGalaxyTabE 9.6

The 9.6-inch tablet comes with a Spreadtrum SC7730SE processor. It is a quad-core processor (ARM Cortex A7) that runs at 1300 MHz, but the clock can drop to 770 MHz if the power requirement is not high or power consumption needs to be reduced. ARM Cortex A7 was released four years ago, so in terms of performance, the processor is entry-level. The graphics are handled by ARM Mali 400 MP4, which can only be found in some smartphones today. The Mali 450 is much more commonly used at this price point. Consequently, the review tablet performs worse than its competitors on almost all benchmarks, and the tablet can only be compared with its competitors in 2014.

The clock speed readings during the 3DMark and PCMark benchmarks also explain the poor results, as the processor barely runs at its rated speed. From time to time we have seen dips up to 400 MHz.

Games on Galaxy Tab E 9.6

Less than stellar performance does not have a significant impact on gaming performance. Old and light games are no problem for the new Samsung tablet. Angry Birds works without any stuttering. Demanding games like Asphalt 8 are a different story, the game frame rate is too low. Gameplay is only possible at the lowest settings, but we still experience some lag and stuttering.

With regard to temperature, we can only point out positive things. Downtime and stress are not a problem. The hottest spot is located on the display panel and it only reaches +34 degrees Celsius. The power adapter also does not heat up: we measured only +35.7 degrees Celsius at idle and +38.4 degrees Celsius under load. Thinner and more powerful, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 reaches 41 degrees Celsius. Other competitors in the same price range are quite comparable.

And before moving on, we also want to take a look at the clock speed. We ran the Galaxy Tab E 9.6 in a stability test. Even though we observed dips to low frequencies during the benchmarks, this test shows a constant speed. Software update is likely the problem. Graphics simulations run freely at first, but frame rates will drop over time.

Speaker Galaxy Tab E 9.6

Considering the size and mobility ratio, the speaker is actually decent enough for watching multiple episodes of a TV show or occasional YouTube videos. The maximum volume is quite high so voices can be easily heard. Having bass and a decent soundstage requires the use of external speakers or headphones.

Power consumption

At idle, the review tablet never consumed more than 4 watts. Even under load, the maximum power consumption remained fairly low at around 6.2W. Tablets of the same size, but with better performance, require up to 50% more power. In standby mode, the tablet consumes only 0.1 watts. When the Galaxy Tab E 9.6 is turned off, the power consumption drops to zero.

Battery life

The review tablet was powered by a 5000mAh Li-Ion battery - an astounding 2200mAh less than the Lenovo Tab 2 A10 and 2700mAh less than the Acer Iconia Tab 10 A3. Samsung claims 8 hours of battery life while surfing the Internet - and we're going to take a closer look.

First, we check the minimum runtime by turning the display to maximum brightness and running a "stability test". The tablet "ran out" after about 4.5 hours. The Lenovo Tab 2 A10 lasted over seven hours. Acer Iconia Tab beat Galaxy Tab E 9.6 by 30 minutes. The most important test simulates web browsing. At medium brightness, the tablet lasted about 8.5 hours, competitors showed a similar time. A separate example was the Lenovo Yoga 2 A10, which surprised us with its 12.5 hours.

And last but not least, we also look at the maximum possible battery life. With brightness kept to a minimum and simulating reading, the Galaxy Tab E 9.6 we reviewed lasted a little over 14 hours.

Verdict

The new Samsung Galaxy Tab E 9.6 is the ideal device for your first entry into the tablet world. The overview tablet demonstrated reliability and all the necessary communication modules, as well as two cameras. Build quality is flawless and size remains a good compromise. The IPS display is very bright and even better than what is usually offered at this price point. The main disadvantage is performance: the hardware could have been a little more powerful as the frequency drops occur early in the benchmarks. Users who want a tablet for web browsing and rare games won't face this problem, however. We would also like to mention the tablet's low temperature under load and the loud speaker.

/10 The Samsung Galaxy Tab E invites users to explore the world of tablets. The all-new and cheap entry-level tablet leaves us with a good overall impression, but the lack of performance prevents it from getting the top score.

8 Overall Score

Verdict:

The Samsung Galaxy Tab E invites users to explore the world of tablets. The all-new and cheap entry-level tablet leaves us with a good overall impression, but the lack of performance prevents it from getting the top score.

Samsung really redefined its 2015 mobile product line. And this applies not only to smartphones, but also to tablets, which have also been translated into a "letter" designation.

The first sign was, from which we expected about the same "goodies" as from a similar smartphone series Galaxy A. In particular, these are more or less decent characteristics and a metal case. However, the device pulled from the force to the middle level: it was made of plastic, the screen received a low resolution, although otherwise the hardware is quite decent. By the way, the display, among other things, got a more "square" aspect ratio of 4: 3, that is, like the iPad and iPad mini.

Samsung Galaxy Tab E, also known as SM-T560 or SM-T561 (with 3G module), is already pulling for the second "swallow". If someone does not know, then the Galaxy E smartphones are in many ways similar to the Galaxy A, but made of plastic. Has the E series become simplistic in the tablet segment as well? Yes, it did, although you can't tell at first glance.

We got our hands on the SM-T561 - Galaxy Tab E with a 9.6-inch screen and a 3G module. This is the first time Samsung uses such an unusual diagonal. At the same time, the aspect ratio remained "elongated", 16:10. In terms of other characteristics, the device clearly lags behind the Galaxy Tab A, although overall it looks interesting. Presumably, this is a replacement for the inexpensive Galaxy Tab 4 line, a kind of failed Galaxy Tab 5. Let's see what the pros and cons of this device.

Galaxy Tab E video review

First of all, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the Galaxy Tab E video review - the tablet looks quite unusual and our video will allow you to better understand how it looks live.

Now let's move on to the main part of the review.

Design

Samsung is not particularly stressed about the appearance of inexpensive tablets. She just doesn't need it for several reasons. One of them is that its products are already popular, the company's brand is very strong in itself. But various Chinese manufacturers, whom no one knows, even in budget devices, need to invent something "like" in order to be noticeable, to stand out from the rest.

Galaxy Tab E is a regular rectangular without any frills. Its body is plastic and black. There will probably be other colors, for example, white. From the outside, the tablet looks boring, without a highlight. On the other hand, it is easily recognizable as Samsung - all the classic attributes of the company's products are in place.

The most unusual thing about a tablet is its portrait orientation. Recall that its screen has a large diagonal of 9.6 ", but Samsung still placed the control buttons on the narrow side, and not on the wide, as it has done so far on its tablets with a diagonal of more than 10". A similar solution is applied on the "square" Galaxy Tab A 9.7, but the Galaxy Tab E is more elongated, it is noticeably higher, which is further emphasized by a thinner frame on the right and left. In general, the manufacturer suggests holding it like a smartphone, albeit with two hands.

The back cover is black and has an interesting relief texture. It is somewhat reminiscent of what was made under the skin. But in the case of the Samsung Galaxy Tab E, the coating is rougher and tougher. But it is still pleasant to the touch and the tablet does not slip out of the hands. By the way, all the elements are also located at the back, "like a smartphone" - we mean the camera, which is located at the top of the short side.

It remains to add that the Galaxy Tab E is superbly built. Although it is a low-cost product, all panels fit perfectly together. It seems to be made in a one-piece case. And very strong. The thickness of the device is not the smallest - about 8 mm. Yes, and the weight is felt, but still don't forget about the 9.6-inch display!

In principle, we liked the design of the Galaxy Tab E - austere, classic, without unnecessary "ergonomic" bulges, "bulges" and other "bulges". The embossed back cover also looks and feels great.

Connectors and controls

Despite the fact that the Samsung Galaxy Tab E looks like an overgrown smartphone, it has only one speaker and that is not at all above the screen. Although, of course, you can hold it with one hand by simultaneously practicing stretching the fingers and palms, but even in this case, the face will be 2/3 of the screen length - it will be far from the spoken microphone.

The manufacturer's logo is located above the screen. Without a speaker, he looks a little "lonely" there, but in any case he is accompanied by the lens of the front camera.

Below, under the screen, as always Samsung has three buttons: Task Manager, Back and Home. The first two are sensory and the third is mechanical. The buttons are painted in white and are perfectly visible without backlighting. However, there is no backlighting at all - budget devices, according to the company, do not need it.

At the back, only the rear camera and the external speaker to the left of it are of interest. The camera lacks a flash, although taking pictures from a tablet is not the best pastime.

Power and volume buttons are located on the right. And they are located very close to each other - several times it turned out to miss and instead of the power button, the volume was pressed up.

All connectors are placed on the upper end, of which there are only two: microUSB and 3.5 mm minijack. We wanted to start scolding the Galaxy Tab E for USB from above, since it is extremely inconvenient to talk while charging, but we remembered in time that it was a tablet. Although he can make calls (if you have a model SM-T561, like ours), then it will be either a speakerphone or through a headset.

The microphone, by the way, is located where the phones are - at the bottom end. But all the same - there is no spoken dynamics, and therefore holding the tablet like a regular handset, holding it to your ear, is simply pointless.

And the left end remains, where the compartments for cards are located: microSIM and microSD. If you have an SM-T560 tablet model, then only the second slot will remain.

The compartments are closed with caps that easily fold to the side - a similar option Samsung uses on all its tablets. The cards are inserted deep enough, you may need some kind of pointed object if you have recently had the luck of cutting your nails. After a characteristic click, they will be held by the latch. If you suddenly have problems with this, then our short video will help you solve them:

In terms of ergonomics, the Samsung Galaxy Tab E is a typical South Korean tablet. It lies well in the hands, moderately thin, not the heaviest, buttons and connectors are located normally - anyway, you don't have to work with them often.

By the way, the case or cover for Galaxy Tab E is of interest. Samsung usually produces similar accessories for tablets itself, but in this case it can avoid this, since the device is budgetary. In general, if anyone has read our Galaxy Tab A review, then that tablet has special mounts for the cover on the back. The Galaxy Tab E has nothing like this. If it will be possible to hide it somewhere, then in a small case-bag.

Screen

Everyone knows that Samsung makes the best screens. And if not all, then you have now learned it. However, this does not mean that the company is installing these very "best screens" in all of its devices - only flagships have been awarded this honor. And Galaxy Tab E is not one of those. In fact, even the Galaxy Tab A tablets got 1024x768 displays, both in 8-inch and 9.7-inch versions. The picture looks grainy on them, it clearly lacks clarity.

Samsung Galaxy Tab E, if anyone has read the introduction carefully, is one step below the Galaxy Tab A. So, in theory, the tablet should not differ in high resolution. It is not, although it turned out to be higher than that of the "square" Galaxy Tab A - 1280x800. With a diagonal of 9.6 ", this provides a pixel density of 157 ppi, which is not very much. But let's not forget - all inexpensive 10.1" Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets with numbers from 1 to 4 have the same. to be even worse - just remember the budget 9-inch tablet TurboPad 912, which passed through our hands in 2014. It has a resolution of only 1024x600 pixels.

By itself, the Galaxy Tab E's screen draws a maximum rating of "mediocre". But this is if we compare it with the reference Super AMOLED displays from the same Samsung. For its price point, the screen offers decent image quality. It uses an inexpensive IPS-matrix with moderately wide viewing angles. That is, at an angle, the picture fades, loses in brightness, but the colors are not inverted. In the sun, not all details can be distinguished accurately, but more or less you can work with the tablet.

As for objective measurements, the maximum brightness of the screen reached 402.18 cd / m2, which is generally a decent result, especially for an inexpensive product. However, how "inexpensive" it is remains to be seen. The black brightness was 0.49 cd / m2, which, according to our measurements of other devices, is above average. The most common value is 0.35-0.38 cd / m 2. In other words, the Galaxy Tab E's black depth is not very high - it looks gray at maximum brightness. That said, that didn't stop the tablet from showing a contrast ratio of 821: 1 - not bad, but we saw better.

The color gamut turned out to be noticeably narrower than the sRGB space. Most of all, he lost the reds and greens. We often see this kind of coverage in many laptops, but the screens are installed there worse than in tablets and smartphones. In general, it is not very noticeable by eye, but the color rendering of the Galaxy Tab E display is not the best. However, most likely won't notice.

But what really surprised us was the color temperature. Despite the obvious cheapness of the matrix, its schedule is even - this is already good. But the best part is that the white balance is very close to optimal - the temperature varies from 6400K to 6500K, while the reference is the same 6500K. Similar values \u200b\u200bwere seen only once on a tablet (and at what level did we measure the screen brightness on a Fujitsu tablet? The first responder received an incentive gift), which was produced back in 2012. In all other devices, the white balance is disturbed towards blue - the temperature is increased, which makes the picture colder. But on the Galaxy Tab E, it's actually warmer, and because of this, the screen is just more pleasant to look at.

The gamma curve looks good too. For the most part, it runs exactly with the reference curve 2.2, only slightly deviating in the lower part. But again, this will not be visible to the eye. And so this deviation means that the dark areas of the image are displayed slightly darker than they should.

Despite the fact that the Galaxy Tab E 9.6 tablet is large and all 10 fingers on its screen can fit as easy as shelling pears, its screen recognizes only 5 simultaneous touches. Consequence of savings, nothing can be done.

The Galaxy Tab E's display does not have any special settings. A thin substring of parameters is left to more expensive devices with AMOLED screens.

In general, we liked the way the Samsung Galaxy Tab E shows the image. An inexpensive matrix was clearly chosen for it, but it cannot be attributed to the worst. Still, the viewing angles are wide enough, the brightness margin is decent, and you can write poetry about white balance. But do not forget that this display has a low resolution, it does not behave very well in the sun, and the color rendering could be better.

Camera

As a rule, tablets are not equipped with a good camera. Even the flagship is equipped with a maximum of "average" sensor - it does not reach the top smartphones of the same generation. In principle, everything is logical - why a good camera for a tablet, if it is banally inconvenient to take pictures, and it is not always at hand like a phone. In short, the Galaxy Tab E boasts a 5-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras.

We are familiar with the camera application from other Samsung products,. No clock changes have been made here, the feature set is quite typical. There are additional shooting modes, such as Retouch, Paonrama, Night, Sports and others. Some filters can be applied in real time.

All settings are presented in a tabular grid. Configurable white balance, ISO level, metering modes, autofocus and so on.

The maximum shooting resolution is achieved at an aspect ratio of 4: 3, while the default is set to 3.9 MP or a 5: 3 ratio.

As for the quality of shooting, we note an unusual incident - before shooting, what is displayed on the screen looks absolutely nothing. This can be seen even from the above screenshots of the interface - the picture is there, sorry, fairy. But after taking the picture, you can see a noticeable improvement, even on a regular computer. With a higher quality it attracts a rating of "below average": the camera misses a little with the white balance, the frames are overexposed, and in some places they lack sharpness. But for a budget tablet, everything looks more or less decent. Even in poor lighting conditions, something "stretches". It seems that Samsung has applied its advanced photo processing algorithms on top of a cheap photo sensor.

The maximum video recording resolution is 1280x720. Full HD is unfortunately not supported.

Video is captured with about the same success that a photo is taken. The sharpness of the picture is about the same, as well as the work of the automatic white balance. Moreover, the resolution is not the highest.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab E's two-megapixel front camera captures only “square” shots with a 4: 3 ratio.

The quality of the front camera is even worse. The clarity of the image is lower, frames often come out either overexposed or too dark. In general, it is not suitable for selfies.

The front sensor shoots video with an even lower resolution - only 640x480 or VGA.

The video looks weak, but, in general, not entirely scary. In principle, it is more or less clear what and who is in the frame.

The cameras of the Galaxy Tab E are far from the best, but good image processing algorithms save them. Samsung has become much more experienced in this matter, and therefore the quality can be assessed as “okay”. Moreover, this is a tablet.

Galaxy Tab E specifications

At the time of writing in May 2015, we only know of one version of the Galaxy Tab E - the one with a 9.6-inch screen. However, it is available in two versions: SM-T560 (Wi-Fi only) and SM-T561 (with 3G module). However, presumably, Samsung will release a smaller version of the tablet. True, the screen diagonal is still difficult to imagine - after all, the company has not yet made 9.6-inch devices.

The specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Tab E don't look the least bit interesting. In many ways, these are the parameters of a budget device, which is why the table contains the specifications of the cheap tablet that we reviewed in 2014. Both of these products are similar, although Samsung is undoubtedly more expensive.

The South Korean manufacturer is clearly partial to Spreadtrum products. This is not the first time he uses its processors as the basis for his devices. In 2015, we already saw Galaxy J1 smartphones based on it, and now a tablet. Moreover, the chip model of these devices is absolutely the same - SC8830. But at the same time, the phone has a dual-core version, while the Galaxy Tab E has a quad-core version. The cores work at a frequency of up to 1.3 GHz. Since they are based on the Cortex-A7 architecture, you cannot expect high performance. Among other things, the Spreadtrum SC8830 processor is made using a 40 nm process technology, which, after the 14-nm Samsung Exynos 7420 (Galaxy S6), looks like the last century.

A dual-core version of the Mali-400 MP2 accelerator is used as a video card. By 2015 standards, this is already a weak budget solution, not very suitable for powerful 3D games. However, you can still play on a tablet, although it is not always comfortable due to the quality of the picture or the speed of rendering.

But the amount of RAM of the Galaxy Tab E is clearly allocated - it is installed as much as one and a half gigabytes! This is pretty decent for a budget tablet! We wouldn't be surprised if we offered the Galaxy Tab E a gigabyte of RAM. Although with Samsung it will start to install even less. However, let's look at the Galaxy Tab J family of tablets - probably they will get the very "minimum".

There is 8 GB of flash memory - not very rich at all. But thanks for not 4 GB. Meanwhile, the more advanced Galaxy Tab A tablets offer a minimum of 16GB out of the box. And yes, only a little more than 5 GB is available to a user out of 8. In this case, expansion with microSD cards is possible.

The communication capabilities of the Galaxy Tab E are entirely derived from what the Spreadtrum SC8830 chip offers. In particular, it is not the fastest version of the Wi-Fi 802.11n and 3G standard in the relatively slow version. Of course, there is no 4G here. The Galaxy Tab A has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor.

From a larger size, the Galaxy Tab E has budget specs. Only 1.5 GB of RAM is allocated. Everything else, processor, flash memory, video card, communications, cameras, screen, is the norm for inexpensive devices.

Performance testing

If we take the not so distant past, then in it we tested the 9-inch tablet TurboPad 912. True, it refers not just to budget, but ultra-budget solutions, while in theory the Galaxy Tab E is one step higher. It is all the more interesting to compare their operating speed.

The TurboPad 912 is powered by a MediaTek MT8382 4-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz. They use Cortex-A7 cores, and therefore there should not be much difference with the Galaxy Tab E. There is no big difference, but a small one - yes. And not in favor of the device from Samsung, judging by the old test Smartbench 2012. But the frequency is higher in the South Korean tablet!

In Antutu, the Samsung Galaxy Tab E was able to come out ahead, but only slightly. This difference will definitely not be visible to the eye.

The SunSpider browser test was again taken by TurboPad by a noticeable margin. We remind you that here the higher the value, the worse. We only have two questions about these results: first, how does Spreadtrum manage to make such weak processors, and second, why does Samsung persist and refuse to install MediaTek chips? However, let's take a look at their performance in 3D.

In the old electopia test, the Galaxy Tab E is still ahead. Apparently, its video card operates at a higher frequency. By the way, both devices were run in the same 800x480 resolution.

The more serious 3DRating benchmark remained with the TurboPad 912. But the lower resolution of the tablet screen, namely 1024x600, could have an effect here. Recall that Galaxy Tab E has a resolution of 1280x800, and therefore rendering such a picture takes more resources.

GFX Bench is a very hard 3D test, which was carried out under the same conditions on both tablets (T-Rex Offscreen results). According to the obtained figures, both devices provide the same performance under serious load. Another thing is that less than 4 FPS is generally “zero without a stick”. As such, the gaming potential of tablets is low.

The autonomy of the Galaxy Tab E, measured, turned out to be not the most outstanding, although it cannot be called bad - everything is "mediocre" here too. But let's remember that we are dealing with an inexpensive device. In turn, TurboPad 912 works much less - its autonomy is far from perfect. This is the main difference between ultra-budget solutions and little-known manufacturers.

As you can see, the Galaxy Tab E's main power consumption is its screen. Moreover, the charge consumption can be increased by tasks that load the processor: video playback, launching games.

With more to say about the performance of the Galaxy Tab E, it is absolutely nothing outstanding. According to the test results, the operating speed does not even match the average rating. Moreover, this affects the smoothness of the interface - not always, but there are short delays. This is a clear consequence of the use of a completely inefficient, but cheap, processor.

Games on Galaxy Tab E

You might have guessed that the Galaxy Tab E is not a gaming tablet, to put it mildly. However, here are our results of running some games on it.

  • Riptide GP2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Asphalt 7: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Asphalt 8: noticeable delays are visible;
  • N.O.V.A. 3: Near Orbit: some delays are visible;

  • Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour: some delays are visible;

  • Modern Combat 5: Blackout: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Dead trigger: some delays are visible;

  • Dead trigger 2: some delays are visible;

  • Real Racing 3: some delays are visible;

  • Max payne: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Need For Speed: Most Wanted: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Shadowgun: Dead Zone: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Frontline Commando: Normandy: noticeable delays are visible;

  • Frontline commando 2: some delays are visible;

  • Eternity warriors 2: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Trial Xtreme 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Dead effect: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Plants vs Zombies 2: there are noticeable delays;

  • Iron Man 3: excellent, the game does not slow down;

  • Dead target: excellent, the game does not slow down.

Not all games work on the Galaxy Tab E without a pretense. Some slow down noticeably, while others, to prevent this from happening, greatly reduce the quality of the picture. So this Samsung tablet is not suitable for 3D games, although more or less they work on it.

BY

And only the software remains. Samsung Galaxy Tab E is rather boring in this respect, as it is a typical Korean tablet with a minimum of proprietary additions. Do not forget that it belongs to the company's inexpensive products, and therefore some special software is not assigned to it by its status.

Powered by Galaxy Tab E running Android 4.4.4. This once again underlines its "budget" - if only because the Galaxy Tab A was "awarded" Android 5.0.2. And this despite the fact that Tab A was released earlier than Tab E! In general, there is an artificial distinction.

Samsung's TouchWIZ shell looks typical and even familiar. We don't see much of a difference compared to the Galaxy Tab S: the desktop, the same widgets and icons. They even left the buttons for calling the file manager in the lower left corner and applications in the lower right.

The applications themselves are few. Although no, not a little. It's just that their set from "bare" Android is almost the same. Of course, many have been replaced by Samsung counterparts.

The task manager, after the tabbed style of Android 5, looks strange. But it works as well as before - applications are closed with a simple "swipe".

The notification panel is combined with the quick options panel. Here is the "Samsung default" used by the company in its 2014 products.

The only additional application of interest is Hancom Office. Initially, it is available in a limited version of the viewer, but in the lower left corner there is a button that opens GALAXY Apps, from where you can download the full version of the package.

Hword, Hcell and Hshow apps are available. These are, respectively, a text editor, spreadsheets and presentations.

Otherwise, the Galaxy Tab E offers a completely typical set of programs. For example, the Clock application, which combines an alarm clock, world clock, stopwatch and timer.

Simple calculator from Samsung. Convenient and functional.

Simple notes if you don't need an advanced office editor.

The already familiar S Planner calendar.

Typical file manager "My Files" from Samsung in a tablet edition. Knows how to group files by type, perform basic operations.

The settings do not offer any special parameters. They are made in a light style, on the left there is a list of sections. Of the interesting, we can only note the modes "Multiple windows" and extreme energy saving.

Output

The Samsung Galaxy Tab E is your average budget tablet. Perhaps not the cheapest Samsung is capable of, but close to it. For this reason, this circumstance entails certain consequences. So it concerns low screen resolutions, not the best camera, old version of Android. However, what is most disappointing about this device is the use of the slow processor from Spreadtrum.

On the other hand, the situation is still not so awful, but it is quite “okay” for itself. After all, the Galaxy Tab E has certain advantages. For example, it is perfectly assembled, available both in the version with 3G and without it. The screen, if you don't pay attention to the resolution, is still more or less normal, and the bad camera sensor is compensated by good image processing algorithms, which is why they are still "edible". Don't forget that the tablet offers 1.5GB of RAM, which isn't bad either.

In general, the price will decide everything. Simply because Samsung usually has a problem with this - the company likes to charge inadequate prices to relatively weak devices. No matter how it turned out this time.

Galaxy Tab E Price

It was impossible to buy the Galaxy Tab E in May 2015, when the review was being prepared. The tablet was not even announced! So it's difficult to ask the price. But in any case, this product simply will not work if the cost is above 15 thousand rubles.

Numerous offers from B-brands can compete with the considered device. For example, Digma Platina 9.7 3G. This can be purchased somewhere for 10-11 thousand. At the same time, it can boast of an "iPad screen" - a 9.7-inch matrix with a resolution of 2048x1536. There will also be 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of RAM, 8-core processor MediaTek MT8392, Android 4.4 and a weak 2-megapixel main camera.

Another potential competitor is the 9-inch bb-mobile Techno 9.0 3G TM959D tablet. It costs about 12 thousand and offers a screen with a resolution of 1920x1200. It has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Questions can only arise in relation to the 4-core RockChip RK3188 processor.

Pros:

  • high build quality;
  • interesting back cover coating;
  • relatively good IPS-screen;
  • good camera for a tablet;
  • the ability to install the full version of the Hancom Office suite;
  • 1.5 GB of RAM.

Minuses:

  • low screen resolution;
  • Android 4.4;
  • camera without flash;
  • low productivity;
  • the volume and power buttons are too close to each other.

Positioning

In the past, Samsung's success was based on selling not only and not so much flagships, but ordinary models of the middle segment, as well as high-quality budget devices that were distinguished by a good price / quality ratio. Over the past few years, I had the feeling that Samsung simply forgot how to create inexpensive and high-quality devices, the markup for the brand was always so high that it made the purchase of budget devices not very justified. On the market, you could find many models with similar or even better characteristics, but at more gentle prices.

On the tablet market in the world, and as a result, in Russia, there is no big competition in the middle price segment. Operators offer very cheap 7-8-inch tablets; they do not risk playing with 10-inch models. Therefore, the offer of such devices is very limited, in Russia only Samsung has a large lineup, from which you can choose a model for every taste, but the Galaxy Tab E at the same time offers, perhaps, the best price / quality ratio, if you just close your eyes to the old version of Android - 4.4.4, which, moreover, will not be updated to five. It is important to decide for yourself a simple thing - is it so vital for you to get an A, and if so, then you can look at the models that cost a little more.

At the moment, there is only the SM-T561 model on the market in Russia, it has a 3G module. There is no simple Wi-Fi version, it is possible that it will appear later. This model should be considered as a budget version of a 10-inch tablet with versatility and quality performance, a workhorse for different use scenarios.

Design, dimensions, controls

The stylistics of this tablet is kept in a key typical for last year's models from Samsung, with one amendment - then they were not a budget proposal. Hence the perception of the design as not too simple - the body is white or black, the ribbed surface on the back, hands do not crawl even when wet, but the body cannot be scratched either. Scratches on it are simply not visible, they are lost in the proprietary mesh.

The controls were arranged as usual. There is a button under the screen, touch keys on the sides. They are located closely to the central button. Considering that the device is narrow, when working in landscape orientation you constantly touch the touch keys or, on the contrary, miss. From the point of view of ergonomics, this is the biggest gripe for the model, you have to get used to how close the keys are.

Above the screen is the front camera, the back is the main one. The case is non-separable, a microUSB connector is brought out to the top end, there is also a 3.5 mm headphone jack. At the bottom there is only a microphone. A microSIM is hidden behind the covers on the left side, along with a memory card. On the right side there is a power button and a volume rocker.

Tablet dimensions - 242x149.5x8.5 mm, weight - 495 grams. Quite typical characteristics for such models do not differ from other devices. The tablet is acceptable in the hand, it raises no particular complaints. The build quality is excellent, and there is no digging into it.

Display

A budget matrix with a diagonal of 9.6 inches (TFT), 1280x800 pixels, geometry - 16:10, 157 dots per inch. The picture quality is typical for devices in this price segment, don't expect very bright and vivid colors, the screen is a little whitish, which is easy to explain - it is inexpensive. automatic brightness control is not provided, only in manual mode - it's a pity, but you expect to see this possibility. You can increase the legibility of the text to help you read. But on the other hand, there are no special settings. Comparing the screen to the budget Galaxy Tab A, I should note that they are similar, but the Tab E's screen is still a little worse. The difference is not fundamental, but visible to the naked eye.

I note that all models of other companies have screens similar to this, this is a tribute to the price.

Chipset, memory, performance

Spreadtrum SC8830 chipset, 4 cores, 1.3 GHz. I have a prejudice against Spreadtrum, there were often budget models with very low performance. But this tablet turned out to be fast enough for its class, the interface works well, there are no lags or brakes. In short, in this aspect it will not disappoint.

RAM 1.5 GB. The hardware component is not very interesting, however, look at the results of synthetic tests for yourself.

Built-in memory 8 GB, less than half available.

You can install memory cards up to 128 GB, which is not bad.

Battery

The tablet has a 5000 mAh Li-Ion battery. It is curious that the video playback time is declared for it at the level of 7 hours (it played a little over 7 hours in practice).

Overall, the tablet can be expected to perform well for several days with around 1.5 hours of use per day. This is the typical runtime for such devices. The full charging time of the battery is about 3.5 hours.

Camera

The main camera is 5 megapixel, the picture quality is typical for tablets, that is, none. You cannot consider the camera as something serious, however, see for yourself.

Communication capabilities

The tablet lacks MHL support and the version is USB 2.0. BT version 4.0. For the version with a SIM-card, 3G is supported, there are no problems with working on Russian networks.

Software features

Inside there is the usual Android 4.4.4, you should not wait for an update to 5. This is a typical representative of the previous generation tablets, there is a division of the screen into areas, work in several windows, in the video I show this possibility. In new tablets, this option was removed or implemented differently.

In the "Gifts" section you can find free applications and subscriptions to various services. The gifts themselves are few and far between.

The 3G version of the tablet will also have a dialer plus an SMS app. This tablet can act as a big phone, you can talk on it even without a headset.

I don't see any point in dwelling on typical Android functions, they are described in a separate article.

Impression

It so happens that the device is immediately liked, although, at first glance, it does not offer anything special. Surprisingly, I simultaneously had the Galaxy Tab E and Tab A tablets on the test, I didn't like the latter, but I liked the Tab E right away. To me this device seems to be optimal in terms of price / quality ratio for a 10-inch tablet. With a price of 13 thousand rubles, it has almost no competitors. You can remember a tablet like the Tab 4 10.1 ", it has more memory - 16 GB, but other characteristics are the same or slightly worse. And the price is higher, it makes no sense to consider it, this is an outgoing model. Although the workmanship of the 4 is better, it was initially positioned as a higher-end tablet.

As a competitor, the Asus Transformer Pad TF103CG model is interesting, it also has 8 GB of memory on board, Android 4.4 and other characteristics are the same, but this is an outgoing model. The price is exactly the same - 13,000 rubles.

You can also remember the Lenovo A7600 tablet, which is somewhat inferior and somewhat superior to the model in question.

As for me, if you need an inexpensive 10-inch tablet with 3G, then you should pay attention to the Tab E, keeping in mind that you will not receive any updates. The price does its job, especially in the absence of competitors from small manufacturers. At the moment in Russia Tab E has excellent sales in its class, it is number one.
