This mobile number is already in use by uber. Is there a practical way to change the phone number on the Uber app when you arrive in the country

Hello everyone who uses the UBER service! Today I would like to tell a story about how mine was, and I tried to restore it for a long time and eventually restored it. The story began quite simply - I checked my mail and among a dozen letters I found a letter from UBER, which said that some of my data account were changed, and in particular the e-mail and password ... To say that I was surprised - to say nothing! The letter came to me at 3 o'clock in the morning, and at that time I was fast asleep and could not change my account data in any way. After the first wave of indignation, I decided to deal with the situation in more detail. So the story begins!

Naturally, the first thing I did was go to the site to try to log into my account. Naturally, according to my login / password, the system did not let me in, which is quite logical. I decided to try my luck by clicking on the "forgot password" button. If after this action I could restore access, this story would not exist, as many might have guessed 😉 It was very naive for me to wait for a letter with a link to restore access to the mail, because not only the password, but also the address itself was changed Email! And what to do in this case? What would you do if you had a similar situation? It is logical that the company has a website that has a list of possible contacts through which you can contact support and regain access to your account. And, as it turned out, UBER also has a technical support page, but the only way to contact real people was mail ...

Let me leave a little digression. At first, I didn't even want to bother restoring my account, thinking that it could be done on any other day, because there were already a lot of things to do. However, one thought leaked from the depths of the brain - "BANK CARD IS LINKED TO UBER ACCOUNT"! I quickly go to the Internet bank and find there 3 deductions from the card per night. More precisely, not write-offs, but attempts to write off funds ... We tried to write off 3.5 pounds (those that are very popular in Britain), and translated into ours it turns out to be 390 rubles (at that time, they gave 112 rubles for 1 pound). I had 325 rubles on my account. Break off, scammers! The only thing that saved me was that the amount was just a little short!

We return to the letters. I wrote a letter, where I described in detail all my actions, threw off screenshots from the Internet bank and attached a morning letter with a change in data. Note that I wrote in [email protected] and at that moment I didn't have any thoughts that I should write in non-Russian. The company is international, they work all over the world and it is this mail that is indicated on the Russian-language site! A little later, I decided to write a post in, where I marked #uber and, in the hope that the company will respond faster through the social network. Do not think that I am a completely insolent guy who wants to solve his problems with a simple hashtag or mention! The same and very responsive to such communication methods, unlike UBER, as I found out. By the way, I never got a response to my post from taxi drivers, although I later received a response on Facebook, but on a different request.

While I was writing in social networks letters and thought about the card, the electricity was cut off at my house and I had to leave for the city. I stopped by my friends in, talked about life and, of course, I mentioned my problem. In the office, my friends were calm and I, lounging on the sofa, opened my laptop hoping to see at least some answer from UBER. I have never examined the Spam folder so thoroughly 🙂 Alas, there was nothing from the taxi drivers there either. Desperate that it would not be possible to solve the problem quickly (about 2 hours had already passed after writing the letter), I decided to play it safe and CALLED THE BANK... I strongly recommend that in such cases contact your bank and ask them about further actions with the card! As always, I am grateful to the technical support of Tinkoff Bank and personally to Ilya, who listened to me carefully and suggested several ways to solve my problem. Here they are:

  • block the card,
  • reduce the payment threshold to "0",
  • disable purchases "without the presence of a card" (it seems that it is called so), that is, disable online purchases.

I chose the last item, since I was still going to use the card and the rest of the options did not suit me in terms of the speed of the reverse renewal. The card could only be unblocked after repeated contact for a few hours, or it might not have been unblocked at all ... As a result, I could use the card in the store, top up the balance, but there was no way to buy something via the Internet - what I needed in this situation!

After communicating with the bank, I decided to try my luck on the Internet again and look for some other ways to contact the bank. And then I accidentally stumbled upon the UBER page in Vkontakte, where on top I found the attached topic "Support Center", in which there was little information. Well, very little. BUT VERY USEFUL!

At first, I did not pay attention to the mail address that was indicated: it was by the evening, my eyes were already "blurred", but, taking a closer look, I saw what I was looking for - [email protected] ! Yes, yes, it was the mail of the Moscow technical support. Without thinking twice, I forwarded my first original letter in the hopes of getting a slightly faster response. In addition, out of anger, I wrote an angry and kind post on the UBER page saying that "they were all stunned there?" After 5 minutes I see a call from +7 495 120 17 16 (I leave it just in case, although when he calls him the man says that “you got to UBER” and offers to write a letter to the mailbox [email protected]). In anticipation of the denouement, I pick up the phone and a madam named Elena introduces herself to me as an employee of TP UBER. My joy knew no bounds - at last I heard the voice of a living employee! The girl told me that she had just seen my appeal by mail and promised to solve my problem as soon as possible. A couple of minutes later, I received a response from the UBER page, to my angry-kind post. "The manager will contact you, if the money was stolen, we will return it." No hello, no goodbye, no apologies for the inconvenience!

The time was already late and my friends' office was already closing - I went to the coffee shop to check the card's functionality, and at the same time wait for answers from Elena. Within 30 minutes I waited for a letter from Elena, where she apologized for the inconvenience, said that the security system of UBER, well, just the highest class and the reason for the hack could be “the current situation when the account was in the hands of intruders was not due to imperfection of the security scheme, and, most likely, due to leaks of login-password combinations from other sites". Not that I was surprised by such an answer, but I was on my guard and very much! Even in the afternoon, when I was just writing the first letter to the TP, I looked through all my accounts in parallel: mail, social networks and services, making sure that everything was working properly and everything was set correctly in the security settings and without obvious holes! So I won't find out about the real reason ... There was also an instruction on how to restore my account in the letter: send a scan of your passport and name 4 last digits from the linked card... After I sent all the data to Elena's mail, I received an email with a link to access my account, a temporary password and a wish of all the best. We can assume that the problem has been resolved and I have gained access to my UBER account! U-f-f-f ...

Summary and thoughts on safety

Friends, I always say that you need to protect your data from iCloud mail, Mail, Gmail etc. In addition to a simple login-password link, it is extremely important to connect, bind your phone number or ! What conclusions can I draw from what happened:

  • be calm, don't panic and believe that everything will be fine!
  • always use strong passwords and do not use the same password for the most important services, especially for mail and social networks!
  • as quickly as possible contact technical support a service that has been hacked, do not postpone for later and do not dismiss the problem!
  • to pay for purchases via the Internet try use a separate card, moreover, you can also virtual with a small limit.
  • in case of problems one way or another related to the cards, contact your bank: sometimes you can find a compromise solution, as in my case.
  • make sure that other services have not been hacked and they are still yours (if the mail was also hacked, then first you need to return access to it);

Friends, please take a walk a closer look at their accounts to mail and social networks... Make sure you have backup addresses for recovery connected and your phone number connected everywhere! Run through all, even insignificant services, because after gaining access to Instagram, for example, an attacker will want to use your username / password on other services, and if the passwords are the same everywhere, then this may end in trouble.

And finally, what do I think about UBER itself? I like the service and I will continue to use it, but with an eye to my sad experience. I really don't understand the situation when, having several tools for entering the service at once (email address, password and phone number), the true owner cannot quickly restore access to the service ?! Why is there no local office mail address on the Russian-language site, but only a foreign one? Why on official page Facebook lacks adequate user support and local mail? Why is there no way to make a phone call and speed up the solution of the problem? For all these "why" I can not find the answer ...

P.S. Special thanks to Tinkoff Bank for the wonderful technical support, as well as Konstantin Kim for correcting this text!

How to delete your UBER account

The dust has settled, the account has been restored, but so far I do not risk using UBER again. I already thought about deleting my UBER account, but the solution was not found right away, and then only on some German site!

Why I decided to delete my UBER account: I would leave this account alone and use it when needed, only there is one BUT - you cannot untie bank card! And on this moment all the cards that I use contain money on them and to untie one money card and tie another is nonsense! Therefore, you cannot do without deleting your account.

First you need to go to the site and rewind to the very bottom of the page, where in the Profile section you need to click on the "More >>" button and at the very bottom click on the "I would like to delete my account" button:

After that, a new window will open asking you to log into your account if you have not yet passed the authentication procedure on the site. Enter your login information and click the "Login" button. If you have already logged into your account earlier, then a window will immediately open to confirm the deletion of the account, where you can leave any comments and click on the "Submit" button:

If everything is done correctly, then after some time you should receive a notification in your mail about the deletion of your account. Nothing came to me in 2 days ... Super bad support from UBER 🙁

And I was also pleased with the phrase "There is no risk in maintaining an account ..." Yeah, there is None! 🙂

UPD. Finally, an answer came from UBER, and as you might have guessed, it's in English. Not that I don't understand English, just requests to the Russian-speaking UBER support could be redirected to "more local" offices ...

You have formed and have a question about service or assistance for Uber, then you need to contact Uber technical support. If this is your first time encountering this, you will be somewhat upset about what kind of support is offered by the reverse service. For those who do not know, we remind you that the company does not have direct contacts through which you can call them with a complaint or other question.

For this, the so-called alternative paths exit. This refers to online chat support, to which employees give an answer as soon as possible. It is also possible to use e-mail, however, it is extremely ineffective for urgent matters. It is also possible to contact using the application. Perhaps this is the most simple and interesting way... All that is required of you is to go to the help section, in which you can find the corresponding menus, where your problems will be listed. Typically, support is provided within a few minutes, depending on the complexity.

How to contact Uber support?

The tech support of the uber service provides several communication options with it, by the way, which we have listed above. These are the three main types of calls that are possible through e-mail, online chat or software. Surely there are numbers hotline however, in most cases, they are designed to solve partner problems. And the requests related to the quality of service are initially dealt with by the indicated sources.

For clarity, let's take a closer look at how you can contact support from the program. So, initially, what you need is to open the program. You will find there the tab technical support Uber help, study all the sections and select the one that most accurately describes the essence of your question. If the section did not find an answer to a specific request related to your situation, Uber allows you to ask your question online.

By the way, if the problem is of a specific nature, it concerns a certain trip, then you'd better turn to the trip section. In a particular situation, you can ask a question in the same way. By the way, not for every section such a tab has been created, so if you still did not find a full explanation in the menu of interest, there is no tab to ask a request, just go to another menu and ask a question of interest.

Is there a practical way to change my phone number on the Uber app when I arrive in the country?

I use the Uber app extensively to get taxis mostly in any country where Uber is available, and sometimes I get a local sim card.

I always have roaming turned on, but the problem is receiving calls, I do not want the drivers to call me, and this will be considered an international call, some may cancel because of this.

I played around with the app and tried to edit my account information, it redirects me to the website and it is greyed out on the website, I cannot change the phone number and the note says to contact customer service. Seems not easy way change your phone number. I tried on another Uber account and the same result.

Is there a more practical and easier way to change my phone number when I arrive in a new country and get a local sim and then return it after leaving without contacting customer service?

Berwyn

Uber drivers don't see your phone number, nor do they know if it's an international number or not. They are proxied through the Uber server and see a temporary number to call you. Knowing that you still need to know how to change the number?

Nean de thal

@berwyn this is impressive! If you have a source what then would make a fantastic answer. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I got calls from the drivers while roaming and he showed their number .. So I guess they called me directly.

phuclv

I have had this problem once in India. This time, I have to call the driver directly from the local SIM. But I forgot if I used Uber or Olacabs or some similar service

It is worth noting that Uber is generally evil, their business model is based on the destruction of the rule of law, and in the United States, they are constantly working on rebuilding slavery. Do your research and think again about what companies you support with your money.

I had this problem: I was able to find my phone number in the settings page, but it was not available and I was unable to change it. I switched from a US number to a new international number.

This is how I was able to change the number for my account:

  1. Go to settings
  2. Click "Sign Out"
  3. Enter new phone number
  4. Get a confirmation code
  5. Enter the verification code into the Uber app
  6. Enter your email address and password for your old account

My phone number for my existing account has been updated to a new number.

Excellent! This is the only solution that worked for me!

Berwyn

This solves your problem with disclosing your phone number:

Contact without providing personal information. While riders and drivers can communicate with each other through the app, they don't actually see each other's real phone numbers. Uber uses technology that makes phone numbers drivers and drivers anonymous so that they do not have each other's contact details in the future.

Consequently, if you are abroad, drivers usually don't see the international number, but just the local number that Uber redirects internationally.

If you still want to change your phone number, you can probably do so in the app itself under Settings -> Change Account.

To change your phone number:

  1. For iOS users, go to SETTINGS and tap CHANGE ACCOUNT under your name. For Android users, go to SETTINGS, click on the 3 vertical dots in the upper right corner and select EDIT ACCOUNT.
  2. Enter your account password and click "SUBMIT".
  3. Enter new number mobile phone.
  4. Uber will send a text message with a verification code to this number. If you haven't received the SMS within a few minutes, tap Forward.
  5. Enter the verification code and tap SEND.

If that fails, then the only way out is to contact Uber:

Settings -> Edit Account is not working, which is what made me ask this question in the first place.

Berwyn

@JonathanReez This is interesting. Can't track the list of countries

Akasha

Number masking is controversial. I use Uber almost daily in India and about 50% of the time the driver has access to my actual number.

Nitish

@Akash: I am from India and use Uber daily. I asked one driver what he calls the drivers. He said he did not call the riders directly. He just calls the "company" number.

R..

A more general solution to this and related problems: get a VoIP number for which you can set up forwarding, and before departure (or even after arrival, but before switching SIM cards) set up your country's cell number to forward to your VoIP number, and route your VoIP number to your local number in the country you are going to travel. Thus, anyone can contact you at your regular number. Of course, you pay for shipping, but for most countries, rates are very cheap, on the order of $ 0.015-0.030 per minute.

JonathanReez ♦

The problem is that taxi drivers are more likely to be reluctant to call your foreign number in countries where Uber does not hide your real phone number.

JonathanReez

You can change your phone number from the app. Open the Settings menu item, click the three dots in the upper right corner and click Edit Account:

Enter your password and you can change your phone number as well as your name. I just tried it and it works.

Nean de thal

Strange, it didn't work for me! There must be something wrong with my account.

JonathanReez ♦

@HeidelBerGensis is your app up to date? Otherwise it may be a regional limitation, I would like to try to contact support.

Nean de thal

This is relevant. I'll try it for sure now .. Since the app is capable of this, there must be something wrong with my account.

Berwyn

This doesn't work for me either. I tried to exchange my phone number with one of several other numbers I have

JonathanReez ♦

@Berwyn I'm on Android. Maybe it doesn't work on iOS?

and sometimes i get a local sim card

I had a lot of problems with this for different services while traveling and now I am doing the following. I have created a number of Skype, which is of course linked to my Skype account.

Then use this number for all / most services. You don't need a physical SIM card to do anything, so if you are abroad and lose it then no problem. You just need an internet connection and everything works.

I still test it across all apps and services, but Uber is perfect. I cannot receive SMS officially, but when I call the UK number, they call me (via Skype) and translate text to speech.

Edit: tried linking my Uber app but this gives unknown error... I contacted Uber and is waiting for a response.

Edit 2: just tried again and this is related with no problem

user568458

Please note that Skype numbers terrible unreliable in mobile applications especially on Android. Many times, even if you have a perfect data connection, when you call your Skype number, nothing happens in the app and you will never be notified that someone even tried to call. Sometimes this happens even when the caller hears the call, so they will think you are ignoring them. Hundreds of complaints about this on the Skype forums.

user568458

If Uber does not accept a Skype number, it may be because it looks like a landline number, so it may not be able to receive text messages (Uber uses them to verify numbers).

Francisco Present

@ user568458 I have no idea, then I'll check and try to find The best decision thanks for the hint

Aparna

Try this. Go to Account Edit, scroll down at the bottom - you will see a sign from the option. Exit using this option. Then log back in by creating a new account (you will be entering a new phone number). Then, when the app asks for an email id, enter the old email id you used earlier. Uber recognizes this email id and ask you to verify it using ur password. After verification, everything is ready - Uber will update your account information, the application will use your new number
