In general, we will not talk now about the reasons, but about the effect, that is, about how to change the ringtone on Android.
There are several ways to accomplish this procedure. Android has its own built-in tools that you can use in this case, or you can resort to the capabilities of numerous applications.
In fact, this task is not at all difficult, and the process itself is similar for almost all versions and models of devices.
Using the capabilities of the system
First, you need to open the main settings of your gadget and go to the "Sound Profiles" section (on some devices, "Sound Settings").
We find the line "General", click the gear opposite to it, after which we will get to the profile settings. After that, the following settings will become available to us: volume, vibration, notification sounds, etc.
To select a melody that we will install for incoming calls, you need to get into the multimedia storage, for this we tap on the "Voice call ringtone" field:

We recommend that, in terms of functionality, it is significantly superior to the regular conductor. If you now open the "Sound Profiles", and then click on the line "Ringtone of a voice call", then on the choice offered by the system, click "ES Explorer", which does not play, but activates the file that you will see on the display. After the desired file is selected, it is registered as a ringtone or notification sound in the list of preset ringtones:
Using the file manager
Another way to add selected media files to the list of default melodies. And here you can use both the installed and the standard file manager. What to do:

As you can see in the next screenshot, the built-in address book of a smartphone (tablet) has a special sub-item that allows us to choose one or another melody. In the case described in the manual, this item is called “Default melody”.
Having selected this line of settings, we will be taken to a pop-up menu, which will allow us not only to listen to the entire available “mobile repertoire” of the gadget, but also to determine what composition should sound when an incoming call from a specific subscriber.
But! As tempting as it is, approach the choice of a melody for your bosses and relatives with the utmost care. Who knows, maybe a popular, but such an offensive ringtone, although not on purpose, will deprive you of another prize))
3. Setting a ringtone for a group of subscribers
Having mastered the algorithm for changing the call melody for one subscriber, you can safely proceed to such a setting for subscriber groups. Moreover, this is done very, very simply. Open the address book of the mobile device and go to the “Groups” tab.
Using the context menu, select the sub-item “Change group settings” or “Group settings”.
In the next step, go to the “Default Ringtone” item or a menu bar with a similar name.

All these methods are divided into 2 groups:
- using standard applications of the operating system - such as an alarm clock or settings;
- using advanced methods - through the distribution of the desired music to certain folders on the memory card, or using root access.
The first and, perhaps, the easiest way to change the call on a smartphone is to do it using the built-in music player. To do this, you need to go to the main menu and open the "Music" or "Player" tab. On different phones, this program may have different names, but it must be present in any case.
Find the desired song in the list of audio recordings that you would like to play and hold it down. A window will appear in which you will need to select the "Call" item or something like that. Perhaps this item will be hidden under three dots, the "More" or "Advanced" button.
Installing a ringtone using the file manager
Open the menu and find there an icon labeled "File Manager". Next, we follow the path that the composition is in. Either phone memory or SD card - it all depends on where you store your music files. Next, we look for the Music directory and open it. Find the desired track and click until automatic selection is applied. Then open the context menu and click "Use as a signal".
We put the desired composition through the standard settings
Using the menu, go to the settings. Next - on the sound tab. But then the fun begins. There is a call change function in the sound settings, that's for sure - but that's where it is, you have to figure it out. It may be called "Vibrate and Ringtone" or "Phone Ringtones" or something else. Click on the "Call" item and change the melodies, indicating the desired song in the file manager.
Unfortunately, even now there are still such phone models that allow you to set only standard melodies as a call. There is a solution to this problem thanks to the special application Rings Extended. The application is free, you can download it from the Android market. When installed, it is added to the system. Going into the settings and selecting "Phone signal", the button "Rings Extended" will appear. When you click on it, you can put any song or audio file as a ringtone.
Using a more advanced method to set the melody
If the previous methods didn't work, let's try a more advanced method. To do this, you need to go to the memory card on the device through the file manager and create several folders there. The first folder we'll create will be called media. Then, in the media directory, create an audio folder.
Going into this folder, we will find ourselves in the sdcard / media / audio directory. Inside, we create four directories: alarms, notifications, ringtones, ui. Please note that directories are created without periods and spaces, with a lowercase letter. Thus, we get:
- sdcard / media / audio / alarms - signals for an alarm clock;
- sdcard / media / audio / notifications - signals for notifications and SMS;
- sdcard / media / audio / ringtones - ringtones for the phone;
- sdcard / media / audio / ui - interface sounds.
Now, to set the desired ringtone, alarm, interface or SMS, you just need to put the desired melody in the appropriate directory. You do not need to create all 4 folders, if, for example, you want to change only the standard signal - just create the path sdcard / media / audio / ringtones and put the desired song in the ringtones directory. After completing all operations, restart the device, and try to place a call through the phone settings - you will see that the audio recordings you have moved have been added to the range of standard ringtones.
If you have root rights, then you can do even easier: copy the desired tunes to the appropriate directories at system / media / audio.
How to set a ringtone from a specific contact
To do this, we need to go to the phone book of the smartphone. Then select the desired contact and open the additional settings window. After that select "Set melody". And then select the desired signal and save the settings.
This method works only if the contact is saved in the internal memory of the smartphone, and not on the SIM card. Otherwise, putting a ringtone on a certain person will not work.
