A modern personal computer cannot be imagined without a network card - a device that connects this computer with other computers on the network. Such a network card (also called a "network controller") operates on the basis of an appropriate driver that serves the operation of the specified device at the software level. The obsolescence of this driver, failures and dysfunctions in its operation lead to a violation of the stability of the network connection, or even a complete loss of access to the network for this PC. Below I will analyze what a network controller for Windows is, as well as where to download it on Windows 7 64 bit.

Features of the network controller driver for Windows

Network controller driver (in the English version "Ethernet Controller driver") designed to provide sending and receiving data between the controller and the host device. Typically, this is low-level software that receives a request from a host (computer) to send and receive data, and converts this request into a form that the network controller can understand. Then this driver for Windows 7 receives a response from the controller and translates it into a form recognized by the host (in essence, resembling an interactive bridge). Without these drivers, the Ethernet controller is completely useless, since it cannot communicate with the host device. The network controller driver provides data buffering, adjusts the data transfer rate, and corrects errors that occur during the operation of a network device.

If there are problems with the Ethernet driver in Device Manager, next to the network card or ethernet controller, you will see an exclamation mark (often the problem controller in Windows 7 is displayed in the "Other devices" section). The appearance of this sign indicates the need to update the driver and correct the dysfunction that has arisen.

Where to download the Ethernet controller driver for Windows 7 64 bit?

There are several ways to download the driver for the Windows 7 64 bit Ethernet controller to your PC. Let's consider them in order:

Use the manufacturer's website

If you are using a branded computer, then you need to go to the website of the manufacturer of this PC (Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, etc.), and look there for the latest drivers for your network card. To find the most current versions, you need to know the model of your PC and the specifics of the operating system (what version of Windows you have and what bit it is). In particular, such information can be obtained by pressing the Win + Pause button combination.

If you are using a self-assembled computer (or bought in stores like "Eldorado"), you need to log into the website of the motherboard manufacturer of your PC (Asus, Acer, Intel, Gigabyte, etc.), and look there for drivers for your network controller. To find the correct driver, you need to know the model of your motherboard, information on which can be found on the motherboard itself. You also need to identify your Windows OS (version and bit depth)

If your PC does not have an Internet connection due to problems with the network card, it is recommended to download the mentioned drivers on another PC, and then transfer them to our computer using a USB flash drive or other forms of media. After installing the drivers, network problems are usually resolved.

You can also use the list of drivers for network controllers at getdrivers.net.

Use specialized software

An alternative solution to the problem in Windows 7 64 bit is to use specialized software for automatic installation of drivers of the level "DriverPack Solution", "Driver Booster" and other analogs. These software products will scan your computer for missing or outdated drivers and install their latest versions.

Use the "Driver Booster" features

Search by ID

If the first two methods turned out to be ineffective, it is recommended to look for the driver for the network controller by its ID.

  1. To do this, start the "Device Manager", find our "Network Controller" (Ethernet controller) there.
  2. Hover over it, right-click, and select "Properties".
  3. Then go to "Details", and here in the "Property" option select "Equipment ID".
  4. Several values will be displayed below, you need to copy the longest of them, and search through any available search engine for the appropriate drivers, which will remain to be downloaded and installed on your PC.

Conclusion

The most optimal way to download the network controller driver for Windows 7 64 bit and other operating systems is to contact the device manufacturer's website, where you can download the most current version of the specified software. A good alternative is also to turn to the functionality of specialized automated programs that allow you to restore the normal operation of the network controller on your PC.

On this page we will deal with the driver for the network card of a stationary computer or laptop. In the title, I also wrote an Ethernet controller - this is a network adapter. It's just that in the device manager, as a rule, the network carat is displayed as an unknown device with the name "Ethernet controller". This is when the driver is not installed on it. I will try to explain in detail how to determine the status of a network card. (it works, no, is it necessary to install the driver), then I will show you how to determine which driver is needed for the Ethernet controller specifically in your case, and where to download it.

I don't often write articles specifically on solving problems with LAN adapters, for the reason that there are practically no problems with these adapters. They often burn, and that's all. As far as drivers are concerned, Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7 almost always automatically install drivers on the network card. The same cannot be said about the wireless Wi-Fi adapter. But today is not about him.

The Ethernet controller itself is almost always integrated into a laptop or desktop computer motherboard. Perhaps your system unit already has a discrete network card connected to the PCI slot. And there may be another USB adapter, something like this, but this is rare. For clarity, let's see the picture:

It doesn't matter which Ethernet controller you have. In any case, for it to work, a driver must be installed on it. This can be checked in Device Manager.

Checking the network card in device manager

We go to the device manager, and see what's what. If you do not know how to enter the device manager, then press the key combination Win + R, copy the command to the window devmgmt.msc, and click Ok. Or right-click on "My Computer" - "Properties", and there "Device Manager".

Open the tab immediately "Network adapters"... If everything is fine with the network card, then there should be an adapter in the name of which you will see the words "LAN", "Ethernet adapter", "PCI ...", "Family Controller", etc. I have an ASUS laptop, and adapter "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller".

If you do not see the network card there, then there must be an unknown device (with yellow exclamation mark)... Most likely, it will be called "Ethernet Controller". This is our network card, which does not work due to the lack of a driver. Windows without a driver simply does not know what kind of device it is and how to "communicate" with it.

We just need to install the driver on the network card. Or reinstall it if there is an adapter, but it works with errors, or does not work at all.

What driver to download for the network card (Ethernet controller)?

We found out that we need to download and install the driver for the Ethernet controller. You probably immediately wondered what driver you need and where you can download it. Let's figure it out now.

The most correct way is to look for a driver for your laptop model, motherboard, or the network card itself.

I understand that the Internet is most likely not working for you. If you had a driver disc with the adapter itself, a laptop, or a motherboard (if you have a PC), then you can try to install the driver from the disc.

If there is no disk, you will have to look for and download the driver from another computer, or even a mobile device. Then transfer it to the desired computer and install.

If you have a laptop with a built-in network adapter

Everything is very simple here. First, we need to find out the laptop model. It is clearly indicated on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. Next, we type the laptop model into Google, and go to the official website. Or, we go to the official website of the manufacturer of your laptop, and through the search on the site we find the page of the model of your laptop. There we are already looking for the "Drivers", "Support" tab, etc., and load the LAN Driver. Required for Windows you have installed.

Depending on the manufacturer of your laptop, the process itself will be different. Therefore, I cannot give specific instructions. But the procedure will be the same. Since on the website of each manufacturer, there is a page for a specific laptop model, where you can download all the drivers.

I described this process in more detail in the article. In this case, everything is exactly the same, only in the end we download the driver not to Wi-Fi, but to a network card. Although, you will most likely have to download and install the driver for the Wi-Fi adapter.

Finding a LAN driver for a desktop computer

If you have a stationary computer on which the network carat is built into the motherboard, then you need to look for the driver on the motherboard manufacturer's website for your motherboard model. You probably have a question about how to find out the model of the motherboard. There are many programs like AIDA64, or CPU-Z. But it can be done the same way through the command line.

Open a command prompt and run the commands one by one:

wmic baseboard get Manufacturer

wmic baseboard get product

Only the last one is possible. After completing it, you will see the motherboard model.

Then we search on the Internet for the motherboard model, go to the developer's website, in my case it is MSI, and download the LAN driver. Just remember to choose your operating system. There will definitely be such an opportunity.

If you have a PCI or USB network card

In this case, first check if there was a driver disc included with the card itself.

If not, then you need to find out the model of the network adapter, and download the driver from the official website. The model can usually be viewed on the device itself.

Search for Ethernet controller driver by VEN and DEV

This is an emergency case. There is one good site that has helped me out more than once. With its help, you can find a driver for almost any unknown device.

First, go to the device manager, right-click on our Ethernet controller (or an unknown device that you think might be a network adapter), and select "Properties".

In the new window, go to the "Details" tab. In the drop-down menu, select "Equipment ID". Copy the last line (if it doesn't work, you can try others).

Go to the site http://devid.info. In the search bar, paste the copied line from the device manager. And click "Search".

Download the first driver from the list. Please note that the system for which it is suitable will be indicated next to the driver. You need a driver for the Windows operating system you have installed. There, from above, you can select the desired system and the capacity of the system. For example, Windows 10.

And on another page:

Download the driver file to your computer. Now we will install it.

Installing the driver on a network card in Windows 10, 8, 7

So, we already have the driver. As practice shows, to install, you just need to open the downloaded archive, run the setup.exe file, and follow the installation instructions.

If an error appears during the driver installation, restart your computer and try to run the installation again. If, nevertheless, the driver does not want to be installed, then try downloading another one. But there shouldn't be any problems.

We update the driver manually (if there is no setup.exe file)

You can try another installation method. First, extract all files from the driver archive. Can be on the desktop.

Then we go to the device manager, and right-click on the network card. More precisely on an unknown device (or Ethernet controller) which you think is the network adapter and choose "Update Drivers".

In the new window, select "Search for drivers on this computer."

The system must find and install the driver itself. If you specified the folder with the correct drivers.

If something didn't work out during the installation process, write in the comments. Describe the problem in detail, and I will try to help you.

After you upgrade your computer to Windows 10, if your MSI Network / Ethernet Drivers are not working, you can fix the problem by updating the drivers. It is possible that your Network / Ethernet driver is not compatible with the newer version of Windows.
