Review: the meizu m3s mini is too cool for its price. Meizu M3 S Specifications Information on other important connection technologies supported by the device

Among the manufacturers of mobile technology, companies from China stand out, which managed to become incredibly popular just a couple of years after their appearance. Such phenomena include the brands Xiaomi and Meizu. Five years ago, no one knew anything about them. And now they are among the five most famous smartphone manufacturers. The most promising brand at the moment is Meizu. Its smartphones boggle the imagination with unrivaled performance and low prices. Our today's hero, the Meizu M3 Mini smartphone, belongs to the category of mid-price devices. This device looks very interesting against the background of its competitors. But we will talk about its technical characteristics a little later.

A little about the company

What kind of company is this - Meizu? Where did it come from? The history of this company began in 2003. A certain Jack Wong did not find a suitable MP3 player on the market and decided to develop it on his own. It so happened that the company produced MP3 players until 2008. Without further ado, engineers simply copied well-known models and made minor changes to them. This continued until 2008. And then Wong decided it was time to get down to business in earnest. The first smartphone from Meizu ran on the Windows CE platform and was almost no different in design from the fourth iPhone. Then Apple made sure that over-zealous copiers stopped their antics. The release of the smartphone was canceled, but the idea did not die. We have just decided to release Android-based devices with minimal common features with the products of well-known brands. These devices include and which we will analyze later.

The company's first Android device was the M9, which revolutionized China. For the most part, the tremendous success of the Nine was due to its extremely low price. The manufacturer produced a flagship per year. Company executives considered it inappropriate to "spray" on mid-range models and budget smartphones. This continued until 2014. However, the company began to sharply lose its positions even in China. The management had to reconsider their views. The result was that the company focused on budget devices as well. However, most of all the people liked the models of the middle price segment. The Meizu M3 Mini smartphone has become a striking representative of gadgets in this category. Now let's take a closer look at this miracle of Chinese engineering.

Appearance and design

Of course, there are many borrowings in the appearance of the M3, but there are also specific features that make the device unique. The main feature of this device is that it is enclosed in a completely metal case. The base material is 7000 series sandblasted aluminum. The presence of such a case brings the device closer to the flagships. The front panel is covered with a convex tempered glass (though from an unknown manufacturer) 2.5D. This allows the gadget to look modern. As it should be, most of the front panel is occupied by the screen. Under it is a mechanical Home button with a touch-sensitive insert. A fingerprint scanner is hidden under the sensor. It should be noted that the shape of this very button painfully resembles that of Samsung devices. And the rest of the front panel is more like an iPhone. This is the M3 Mini. Reviews, however, do not particularly criticize its "similarity" to other devices.

The camera module is located on the back panel, the flash is under it. And even below is the Meizu corporate logo. There is nothing special here. It should only be noted that the back cover is very resilient and does not push through to the battery. Mechanical power and volume buttons are located as standard: on the right side of the device. It is interesting that the whole body is well-assembled: there are no cracks, nothing creaks and no backlash. People are used to Chinese crafts being pretty flimsy. But not Meizu M3 Mini. The owners' reviews indicate that the smartphone is exceptionally strong. For which honor and praise to the producers.

Screen

The new product has an IPS display with a diagonal of 5 inches. Is it a lot or a little? Let's put it this way: for a modern user, this is quite enough. The device will definitely appeal to those who are already pretty tired of modern "spade-like" smartphones. The resolution of the screen is 1280 by 720 pixels, that is, the display complies with the HD standard. It has a standard pixel density for this resolution - 294 per inch. This is a normal indicator. The declared contrast ratio is 1000 to 1. But in reality we have 677 to 1. Such a difference between the declared characteristics and the real ones is quite normal for modern manufacturers. Meizu M3 S is no exception. Its characteristics, by the way, are not very different from those stated.

Other features of the screen include decent brightness (400 cd per square meter). This brightness allows you to comfortably use the device even in direct sunlight. The image will still look great. Thanks to the IPS-matrix, the screen has very impressive viewing angles. The image starts to distort only when the device is tilted decently. Plus, IPS displays are remarkably accurate in color reproduction. And they do not fade over time like AMOLED panels. So it is not surprising that such a screen was chosen for installation in the Meizu M3 Mini smartphone. Now let's move on to the rest of the technical specifications.

Processor and RAM

An eight-core processor from MediaTek is comfortably located under the hood of the smartphone. It has a very high performance. This is due to the fact that the MT 6750 chip belongs to a new generation of products. In terms of power, it is comparable to those processors that are installed in modern flagships. Unsurprisingly, nothing is impossible for the Meizu M3 S 32GB. The characteristics of this smartphone quite allow it to playfully cope with the most difficult games and applications. As for the RAM of the device, there are two modifications - with 2 and 3 gigabytes of "RAM". Moreover, the three-gigabyte version costs almost the same as the version with 2 "gigs". If possible, it is better to purchase a device with more memory, so it will remain relevant longer. As for the memory available to the user, there are also two options. There are models with 16 and 32 gigabytes of internal memory. Of course, it's better to take more. Meizu, which we are analyzing here, may well argue even with an iPhone.

Graphics chip and other components

The graphics chip is the Mali T860-MP2. This chipset easily handles high definition video and has support for OpenGL and DirectX. This allows for incredible graphics performance in today's mobile games. A distinctive feature of this device is support for the latest generation LTE communication standard. But that's not all. The device is equipped with a Wi-Fi transmitter with a broadcasting frequency of 5 gigahertz. And that's not bad. Other features include a lightning-fast fingerprint scanner, the latest generation Bluetooth transmitter, a wide variety of sensors and a capacious 3020 mAh battery. The latter helps the smartphone to easily work for two days on a single charge. These are the main parameters of the screen, by the way, they are pretty good. They take this smartphone to a whole new level. Now let's move on to the camera of the device.

Camera (main)

A 13 megapixel high-aperture module is used as the main camera. A special feature of the camera's design is the optical system of five lenses. The camera has phase detection autofocus and a two-color LED flash. By the way, it is phase detection autofocus that gives the camera the ability to focus very quickly even in low light conditions. During the day, the pictures are simply excellent. and if you turn on the HDR mode, then in general you get works of art. But at night the camera is clearly missing something. Extraneous noise is visible to the naked eye. And the photos are somewhat blurry. Night shooting is clearly too tough for Meizu M3 Mini. Owner reviews, however, praise the camera. By the way, the device can record Full HD video in MP4 format. And that is not all. There is even a very popular recording option called "Slow Mo" - slow motion. This is a new option in the Meizu M3 S. Features and reviews are full of praise.

Camera (front)

Now let's move on to the characteristics of the front camera of the device. Unlike other manufacturers, Meizu takes front cameras seriously. Even this module has 5 megapixels and a complex optical system of 4 lenses. This camera is also fast and wide-angle. Photos are high quality and sharp. By the way, the front camera can also record videos in Full HD format. Of course, there is no practical benefit from this, but such a module is just perfect for video communication. Selfie lovers will be delighted too. Meizu M3 Mini, technical specifications and reviews about which we are analyzing here, is a completely modern device that will appeal to the vast majority of users. That was the calculation of the manufacturing company.

Firmware and software platform

As an operating system, this smartphone uses "Android" version 5.1 with the proprietary Flyme shell from Meizu. Many strongly dislike the proprietary shell, but we must admit that it is made simply and tastefully. She somehow diversifies the "naked" "Android". But what about those who absolutely do not like it in the Meizu M3 Mini? Firmware for w3bsit3-dns.com (a popular forum for mobile gadgets) can somewhat correct the situation. There are some very interesting "custom" options without Flyme. I must say that the fifth "Android" works under the proprietary shell quite quickly and "buglessly". Although this is probably the merit of the hardware platform of the smartphone. But everything looks very beautiful, this cannot be taken away. The most important thing is that the company regularly updates the firmware and "patches" old holes, fixes flaws. Not all manufacturers can boast of such product support.

As for the pre-installed applications, there is almost no unnecessary junk in the version of the gadget with international firmware. But if you are a "happy" owner of the Chinese version, then be prepared that your phone will have a lot of useless Chinese "slag" that cannot be removed. By the way, such devices lack Google Play and all other usual services. What should the owners of the Chinese Meizu M3 Mini do? Firmware on w3bsit3-dns.com, as a rule, is completely Russified, devoid of Chinese applications and has all the necessary services from Google. You just need to install it. But how to do it painlessly is a completely different question. In any case, Meizu gadgets can be easily flashed and modified. So there should definitely not be any problems with this. The main thing is to do everything according to the instructions.

There are smartphones that you take in your hands and immediately want the same one for yourself, despite the price and technical characteristics. He is charming and at the same time very smart, and everything else does not matter. This is how you can characterize the hero of our today's review - Meizu m3 s.

Usually, when buying an ultra-budget device, you don't expect to get a pleasant device, much less metal with an excellent assembly. But Meizu m 3 s could. this is to suggest He has external data of the flagship standard:

  • metal that pleasantly cools the hand;
  • 2.5D Xensation Cover, which creates a sense of the integrity of the device.

Let's go over the location of the main elements. On the right side there is a volume rocker and a power button. On the bottom panel there is a speaker, a high-quality microphone and a charging connector. At the top there is only a single 3.5 mm headphone jack. If we talk about sound, then the sound in the headphones, then the external speaker feels a little higher than average.

On the left is a tray where you can install either two nano SIM cards, or one SIM and a memory card. The choice is yours.

The front panel is covered with 2.5D glass. Overall, it looks good, but the metal frame still protrudes slightly. Above the five-inch HD display are:

  • front-camera;
  • good conversational speaker;
  • proximity and light sensors;
  • an event indicator that glows blue and white.

There is a physical button under the display that houses a good fingerprint scanner.

The back panel is metal, but at the same time it has plastic inserts on top and bottom, which are in perfect harmony with it in color. Behind is located:

  • camera;
  • two-tone flash;
  • Meizu logo.

In the hand of Meizu m3 s it feels very pleasant, as the smartphone fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.

Display

As we mentioned earlier, there is a 5-inch display with IPS matrix, which is very insidious. If you look at the bright colors from a right angle, everything is fine, but if you tilt the screen, you notice the inversion of colors. This can be seen especially clearly in the dark areas of the image, where black turns to blue, then to gray, then to white.

The screen resolution is 1280 * 720 pixels, that is, the HD format. The display supports 10 single touches.

The declared brightness is 380 cd / sq. m. In the bright sun it is difficult to see something, but at night at minimum brightness I do not want to make the backlight smaller. The display has an oleophobic coating, which is very pleasant to touch. If prints remain, it is very easy to wipe them off.

The screen looks decent for a smartphone with a price of about 10 thousand rubles, despite even some color inversion at extreme angles.

Performance and autonomy

Of iron, a processor from MTK 6750 and a Mali-T860 video accelerator are installed here. In performance tests, the state employee showed:

  • AnTuTu - 38,056 points;
  • Epic Citadel at ultra settings - 50.4 fps;
  • 3DMark showed 9143.

Meizu m3s comes in two versions:

  • 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal;
  • 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of built-in.

But the entire volume will not be available to the user. For example, if you take the 16 GB version, then the user can fill in only 10. Everything else will go under the system files. In any case, you can expand the built-in memory with a card, but at the expense of one SIM card.

In general, the gadget copes with games quite well. The phone is running Android 5.1, which makes it possible to split the screen into two parts for displaying two applications at the same time. Unfortunately, the choice of applications that can be displayed on the second screen is quite limited.

A 3000 mAh battery is installed inside the Meise m3s. A full charge of the battery with sufficient active use will last for 1-2 working days. Autonomy is okay here, especially considering that the smartphone has a slim, pretty body.

Camera

The Meizu m3 s has two camera modules: the main one with 13 megapixels and the front one with 5 megapixels. During the day, the smartphone takes good pictures, but at night the problems already begin. The camera here is not perfect, but for its price, in principle, quite nothing. You shouldn't find fault. But here there is everything you need and even a little more.

According to the settings, you can set here:

  • level;
  • grid;
  • manual exposure metering;
  • time;
  • location.

Of course, there is also a full-fledged manual mode, where you can change:

  • exposure;
  • contrast;
  • focus;
  • exposure;
  • saturation;
  • white balance, etc.

For those who like to take pictures in manual mode, the Meizu m3 s will be a godsend.

An overview of the camera and examples of photos can be seen in the video below.

Outcomes

Summing up, I would like to give the phone several advantages for:

  1. Appearance.
  2. Autonomy. For a 3000 mAh battery, the smartphone works for a rather long time.
  3. Camera.

The disadvantages include:

  1. Bug with a green screen in the camera.
  2. A fingerprint scanner in which you need to press a button, rather than put your finger on, to unlock your smartphone.
  3. The firmware is still not international, but universal and even more likely Chinese.

Otherwise, I really like Meizu m3 s, even more than Redmi 3. But whether to buy or not is up to you.

Video

The smartphone in my hands was ordered on AliExpress and came directly from China. Then the seller offered a white Meizu M3s mini with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of permanent memory for eight thousand rubles. The phone's firmware is Chinese, but there is a Russian language. Simply put, there were no problems using this version of the smartphone.

At the time of writing the review, the same seller was offering a white Meizu M3s mini with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage already with international firmware and at a price of 7,620 rubles. A black smartphone cost 7,957 rubles, a gold one - 8,221 rubles. Pink hasn't been on sale yet.

The cost of the older model Meizu M3s mini with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of permanent memory was 10,097 rubles for the black version and 10,493 rubles for the white or gold. There was no pink either.

In the official Russian online store MyMeizu.ru, white and black M3s mini cost the same, namely 11,990 rubles for the 2/16 GB model and 13,990 rubles for the 3/32 GB model. There were no gold and pink options.

Why such an overpayment in the official Russian store? First, for saving time. Choosing free shipping on AliExpress, you need to mentally prepare for the monthly waiting for the parcel. Buyers in Russia will have to wait much less.

Secondly, Meizu has no international warranty. By purchasing a device intended for the domestic market of China, you are left without any consumer rights and will solve any problems with your smartphone yourself. When you buy in an official Russian store, you get a guarantee and service.

I will not describe in detail every detail of the tested device. You can read long boring reviews with a bunch of information useless for the average user on other sites, and here everything is in business.

Design and execution

M3s mini is the only current Meizu metal smartphone with a 5-inch screen. It is followed by the recently tested by Lifehacker music lover ten-core flagship with a diagonal of 5.2 inches.

All other Meizu models, including the M3 Note, Pro 5, MX5 and the recently announced MX6, are equipped with a screen with a diagonal of 5.5 inches or more, that is, they are rather impressive phablets and not everyone likes.

By good tradition, Meizu engineers made an aluminum case that is incredibly similar to the iPhone for the M3s mini.

From an aesthetic point of view, you can't find fault with performance. The weight of the smartphone is only 138 grams with a thickness of 8.3 millimeters. Neat, thin lines with rounded corners look great. If you like the design of the iPhone, then Meizu's look will also appeal to your liking.

From a technical point of view, there are no complaints about the M3s mini case either. Not only have Meizu engineers chained this budget in metal, they have not yet cheated and precisely adjusted the details. Surprisingly, the super-cheap M3s mini is built as well as the flagship Pro 6.

For the sake of cheapening, aluminum corners of the case and thin plugs that hide the antennas went under the knife. The top and bottom of the back of the M3s mini are made of plastic.

The photo shows that it is quite difficult to distinguish plastic elements from metal. The colors are identical, the difference in texture is not felt even when touched, and only shiny decorative grooves give out the place where the metal passes into plastic.

On the front panel there is a single mechanical button, which is also an mTouch 2.1 fingerprint scanner. Touching the button is equivalent to the "Back" action, and pressing it returns the user to the home screen or duplicates the power button when the display is off.

The front-facing position of the scanner is certainly more convenient if you often refer to your smartphone lying on the table. The scanner takes a print from any angle and fires in a split second.

The power button and volume rocker are located on the right. If you do not press them, but only slightly touch them, a tiny backlash will be noticeable. In general, there are no complaints about the buttons.

On the left is a hybrid slot for two nanoSIM cards, one of which can be replaced with a microSD card with a capacity of up to 128 GB inclusive.

The external speaker, microphone and microUSB port are located at the bottom.

The only thing that the designers and engineers of Meizu M3s mini screwed up with was the position of the headphone jack.

Well, why do it on top? After all, we send the smartphone to the pocket with the upper part forward. With such an arrangement of the socket, an additional mechanical stress on the plug and wire occurs, which means inevitable kinks and premature failure.

Another drawback common to all Meizu smartphones is the lack of protection against water. It's time to catch up with Samsung and release equipment that meets at least the IP67 standard, and preferably IP68 right away.

Screen

Meizu M3s mini is equipped with a 5-inch IPS HD display with a resolution of 1 280 × 720 pixels.

If it seems to you that the lack of Full HD in 2016 cannot be forgiven even for a budget smartphone, then just look at the ppi value, which here is 296 pixels per inch. Jobs said that at 300 ppi the pixels are narrower, and it is unlikely that the shortage of 4 ppi greatly affected the picture quality. At least my eyes were never able to detect the pixels on the M3s mini's screen.

The use of IPS gives the typical color accuracy of this type of display without wild, unnatural shades and white distortions. It is clear that it would be naive to count on a top-end matrix in a smartphone for 8 thousand, but the picture looks acceptable even with a strong tilt of the screen, the colors are only slightly distorted towards yellow and purple.

The presence of an anti-reflective coating allows you to comfortably work with a smartphone in the bright summer sun, and the use of the now fashionable 2.5D glass adds even more streamlining to the body.

I never found information about the type of protective glass used in the M3s mini. But it certainly is here, and good, because for two weeks of active use of the smartphone, not a single scratch has appeared on the screen.

Filling

Inside the M3s mini is an eight-core MTK MT6750 (four Cortex-A53 at 1.5 GHz and four Cortex-A53 at 1 GHz) and Mali-T860 graphics. MediaTek chips are not very suitable for heavy 3D games, but they perform excellently in terms of speed and smoothness of the system, especially when a less resource-intensive HD display is installed instead of Full HD.

In combination with even 2 GB of fast LPDDR3 RAM, the smartphone shows impressive results both in synthetics and at the level of sensations when working directly with the device.

The system is flying, applications are flying. No friezes, no slowdowns.

I did not have the opportunity to look at the older model with 3 GB of RAM, but it is logical to assume that the increased amount of memory will manifest itself when working at the same time and switching between several weighty applications. However, the younger M3s mini does an excellent job with everyday scenarios.

The presence of a slot for a memory card actually makes any reasoning about the size of the built-in storage meaningless, and therefore you only need to choose between the older and younger M3s mini models based on the number and resource intensity of the applications used.

Unfortunately, Meizu M3s mini does not have NFC, but there is support for all other current types of communication, including 5 GHz Wi-Fi, 4G and Bluetooth 4.0.

  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac.
  • 2G GSM / GPRS / EDGE (900/1 800/1 900 MHz).
  • 3G WCDMA / HSPA + (900/2 100 MHz).
  • 4G FDD-LTE (1 800/2 100/2 600 MHz).
  • 3G TD-SCDMA.
  • 4G TD-LTE.
  • Bluetooth 4.0, BLE support.
  • GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS.

Cameras

Obviously, no outstanding sensors can be expected in such a cheap smartphone. But those that are, provide an acceptable quality of shooting in automatic mode under favorable conditions. And the lack of light can be compensated for by manual mode, HDR and Meizu's proprietary circular two-tone flash. Thanks to the powerful stuffing, the cameras work very quickly.

The main camera here is exactly the same as in the Meizu M3 Note: 13 megapixels, f / 2.2, powerful flash, there is a PDAF. You can judge the quality of the photo yourself.

The front 5-megapixel camera with f / 2.0 aperture and software enhancement of images gives wonderful selfies and records Full HD video.

System

M3s mini runs on Android 5.1, on top of which the proprietary shell Meizu Flyme 5.1 is installed.

Flyme almost completely changes the default Android interface, but you get used to it quickly enough.

Flyme has no superfluous software, only the most necessary pre-installed applications and a utility for optimizing and maintaining the system in a normal state. With its help, you can launch a comprehensive smartphone diagnostics in one tap, put things in order in memory, debug power consumption, check for viruses, and so on.

At the beginning of the review, I talked about just one system button on the front panel, which takes over the "Back" and "Home" functions. Are you wondering how the application manager is called in this case? To do this, just swipe up from the bottom of the screen. Why didn't Google come up with this?

Flyme is perfectly optimized, and in combination with a powerful filling, an extremely nimble system is obtained, which is pleasant to use.

Battery

The M3s mini has a 3,020 mAh non-removable battery. With moderate use, the battery lasts for two days. In more active scenarios with a visit to YouTube, Play Music, frequent browsing of the browser and social networks, the smartphone lives for 18-22 hours.

A serious struggle broke out between Xiaomi and Meizu, because these Chinese brands decided to conquer the market with their near-budget smartphones with characteristics that are far from budget by today's standards. And before Meizu's company had time to update the legendary Meizu m2 phone, which many users liked with a price / quality ratio, after Meizu m3 came Meizu m3s.

Positioning and appearance

Initially, Meise was released in two versions: the Note version and the compact version. The same can be seen in solutions from Xiaomi, take at least the latest models of Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and a smaller Xiaomi Redmi 3. As for Meise m3s- this is almost the same Meizu m3, but in an aluminum case. Apparently, the company decided to go the way of Xiaomi and release not only Note in metal. By the way, the smartphone practically took over all its features from him: a stylish candy bar with rounded iPhone-like edges. At the back you can see a metal back and two plastic overlays: above and below.

Unlike competitors from Xiaomi, the phone stands out with a protective 2.5D glass with an oleophobic coating. Perhaps, just for the sake of this, it is worth changing the m2 mini to a metal novelty. It is also worth buying due to the fact that a fingerprint scanner appeared in the home button, previously it was only available in expensive models.

Technical specifications

Now it's worth dwelling on the characteristics and the first thing worth mentioning is a high-quality five-inch display. The manufacturer has left HD resolution, which should have a positive effect on autonomy, especially since the device uses a 3020 mAh battery. Responsible for performance is the platform built on the MT6750 media library processor. The graphic part works on the mali-T860MP2 chip. If we talk about memory, there are two versions available: with 16GB / 2GB, as well as with 32GB / 3GB of permanent and RAM, respectively.

There is also an expansion slot that supports microsd cards up to 256 gigabytes. As for the photographic capabilities, the camera shoots at about the same level as in previous models, because the smartphone uses a 13-megapixel sensor with an aperture of 2.2. It is difficult to predict whether the new m3s will repeat the success of the best-selling m2 mini on the domestic market, but one way or another, the smartphone deserves attention.
