Below is a list of some of the terms you may come across when working with video and audio files. You do not need to have this knowledge to work with Movavi programs, but if you want to learn more about the intricacies of media processing, you can start with this section.

Container Format (Video Format)
Container Formatis a video or audio save file format that contains video and audio data in separate streams, as well as other data such as subtitle tracks or additional information about the file. The container can be compared to a box that contains all the components that make up the video. The image below shows the content of the video file schematically. The container format is the information that usually has to be processed when editing video files. The file extension can also determine its format, for example, files with the extension*.mp4 corresponds to MP4 format, *.mkv extension– Matroska format, etc. Since the container format combines different video streams, two files of the same extension can be encrypted with different codecs, which means that one of them can be played in the player without problems, while the other one can not be played at all.
Codec
A video file contains video and audio streams encoded with video or audio codecs that compress the data. In this case, a codec can be compared to a language: in order to play the encoded video, the player needs to "understand" the encoding method so that it can decrypt or decode this file. If the computer cannot decrypt the new codec, the file can be converted to another format or a set of required codecs can be installed. However, be careful: many malicious programs are disguised as codec sets. Always download codecs only from manufacturers' websites or other trusted sources.
Applied to media files, bitrateis the number of bits played during one second of video or audio. The higher the bitrate, the more detailed the information that fits in one second of video or audio, and, consequently, the higher the quality of the final file.There are two types of bitrate- constant bitrate(CBR) and variable bitrate(VBR). Videos from constant bitrate have (which is quite obvious from the name) the same bitrate for each frame, regardless of the complexity of the image on the frame: simple frames consisting, for example, entirely of black, will have the same bitrate as complex color frames. However, there are certain limitations, since simple frames require more bits than are needed to transmit them, and complex frames are limited in quality. However, in the video variable bitrate each frame is given exactly as many bits as needed, without quality degradation or data loss. In most cases, it is recommended to use a variable bit rate, however, a constant bit rate is well suited for streaming media content.
Frame frequency
Frame rate or frames per second (FPS) refers to how many video frames are contained in one second of video. At a low frame rate, the video may look jerky, while at a high frame rate, the video plays smoothly in high quality. Recording high frame rate video (48 or 60 FPS) will require more sophisticated hardware and more free disk space; however, if you slow down a video at a high frame rate, the "slow motion" effect will be applied to the video without any visible tearing in the image. The standard in the field of cinema can be considered 24 or 25 frames per second, which are most comfortably perceived by the human eye.
Interlacing and deinterlacing
Video Interlacingis the standard method used in analogue broadcasting., which began to be used in connection with the technical limitations of television broadcasting in the early stages of its development. Using this method, each video frame is divided into half-frames, with each frame containing alternating odd and even rows. This method allows you to transmit video at a frame rate twice as high as usual, achieving much smoother playback, and the human eye simply does not have time to notice alternating rows in the image. However, on digital monitors, interlaced video can cause visible distortion in the form of horizontal lines. Deinterlacing, in which algorithms are applied to the video to merge two fields into one frame, can help to get rid of a number of defects. Remultiplexing
Many container formats support standard codecs such as the H.264 codec, which can be saved in various formats: MP4, AVI, M2TS, MKV, MOV, etc. By converting codec-encoded video, you can simply transfer the video stream from one container to another without re-encoding (if the given codec is supported by both the input and output formats of the container). Sampling frequency
The sampling rate, measured in hertz (Hz), refers to how many samples of digital audio are recorded every second. The recommended sampling frequency of 44100 Hz completely covers the spectrum of human sound perception. It is this sample rate value that is also used for audioCDs. Subtitles
Subtitled refers to text that appears on the screen (usually at the bottom) that is a written duplication of the speech that is heard in the video, or contains additional explanatory information and a description of the sound effects. Subtitles are often used by viewers with hearing impairments, language learners, and when the video is not dubbed into the target language. Subtitles can be nested within a video file container (also called softsub ), saved to a separate file (in *.srt, *.ass, *.sub or other subtitle formats) or displayed over the video stream without the possibility of turning them off ( hardsub).
Video formats
Audio Video Interleaved - AVI (*.avi)
AVI is a container created by the companyMicrosoft in the early 90s. The AVI format supports a large number of video and audio codecs, and can contain up to 16 audio tracks and up to 16 subtitle tracks. Despite the fact that the AVI format is widespread on all operating systems, it is gradually being replaced by more advanced formats.
Divx (*.divx)
DivX - the format of the company's own developmentDivx. Using a proprietary codec, the DivX format achieves high compression rates while maintaining good quality performance. The DivX codec can also be used to encode AVI video. The DivX format is not supported by many media players, and also cannot be played without the appropriate codec.Movavi Video Editor can work with DivX files, andMovavi Video Converter can open and convert DivX files to any other format.
Flash Video Format - FLV (*.flv)
The FLV format, developed by Macromedia and currently owned by Adobe, is often used for Internet video because it is supported by most browsers, as well as most video hosting and social networks. The FLV format can contain video encoded with Sorenson, FLV1, VP6, and H.264 codecs.
QuickTime-MOV (*.mov)
Developed by Apple, QuickTime is supported by default on Mac computers and iOS devices; so if you want your video to be guaranteed to play on your Mac, it's best to convert it to MOV format. If your files will also be played on a Windows computer, converting the video to MP4 format is recommended because Windows OS needs to download and install the QuickTime codec from Apple's official website in order to play MOV videos.

WebM
WebM is a free and open source container format developed byGoogle. It is commonly used in a widely used web video format that is easy to embed in HTML5 video tags. The WebM format can contain video encoded with the free VP8 and VP9 codecs or audio encoded with Vorbis audio.
Movavi file formats
*.mep, *.mep2
These formats are used by Movavi Video Editor and Movavi Slideshow to create editable projects that contain data about the paths to the location of the files, the order of the files on the timeline, applied effects, and other information about the work on the project. Please note that projects created with later versions of the software may not be compatible with the latest versions of Movavi Video Editor.
*.mscproj, *.mrec
If we need to convert a video from one format to another and still be able to edit it, there is Movavi Video Converter for that.

About Usage
Let's say right away that the Movavi video file converter accepts almost all possible video and audio file formats that can only be on a computer.
To convert a particular file using this program, you must do the following:
- Launch Movavi Converter.
- Drag the source file into the program window. This can be done using a set of commands located on the top panel of the program, or by simply dragging a file from a folder to the corresponding field with the mouse cursor.
Top bar commands include buttons such as Add Video, Add Audio, and Add Image. They are designed for mounting.

So the format can be selected from the drop-down list, which opens by pressing the button highlighted in green in Figure 4.
And the save folder can be selected by clicking on the "Browse" button.
After that, a standard selection dialog will open, where the user specifies the desired folder.
As you can see, the format selection window is very convenient here. It has tabs "Recent", "Devices", "Video and Audio", "Pictures".
The first tab shows the most recently used formats.
The Devices tab shows a list of a wide variety of devices, including iPhone, Xbox, PlayStation, and more.
The program itself will determine which format is suitable for a particular device. The other two tabs are for direct format selection.
- After the above parameters are determined, it remains just to click the "Start" button in the lower right corner of the program and wait for the conversion to complete. After that, you can open the folder specified earlier for saving and use the converted file there.
- To do a little editing, you need to select the desired file from the list and select the appropriate command on the panel highlighted in Figure 5 with a green frame.
There you can rotate, display the video and perform other operations with it.
For example, to add an inscription, you need to do the following:
- Click on the video in the list of downloaded ones and select the "Inscription" command;
- After that, a new menu will open, in which you can specify the transparency of the inscription, text color, outline color, font and enter the inscription itself in the appropriate field;
- Now, in the right part of the program window, under the video, you need to select the time frame when the inscription will be present in the video (this is done by moving the start and end sliders);
- Now it remains only to click the "Apply" button, which is located under the text entry field and is highlighted with a green frame in Figure 8.
As you can see, all operations are performed in this program very simply and quickly, but these are not all the advantages of the Movavi converter. Although it also has disadvantages.

In order to convert some video: first, select the format you want to convert the file to (see Fig. 1), and then set the settings (see Fig. 2):
You need to select the quality (there are pre-installed options, I always use them: high, medium and low quality);
Then indicate what to cut and what to cut (I rarely use it personally, I think in most cases it will not be necessary);
Then the program will start converting. The operating time can vary greatly, depending on: the source video, the power of your PC, the format you are converting to.
On average, to find out the conversion time, just divide the length of your video by 2-3, i.e. if your video is 1 hour long, then the time for the envelope will be approximately 20-30 minutes.

I put this program in second place not by chance.
Firstly, its most important advantage is that it is easy and fast to work with (even a novice PC user will be able to quickly figure out and convert all his video files).
Secondly, the program supports just a huge variety of formats (there are dozens of them, see Fig. 5): ASF, AVI, MP4, DVD, etc. Moreover, the program has a sufficient number of templates: you can quickly select the video you need for driving for Android (for example) or for Web video.

And, thirdly, the Bigasoft Total Video Converter program has the most convenient editor (Fig. 6). You can easily and quickly trim edges, apply effects, watermark, subtitles, etc. In fig. 6 I easily and quickly cut the jagged edge on the video with a simple mouse movement (see green arrows)! The program shows the original video (Original) and what you get after applying filters (Preview).
Bottom line: the program is suitable for absolutely everyone - from novice users to experienced ones. There are all the necessary settings for quick editing and converting video. The only drawback is that the program is paid. In general, I recommend!
3. Movavi Video Converter (best for "fitting" videos to the right size)

Very interesting video converter. To begin with, it should be said that the program fully supports the Russian language. It is also impossible not to note the intuitive interface: even a user who does not work much with video can easily figure out “where is what and where to click” ...
By the way, the trick that caught my eye: after adding the video and choosing the format (to which to convert, see Fig. 7) - you can specify what size of output file you need (see Fig. 8)!
For example, if you don't have much space left on your flash drive and the file is too big - no problem, open it in Movavi and select the size you need - the converter will automatically select the right quality and compress the file! The beauty!
In addition, it is impossible not to note the convenient video editing panel (you can crop the edges, add a watermark, change the brightness of the picture, etc.).
On fig. 9 you can see an example of changing the brightness (the picture became more saturated) + a watermark was superimposed.
By the way, I cannot fail to note that the developers of the program claim that the speed of their product is much higher than that of its competitors (see Fig. 10). From myself I will say that the program works quickly, but in sincerity fig. 10 100% I doubt it. At least on my home PC, the compression speed is faster, but not as much as on the graph.

A very popular video file converter. I would compare it to a combine: it supports the vast majority of videos that can only be found on the net. The program, by the way, supports the Russian language (after launch, you need to open the settings and select it from the list of available languages).
It is also impossible not to note the wide variety of options and settings for editing and converting video. For example, the proposed formats into which video can be transcoded are dizzying (see Fig. 12): MKV, MOV, MPEG, AVI, WMV, RM, SWF, etc.
In addition, Xilisoft Video Converter has interesting features for editing video images (the Effects button on the toolbar). On fig. 13 shows the effects that you can use to improve the original picture: for example, crop the edges, apply a watermark, increase the brightness and saturation of the image, apply various effects (make the video black and white or overlay "mosaic").
It is also convenient that the program immediately shows how to change the picture.

Bottom line: a universal program for solving a huge number of video issues. We can note a good compression speed, a wide variety of settings, support for the Russian language, the ability to quickly edit the picture.
