How to work with network files when using Windows offline mode. How Windows Defender has changed in the Anniversary Update Windows 10 offline mode

At working with files and folders on the network you can make them available offline and access them even when your computer is not connected to a network. This can be used when connecting a laptop to a network in the workplace.

If a file is made available offline, then Windows makes a copy of it on the computer. This file is called an offline file. After disconnecting from the network, you will be able to open, modify and save the file in the same way as before disconnecting. And after the next connection to the network, Windows automatically synchronizes the offline file on the computer with the corresponding network file.

How to make files and folders available offline

  1. When the computer is online, locate the file or folder that you want to make available offline.
  2. Right-click a file or folder and select Always available offline.

Notes:

  • To verify that a file or folder is available offline, right-click the file or folder and see if the check box is available offline.
  • If you no longer need to access the file or folder offline, right-click the file or folder, and then clear the Available offline check box.

How to work offline when you have network access

Sometimes it's better to work with offline versions of files even when connected to a network. This is useful if your network connection is slow or having problems.

  1. Open a network folder containing offline files. Then click the Disconnect button on the toolbar. (This button only appears if the folder is made available offline.)
  2. When you are finished working with files offline, click the button on the toolbar Work on the Internet. All changes made to offline files are synchronized with online files.

How to enable the use of offline files

If the Offline Files feature is disabled, you must enable it to work with Offline Files from a network share.

  1. On the tab General click Enable Offline Files.
  2. You must restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

How to find out if you are working online or offline

If you're not sure which version of the file you're working with (offline or online), follow these steps.

  1. Open the network folder containing the file.
  2. Select the file with the mouse. If the parameter Offline work is displayed on the toolbar, you are currently working online and double-clicking the file will open the online version. If the parameter Online work is displayed on the toolbar, you are currently working offline, and double-clicking the file will open the standalone version.

To view offline files

If offline files are stored in different folders, you may want to view them without opening each folder separately.

You can view all offline files in one place like this:

  1. Open the Offline Files window.
  2. On the tab General click View Offline Files.

Using the sync center for offline files

Windows sync offline files automatically, and if the network file is changed, then the offline copy stored on the computer is also updated, and vice versa.

But, sometimes you need to sync your offline files immediately to make sure you have the latest files online.

For this you can use sync center:

  1. Open the sync center.
  2. Choose a folder Offline Files. Then click on the toolbar button Synchronize to sync all offline files.

Clue: You do not need to open the Sync Center to sync only one folder, file, or selected files. Right-click the object, point to the Sync menu item, and then select Sync Selected Offline Files.

Who used and still uses mobile Internet 2G, he knows well how slow downloading even small files can be. And even if you have 3G-Internet, the data rate may be very slow when you are away from the signal source. The question is, how to update Windows in such conditions, if the Update Center barely pulls?

Or, for example, such a situation.

You want to update Windows 10 on a working office computer, but the latter, being connected only to a local network, does not have access to the Internet. The way out in such cases may be an offline update, since Microsoft has provided such an opportunity. All you need for this is a computer with stable and fast internet and a flash drive or any other portable device.

The ability to download and install cumulative updates offline has been available since 2016.

Everything is very simple. You go to a special site and see which update is the latest, and then compare the build number on the site with the version number of Windows 10 you have installed. If a new update is available for your PC, download it from the cumulative updates catalog and install it as a regular program.

And now in more detail.

First, we check the current version of Windows 10 on the computer, for which we open the application "Options", go to the section System -> (in build 1703 "About") and write down the current version number.

Then follow the link support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4018124, look at the current version number and compare it with what we have on the local computer.

As of December 18, the most relevant version is the version under the index 16299.125 , and you have, for example, installed version 15254.125 . So, we are behind the times. Not good, this needs to be fixed. Write down the ID of the last cumulative update (it always starts with KB) , sit down at a computer connected to a normal Internet, open the update catalog at www.catalog.update.microsoft.com, we drive in the recorded ID in the search field and click "Find".

On the next page, select the cumulative update corresponding to your bit depth and processor architecture from the list and download it to a USB flash drive.

If you’re planning to be in an area with no online coverage, such as on a long-distance flight or a sailing excursion, you can prepare your Windows 10 device to allow you to play offline. Most games available in Microsoft Store on your Windows 10 device support offline play, but check the details of the game to make sure yours is supported by searching for your game at http://www.xbox.com .

Most games with a campaign mode will be playable offline, but games with network co-op or multiplayer features will not work while you're offline.

While playing offline, some features, such as the ability to purchase additional items from the Microsoft Store, will not be available. Additionally, any leaderboards will be unavailable while you"re offline.

Achievements

If you earn any achievements while playing offline, they will sync to your account the next time you sign in to Xbox Live on your device. You won't see a toast notification letting you know that you unlocked the achievement until you sign in to Xbox Live on that device.

cloud saves and offline game play

Before you go offline, connect to Xbox Live to sync your most recent game save to the cloud. While you play offline, your game save progress will continue to be saved locally, and it'll sync the next time you sign in to Xbox Live. If you want to continue playing on a different device (or platform, if the game supports ), you’ll need to go online and connect to Xbox Live to allow your local saved game to sync with the cloud again.

If you're on a Windows 10 device, your cloud saves will automatically start uploading once you're signed in and connected to Xbox Live. Game save sync is usually fast, but allow a couple of minutes before you try playing on another device.

How to enable offline play on your device

If you're planning on playing offline, you'll need to prepare your Windows 10 device while you have an online connection. It's important that you do this while you're online, as once you go offline, you won't be able to make these changes.

note You can only change your designated offline device three times per year.

Prepare your device

If you have multiple Windows 10 devices, you'll need to make sure that the device you intend to use offline is set as the designated offline device. You can only have one device as your designated offline device.

To set your device as your designated offline device:

  1. Make sure you're online.
  2. Check that your device has the latest Windows updates: Go to start > Settings > Update & Security > windows update and see if any relevant updates are available.
  3. Open the Store. You'll be prompted to sign in if you haven't already.
  4. Select the Me
  5. Select Settings, and then under Offline Permissions On.

Once you set this, any devices previously designated as offline will be toggled to Off, and you'll no longer be able to play games offline on those devices.

Prepare your game or games

Once your device is set up, you'll need to launch each game you want to play offline while signed in to Xbox Live. You only need to do this once per game, and you'll need to do this even if you've already launched the game on your device.

Repeat this process for each game you want to play offline. Once completed, you can go offline at any time and launch those games whenever you want to play them, without needing to sign in online each time.

Troubleshooting

If you're having trouble playing offline, these solutions may help you resolve any problems.

How do I know that my game supports offline play?

Most games available in Microsoft Store on your Windows 10 device support offline play, but check the details of the game to make sure yours is supported by searching for your game at http://www.xbox.com .

Which features of my game will be available while playing offline?

If your game was installed from Microsoft Store on your Windows 10 device, details of the features available while playing offline can be found in the game’s FAQ:

  1. Open the Store and click the Me icon (this is your profile picture).
  2. Select My Library, and then under Games, select Show all.
  3. Select the game you want to play offline, and then scroll down to Additional Information.
  4. Under learn more, select the support link.
  5. On the support page, select the link for the FAQ, and then look for the “play offline” details for that game.

If your game was not installed from Microsoft Store on your Windows 10 device, check with the game publisher to see whether offline play is supported on Windows 10.

I'm unable to set my device as my designated offline device

This may mean that you've already changed your designated offline device three times in the last year. If this happens, you will need to wait until one year after your first reset to be able to change your designated offline device again.

I'm already offline and haven't followed the steps above to prepare my device

If you're already offline and didn't set your device as your designated offline device, you won't be able to play games offline. You need to be online while you do this, and while you launch the game before going offline. To fix this, go online and follow the to prepare your device and set it as your designated offline device.

I no longer want my device set as my designated offline device. How do I remove it?

This scenario may also apply if you’re planning on trading or giving your Windows 10 device to someone else.

If you still own the device, you can remove the offline designation by doing the following:

  1. Make sure you're online.
  2. Open the Store and click the Me icon.
  3. Select Settings, and then under Offline Permissions, make sure that the toggle is set to Off.

If you no longer have the device, you can remove this setting online by signing in to https://account.microsoft.com/devices and looking for your device. If you see “Play games offline” listed underneath the description for that device, then it’s still your designated offline device. To remove the design:

  1. Under the details of the device, select Remove offline play.
  2. On the confirmation screen, select the I'm ready to remove offline play on this PC checkbox.
  3. Select Remove to confirm and remove this as your designated offline device.

note This will count as one of your three changes per year.

Programs designed to work on the Internet and with the Internet can be used without the World Wide Web currently connected. Designed for this "Offline mode" or function "Work autonomously". How to work with it, I already wrote in a post

Sometimes there are situations when you need to exit the offline mode. The main reason for the need to perform such an operation may be the automatic transition of the browser to offline mode.

Basically, browsers (, etc.) or mail collectors (Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.) switch to offline mode. In this mode, working with Internet sites and mail accounts on the network is impossible.

!!! The popular browser does not support offline work.

Disabling the offline mode of operation can be performed in several ways, depending on the computer literacy of the user, the level of access to computer resources, and other incoming circumstances.

Open a browser. To cancel offline mode, open the menu "File" any browser. Find functionality "Work Offline" and uncheck.

Opera Internet Explorer Mozilla Firefox

Refresh the page. You can follow the links again.

For Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc., we do the same. Open the mail collector. To disable offline mode, open the menu "File", find the line "Offline work", uncheck the activation box. Done - you can send or receive email again.

For Internet Explorer

Eif item"Work autonomously"missing, then do the following:

1. Go to item "Service" and open the link "Internet Options" to alternatively perform the operation of disabling the offline mode of the browser.

2. Click the tab "Connections" dialog box that opens and check the box " Never use dial-up connections."

3. Press the button "Network configuration" and uncheck all the boxes in the dialog box that opens "Configuring LAN Settings".

4. Press the button OK to execute the command and confirm your choice by pressing the button again OK in the request window.

5. Shut down the window "Internet Options" and restart your computer to apply the selected changes.

If for some reason it is impossible to disable offline mode using the methods described above, do the following:

1. Press the button "Start" to call the main menu of the system and go to the item "Run" to use the following method to disable Internet Explorer offline mode.

2. Enter a value regedit in field "Open" and press the button OK to confirm the launch of the tool "Registry Editor".

3. Expand the registry branch HKEY+CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings and select or create a string parameter DWORD GlobalUserOffline.

4. Enter the value of the selected parameter: 00000000 and close the Registry Editor utility.

5. Restart your computer to apply the selected changes.

There is also a safe mode in Windows 10, no matter how users of earlier versions of the OS deny it. Entering it just like that does not make sense, but in some situations it is very relevant and necessary. For example, a computer has got a virus that requires a special code to be entered at system startup, and you can get it using SMS to a short number. Situations, in general, can be different and completely different from each other, but the way of solving is sometimes the same. Let's see how you can enter safe mode in Windows 10.

How to Enter Safe Mode in Windows 10 - Three Ways!

You can enter safe mode in the "ten" in three different ways, if we are not talking about booting the system from another media and entering "safe mode" from there. So, the easiest and surest way to boot in safe mode is to use the good old System Configuration utility.

The next option to enter the safe mod is to use the "Special Boot Options". This is a new utility that is unfamiliar to users of older versions of Windows. To get there, you need to go along this path:

The last option, which is similar to the previous one, but starts a little differently - booting in safe mode before starting the system. To achieve this, you need to turn off the computer completely, and then start it again and press the F8 key until the corresponding menu appears.

The items described in the previous method will be available in it. If nothing happens with F8, try again, but with the Delete key.

We looked at several working ways on how to enter safe mode in the "top ten" and start correcting errors made during the full operation of the system.
