All microsoft lumia 640 xl. The SIM card is used in mobile devices to store data that certifies the authenticity of mobile service subscribers

The range of "Windows-backgrounds" was replenished with the following models. Four variants of the Lumia 640: Single SIM and 3G, Single SIM and LTE, Dual SIM and 3G, Dual SIM and LTE. Also, the public were presented with four variants of the Lumia 640 XL with a similar combination of distinctive features. The younger model Lumia 640 is equipped with a 5″ screen, the Lumia 640 XL has a slightly larger screen - 5.7″. Considering that all smartphones will be sold at the same time, and the single and dual SIM options will have the same price, the question involuntarily arises: what, in fact, were Microsoft marketers thinking? The Lumia lineup is already crowded with devices, and you can figure out how one of them differs from the other only if you read the lists of characteristics and compare them line by line. The release of four pairs of smartphones with the same price and the difference only in the number of slots for SIM-cards does not make the process of choosing a mobile companion any easier. Why even launch identical smartphones with support for one or two SIM-card slots with the same price tags? After all, it is clear that other things being equal, buyers will prefer models with support for two SIM-cards.

Be that as it may, at the time of writing the review on the Microsoft website, there was information only about four variants of the smartphone: 640 LTE, 640 DS LTE, 640 DS 3G and 640 XL DS 3G. Further in the text of the review, the abbreviation "DS" means support for two SIM-cards. For all variants of the smartphone, several body colors are available: white, black, red and blue. Some of them were in stock, others were only available by pre-order.

SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 became the basis for devices of the Lumia 640 family, all smartphones are equipped with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of flash memory. The display type is the same for all models (the diagonal is different), but the main cameras of the 640 and 640 XL are different: 8 MP and 13 MP matrices, f/2.2 and f/2.0 optics, respectively. The front cameras are also different: the Lumia 640 XL has a 5 MP wide-angle Full HD camera and the Lumia 640 has a 0.9 MP HD camera. Naturally, the larger 640 XL has a more powerful battery: 3000 mAh versus 2500 mAh. And one more difference: models with LTE support are also equipped with an NFC module.

The hero of this review was a smartphone in the Lumia 640 DS 3G variant.

Equipment

The smartphone comes in traditional packaging for the current generation of Lumia devices. The design is assembled from two boxes, the inner part is placed in the outer cover. There is little information about the parameters of the smartphone on the packaging, all of it is presented in the form of a few icons. Some details about the characteristics of a particular smartphone model can be found in the text and abbreviations from the sticker glued to the package.

The mobile computer that had been in the editorial office included only a charger and documentation. According to information from the Microsoft website, Lumia 640 buyers will receive just such a modest set of accessories.

Appearance and usability

There are several typical skins for Lumia smartphones. The first group includes strict rectangular (in plan) devices with chopped sharp edges. Devices of the second group also differ in faces that intersect strictly at an angle of 90 degrees, but their body is made of plastic, not metal. Finally, the third extensive group includes models with rounded, smoothed hull contours and smoothly transitioning edges. Most representatives of the third category are also made of plastic. Obviously, cutting and turning metal at a right angle is still easier than giving it a rounded or curved shape.

It is to the third category of Lumia smartphones that the current hero of the review belongs. Smooth lines of the body and colored plastic give the Lumia 640 a somewhat frivolous look, but this is a long-standing trend of Nokia/Microsoft designers. They love cheerful and cheerful tones in their devices, and we can only praise them for this. For lovers of strict style, there is a black and white back panel.

At first glance, the Lumia 640 makes a good impression, but the devil, as you know, is in the details. And the longer you work with a smartphone, the more, unfortunately, you find such disappointing moments.

The main, main, almost ultimatum drawback of the Lumia 640 design is extremely slippery plastic. Perhaps the current hero of the review is the most “unstoppable” in the bad sense of the word smartphone from those that have been in my hands. The lacquered back and sides of the Lumia 640 turn the smartphone into a bar of soap. Nothing helps - neither a sufficiently large width of the edges, nor a significant surface area of the rear panel; smartphone still every now and then strives to slip out of the hands. It is out of the question to use the device in transport, and even more so to do something there with one hand: one extra push and the Lumia 640 will go from the palm of your hand towards the center of the Earth. What made Microsoft designers choose such material for the case of the hero of the review can be understood, but what allowed the engineers to agree with them is difficult. Most Lumies use a much less slippery soft-touch plastic that feels like rubber to the touch. However, judging by the appearance of the recently announced Lumia 435, slippery plastic is a long-term trend in the work of Microsoft developers. It is sad. Well, to finally close the issue of the plastic back panel of the Lumia 640, I note that, as it should be for a varnished surface, it perfectly collects fingerprints, traces of touches and scratches.

Given the above, it would be possible not to dwell on how the smartphone lies in the palm of your hand. But if we ignore the lacquer plastic or imagine that the owner of a mobile computer has rough skin or the surface of a smartphone is covered with a layer of dirt, then the following should be noted: in terms of dimensions, the Lumia 640 fits perfectly into a medium-sized palm. The smartphone has to be held tightly, and the fingers have something to catch on - the wide side edges help. When working with a smartphone, the power button is located just under the thumb of the right hand. The relatively light weight of the mobile computer does not cause discomfort or fatigue.

It is difficult to control the Lumia 640 with one hand, but with a strong desire it is possible. The main obstacle in this is not a large display, but, as already mentioned, slippery plastic. In the pocket of trousers and shirts, a mobile computer fits without problems.

There are no complaints about the quality of materials and assembly of Lumia 640. Plastic does not look cheap, does not crunch or creak, the back panel of the smartphone does not bend, there are no backlashes of parts and extraneous sounds during shaking.

Let's move on to the next unpleasant feature of the Lumia 640's appearance and design - a wide gap for a phone speaker. When the smartphone was in the editorial office, a certain amount of dust had already accumulated in this deep container. Over time, there will be even more of it, if you do not pay due attention to its cleaning. But the speaker hole isn't the only dust and dirt collector on the front of the Lumia 640.

The same depth, but much smaller hole is provided for the microphone, which is located at the bottom of the screen. It will be really difficult to clean anything out of it. This “deep” list ends with a gap between the protective glass of the display and its plastic rim.

The entire front panel of the Lumia 640 is Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Beneath it are the display, front camera lens, light and proximity sensors. The Lumia 640 does not have dedicated touch buttons for controlling the system, they have been replaced by virtual counterparts.

The back panel of the smartphone covers its entire body, "overlapping" going to all the side faces. This design of a mobile computer is also called a "boat". The design is strong, but it can be very inconvenient if you need to gain access to the battery compartment. Lumia 640 is one such case. In order to more or less quickly detach the back panel, you have to put quite a lot of pressure on the main camera lens, holding the smartphone by the upper edge of the case. No notches for nails or other aids are provided. We just press on the lens, the body is squeezed out, a millimeter of plastic appears, we cling to it with a fingernail and separate the two parts further. It is clear that this is far from the most reliable solution, and only the rarity of the operation itself to replace the battery, SIM card or memory card during normal use of the smartphone helps to alleviate the fate of the camera glass.

The back panel of the Lumia 640 is installed without any problems. The memory card and SIM cards can only be replaced when the battery is disconnected. If one of the Micro-SIM cards gets stuck, it can be pushed with a fingernail or other handy tool through a special hole in the case. Judging by the fact that notches and holes for pushing SIM cards began to appear in almost every new smartphone, their jamming in the connectors is quite common.

Holes are provided for the camera lens, LED flash, main speaker and connectors on the back of the smartphone. There are repeaters for the keys. On the inside of the lid, there are three rubber dampers and a black sticker instead of an NFC antenna, which this Lumia 640 does not have.

Plastic keys located on the right side of the Lumia 640 case control the volume and power of the mobile computer. Strangely, Microsoft engineers did not provide the traditional button for controlling the camera in the Lumia 640. The shape of the keys is flat, the dimensions are sufficient for comfortable blind control of the smartphone. Additional convenience is created by a large key travel and a distinct click when pressed.

The left side of the Lumia 640 is left blank. At the top of the smartphone is a headphone hole. At the bottom is a lone Micro-USB-compatible connector for the sync and charge cable.

So, the appearance and design of the Lumia 640 left mixed impressions. With a general traditional design and execution, the current hero of the review has many minor and one major drawback in terms of exterior. Let's be honest: using a smartphone is inconvenient, it is very slippery. Lumia 640 should be immediately hidden in a case or the back panel should be replaced, for example, with a cover with a front shutter and a card holder.

Screen

The Lumia 640 screen parameters are as follows: IPS matrix, resolution 1280 × 720 pixels (HD), diagonal 5″, dot density - 293 dpi. The picture on the screen of the review hero is clear and colorful, individual pixels are invisible.

The display of the smartphone is protected from damage by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The brightness of the backlight is adjusted manually and automatically.

The Lumia 640's capacitive sensor reliably recognizes up to four simultaneous signals. If there are five or more signals, it begins to confuse them, the signals begin to disappear, and the sensor's behavior becomes inadequate.

A detailed examination using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the sections "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" Alexey Kudryavtsev.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Microsoft Lumia 640, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen on the Microsoft Lumia 640 is a bit darker (brightness in photos is 97 versus 111 on the Nexus 7). The tripling of reflected objects on the Microsoft Lumia 640 screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the outer glass (it is also a touch sensor) and the matrix surface (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of borders (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better with strong external illumination, but their repair in case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, better than the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

When displaying a white field in full screen and with manual brightness control, its maximum value was 385 cd/m², the minimum was 3.4 cd/m². The maximum value is quite high, and, given the excellent anti-reflective properties, in bright daylight, the image on the screen should be clearly distinguishable. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. With brightness control, everything is quite complicated. Firstly, on a separate page, the user can select one of three profiles with fixed brightness levels and turn on the mode with automatic brightness adjustment according to the ambient light level (the sensor is located to the right of the front camera eye).

Secondly, on another separate page (toward the end of the list of applications and settings), you can go to the next level page and there, for manual mode, adjust the brightness levels for these three profiles.

And for the automatic mode on this page, the degree of sensitivity is configured:

Further, for the automatic mode (in which, when external lighting conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases), for three conditions, we will give the screen brightness values \u200b\u200bfor three positions of the sensitivity slider (at a minimum, by default and at a maximum). In complete darkness in automatic mode, the brightness decreases to 3.2, 12 and 25 cd / m², respectively (the first value is too low, the other two provide acceptable readability from the screen in complete darkness); in an artificially lit office environment (approximately 400 lux), the brightness is set to 80, 250 and 385 cd/m² (the first two values can be considered appropriate), in a brightly lit environment (corresponding to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20000 lux or slightly more) - rises to 385 cd / m² in any case (the maximum, which is expected). As a result, this function works more or less adequately and allows the user to make adjustments to its work. Note that there is an option in the settings, the inclusion of which supposedly improves readability in bright light. It is not clear what this setting actually changes, since when it is activated, the backlight brightness does not change, and visually nothing changes on the screen either - even in bright external light, even in the dark. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

This smartphone uses an IPS type matrix. Micrographs show a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even at large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here is a photograph in which the same images are displayed on the Nexus 7 and Microsoft Lumia 640 screens, while the screen brightness is initially set to about 200 cd / m² (on a white field in full screen), and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K Perpendicular to the plane of the screens is a white field:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And a test picture:

The color reproduction is good and the colors are saturated on both screens, the color balance differs insignificantly. Now at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors have not changed much on both screens, but on the Microsoft Lumia 640, the contrast has decreased to a greater extent due to strong black bleaching. And the white box:

The brightness at an angle for both screens has noticeably decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of Microsoft Lumia 640, the brightness drop is slightly larger (brightness in photos is 227 versus 230 for Nexus 7). The black field, when deviated diagonally, is highlighted strongly and acquires a yellowish tint or remains approximately neutral gray. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same for the screens!):

And from another angle:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is good:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is normal - about 750:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 23ms (13ms on + 10ms off). The transition between 25% and 75% grayscale (according to the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 37 ms. The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with equal intervals over the numerical value of the gray tint did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows, and the exponent of the approximating power function turned out to be 2.14, which is close to the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma the curve deviates slightly from the power dependence:

Color gamut close to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components to each other:

As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the black body spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE change little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance does not matter much there, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

By going to the second (far) page with screen settings and selecting the next nesting level - page Color profile- the user can choose one of the preset profiles or a profile in which the color reproduction can be adjusted with the sliders for color temperature, hue and saturation.

The last slider slightly changes the color gamut. Pregnant Bright we get:

Pregnant natural we get:

Profile cold- increased color temperature. Profile standard described above visually and by measurements. Profile bright- increased color saturation. Go to profile additionally. Note that fine tuning using the calibrator is significantly complicated by the lack of a numerical indication of the current values and the ability to choose your own image to display at the top of the screen or even just a large area of the white field on this page. The numerical result of the correction carried out is shown in the graphs above with the caption Corr. There are some improvements, but not fundamental. You can stop at the default profile standard.

Let's summarize. The screen has a sufficiently high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is permissible to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of flicker and air gap in the layers of the screen, as well as the sRGB color gamut and good color balance. Significant disadvantages are the low stability of black to the deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. However, in general, the screen quality is high.

Sound

Smartphone Microsoft Lumia 640 is equipped with two speakers and one microphone. The phone speaker, which is located at the top of the front panel of the mobile computer, has a high volume and good sound quality. Even with strong external noise, the interlocutor's voice will be clearly distinguishable.

The main speaker of the Lumia 640 is located at the bottom of the rear panel of the smartphone. Its volume is also high, but the sound quality is average. At maximum power and with an abundance of low frequencies, it begins to wheeze noticeably.

For the main speaker, there is only one hole in the back cover of the smartphone, and even a small diameter. As a result, the speaker is very easy to muffle if you close this hole with something. The volume of the sound becomes almost zero, only vibrations continue to pass through the body of the smartphone.

The Lumia 640 did not come with a stock headset, so the quality of the smartphone's headphone output was tested in conjunction with the Sony MDR-XB30ER wired headphones. Subjectively, the sound quality was excellent. Even at the maximum comfortable volume, there were no distortions. It was not possible to reach the maximum possible level of sound power - it became scary for hearing. Thus, with good headphones, the Lumia 640 is quite suitable for listening to music in any conditions.

The sound volume in the smartphone is changed both programmatically and using two keys on the left side of the device case. To play music in the memory of a mobile computer, a regular Xbox Music audio player and the MixRadio program are installed - a streaming radio service client with the possibility of a paid subscription for unlimited listening to audio compositions.

Connected to the Lumia 640, the headphones act as an antenna for the smartphone's built-in FM radio. It doesn't work without headphones. The program for managing the receiver has a standard appearance. It can automatically search for stations, favorite stations can be collected in a list or placed on the desktop in the form of tiles. RDS technology and audio output to the main speaker of the smartphone are supported.

Camera

As already noted, the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL smartphones are equipped with different cameras. In the mobile computer that was tested, models with 8 megapixel and 0.9 megapixel sensors were installed for the main and additional cameras, respectively. The physical size of the main camera sensor is 1/4 inch. The aperture value of the optical system of the camera is f/2.2, the focal length is 28 mm. The camera is equipped with an autofocus system. An LED flash can be used for shooting in poor lighting conditions. Video is recorded at 1080p resolution.

The aperture number of the optical system of the additional camera is f/2.4. There is no auto focus system. Video recording is carried out with a resolution of 720p.

Too bad the Lumia 640 doesn't have a traditional camera button. Perhaps the manufacturer makes it clear that for photo experiments it is better to look at another smartphone model.

Shooting is controlled by the Lumia Camera app. There are no serious delays when activating the camera, the application starts in just over a second.

In addition to the Lumia Camera app, the Lumia 640 has several other photography-related programs in its memory: Lumia Stories, Lumia Moments, Lumia Photos Come to Life, Lumia Selfie, and Lumia Photo Studio.

The quality of the front camera is quite consistent with 1 megapixel.

Good field and plan sharpness. It's nice that the trees practically do not merge.

Branches and even grass are well worked out. Long-range sharpness is good.

In low light, the camera performs quite well.

Good field and plan sharpness. Not all 13-megapixel cameras are able to work out grass even in the foreground in the same way.

The camera copes with macro photography.

The text is well done.

Perhaps, the camera has no obvious shortcomings, except for the low resolution of the matrix. But she works out her 8 megapixels in full. However, we have already seen all this in previous non-top smartphones of the Lumia line: a good module and a fairly clean program. Despite the fact that the module is different here, it inherited the best qualities of its predecessors. And this is not surprising: why try to change what was already done well. The camera successfully combines good optics, a decent sensor and a reasonable moderate program. And it’s hard to find more accurate words than “just a good camera” to describe it. It is quite suitable for artistic and documentary shooting.

Software

The Microsoft Lumia 640 smartphone is running the Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 operating system with the Lumia Denim package. In the future, all devices in this series should receive a firmware update based on the upcoming Windows 10 operating system.

Traditionally for Microsoft/Nokia devices, the Lumia 640 comes pre-installed with a large amount of additional software. The list includes Microsoft applications: Office, OneNote, OneDrive, Skype. Together with the smartphone, the user receives 15 GB of OneDrive cloud storage for storing any data and another 15 GB for backing up photos. Also, when buying a smartphone, a free subscription to Office 365 services for a period of one year is provided.

On-site navigation and mapping services: Here Drive+ and Here Maps. For some reason, the Here Transit application was absent in the memory of the hero of the review, but it can be easily installed from the Microsoft application store.

For those who like to take pictures of themselves, others and the surrounding reality, smartphone developers have provided as many as five different applications.

Lumia 640 did not bypass domestic specifics: instead of the Cortana assistant, when you click on a special button, Yandex search is called up, in addition to the Facebook client, the VKontakte social network application is present in the smartphone’s memory, reading lovers can use the client of the virtual bookstore LitRes: Read!

Telephone part and communications

All variants of Lumia 640 smartphones are capable of working in 2G and 3G networks. The following frequencies for GSM networks are supported: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz. For WCDMA networks: 850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz. The maximum data download speed in the 3G network is 42.2 Mbps.

Smartphones supporting LTE networks additionally work with the 1700 MHz WCDMA band. LTE support includes the following frequency bands: LTE FDD B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B12, B17, B28, TD-LTE B38, B40. In LTE Cat 4 networks, the maximum download speed is 150 Mbps.

Smartphones with two SIM card slots work according to the Dual Standby scheme: both communication channels are active in standby mode, the second channel is turned off in phone call mode, and the smartphone is “out of reach”. Only one SIM card can work in fast 3G/4G networks, the second channel is always connected to the 2G network. You can switch between the two channels for data, messages and phone calls without powering off your smartphone.

Tests of the Lumia 640 instance that was tested showed reliable operation of the cellular communication module. The 3G network was defined both in Moscow and in the Moscow region. The data transfer rate in the WCDMA network turned out to be significantly lower than the declared maximum theoretical, but this is normal for busy cellular networks in the metropolitan area.

The Bluetooth 4.0 module in the Lumia 640 has a large number of work profiles. In conjunction with the Sony MW1 wireless stereo headset, two of them were tested: A2DP and HSP. The support turned out to be at the highest level: playing music with the broadcast of track names, answering phone calls with the transfer of not only the phone number, but also the name of the interlocutor from the contact list of the mobile computer.

In a home Wi-Fi network with a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND router as an access point, the smartphone demonstrated a data exchange rate of 40 Mbps.

Lumia 640 models with LTE support are also equipped with NFC. The smartphone that was in the editorial office with support only for 3G networks was deprived of it.

But all variants of the Lumia 640 interact with satellite navigation systems in the same way. The smartphone receiver receives a signal from GPS, Glonass and BeiDou satellites. A-GPS technology helps you find satellite signals and determine the approximate location of your smartphone based on data from cellular base stations and Wi-Fi networks.

Performance

The basis for the entire Lumia 640 family of smartphones was the well-known Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 platform, which is used in countless devices. There is no exact data on which chip modification is installed here - most likely, it is MSM8926. The platform includes four ARM Cortex-A7 cores with a maximum operating frequency of 1.2 GHz and an Adreno 305 GPU. The chip is manufactured using a 28 nm process technology.

RAM in all modifications of the Lumia 640 is set to 1 GB, flash memory - 8 GB. Of these, 3.3 GB is occupied by the operating system and pre-installed applications. Additional space for music, photos and videos can be obtained using a microSD memory card, cards up to 128 GB are supported. There is no support for external USB drives in the Lumia 640.

Introduced almost two years ago, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC was originally intended for the mid-range smartphone segment. In the time that has passed since the premiere, its performance and capabilities have been well studied, there is no need to wait for any revelations here. Unfortunately, in all respects it is inferior to modern SoCs even at a budget level, but, as the Lumia 640 example shows, its capabilities are enough for new devices even in 2015. In fact, most of the current line of Nokia/Microsoft Lumia devices use this platform in its various variations.

Let's see what marks the hero of this review received in performance tests.

There is nothing new in the test results, we still have the same well-known platform.

The GFXBench graphics benchmark results table shows two values for each of the tests. This is due to the fact that in onscreen mode the application generates an image with a resolution of 720p, and in offscreen mode - 1080p.

Let's move on to testing the speed of JavaScript processing by browsers built into smartphones.

Positioning

Microsoft has suddenly realized that they do not know how to sell smartphones, and Windows Phone is not popular. By the end of 2014, sales of Lumia smartphones plummeted in all countries of the world, their share in the smartphone market dropped to 3 percent, these are the minimum values for the company. The figures say the obvious thing: Windows Phone devices are not in demand on the market, their audience is minimal. Inexpensive models are in the greatest demand, and in 2015 the company's strategy is to produce as many cheap devices as possible. Not just the most inexpensive smartphones, as was the case in previous years, when the Lumia 520/521 were the backbone of sales and occupied the lion's share of the Windows Phone market, but attractively priced models in every price segment. A good undertaking, which, in theory, could play a role if Android was inside the devices. But as we have already seen, in practice, Windows Phone is the brake that exists for sales of the Lumia line. And it's impossible to remove it. You can change the name of Windows Phone to simply Windows, but it is impossible to eradicate the unsuccessful interface, the wretchedness of the software and additional programs. As well as convincing people why they need it. The mass consumer does not enter into controversy with Windows Phone apologists or company employees, he acts more effectively - does not buy their devices.

The 640 comes in two forms - the regular 640 with a 5-inch screen and 8-megapixel camera in a glossy body, and the 640 XL with a 5.7-inch screen, 13-megapixel Zeiss camera and slightly larger battery.

Microsoft fell to the very bottom, because they understand that such models will not have noticeable sales, and therefore, it is necessary to create the maximum possible number of variations. Not one model with verified characteristics, but a whole set of devices. I'm afraid that it will be difficult for an ordinary person to navigate them, the calculation is based on the fact that they will buy something by chance from all this diversity. If earlier Nokia proceeded from the real needs of the market and pretended that they were trying to create something, now there is not even a hint of this. They produce many models, each of which is designed for a minimum sales volume, and due to their number, the total circulation will increase. In any case, the total circulation figure is so insignificant that it does not deserve consideration. Let's see how many models there are in the 640 series. So, for a conventional device, this is 640 3G DS (9,990 rubles), 640 LTE (10,990 rubles), 640 LTE DS (10,990 rubles). Already at the level of the Russian market, a failure in the planning of the line is visible, for example, the version for two SIM-cards costs exactly the same as the regular version with LTE. Why? The answer lies in the fact that one of them is superfluous and not needed. In the XL version, the same is the usual XL (it is not available in Russia), XL DS (14,990 rubles), XL LTE, XL LTE DS. For Russia, only one model 640 XL was chosen, since others would create confusion and would have to be sold for the same money.

Who is the 640 XL suitable for? This is a person who is looking for a phablet, that is, a device with a large screen, not very selective in his preferences, ready to sacrifice almost everything, but to receive, as it seems to him, a profitable offer. In Microsoft, this device is loaded with a subscription to Office 365 (personal license for one year and for one PC, tablet, phone). Another of the goodies - 60 minutes of calls to fixed numbers in Skype.

All in all, this is not a device to expand the number of Windows Phone fans, but rather for those who, for some reason, brew in this environment and think they made a good choice. Marginal device for a small stratum of users. It is impossible to seriously consider it as a competitor to any Android smartphones, it does not have any serious and noticeable advantages.

Design, dimensions, controls

I like phablets, my main device is Note 4, and the device from Microsoft is very similar in size - 157.9x81.5x9 mm, weight - 171 grams. In the hand, especially for men, it is quite comfortable and lies well.

Compared to Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The case is made of polycarbonate, it is rough to the touch, very pleasant. I chose a white device, orange Lumia got me a little tired. On the first day, it turned out that the case is not just easily soiled, everything sticks to it. Paint from jeans (where?), money lying nearby, and so on - the case is painted, and then you have to rub it to remove stains.

It's good that there are other colors - blue, black and orange, they are less prone to this trouble due to the color. Even though they are dyed.

At the top end there is a 3.5 mm jack, at the bottom there is a regular microUSB connector. On the right side is a paired volume rocker, right there is an on/off button. The speaker output is on the rear surface, not far from the camera and LED flash.

It is easy to open the device, the case is pulled out towards itself, it's like a cover. The design, tested on many models, is very reliable. Inside you will see the battery, as well as two microSIM slots plus a slot for a memory card.

From an engineering point of view, there are no complaints about the device, it is quite good.

Screen

The usual IPS-matrix with a diagonal of 5.7 inches, resolution - 1280x720 pixels (259 dpi), covered with Corning Gorilla Glass. For its price segment, it is quite a worthy screen, which does not have any special differences from many models, there are no outstanding characteristics, but the display will suit most. The buttons in the device are on-screen. It is impossible to say something separately about the screen - it is normal and familiar.

Battery

Battery 3000 mAh Li-Ion, standby time - up to 39 days, talk time - up to 23.7 / 31.3 hours (3G / 2G), music playback - up to 102 hours, Wi-Fi - up to 13 hours, video - until 11.7 o'clock. In real life, two days of work is quite an achievable indicator with a fairly active use of the device, it can be even three days. The device is slightly inferior to the Lumia 1320 in this parameter, it had a 3500 mAh battery. But in general, everything is fine, the operating time for this model turned out to be worthy and favorably distinguishes the device from classmates.

Communication options

Standard set of protocols - Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 4.0 (no LE support) - a full set of standard profiles, WCDMA. As you can see, the device cannot boast of anything special or unusual.

Chipset, memory, performance

Typical solution from Microsoft, inside Snapdragon 400, 4 cores up to 1.2 GHz. The interface works fast enough, which is also typical for such solutions. The amount of RAM - 1 GB, built-in - 8 GB, memory cards - up to 128 GB. In synthetic tests, here are the results.

Camera

The front camera does not take very good pictures, despite the fact that it has a resolution of 5 megapixels.

But the main camera of 13 megapixels with the inscription Zeiss should have pleased, but since this is a budget solution, it did not please me very much. On the screen, the pictures look good, but as soon as you start to understand what is happening, you see that the white balance lives its own life, with pictures involving the sky, clouds almost never draw correctly, often they just disappear. There are a lot of such “little things”, the optimal frame mode partially corrects the situation, several pictures are taken in it. But overall, it's pretty depressing. But Nokia focused on cameras, however, almost all the key employees who were involved in this area went to work in other companies.

See how this device shoots.

Software - Windows Phone 8.1

Phone on Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2. A huge number of functions have been added to the system - now in the “Settings” section there is a division by points (!!!), and individual settings can also be placed on the main screen. When typing, you can add your own text shortcuts for quick input. And that's all for Update 2. I'm constantly amazed at the speed with which Microsoft is adding new features - a teaspoon per hour seems like the first cosmic speed compared to this. No, these guys are really the fastest on the planet - they introduced a separation of settings in the menu, although in Windows 10 there is a completely different menu! Well done guys, keep it up.

Smartphone Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is a "descendant" of Nokia Lumia 1320. The company pursued the same goal - to release a phone with a large diagonal at an affordable price. Lumia 1320 was a decent device in its time. Can the same be said for the Lumia 640 XL?

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL Phone Reviews

The new Lumia 640 XL smartphone will cost about $200. In turn, we get a phone with an impressive design and a 5.7-inch display with a pixel density of 720 per inch. The device is running Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 with Lumia Denim. The phone, as expected, will receive a Windows 10 update.

The device runs on a Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor with a clock speed of 1.2 GHz, has 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded using a microSD card. A 3000 mAh battery is installed. The front camera has 5 megapixels, and the main one has 13.

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL - Non-premium phone

And it feels amazing as soon as you pick it up. The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL has a very simple design and a lightweight plastic body. In addition, the whole smartphone is well balanced, even long-term use does not cause discomfort. Also, the device creates a feeling of strength, although it did not pass the crash test.

The body of the phone is interchangeable. This is very convenient, since you can easily change the color of the device if you are tired of the old one. The battery can also be removed and replaced if necessary. The smartphone fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, the developers have chosen a very pleasant to the touch plastic.

The power buttons and volume controls are located on the right side of the case. There were no problems with them. The headphone jack is on the top, and the microUSB port is on the bottom.

The Lumia 640 XL has a 5.7-inch HD screen with a density of 259 pixels per square inch. The screen received a solid "good" rating. There were no complaints about the quality of color or sharpness. But on the other hand, the display is also nothing special.

Working with one hand with the phone did not work because of its large dimensions. With Windows 10, this will be much easier, but with the “eight”, freeing one hand will not work.

Lumia 640 XL performance

Controlling the Microsoft XL Lumia 640 with Windows Phone 8.1 is easy enough. The device works perfectly with the OS, and the user-friendly interface simplifies any operations. It was not possible to find any special defects in the system. Confused only pre-installed applications. They look somewhat outdated compared to competitors.

Windows Phone is praised for its good optimization of weak components, as can be seen in the case of the Lumia 640 XL. Although the Snapdragon 400 processor and 1 GB of RAM are certainly quite low figures, the phone did not slow down, it quickly responded to commands, even there were almost no problems with some 3D games. Although, of course, they will look better on devices with a Snapdragon 8xx processor.

Daily use

A feature of smartphones is the "voracity" of the battery. The Lumia 640 XL, with a sub-high resolution display, 3000mA battery, and a Snapdragon 400 processor, performs quite well.

When testing the smartphone, the power saving function was not turned on, everything was set to default - screen brightness, wireless connections, notifications, etc. During the day we took several pictures, listened to music for an hour, typed messages, read notifications, and surfed the Internet for a total of at least 1.5 hours, plus we used GPS. The phone confidently lasted about 12 hours. In the case of intensive battery load (YouTube, games with 3D graphics), the working time dropped to 6-7 hours. This is a very good result.

There were no problems with 3G, LTE and GSM. The sound quality is also more than satisfactory. There is only one drawback - catastrophically little built-in memory. If you frequently take pictures or install a large number of applications, it ends almost instantly. But this can be fixed with a microSD card.

Camera Microsoft Lumia 640

The Lumia 640 XL takes great pictures. Now this budget smartphone uses solutions that were once used in flagship camera phones.

The camera of the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is really good. It is actually equipped with a very good LED flash, the quality of the photos is at a fairly high level, provided there is good lighting and even in cloudy weather. Night shots are somewhat inferior in quality, but they are also very acceptable.

Outcome

The Lumia 640 XL is not a phone that deserves a special scolding for anything, keeping in mind its price. But this is not a smartphone that is worth a lot of attention.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL "simply" lives up to its promises, which is a good thing in itself. This is a functional phablet for little money. It is well designed, has ergonomic hardware, and its software is very user-friendly and refined, although the flaws in third-party applications are noticeable. The phone has a decent display and battery life.

However, there's not a lot of built-in storage and a rather average camera, but few smartphones in this class offer anything better. XL LTE Lumia 640, simple, massive equipment for the thrifty consumer. Nothing less, but nothing more.

Lumia line. The three in the middle of the model numbers is replaced by a four, and the inscription "Microsoft" replaces "Nokia", borrowing the font and color from it. Otherwise, Lumia backgrounds are still easy to distinguish from competitors.

The new 640 LTE and 640 LTE DUAL SIM in the price range are two steps lower than the flagship, both not yet announced, and last year. It is not yet known whether the 8xx line will continue, but there are rumors that Microsoft will abandon the cheap Lumia - and then the six hundred and fortieth series will become almost the most accessible on WP10. But these are all rumors. Much more interesting is the fact that, in addition to the above-mentioned devices, among the new products there is also 640 XL DUAL SIM - a big guy with a 5.7-inch screen at a reasonable price. We'll talk about him today.

We have a white model on the test, but you can also find black, blue and red in stores. In fact, the smartphone itself is black - it is only inserted into a colored cover, so in theory you can buy a whole set of such covers and change them according to your mood. But only in theory - this is still a case, you can’t officially buy it.

It's a pity: if you use the 640 XL without a case, you'll quickly want to change the case. No, the new Lumia is not afraid of scratches - strong rough plastic will scratch whatever you want. But any dirt and dust sticks to the matte surface as magnetized. The white case in this case is the most losing one.

Another problem is the shape of the device, or rather its edges. They are practically not rounded, and if the Lumia 930 seemed uncomfortable to you, then you simply cannot use the 640 XL. Yes, the device resembles a tablet with a 5.7-inch screen and impressive bezels, but one way or another, it is customary to use a smartphone with one hand, and here it is extremely inconvenient to do so. By the way, the dimensions of the device are 157.9 × 81.5 × 9 mm, and it weighs 171 grams - about the same as the rest of the tablet phones.

The buttons - and there are three of them here - are habitually displayed on the right side. The first is the volume rocker, and a little lower is the screen on / off button. One could say that at least they are convenient to use, but the sharp corners of the case make it difficult to perform the usual actions with one hand. The rest of the smartphone is controlled using the on-screen buttons. At the top is a 3.5mm headphone jack, at the bottom is a micro-USB input.

The back wall is also ascetic: a camera eye, the inscriptions "Microsoft" (larger) and "Zeiss" (smaller), a flash and a slot for a speaker. A smartphone lying on something soft is hard to hear, but many “middle peasants” suffer from this
