Phone highway u6. Huawei Y6 (2018) smartphone test: high-quality assembly without any special claims

Smartphone for $200? - To you in that department where more and more run up the eyes. Manufacturers are trying very hard to succeed here, because the price segment is really very massive. There are more angry and more glamorous here. Today we have a device from the second category. Let's quickly see what kind of animal it is.

What is it?

Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is a large (display diagonal 5.7”) budget Android smartphone in a plastic case. At present, you can not add that it is “almost full screen” (18x9 aspect ratio), but it is important to note that without “bangs / monobrows”.

Why is he interesting?

First, we need to clarify that the word Prime in the title is very important. If we remove it, we get a completely different model. The younger and already clearly budget: 2 GB of RAM, 16 permanent memory, without a fingerprint scanner, and with a worse front camera. But without external differences, except for the golden version of the body color (black and blue are also found). It was he who came across to us: it is immediately clear that this is a model with the Prime title.

Here's something a little more solid. The screen resolution, as in the younger model, is 1440x720, but the RAM is already 3 GB, and the permanent one is 32 GB. At the heart of the device platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 (MSM8917) - a quad-core processor with a frequency of up to 1.4 GHz. 3000 mAh battery, microUSB connector, fingerprint scanner on the back panel… Boring? Prime also has more interesting features. Frontal flash, a full-fledged tray for 2 SIM + 1 MicroSD, the function of unlocking the device with your face, double ... Stop. It's not double. It seemed? Let's take a closer look.

What's in the box?

Nothing extra in the box. In addition to the smartphone itself - a charger, a cable and a paper clip. Jokes aside, but a paper clip is a really necessary thing. There is still no standard for the SIM tray ejection holes, and a clerical pin that can easily open the tray in the iPhone does not fit into the opening of the Huawei Y6 Prime, verified. So don't lose your paperclip. And be careful with the card tray, it's as long as a French baguette.

From the pleasant - a neat protective film is already pasted on the screen for constant wear. From the unpleasant: it is more like a film than glass, and it scratches quite easily. And also - no headset in the kit (but it will be in commercial deliveries, I just had no luck with the sample).

What does it look like?

More expensive than it is. Although this is a subjective assessment. But it is precisely because of the appearance that it may seem that the camera here is double. Its lens and flash are covered with a black elongated module, exactly the same, behind which it is customary to put two lenses in more expensive models (the same Y7 Prime). But here he is alone. In addition to this module, on the rear panel there is a “dot” of the second microphone and a traditional round fingerprint scanner.

The bezels around the edges of the screen are quite thin. At the top of the front panel there is an LED indicator, a light sensor (which pretends to be a second front camera), the front camera itself, a speaker and an inconspicuous selfie flash. The front camera is also used to unlock the smartphone with face recognition. After pressing the power button and before the face is recognized, you can see the corresponding inscription on the screen.

Under the screen there is only a mirror logo of the manufacturer, all control buttons are drawn on the screen itself. On the bottom side - the most banal (like everyone else) round slots for a microphone and a speaker on the sides of the MicroUSB connector. On the right is the power button and volume rocker, on the left is only the card tray, and on the top end there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack. So far, fortunately, only flagships have abandoned it, as well as MicroUSB - in favor of Type C.

Everything is plastic, but assembled to the conscience, nothing creaks or dangles. The roundness of the forms and the glossy mirrored bezel around the perimeter of the device generally make it a kind of glamorous little thing. At least this white and gold version. For some reason, I remembered the iPhone of the first three generations, their polished metal edging made a similar impression.

How good is the screen?

Once upon a time, a 5.7-inch screen was considered huge, in modern times it is just big. For some reason, the programs that display the characteristics of the device are synchronously confused and determine the diagonal at 5.9 ”, but the ruler confirms: 5.7. Despite the relatively low resolution, the pixels are invisible, with viewing angles everything is fine. The maximum brightness is 345.131 cd/m2, the black field brightness is 0.393 cd/m2, and the contrast ratio is 878:1. Good performance, but the color gamut let us down a bit and the screen is a bit cold. However, this is not the first time we have encountered such a feature of displays from Huawei. Let me remind you that the measurements were carried out with the default parameters, if desired, the color can be corrected in the settings.

What about performance, autonomy, sound?

The Snapdragon 425 processor is an old and proven option for budget employees. They have been built on it for more than one generation. Here and Xiaomi with the Redmi 4 and 5 A series, and the Samsung J-series, and the E5-e Moto, and many other models. Performance is predictable. In tests, the numbers are depressingly low, but in real life there is not much to complain about. The interface works smartly, simple toys work without problems. Something a little heavier like NFS: No Limits or Minecraft (a world with a lot of objects) also goes, although not as fast as demanding players would like.

Let me remind you that the Prime model has only 32 GB of permanent and 3 GB of RAM. Normal for the modern average. Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz only), Bluetooth, GPS/GLONASS are standard. Excesses like NFC or an infrared remote control are not allowed. The most attentive readers will object that there should be NFC, but this chip is not in our modification with the ATU-L31 index. And it is available only in the ATU-L11 version, I can’t say anything about its deliveries to our market. But I can wish Huawei to buy modern Wi-Fi modules as soon as possible, because this story with the lack of support for the five-GHz range in almost all devices except flagships has been dragging on for a long time and it would be time to solve it.

But there is an FM radio. By the way, let's note the sound. The marketing campaign for this device mentions a particularly loud speaker delivering "up to 88 dB". Indeed, subjectively, it sounds louder than average. At the same time, it does not wheeze at maximum volume and quite accurately fulfills frequencies, which is higher. Bass transfer is worse for obvious reasons. But all the same, for scoring gatherings in the absence of other speakers, it will do better than most “classmate devices”.

Although this figure of 88 decibels haunts, let's check. We take a device for comparison (in our case, it is the iPhone 8), on it and on the experimental one, we alternately launch the same pieces from the repertoire of Metallica and AC / DC. We measure the noise level with a third smartphone using a software sound level meter from the Smart Tools package from a distance of 2 cm from the speaker. We count the average values and compare. Y6 Prime at the peak gave out 84 dB, on average - 79. The opponent got 83 and 78, respectively. Dry numbers say that the speaker is hardly a head louder than everyone around. But it's still loud. And you can make it even louder in the "Party" mode, for which you will need at least one more of the same smartphone: they will "sing in chorus".

The battery is average, at 3000 mAh, this is a common capacity. The device removed from charging in the morning by 10 pm shows 50-60% of the charge. With an average level of use. Just do not ask what is included in it, you will still be wrong. If you use less intensively, you can do without charging for two days. Even more is possible, especially if you use the maximum power saving mode. This feature, familiar from other Huawei devices, turns the smartphone into a dialer, turning off everything secondary and reducing the brightness of the screen backlight to a minimum. In an extreme situation, when there is absolutely nowhere to recharge, it can help, it is useful.

What about firmware and interface?

Here we have Android 8.0 Oreo with the EMUI 8 shell. Nothing radically new, desktops and folders are like in iPhones, like most Chinese competitors. However, those who wish can put applications on a separate screen, such an opportunity is in the settings. EMUI has its own versions of the popular functions of cleaning up memory, reducing the visible area of the screen for one-handed operation, and optimizing performance. For each of the two SIM-cards, you can configure a separate ringtone, call forwarding settings, allow or prohibit data transfer in general or only in roaming. There are a number of interesting little things like the "pocket" mode (which increases the volume of the call when the phone is in your pocket), the ability to end the call with the power button, or the bluetooth tethering mode (in addition to the usual Wi-Fi hotspot function). There is a vision protection mode (blue filter), it can also be turned on automatically according to a schedule (but you cannot say "turn on after sunset", as in MIUI). I will not dwell on the shell in detail, it was recently written about in reviews or.

The top curtain with notifications seems to be the same as everyone else. But in Huawei devices, it can traditionally be pulled out without touching the screen, but by swiping down from the top of the fingerprint scanner. And tap on it - clear the read notifications in this curtain. Personally, this solution seems very convenient to me: every time you switch from a Huawei smartphone to another device with the same rear-mounted scanner, at first you curse at a non-working function. A number of types of special alerts that are irrelevant to our market are supported: emergency situations, "serious danger", AMBER alert and non-switchable (!) "presidential notices". It is interesting how often the latter come to the owners of a smartphone in its homeland.

Another feature of the device is unlocking by face recognition. The trend set in the iPhone X has already reached the $200 segment. This function works quite stably and at any angle, that is, the phone can be held upside down, the main thing is that the face falls into the frame of the front camera. But recognition does not always happen instantly, you should get used to it. If you grimace, the face is not recognized. I don’t have a twin brother, I couldn’t check this aspect of security.

How is the camera?

As we already understood, the main camera is single. It has a 13-megapixel matrix, while the front camera has an 8-megapixel sensor. Both cameras are equipped with flashes (both are also single), for fans of self-portraits, the presence of a backlight on the front panel is a clear plus. For them, there is also a "perfect selfie" function. In this mode, you can correct the oval of the face, the size of the eyes and the lighting parameters. In my opinion, a good way to make yourself look like an alien, nothing more. There is already a traditional setting for correcting skin defects (called "decoration mode") and stickers ("watermark") with the date, place, weather or all sorts of pictures, which are now proudly called "augmented reality elements". The shooting interface is quite simple, it does not indulge in an abundance of functions. The maximum video resolution is FullHD, there is no slow motion mode. I also did not find a time-lapse, but there is a panorama.

Huawei, as usual, in its repertoire: "re-released" the existing model, calling it differently, and introduced the device to the international market. Huawei Enjoy 5, Honor Holly 2 Plus, Honor 5X Play, Honor 4C Pro are the same smartphone. Only now it is called Huawei Y6 Pro. Announced in 2015, but still sold to this day.

Y6 Pro is a budget model, but interesting due to its solid battery capacity and a decent amount of RAM. The minimum price that we managed to find in online stores is $ 135. Well-known and promoted stores sell goods a little more expensive - for 155 USD. Prices shown are approximate and valid at the time of writing this review.

The smartphone received a good filling, as for a budget device.

Design, buttons and connectors

There are no surprises in terms of design: a typical plastic rectangle with rounded corners. With a thickness of 9.7 mm and a weight of 160 g, the case owes a capacious battery. The height of the product is 143.1 mm, the width is 71.8 mm.

The sloping back panel is covered with a diagonal pattern that you can feel with your fingers.

Not far from the front and speaker grille is an event indicator light. Most of the elements on the case received a classic, familiar arrangement.

The power/volume buttons are on the edge on the right, the multimedia speaker and MicroUSB are on the bottom.

3.5mm audio jack on top.
But the navigation buttons are programmatically placed on the display. The model is available in three colors: gold, white and gray.

CPU

Since this model focuses on autonomy, an economical 64-bit MediaTek MT6735P processor with a Mali-T720 video chip was installed, as the information says on the official website and most reviewers. But by installing the CPU-Z applicationit became clear that the smartphone has a different chipset, namely MT6582 with Mali-400 MP video chip. And this is a weaker chipset. The difference in Antutu test is 10,000 points: MT6735P scores 35,000; MT6582 - 25,000 points. Why is this happening?

But the thing is that in addition to different names in different regions, a smartphone called Huawei Y6 Pro is also listed on the official website as a smartphone with a more powerful chipset than it actually is. There are many build numbers, the main ones are:

  • HUAWEI Y6 Pro TIT-U02 - MediaTek MT6582 + Mali-400MP2
  • TIT-AL00 (Enjoy 5 and other models) - MT6735P + Mali-T720
  • TIT-L01 (Honor 4C Pro) - MT6735P + Mali-T720

In Ukraine, the HUAWEI Y6 Pro TIT-U02 model is on sale, it is without LTE and with a weaker chipset.

When purchasing, go to Settings > About phone > Build number, and make sure which device you are purchasing. Due to incorrect information on the official website, confusion may occur in Ukraine that a device with a MT6735P + Mali-T720 chipset is being sold, but in fact a weaker chip.

Because of this, many bloggers wrote incorrect information about the smartphone, which is sold in Ukraine. Hello, how do you hear?

Someone complains that resource-intensive games lag and freeze. It's just not always necessary to rely on standard optimization for a specific hardware. In modern games, it is possible to independently set the appropriate settings. As a rule, with such iron you need to focus on medium and low parameters.

Memory

The smartphone has 2 GB of RAM. An excellent indicator, as for a budget model. For an unpretentious user, this is enough for the eyes to run several applications at the same time.

Built-in memory - 16 GB. We subtract what the system takes, and we get 10.55 GB of free space. There you can load applications, some games, and there will still be a place. And if not, it's not scary, a removable drive comes to the rescue. In the settings, you can select it as the main place to install applications. The maximum size of a supported flash drive is 128 GB, a separate slot is provided for it.

Offline work

As mentioned earlier, the main feature of this device can be considered a high battery capacity: 4000 mAh. In mixed usage scenarios, excellent battery life is demonstrated. If you thoroughly take up your smartphone, turn on wireless data transfer, and torment it with the Internet, calls, watching videos, shooting on the camera, it will easily withstand the day in extreme stress mode.

With more moderate use, the battery usually lasts for two days. If you turn off wireless networks and run FullHD video at full brightness, it will play continuously for up to 10 hours. And it takes 2 hours to fully recharge.

Like other devices from this manufacturer, there is an advanced power consumption setting mode. It allows you to keep control over the charge consumption. Up to limiting functionality for the sake of additional hours of battery life. You can also charge other mobile devices by connecting to the MicroUSB connector.

Camera

The main camera allows you to take pictures with a resolution of 13 MP. The aperture value is f/2.0. There is autofocus, fast working during the day, and a medium-brightness LED flash. The camera application is quite functional, while being accessible in development. You can change exposure values and adjust focus on the fly. It is possible to adjust the white balance, contrast, ISO, saturation, sharpness.

In ideal lighting conditions, the automation correctly selects the white balance. The resulting images have good contrast and good color reproduction. The overall level of detail is normal, and at close range - even good.

If you look closely at daytime photos, you can see the graininess and noise. However, we will make a discount on the budget of the device.

When creating panoramas, the frames stick together well, the “seams” are imperceptible. The smartphone copes best with subject shooting, you can achieve a beautiful bokeh effect (see box above). Indoors, under artificial lighting, detail is reduced, but the camera is doing well.

In room

Another indoor shot:

Even at night, you can get a more or less acceptable frame quality.

Unexpectedly: the stock camera allows you to record videos in a maximum of HD (1280 x 720) resolution. The quality is also dull: there is not enough color saturation and picture clarity. The 5 MP front module is wide-angle (84 degrees), so not only the face of the smartphone owner is placed in the frame. The quality of the resulting photos is quite acceptable.

Taking a picture with a selfie camera

Video recording is possible in HD resolution.

Display

Diagonal 5 inches, resolution 1280 x 720, IPS matrix. The pixel density is 293 dpi. For a budget employee - a classic of the genre. Image quality is expectedly good, both in terms of contrast and color reproduction. By tilting the device in different directions, the user will not notice a strong fading of the image, or inversion of colors on the screen. The minimum brightness level is quite comfortable for using the device in complete darkness.

When exposed to direct sunlight, alas, the margin of brightness is not enough, and the contents of the screen fade. Whoever lacks image saturation, or vice versa, prefers calmer tones, the ability to adjust the color temperature will come in handy. The touchscreen is able to recognize up to 5 simultaneous clicks.

There is also an unpleasant moment (it does not appear for everyone), sometimes the touchscreen has some misunderstandings with the sensitivity to pressing. Therefore, you have to either “poke” into it several times, or press harder than usual. Usually, to fix the situation, you need to find the "Accessibility" section in the settings menu. There will be an item "Sensitive mode", and you need to activate it. However, no such problems were noticed in our smartphone.

Networking

Under the back cover there are slots for 2 micro-SIM cards. The smartphone is designed to work in 2G/3G networks. WiFi single band - 2.4 GHz. The Bluetooth version is 4.0. All communications work flawlessly.

Responsible for navigation and geopositioning: GPS, GLONASS, A-GPS. Processors from MediaTek have not earned the best reputation due to known problems with navigation. However, Huawei Y6 Pro surprises with the excellent performance of GPS and GLONASS. It “clings” to satellites very quickly, a cold start in just 15 seconds. With a hot start, all navigation systems are ready for operation in less than 10 seconds.

Sound

The main speaker is average in volume, normal in sound quality. Comparable to many other budget models. The speaker is normal, does not "shout", but is not quiet either. The volume margin when listening to music on headphones is not the most impressive. If the environment is noisy, you have to raise the volume level to the maximum value. Enthusiasts have found a solution to this problem by making changes to the engineering menu.

Software part

The operating system uses Android 5.1. The shell is EMUI 3.1 Lite, outwardly radically different from the stock Android interface. The light version of the shell is simple without additional chips. Only the most important and useful proprietary applications remain. The full version of EMUI is usually installed on smartphones that are more expensive and more powerful.

There is information from the manufacturer's support service that work is underway to update the firmware to Android 6. Naturally, no one names specific dates.

Additional features

  • A smartphone can be turned into a Power Bank by selecting the appropriate option in the settings section.
  • In emergency situations, you can discreetly activate video recording, even when the screen is locked. To do this, it is enough to make a predetermined number of clicks on the volume button.

Advantages and disadvantages

Pros:

  • good autonomy;
  • excellent work of navigation modules;
  • good photo opportunities;
  • separate slots for SIM and MicroSD.

Minuses:

  • low resolution and quality of the recorded video;
  • problems with the sensitivity of the wheelbarrow;
  • non-removable battery in a plastic case.

Who is a smartphone for?

For those who are looking for an inexpensive dual SIM 3G/4G device with a decent battery, a decent camera, and fast and stable navigation.

Our review of the Huawei Y6 Pro smartphone

On the one hand, in its price category, the smartphone is not bad in most respects, and has quite significant advantages. On the other hand, the nuances described in the review with the resolution of videos and a buggy sensor are perceived as nonsense. Such ridiculous and obvious mistakes should not be made, despite the fact that this is a budget model. However, there are owners of Huawei Y6 Pro who do not care about the quality of video recording, and they solved the problem with the screen by increasing its sensitivity to touch.

Smartphone Huawei Y6 Prime 2018 is a rare example of a budget gadget that combines premium features, stylish appearance and affordable price.

Laconic and stylish

The smartphone received a spectacular and practical design. The strict plastic case with a matte finish is complemented by a chrome frame, which gives the gadget both a classic and modern look. The screen, as it should be in 2018, is FullView with thin frames, with glossy 2.5D glass. There is nothing superfluous on the front panel, since all navigation buttons are on the screen.

High build quality is complemented by user comfort. The smartphone has an extremely pleasant ergonomics, which is achieved by rounded edges and corners. Dimensions also contribute to convenient one-handed operation: with a height of 152.4 mm, a width of 73 mm and a thickness of 7.8 mm, the gadget weighs only 150 grams. So the hand does not get tired even after many hours of using the device.

Full palette of colors

Y6 Prime 2018 received a 5.7-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1440 by 720 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. The display is characterized by high contrast, good detail and natural color reproduction.

Even in sunny weather, all information remains readable without losing color tints, so you can see the smallest details of on-screen interfaces. In addition, the already developed technology of eye protection is used here. You can adjust colors and contrast depending on the time of day, adjust the color temperature, and change the screen resolution.

Iron, time-tested

The smartphone runs on one of the most popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 quad-core chipsets clocked at 1.4GHz. This “pebble” model has proven itself in several generations of budget smartphones, providing high performance in multitasking mode. This SoC is also distinguished by excellent energy efficiency indicators, due to which the 3000 mAh battery is able to hold out at maximum modes for a whole day.

The Adreno 308 3D accelerator runs games consistently at medium and high settings. And 2 GB of RAM is more than enough for everyday tasks, as well as for running heavy applications. If you do not have enough internal memory of 16 GB, you can additionally buy a 256 GB card, especially since there is a separate slot for it.

Particular attention is paid to the smartphone sound quality. The audio processing system, combined with a powerful speaker, provides clear and loud sound up to 88 dB. At the same time, you can synchronize two gadgets via Bluetooth, creating a truly surround sound music party.

A camera that doesn't miss a single detail

The 13-megapixel main photo module of the smartphone features fast focusing and excellent detail in good light. And at dusk, HDR mode will come to the rescue.

Particular emphasis in the smartphone is on the quality of the selfie. The 8 MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture, in addition to the standard settings, is equipped with the “Perfect Selfie” function. With it, you can fine-tune facial contours, eye size, skin tone, and ambient lighting. Also, the finished photo can be decorated with cute stickers.

Also, the capabilities of the front module are expanded due to the face recognition function, which allows you to unlock the smartphone screen.

Huawei Y6 2018 is a budget class smartphone with a large “elongated” display. The device is equipped with a special front camera, which is designed to unlock the face. The official announcement of the gadget took place in April 2018.

Appearance and ergonomics

Huawei U6 2018 received a standard rectangular case with rounded corners. There is a metal frame around the perimeter, which not only makes the smartphone more durable, but also very stylish. The back cover is very practical, as there are practically no marks left on it. If prints remain, they will quickly be removed.

There is a large screen in front, and with minimal frames around, so there was no place for navigation buttons here - they have become virtual. Only the company logo remained under the display. The back part was left almost entirely empty. The only exception is a separate horizontal unit with the main camera and flash. At the bottom there is a multimedia speaker, and there is also a microUSB port.

The top edge received a headphone jack and a microphone. It is really convenient to use the device due to its low weight and optimal proportions. Inside the device is a 3000 mAh rechargeable battery. Available colors: gold, blue and black. Dimensions: height - 152.4 mm, thickness - 7.8 mm, width - 73 mm, weight - 150 g.

Display

The Y6 2018 features a 5.7-inch FullView screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The S-IPS matrix has a resolution of 1440 by 720 pixels. The display is covered with 2.5D-glass, which reliably protects it from scratches. Such a screen has rich colors with a bias towards warm shades. The color temperature and some other parameters can be adjusted independently. The margin of brightness is not very large, but in many cases it is comfortable to use the display. Since IPS technology is used here, the viewing angles are close to the maximum values. Moreover, the colors almost do not change under the slope.

Hardware and performance

Smartphone U6 2018 got a Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor with a clock frequency of 1400 MHz. There is an Adreno 308 graphics accelerator. The memory can be expanded up to 256 GB using microSD cards. Initially, the user has about 16 GB of free space, while the amount of RAM is 2 GB.

Immediately after the purchase, the device runs on the Android 8.0 operating system along with the EMUI 8.0 shell. For example, in the AnTuTu v6 test, the gadget scores about 35,000 points, in Geekbench 4 - 1800 points (multi-core mode), Ice Storm Unlimited in 3DMark - about 10,000 points. Performance in games cannot be called high, and some projects will even run with minimal graphic settings. But in everyday tasks, performance is still enough. The interface functions quickly, there are no serious brakes during the operation of the gadget.

Communication and sound

The budget model Huawei Y6 2018 is equipped with a very loud external speaker. Its peak volume at special moments can reach 88 dB. At the same time, the detailing of the sound does not suffer at all. It is worth noting the HUAWEI Histen technology, which optimizes the sound by simulating the presence in a theater or concert hall. There is a function of a kind of orchestra, when several phones can play the same music track, creating a truly surround sound. The speaker performs well, because the interlocutor is heard quite clearly.

Camera

The main camera in the Huawei Y6 2018 is 13-megapixel, it is complemented by a really powerful LED flash, as well as phase detection autofocus. The camera has a standard set of settings and modes.

The manufacturer paid special attention to the front 5-megapixel camera. This module is great for taking self-portraits, as it has a separate flash. Also, the front camera received two modes: intelligent and automatic. It is possible to change the background, or use various built-in filters. There are many tools here to improve self-portrait shots. Moreover, the face module is able to recognize the user's face for further unlocking.

findings

Huawei has managed to make the Y6 2018 a remarkable budget smartphone in many ways. Close attention is paid to the "frameless" design, sound and screen. The device provides good performance in standard tasks, and also boasts a new security system in the form of unlocking the device using a face scan.

Pros:

  • Nice appearance.
  • Face recognition system.
  • Large FullView display.
  • Interesting front camera.
  • A very decent sound.

Minuses:

  • There is not enough power to run many demanding games.
  • There is no fingerprint scanner.
