The secret of the Nokia flagship. Why are the Finns hiding a new smartphone? Design, dimensions, controls

We bend our fingers: bezel-less screen with a diagonal of 5.7 inches in a body that is smaller than the 5.3-inch Nokia. More expensive looking and more compact body design. Better sound in the headphones and out of the speaker. Better rear cameras, better autonomy. And there is IP68 water resistance, and not a parody of it, like Nokia (it's a shame to say, IP54, splash proof!).

The problem is that the G6 is a brake. I never would have thought that last year's "coolest of the cool" Snapdragon 821 is a slow processor, but alternatively gifted programmers at LG made such a shell on top of Android, with which the smartphone "hiccups" under load, like your Samsung for 15 thousand rubles or iPhone 5S on iOS 11. Nokia 8 versus G6 - a supersonic fighter! And the quality of sound recording on microphones in Nokia is higher than in LG. And updates operating system happen more often, and the system itself is not polluted by excesses. And Wi-Fi works faster and catches networks at a greater distance from them.

And yet, if it were not for the "lags" in the LG G6 with or without reason, one could say that it is better than Nokia in everything, and not be mistaken.

conclusions

Nokia 8 is very difficult to assess objectively while you have its nameplate in front of your eyes. It is to compare the faces of Lindsay Lohan / Mickey Rourke before and now. To all this, you can answer “and you yourself try to go through so many difficulties that they have overcome!”, But the mood will not improve from this. Everyone knows perfectly well what difficulties Nokia has gone through, but here we have its best mobile phone, and it is not something that falls short of the iPhones-Samsung, but is somewhat inferior to Chinese creations. Is this the Nokia, the revival of which the Bolsheviks have been talking about for so long?

But it's worth covering up the famous logo - and, know criminality, not a bad smartphone! If it was written by ASUS, Meizu or ZTE, it would have been praised by everyone, and they would have done the right thing. Because almost all criticism boils down to "Nokia's flagship must be better, on par with the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S8 at least!"

But Nokia 8 is what it is. "With a soul", but sloppy execution. With a cool screen, but strange color reproduction. With a small diagonal IPS-matrix in a very long and thin body. Good cameras controlled by "brainless" automation. And an abnormal battery charge even without load.

For the first (and she is the first, let's be frank) attempts to create a flagship smartphone with blank slate- not bad. Because until 2016, the flagships of Huawei, if you remember, were also a pleasure "very for an amateur", but now, you see, they have worked on the mistakes, and breathe in the back of Samsung.

If the Nokia 8 drops in price to 30-32 thousand rubles, you can take the role of the fastest smartphone with fashionable and funny modifications in the cameras. But for 40 thousand here and now, "Chinese premium" and cheaper flagships win in comparison with Nokia in almost all disciplines, except for processor performance. We hope that HMD Global will draw conclusions, work on the bugs, and a real Connecting people awaits us by the release of the new flagship Nokia 9.

Pavel Gorodnitsky talks about how painfully long and fruitless Nokia has been working on its most ambitious project.

Nokia is the most troubled company of the last ten years. First, the Finns caught a powerful blow from Apple (iPhone killed push-button telephones), then abandoned the release of devices for Android (in vain), and then came under the control of Stephen Elop - the man who almost destroyed the legendary brand.

As a result, everything almost ended in disaster - Nokia went under the wing of Microsoft, and there the development of smartphones was frozen. It was possible to crawl out from under the rubble only at the end of 2016 - now HMD Global is responsible for Nokia gadgets, which seems to know how to make a profitable business. The results are really good - the market share of the phones of the revived brand is growing rapidly and steadily. However, we must admit: this is not the same Nokia, which resonated with every new product and was considered the most advanced manufacturer on the planet.

In the two years since the resurrection, Nokia made people talk about themselves exactly twice. The first - when the great model 3310 was revived. The second - when it released a remake of the "banana" phone from "The Matrix". Everything else is boring, monotonous, rectangular middle-class smartphones. Their prices are slightly overpriced, but the credibility of the brand has not gone away, so the average buyer will have to choose for a long time between the heaped up Xiaomi and the middle peasant from Nokia. This is how reputation works - you can't get away from it.

The most exciting thing about this story is Nokia's plans. The ambitions of the HMD Global bosses are well beyond the $ 150-300 price bracket. They want to become great, powerful, competitive and noticeable again. But there is only one way to this goal - you need to release a flagship. And this is where the managers of the company find themselves in a dead end. They understand that the release of a top smartphone should become a landmark, but they have no idea how to guarantee to explode the market.

The codename of the fateful device is Nokia 9. The first insights about it appeared in the spring of 2017, that is, just six months after the official renaissance of the brand. The network was poured into the case of the novelty (of course, in a case), then examples of photos, then full specifications- in short, a standard set. But nothing came of it: instead of the incredible Nokia 9, the Finns showed an ordinary Nokia 8.

This situation repeats itself from month to month. Every Finnish announcement is an expectation / reality meme. People believe that the mysterious "nine" will finally debut, and instead of it, the public is presented with some dull Nokia 6.1. Another deadline has recently shifted: it was planned that the flagship will premiere in the fall, but it was moved to February.

Classic. No one will be surprised if the main gadget of Nokia at MWC will be another ancient phone, which will be taken out of the coffin with only one purpose - to get into the headlines of IT publications.

Why it happens? There are two versions.

Brutal camera

V best years Nokia was turned on cameras - perhaps the current bosses think that it is simply incorrect to return without a killer module. Now at the top of the authoritative Dx0Mark rating there is not a single Finnish device at all, so there is a chance to jump over all the leaders and immediately take a place in the top.

Nokia 9 camera spy photos are as mythological as the smartphone itself. From time to time, images of the so-called revolving module - five lenses arranged in a circle - get on the Internet. Why such an option is needed - no one knows, but the creation of such a structure clearly takes a lot of time, effort and money. Most likely, it is because of this that the release is shifted.

The race for technology

The Nokia 9 was supposed to be stuffed with all the latest chips, but the iPhone X has clearly changed the Finnish strategy. First, I had to make a cutout - nowhere without it. Secondly, invent your own face unlock system. Thirdly, to achieve complete framelessness.

But after all the missions were completed, it made sense to wait for winter. It looks reasonable: you can add support for 5G (the trend of flagships for the coming years) and put the Snapdragon 855 processor (will be the most powerful throughout 2019). In addition, an under-screen scanner, ultra-fast charging and pure Android 9 are expected. Normal set for a target price of $ 990.

What will actually happen?

Most likely, Nokia will again disrupt the debut of a grand smartphone, but burst out with a banal flagship in the spirit of the eighth model. There will be an OLED screen, a dual camera, a Snapdragon 845 processor and a cost in the region of 40-45 thousand rubles at the start. If this happens, waiting for a real explosion and a challenge to the market from the Finns is already useless. Rejection of a large-scale idea will mean only one thing: Nokia's DNA has finally changed, and now it is an ordinary business project, and not a company that can really change the world.

Fingers curl: 5.7-inch bezel-less display in a body that's smaller than the 5.3-inch Nokia. More expensive looking and more compact body design. Better sound from headphones and from speaker. Better rear cameras, better autonomy. And there is IP68 water resistance, not a parody of it, like Nokia (it's a shame to say, IP54, splash proof!).

For the first (and she is the first, let's be frank) attempts to create a flagship smartphone from scratch is not bad. Because until 2016, the flagships of Huawei, if you remember, were also a pleasure "very for an amateur", but now, you see, they have worked on the mistakes, and breathe in the back of Samsung.

Long time there were rumors on the net about a new flagship smartphone from Nokia. Models TA-1004, TA-1052 and TA-1012 have been seen in benchmarks, then have been certified by various agencies. This information confirmed the possibility of an imminent appearance of a new phone from the Finnish company.

In May 2017, the FrAndroid resource first showed a photo in which it was captured Nokia smartphone 9, however, still under the veil of a special protective cover that hides appearance... A month later, a short video review appeared on the TechDroider youtube channel, where, based on all previous images, a comprehensive render of the flagship was shown. Then the fresh news had to wait all summer, until mid-September. Then new renders appeared on the social network Baidu, which allegedly represented the Nokia 9.

On this moment that's all the news about the upcoming flagship from HMD Global. But, even having collected such grains, one can already imagine what it will be like new smartphone, and make a small overview of it.

Appearance

Judging by the images presented, the phone will be equipped with an AMOLED screen. Its size can range from 5.3 (like its predecessor - Nokia 8) to 5.5 inches, and the resolution is 2560 * 1440. Tempered Gorilla Glass 5 will protect the screen from cracks and cuts. The glass front and back panels will have smooth curves. The smartphone will have a fingerprint scanner, which will be located on the back right under the Zeiss dual camera of 20 megapixels or 13 megapixels. It is worth telling about it separately.

One of the sensors will be color, the other will be monochrome. The owner of the smartphone will be able to choose which one to use. There will be a laser autofocus under the camera along with an LED flash. For selfie lovers, the device will offer a 13-megapixel front-facing module. The phone will allow you to shoot simultaneously on both cameras - the main one and the front one. The flagship may be equipped with an iris scanner, but this information is not completely reliable.

The USB connector and multimedia speaker will be located at the bottom of the case. The headphone jack will be located at the top, possibly there will also be a fingerprint scanner. In general, the body of Nokia 9 will be protected from moisture and dust, according to the IP68 standard. This means that the insides of the phone are completely protected from contact with dust, and it can withstand being at a depth of more than one meter for 30 minutes.

In general, Nokia uses the improved design of today's smartphones of its production - a screen with curved edges and thin bezels.

Interior fittings

The "heart" of the smartphone will be the eight-core Snapdragon 835 processor. However, analysts claim that the installation of the new Snapdragon 845 platform is possible. As for the amount of RAM, the data vary. Initially, it was thought that the phone will receive 4 GB. Then there was information about 6 GB, and some sources claim that there will also be a modification with 8 GB on sale. The amount of internal memory is also controversial - 64 or 128 GB.

The power source for the Nokia 9 will be a 3500 or 3800 mAh battery, equipped with support fast charging QuickCharge 4. The phone will be equipped with OZO Audio technology, which will record sound in 360 °, and will also be able to work with two SIM-cards. The flagship will be based on Android 8.0.

The technical specifications are largely similar to its predecessor, Nokia 8, but they also have a number of differences, for example, a new version operating system, increased by 2 GB of RAM, the possible presence of 128 GB of internal memory and wireless charging.

Date of appearance on the market

The exact date of the release of the new Finnish flagship in Russia and the world is still unknown. It was supposed to be announced along with the Nokia 8 in London or even earlier, but this did not happen. Rumors began to spread that the company had abandoned the creation of Nokia 9. But then it was reported that the presentation could take place in October 2017 or even in February 2018. However, these data also have no official confirmation. Therefore, we can only guess when the Nokia 9 will be released.

Price

The price of the phone is more predictable. In Europe, it is expected to cost 750 euros. In the UK, a price tag of £ 634 per unit is expected. In the United States, a model can cost around $ 699. If a model with 128 GB of internal memory appears on the market, then the price will undoubtedly rise.

Opinions

Future buyers are eagerly awaiting the latest news about Nokia 9. Reviews on numerous thematic sites confirm this. The only thing that scares you off buying a new flagship is its estimated cost - 750 euros. Only wealthy buyers will be able to purchase a smartphone.

At the end of 2016, the ban on the release of smartphones under the Nokia trademark expired. New owner the brand, the Finnish subsidiary of Foxconn under the name HMD Global, introduced the first smartphones at the beginning of this year - but none of them could be called top-end. Now the time for the release of the "flagship" has finally come. Meet the Nokia 8!

Design

From the first days of the “new” Nokia's existence, HMD made it clear that smartphones under a recognizable brand are not about an unusual design. Nokia 8 looks like the absolute majority of similar devices: the rounded corners of the 6000 series aluminum body with the usual frames and no design frills.

There are also no practical "goodies" like full protection against dust and water - the thrifty Chinese gave only protection against splashes (IP54). Under the display is a fingerprint scanner, one physical control button and two touch and USB-C port, above it - a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

There are several colors to choose from - matte or glossy blue, gray and copper.

Display

The novelty received a large 5.3-inch LCD-display with a luxurious resolution of 2,560 × 1,440 (550 pixels per inch). The screen is very bright - 700 nits - which will surely delight the owner of the Nokia 8 when he steps out into bright sunlight. In the inactive position, information about missed calls and messages is displayed on a part of the display, while a minimum of energy is consumed. 5th generation Gorilla Glass protects it from scratches and drops.

"Iron"

The heart of the Nokia 8 is the powerful and energy efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. Random access memory here 4 GB, built-in - 64 GB or 128 GB + cards are supported microSD memory... At one time I saw a model with 6 GB of RAM on the HMD website, but soon it was removed from there. Probably not yet time.

An interesting detail - a copper tube built into the body is responsible for heat dissipation in Nokia 8. In tandem with a graphite layer, it helps to dissipate excess heat more efficiently over the surface of the device, so that the gadget itself heats up more slowly and, as a result, will last longer.

ON

Like its predecessors in the face of Nokia 3, 5 and 6, the 8th model will receive almost no clouded stock ("clean") Android version 7.1.1 Nougat with an upgrade perspective new Android O in the near future. Since in HMD practically nothing has been changed in the "default" android - except that the system icons have been redrawn into the corporate one. blue color- then updates for Nokia 8 should be released quite quickly.

Camera

Taking photos and videos is the most strong point new flagship. The optics here are from Nokia's old partner - the German company Zeiss, the main camera is dual, it is equipped with 13 MP sensors from Sony (model IMX258). The first sensor is color, and the second is black and white. What does it do? In fact, there are a lot:

1. The Nokia 8's camera is capable of capturing more color and, as a result, producing high-quality images even in poor lighting conditions (in the evening or at night);
2. It becomes possible to create pictures with the "bokeh" effect (blur background as on iPhone 7 Plus). The camera allows you to manually adjust the blur level (!).

The developers have taught the Nokia 8 camera to make one more fashionable "trick" of this season - "bosie". It's like a selfie, only the screen is divided into two parts - an image with front camera, on the other - from the main one. In this mode (called Dual Sight), you can take photos and record videos.

The Nokia 8 has also become a smartphone for video streamers. The gadget allows you to broadcast live to YouTube and Facebook and simultaneously correspond with viewers right in the Camera application. For this purpose, there are three "advanced" microphones with 360-degree sound coverage. iPhone 7 with its stereo speakers nervously smokes on the sidelines!

What the press writes

Engadget columnist Mat Smith has already tried the Nokia 8 in action. He notes that the version in "copper" version deserves the most attention - it is "beautiful, not like everyone else, and cool." By the way, HMD spied this color scheme ... near a table lamp!

The camera of the novelty is in the spirit of the latest industry trends (dual cameras, video streaming). It's too early to talk about the quality of the pictures in detail, but according to first impressions Mat finds the camera good - and Nokia doesn't even focus on the quality of shooting!

Dual Sight is nothing new (something similar has already been done by Samsung and LG). But Nokia contributed to the development of the "bosie" format - a Livestream button appeared in the Camera application, it instantly sends content to popular social networks... Yes, in this scenario, cooling solutions will come in very handy ...

Another thing is that in reality it is very difficult to do beautiful picture from both sides at once - both from the "front" and from the main camera, and even to control it. So, no matter how much Nokia tries to promote the new photo and video mode, it is unlikely that it will succeed in repeating the glory of the selfie.

But actually streaming in real time is a good thing, and the mode of recording sound from three x360 Ozo Audio microphones makes it even better. The sound is great!

HMD engineers should be commended for other solutions as well. For example, they somehow managed to bring the Always On function to LCD-displays (usually this "feature" works only on OLED-screens, there is the ability to turn pixels on and off separately)! It is noteworthy that they do not disclose the secret of their development.

Conclusion:

“Great hardware and smart camera ideas are great, but they might not be enough to compete with Samsung and Apple. But at first glance, it seems that Nokia has done a lot of the right things. "

Price and release date

The price of Nokia 8 in Russia is 39,990 rubles, in the EU countries - 599 euros. First batch flagship smartphones will go on sale by September 2017.
