Last November, another device from Samsung, the Galaxy Grand Prime, appeared on shop windows and in store catalogs. More than six months later, in July 2015, the manufacturer decided to update the popular model and released its G531 update, which received Android Lolipop OS out of the box (owners of the 530 model still have not received an official update to version 5 of Android).

The model, which goes on sale for about $170, comes in two versions that differ in the processor installed. This could be Spreadtrum (G531H) or Marvell ARMADA (G531F). In the review we will focus on the features of the first version of the device.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime G531H, like its predecessor, has four cores, a gigabyte of RAM, a five-inch screen and an 8 MP camera. The design of the new product needs no introduction, since almost all Samsung smartphones are made in the same style.

Specifications Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime G531H

It is not known for certain what caused the change in hardware in the new model. Let’s not guess, but let’s try to figure out what a user who buys a Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime with an updated model index will get.

CPU

The Spreadtrum SC8830 is an inexpensive processor that competes with the MT6582 and Snapdragon 410. It operates at 1.3 GHz and has capabilities similar to the models mentioned above. Thus, the AnTuTu benchmark shows 21 thousand rating points (versus 16 - 19 thousand for MTK chips and 20 - 24 for Snapdragon).

The Mali 400 graphics chip used in the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime allows you to play modern 3D games and produces, although not high, acceptable FPS. The same GTA SA and Asphalt 8 will run on it without problems.

Memory

The RAM in the smartphone is 1 GB, this figure is typical today for smartphones that are on the border of the middle and budget class. This amount of RAM is enough for comfortable simultaneous operation of several programs and quick switching between them, but it may seem not enough under more serious loads.

The built-in storage has a capacity of 8 GB, of which a little more than half is available for downloading content. The rest is allocated to system partitions. The memory card allows you to expand disk space up to 64 GB.

Battery

The battery, with a capacity of 2600 mAh, has fairly good battery life. In reading mode, it will last for 7–9 continuous operation of the device; the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime will last a little less when watching videos. Games can drain the battery in about 5 hours, and in standby mode the smartphone will last 1.5 - 3 days, depending on the frequency of calls and network activity.

Camera

The eight-megapixel matrix installed in the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime is typical for devices of this class. It is equipped with a flash, has autofocus and can shoot video in high resolution. The quality of the photographs is at an average level: they are not masterpieces, but there is no reason to find fault (considering that this is far from a flagship).

The front camera of the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime is equipped with a 5 MP matrix and is quite suitable for selfies or video conferencing. However, no one expects more from her. For example, the function of recording video from the front camera may be required by at most one in ten users.

A certain DJ from Saratov filmed the camera capabilities in Grand Prime, which we are happy to share with you:

Display

The smartphone uses a five-inch TFT screen with a resolution of 960x540 pixels. The picture, in principle, is not bad, and the pixels are not striking. But the fact that the device, which claims to be in the middle class, uses not an HD display, but a qHD one, is a little upsetting. We wrote about the types of smartphone screens in this article.

The viewing angles are decent, there are no obvious color distortions when the smartphone is tilted, although the brightness is lost. It is not very comfortable to use the device in the sun, but it is quite possible to make out the inscriptions on the screen.

Data transfer

According to some reports, the smartphone received LTE support, but there is no official confirmation of this anywhere. We did not have the opportunity to check operation in fourth-generation networks, so the issue remained unresolved. But the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime does not have any problems with GSM and 3G.

Sound

The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime never claimed to be a music device, so we didn't expect anything special from the sound. It is quite typical and practically no different from other devices. We did not notice any noise, but there is traditionally a deficit in the lower frequency range, which is why the music plays too dry and harsh. These weaknesses are less pronounced with headphones.

OS

Android 5 Lolipop is the main difference between the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime G531H and the previous revision. The 530 ran a previous version of this OS.

The TouchWiz interface is an integral part of the firmware of Samsung devices. The version of the shell used in the new Galaxy Grand Prime is similar to that of the flagship models, but has more modest capabilities.

Pros and cons of Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime G531H

Pros of Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime:

  • good battery;
  • latest OS version;
  • SDXC memory card support.

Disadvantages of a smartphone:

  • the screen is not HD;
  • mediocre sound.

Conclusion

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime G531H is a smartphone that cannot be clearly classified as either a budget or middle class. The use of an inexpensive processor and qHD display is more typical for devices costing $100 - $150, not more. At the same time, the price tag of $170 does not make it possible to call the device a budget device.

Our review showed that the clear advantage of the device in the eyes of users will be the latest Android OS, version 5. Changes in the hardware matter only for “advanced” users; others simply won’t notice the differences between different revisions of the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime.

And another video of this device with good quality.

Nowadays, there are many smartphones that stand out either in appearance or in characteristics. The hero of our review, although he does not stand out as either the first or the second, but combines well a strict appearance and normal characteristics. Meet the affordable Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime smartphone.

Appearance and ease of use

The dimensions of the device may not be the most compact, but they are not record-breakingly huge either. You can either thank or blame for this, depending on how you feel about five-inch screens. The length is 144.8 mm, width 72.1 mm, and thickness 8.6 mm. The weight of the device is 156 grams.

It's nice that, despite the low cost, the manufacturer managed to make the phone very attractive. In appearance, there are notes borrowed from the manufacturer’s more expensive models. And the materials are quite good.

The front side is covered with protective glass, the sides are covered with glossy plastic disguised as metal, and the back cover is covered with matte plastic. Overall, for an affordable device, everything looks decent. To protect against scratches and falls, the front panel with the screen is slightly recessed inward.

Almost at the very top end there is a speaker, a scattering of sensors, among which there is no automatic brightness adjustment and a front camera. At the bottom there is a traditional composition of two touch keys and a mechanical key.

The location of the mechanical volume and power keys is familiar. The same can be said about the audio jack and microUSB port, which are located on the top and bottom ends, respectively. On the back side we will not see a second microphone, which is useful for noise reduction.

But a single LED flash, an 8 MP camera lens and a multimedia speaker are located right here. Under a thin cover with many latches there are connectors for two SIM cards in microSIM format and a microSD memory card, but you can only get to them after removing the 2600 mAh battery.

If we talk about ease of use, it is worth noting that operating the phone with one hand is not difficult. All controls are designed so that even users with small hands will not feel discomfort. Yes, and pressing the buttons has a predictable small stroke with a characteristic click.

Software, interface

The desktop interface uses TouchWiz paired with Android version 4.4.4. We have already seen this tandem in and its older brother, which we tested not so long ago. Despite the somewhat modest characteristics, the hero of the review did not lag behind its more expensive counterparts in smooth operation. Everything works smoothly and quickly.

Hardware platform

As mentioned above, the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime has a lot in common with the Samsung Galaxy E5 in terms of technical characteristics, but it is still somewhat simplified. Yes, the processor is the same - a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 (MSM8916) with a maximum frequency of 1.2 GHz, the modest Adreno 306 acts as a video accelerator. But the amount of RAM is only 1 GB, of which about 350 MB is available after switching on. The built-in storage is also not very capacious - 16 GB, however, it can be increased by using a microSD memory card.

Among the wireless interfaces, everything is standard - Bluetooth version 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4 GHz, as well as a whole set of navigation systems, which includes GPS, GLONASS and Beidou. As you would expect, they all work stably and well. Work with two SIM cards is organized as standard. The volume of the main speaker is good, but not very high. The vibration is also good. The earpiece and microphone are average. Not bad, but not the best either.

If we return to performance, then it is worth noting that the smartphone as a whole works smoothly and quickly, but when using several resource-intensive applications it constantly closes them, which is natural, since there is not much RAM. Even so, if you use your smartphone more as a phone and a means of communication, and less for games, then it is very difficult to notice performance problems. But with demanding games everything is not so simple. Yes, most of them work, but at low graphics settings.

For example, Dead Trigger 2 runs on low settings without any graphics lag, but on medium settings you can already notice jerks in some moments. All this suggests that the Galaxy Grand Prime is not designed for gaming.

To test the omnivorousness of the video player, we used the AnTuTu Video Tester application, which mostly tests using high-resolution files, which is not entirely correct in our case, because the screen resolution is much lower than what the benchmark makes it play. Despite this, some files were still able to be opened, although it is worth noting that it is better to install a third-party player - then you will definitely be able to watch almost any videos.

Autonomy

The smartphone is equipped with a removable battery with a capacity of 2600 mAh. In medium load mode, the device easily works for two days, if you do not get too involved in games. At the same time, the screen worked for almost 5 hours, the phone conversation time was 1 hour 15 minutes, and the total playing time in DeadTrigger 2 was 40 minutes. Overall, these are very good results. In our tests, we set the brightness to 63%, which corresponds to a value of 200 cd/m².

Screen

Our Galaxy Grand Prime is equipped with a TFT display with a resolution of 960x540 pixels, while the pixel density is 240 ppi. The screen has a small air gap and an oleophobic coating.

There is no automatic brightness adjustment sensor. The brightness itself varies from 17.9 cd/m² to 315 cd/m². In this case, the contrast is 1:439. Of course, the screen fades in the sun, but the information remains legible.

We also checked the factory screen calibration. The graphs show that the screen is a little warmer than necessary. The color gamut is narrower than sRGB and shifted towards warm shades. I wouldn't dare call the screen bad. But it can be good, because you need to understand that the device is inexpensive. On the other hand, it would be nice to have automatic brightness adjustment, but for some reason it is not here.

Cameras

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime is equipped with two cameras – a 5 MP front camera and an 8 MP main camera. The front one has standard characteristics, but among them there are interesting settings that will help retouch the face, enlarge the eyes and change the oval of the face. The main camera can take photos in HDR mode and video in FullHD resolution. The basic settings are well known from other Samsung models.

If we talk about the quality of pictures from the main camera, they turn out to be quite average. There is nothing masterpiece, but the camera cannot be called frankly weak either. The pictures are especially good in sunny, clear weather, but with poor visibility and especially in the evening/night time, the quality of the photos is quite average. The front camera is only suitable for Skype. She is capable of taking good shots, but only in good lighting conditions.

Results

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime is an inexpensive but very high-quality smartphone from a renowned manufacturer. Yes, its main competitors have better characteristics and screen resolution, but they are mostly produced by more modest brands. The small screen resolution in 2015 looks a little strange, but at the same time, to see individual pixels you need to have very good eyesight. A small amount of RAM, of course, is also not an advantage, but you need to take into account that the smartphone works smoothly and quickly, even with a large number of installed applications. Don't forget about the appearance - the smartphone looks more expensive than what they ask for. And this is a significant advantage for an affordable device. At the time of writing the review, the cost of the smartphone was 4199 UAH. It can be safely recommended for ordinary people who use their smartphone primarily for communication, and not for playing games at maximum settings.

What I didn't like

When you shoot with a camera with LED lighting, glare remains in the photo.

What I liked

Good phone

What I didn't like

The phone is very slow when using two SIM cards, the time is constantly lost.
The first SIM card is hard to pull out.

What I liked

Excellent main and front camera, good screen, stylish design, reasonable price

What I didn't like

in the Grand, without the Prime) the camera is clearer, the cover is slippery, without the habit you can drop it

What I liked

shape, screen, performance

What I didn't like

The sensor behaves very strangely, sometimes you have to press three times hard, and sometimes you barely touch it and it instantly responds. Next, a very quiet call signal and alarm clock, respectively. The main camera is simply terrible, in my opinion, after about 3 minutes of shooting, it starts to get pretty good. It does heat up sensitively, after every minute or two it loses sharpness, today I was in the Svyaznoy store where I bought this thing, where the seller told me that it was autofocus being adjusted and this is an absolutely normal phenomenon. Before that I had ACE 2, I didn’t have such hemorrhoids, and the camera at 5 MgP was hardly worse than this one. A 5-inch diagonal with such a (sometimes) dull sensor is not good at all. Tomorrow I will take the camera claim for repair under warranty.

What I liked

I don’t want to touch on them, but by the way... It makes calls, receives calls, the front camera is not bad, although I expected better from it. Smartphone as a smartphone

What I didn't like

The camera is weak with disgusting color reproduction.
The call is so quiet that if it is in your pocket or bag, you can easily miss it. I had to set reminders for missed appointments.
Programs freeze. And specifically so. This was not observed on the previous simple Samsung.

What I liked

Battery, bright juicy screen, good network and wi-fi reception

What I didn't like

1. no light sensor
2. There is no backlighting of the touch keys.
3. The speaker sound is not very loud. Quiet system signals.
4. Taking into account all the shortcomings, the price is clearly overpriced.
5. an incomprehensible situation with the screen - the sellers assure about durable protective glass, it feels like plastic...

What I liked

1. Lightweight, thin 2. colorful screen, optimal screen resolution 3. camera. both take decent quality pictures 4. 2 sim 5. android 4.4.4. processor 4 cores 6. well built, high quality plastic

What I didn't like

small memory, lacks familiar galaxy functions

What I liked

good display, comfortable sensor, processor performance

What I didn't like

lack of backlighting of the buttons, when you press a button on the right side, you involuntarily press the button on the left side.

What I liked

price, design, front camera, built-in memory, functionality.

What I didn't like

The front camera was disappointing. The front camera, although wide-angle, is clearly not 5MP, but a maximum of 2, and also slightly distorts the image. In artificial light, the photos taken by the front camera are simply terrible. The phone often slows down when unlocking the screen. Obviously buggy native software. The operation of the leftmost button is not clear. No auto brightness. A strange repeated glitch has been noticed: after you download one of the SIM cards to speak, the second one becomes active for reception not immediately after the end of the conversation, but after about a minute. The external speaker is quiet, vibration is average. I often miss calls on the street. There are also complaints about the appearance and configuration. The gray phone is equipped with a white charger and white headphones!!! The assembly is not bad, there are no gaps, etc. no, but the plastic looks very cheap, the back cover in some places is not clear how it is molded and the outlines of the battery are visible. In general, the phone looks simple. Assembled in Vietnam, maybe that’s why it turned out so clumsy. In general, the phone is clearly not a flagship, but a mid-level one, although you can’t tell from the price. You can look for something similar from competitors, only much cheaper.

What I liked

A good screen, no glare even at angles, the subscriber can be heard well, picks up satellites fairly quickly, good wifi, picks up right away, doesn’t fall off. Not a bad rear camera. Good sound in headphones (if you take good ones, not the original ones), 8 GB of memory. With moderate use, the charge will last for two days of use, which is generally not a bad result. There is a software charge saving mode. Look in the settings. Wifi drains a lot of charge. If you spend a long time on the Internet, then a day may not be enough.

What I didn't like

The only drawback is that the volume rockers and the lock button are not very conveniently located (located almost opposite the others). I press one thing, but another one works ((this is the only negative.

What I liked

Comfortable, stylish, price-quality 9900, I really hope that it will serve for a long time. It's a little difficult to switch to this menu after using Nokia for 10 years. Very happy, bought two)) PHOTOS ARE COOL, fits very well in my small hand. It holds a charge for an unexpectedly long time and uses it economically. sometimes I don’t charge for up to three days

What I didn't like

Tell me, I can’t figure out where to listen to music, I had to download Aimp to listen to music

What I didn't like

During a conversation with 1 SIM, the second one is not available, but in the settings you can set forwarding from one to another SIM.
The ringer and vibration volumes are rather weak.
Holding it in one hand and dialing a number is extremely inconvenient; a 4.5-inch screen diagonal would be much more convenient.
In order to make a call from the 2nd SIM, you need to make 3 extra movements, which is not convenient.

What I liked

The charge lasts for 3.5 days, while talking for 30-40 minutes a day, with the Internet turned off and everything else also turned off. (I don’t know if this is good or bad, this is my first Samsung)

What I didn't like

Low battery life

What I liked

Large bright screen, good ergonomics, powerful processor, no lags in operation

What I didn't like

1.When writing SMS, the sound of the keys does not turn off, I tried all the possibilities. (In other Samsung phones this function is turned off by default) but this one is annoying. You'll have to write to support.
2. There is no way to make a screen saver for the SMS screen, and there are no options for selecting the SMS window.
3. There is no function to turn off the ringer sound, alarm clock, or turn the phone over
4. Very small keys for typing, constant errors. There is room on the screen for larger keys in this phone due to the large screen.
5. The vaunted 2600 mAh battery lasts as long as the 1650 mAh on the Samsung galaxy S2 plus.
6. Android 4.4.4. The functionality is worse than 4.2.3. (the location of the function is completely different, but if you figure it out it’s more convenient).
7. On the Samsung Galaxy S Plus GT-I9001 Android 2.3, but the functionality is better. 4.4.4 on this phone.

What I liked

Screen 5 inches. Two SIM cards. Price 9990 in connected. (was). Added the function of sending SMS on a schedule.

What I didn't like

1.Charged with all sorts of unnecessary settings, it takes a long time to customize it for yourself.
2. During the night with Wi-Fi turned off, sit down to 50%
3.narrow audio reproduction band 125-8000 Hz (expensive monitor headphones were used)
4.Android is always trying to control the user in everything, including stealing photos from the phone and listening to the content of conversations. Almost all applications require control over the phone (even games require control of the GSM transmitter, SD card, photo and all devices) so you don’t have to think about any security.
5. The already small phone memory of the phone is quickly filled with garbage by all applications, approximately 100-200 MB per hour 00 what Android does, only God knows.
6. inability to control an Android phone, the phone thinks it is smarter than the user (the most terrible OS I have ever seen, no security, photos, videos will easily become public knowledge)
7. Oddly enough, it takes 2 minutes to open a page in the browser; my old Nokia on a Simba opened a full page in 15 seconds.
8. Because of the appalling attitude towards security, I will give the phone to my nephew, since I don’t intend to carry a wiretap with me, this phone, like any other Android, is a tribute to the disrespect of the OS creators for clients, the client should control the phone, not the phone by the client.
9. The OS itself includes client tracking as if by chance.

What I liked

Quite fast, normal camera.

What I didn't like

I haven’t discovered it yet, I hope it won’t disappoint me. A small detail is a very short charging wire and headphones for elephant ears.
