Porta Pro: A timeless KOSS classic. Design and wearing comfort

Koss porta PRO has been on the market for more than 25 years and during this time the model has not lost its fans. People buy headphones, break them after a couple of years and get the same model again. What attracts them? Comfortable headband and ear pads, good sound from music tracks and movies, as well as the ability to combine headphones with various transmitting devices.

Design and ergonomics

Taking Koss porta PRO out of the box, you can be surprised to feel their lightness and, as if, fragility. But this laxity and looseness is deceptive. In fact, headphones can delight you with durability and practicality. Fragility and a feeling of fragility occurs due to the fact that all elements of the device are not firmly fixed and remain mobile.

Due to its mobility, it is possible to anatomically fit the headband on a head of any diameter. The headband height is adjusted by sliding two plastic adjusters over the metal bail. In the middle, the adjusters meet - at the maximum possible width of the headband.

Users note that it is advisable to adjust the height of the headband before putting the headphones on. Otherwise, there is a risk of grabbing hair and pulling out a good clump when removing the headphones or setting the desired arc width.

Headphones with open earcups and over-ear cushions do not provide a high degree of noise isolation. There is definitely nothing to do with them in the subway, the hum of the train will drown out any melody. But on the other hand, on a busy street, wearing these headphones, you can hear a car driving from behind, a cyclist approaching.

Other design features:

  • the possibility of compact folding;
  • the presence of a balanced wire to both headphones;
  • "L" -shaped plug with over 90 degree rotation for comfortable installation.

A distinctive feature of Koss headphones is the presence of foam ear cushions and special temporal supports on the cups. In the area of the stops there are also external adjusters that help to set the force of the "pressing" of the cups to the ears.

This is how Koss porta PRO differs from the Sporta model of the same manufacturer. There is no regulator in the Sporta model, which is probably why it is considered that the sound in them is worse.

The loudspeakers in the ear cushions are attached to the cups in a movable manner and can be scrolled on hinges. This allows the earbuds to be immediately attached comfortably to ears of any size.

The owners of the device note that even with prolonged use of the headphones, there is no discomfort in the ears, the scalp does not sweat, the headband does not rub the head and does not press on the crown. Ergonomics are excellent, single complaints arise from users who wear headphones on their heads for more than 4 hours.

Compact folding is another plus of these headphones. Cups rotate on hinges, fold inward. This opens the hooks that connect the ends of the headband.

This prevents the headphones from opening unintentionally. Some difficulties arise with wires, which become stiffer in the cold. In order not to tear them, it is better not to use the device at -20.

The set also includes a leather-like case, which is tightened with ties. Although it looks very small, folded headphones just fit into it.

Since the case is soft, it can be easily stowed in a bag or pocket. Moreover, given the normal durability of the headphones, you don't have to worry that somewhere they will be pressed against by books or the bag will not be neatly placed or thrown.

Available functions

The functionality of the headphones is minimal, their task is simply to reproduce sound.

But they can work with various devices:

  • push-button telephones;
  • smartphones based on Android, iOS or Windows Phone;
  • music players;
  • laptops and PCs.

7 best Koss headphones

Owners of the headphones note that they are well suited for listening to audiobooks, as they clearly and clearly reproduce human speech. It is also convenient to use the device to listen to podcasts on the way to work or on a walk.

For sports, Koss porta PROs are not very suitable. According to users, balanced cables get in the way when driving. Hands get confused in them, sometimes by accidentally pulling on the cable, you can rip the headphones off your head.

Cyclists and runners have a positive opinion of the device, who highly appreciate the dynamics of melodies and sound detail.

There are also rave reviews from moviegoers who praise the headphones for a good fit. Even after several hours of using the device, there is no headache, no feeling of heaviness.

The only drawback is that you cannot watch movies in a room where someone is sleeping, as low noise insulation lets all sounds out.

Play sound

The sound is almost perfect. And not only for headphones in the price range of 2,000 - 3,000 rubles. Users are actively comparing the quality of melody playback with monitor headphones, wondering that small overhead "ears" can compete with professional equipment.

Some experts point out that the point here is most likely in the "floating" dynamics, not tightly fixed on the cup.

Be that as it may, the reviews of the headphone owners about the sound quality are mostly positive:

  • “Velvety bottoms. Listen to pop music, like rap. The tops are not very distinguishable, but the middle is lively. Great for watching movies, clearly convey special effects. In the subway, however, you can't see the vidos, the noise gets in the way. "
  • “I want to bring out the quality of the sound to merit. The mids and lows are fairly well defined. A little bit of treble is missing, but the scene still feels great. ”
  • “The bass is good, medium and high also flawlessly. For home or office - ideal, you can use it to listen to voice messages, but the microphone will have to be purchased separately. "
  • “For walks in the woods, at home and running are good. The high sensitivity of the speakers allows them to be used even with old phones. It perfectly recreates a wide stage and quite decent vocals. You have to adjust the bass in the equalizer. "

The low end, by the way, in headphones is not so good as to admire them. The reason is the lack of sound insulation. To fully experience the power and depth of rock compositions, it is better to purchase full-size monitor headphones, such as Technics. And Koss is more of an everyday option for unassuming music lovers.

conclusions

Poor sound insulation, which is so often mentioned by users, is a design feature of the Koss porta PRO. And, if you want to enjoy great music in your daily life, you should put up with the background "behind your back".

Optimally, these headphones are suitable for people who love walking and cycling, as well as music lovers who prefer to go to school to music, work to their favorite tunes. The foam earbuds are not particularly durable, but a spare set of ear cushions can be purchased separately.

Users call Koss porta PRO legendary headphones. And they mean not only the "longevity" of a single design and construction, but also the sound quality remains consistently good and an ergonomic fit that makes the headband suitable for any head.

The requests of dear readers were heard - putting aside the segment of expensive headphones, I will tell you about some interesting and inexpensive ears;)

Headphones are not new ... I will say more - they are much older than me) But that is why they are no less interesting. Welcome under the cut!

Judging by the number of positive reviews and comments in the reviews of other headphones like “ yes well nafig - I have a Koss port about and I'm happy”, The headphones are really good. Well, you can also check my objectivity)

The headphones are sold in a black hard cardboard box. The box is not from the category of Chinese horseradish - not a shame and as a gift)

Inside, in the thickness of the foam rubber, the headphones themselves, an adapter from 3.5mm to 6.3mm and a case rolled into a tube are inserted. At first I even thought it was some kind of (for some reason) flashlight ... but it really is nothing more than just a case with a lanyard.

Appearance

Headphones ... well, I don’t know - they don’t want to gain trust with their design) A thin metal arched headband (thanks to which the headphones can be twisted almost into a ring for transportation) connects two “ears” and allows them to move along this very arc, depending on the size of the listening head.

Above the "ears" there are foam inserts for a more thorough fixation, as well as the correct positioning of the headphones on the head.

The speakers themselves have a small degree of freedom - they can rotate at a small angle relative to the axis of the headband, which can also have a positive effect on the convenience of fixation. But the fit is still not the best - whatever one may say, the sound from the outside world will penetrate under the flat soft ear pads. The wire goes to both sides, and the wire is strong enough (at least at first glance), with a straight plug at the end.

In general, the headphones sit very nicely on the head - they don't press too much. And at the same time, they are not some kind of whopper, because of which it is difficult to turn your head - the weight of the “ears” is so small that at some moments you forget that you are wearing headphones at all. Who is gadget-hung, am I gadget-hung ?!(with) :)

Sound

As for the sound, the Pro port has remained a popular model of on-ear headphones for many years for a reason. The first thing you pay attention to when listening to these headphones is tremendous deep bass. Such a deep and rich low-frequency range is rarely found even in much more expensive headphones. However, this is not the only merit of Porta Pro. Almost any listener who is not spoiled by expensive portable equipment, but who is used to listening to players with complete headphones, will be extremely impressed with the overall sound quality. Both high and middle frequencies are worked out well enough and sound well played, whole, with good natural sounding.

Electronic recordings on the port sound very impressive - powerful, dynamic, with excellent depth and detail. The headphones show themselves very well when playing other musical genres. Perhaps only heavy rock is clearly not their element - although its sound is full-bodied, the hard grooved chords of the bass guitars and the elastic hits of the bass drums are displayed in a very simplified way. Because of this, the aggression so necessary for metal suffers significantly. However, in my opinion, this is the only noticeable drawback of the Porta Pro.

Coinz

You may have already noticed a small token (or a coin?) In the pictures. It is pleasantly heavy, metallic, embossed. The inscription says that Koss Porta Pro headphones are supposedly already 25 years old and it would be time to get a cake with 25 candles ... But, to be honest, I'm somewhat perplexed by this figure and really don't understand what it means. 25 years ago I was not even in the project, so I can't say absolutely nothing about the sound quality of the model of those years :) So it was hardly a quarter of a century ago that these ears were there, with just such a design and sound quality. And the "new old" model, it seems, is only 5-6 years old. Maybe 25 just hit the name of the model, which is a kind of abstract guarantor of sound quality? May be so. But whatever it was, I congratulate the hero of the day)

This bonus is only available in limited edition headphones Koss Porta Pro 25th Anniversary Edition which are no different from the version. Well, as nothing ... except for the price and limited edition - with this very coin :)

And yet ... who else has what versions? :)

Pros and cons

pros
- Cover included;
- Metal headband, foldable design;
- Good almost "omnivorous" sound, price / quality ratio;
- Price.

Minuses
- The design is so "transparent" that I personally almost have no confidence;
- Judging by the reviews, over time there may be problems with the L-shaped connector;
- Weak noise isolation, not the strongest "press" to the ears.

The price for the version "with a coin" is about 1300 rubles, while the cost of the usual configuration starts at 800 rubles.

The end

Eh ... ten years ago I was an inveterate metalhead - James was a kind of idol and I literally did not get out of black T-shirts with skulls. And, perhaps, I would still listen to METAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL and wore a beard, if somehow everything itself did not dissipate and disappear) Despite the "ancient" age of Koss Porta Pro, which means there is little chance of unknowingly hearing them at that time, no there is no merit in this regard) Now I just listen to different music to suit my mood and that's it.
So if the listener is not an ardent fan of rock, and is also not going to spend several thousand on the purchase of expensive headphones, then he can safely recommend the heroes of this review, who have not lost their charm for their advanced age.
Considering the cost and the fact that it is recouped one hundred percent, you can take these headphones for home or everyday wear, as well as as a gift to someone who treats notes without snobbery.

Advantages of the store: a high selection of goods with very reasonable prices, fast service and delivery. Comment: I ordered these headphones in the Doctorhead online store. Immediately after ordering, I received a quick response from store managers and made a deal to buy headphones. The service was very good and dignified, it was pleasant to communicate with a person who knows a lot. The goods were delivered the next day, much faster than I myself calculated.

In my opinion, these are the best headphones among the inexpensive ones. We have worked faithfully for over a year, their sound is amazing, the design is also interesting. I'm just delighted with them, I don't even want to change them for anything else.

I decided to make myself a present for February 23rd, I bought it, as they say, blindly. I didn't even know that these were such popular ears. First of all, I decided to try them out on a recently downloaded rip from Scorpions vinyl and ... I was very upset. The sound is boomy, high frequencies are lost, sound detail is poor. In general, the topic of vinyl was not disclosed. Moreover, before that I used (and will continue to use for some time) penny panasonic 0101, which give more realistic sound with flat frequency characteristics. The only thing that these ears have done well is electronic music. But since I listen to it only in the car, and not at home and not in the player, these ears do not suit me. I sell.

Praising KOSS is seditious. But, I'll take a chance. For their penny cost, the ears are wonderful! Yes, the design is without frills, yes, the bass in them is vulgar, yes, they are unclear ... But, they are correct in the middle and at the top! In them (plebeian bass does not count) "Euclidean geometry" - all sounds in their places. For "sausage" and metals, the bass is wide open - not a strong hindrance, but in classical music there is not so much "bass-extremism". And what voices are filled - Grado and Sennheisers will give a head start! The plates in them - ring, not rustle, when the singer reaches the letter "C" - it does not seem that he has no front teeth ... as in some highly praised headphones. I listened to them for 4 or 5 years. I have Sporta pro for sports, and Porta pro for the rest (Porta is clear, better, more sophisticated). Both those and others endured incredible loads. The sportsmen were so wet from the rain that they thought they would not survive - they are still alive. Even the ear cushions are native. (The light becomes very decrepit from the foam - I always keep it in a case). Since it is important who praises, I will say about myself that I am listening to Ch. way of the classic. music. Opera more. In his youth he was a "metalist" and now sometimes, but rarely ... Sports - under the furious techno (not strong in styles). So, these headphones are very good. recommend!!! I changed them, now 2 days ago, on Audio-Technica ES7. Yes, the new ones will certainly be better, but the money is different ...

I bought these headphones about half a year ago - since then I have not parted with them. Really classic. When choosing, they bribed reviews like "an analogue of a Kalashnikov machine", "have been produced since the early 80s" and "give a juicy bass". Well, what can I say. Of the undoubted PLUSES: - Very cool "old school" design. Classic! Largely because of this, I preferred them to the more modern and not so stylish Sporta Pro. - Ba-a-as! Just incredible bass for a budget model costing a little over 1000 rubles. Perhaps not as detailed sounding as we would like, but if you buy this model as an alternative to standard player earplugs and are not spoiled by the sound of $ 200 studio headphones, then you will definitely not be disappointed! The bass in Porta Pro is not as true as many uncolored sound lovers appreciate, but very juicy and deep. - Lightweight and comfortable. Quite tight, but comfortable to cover the head. They do not move out, do not press. I used these headphones everywhere, even rode on a snowboard in them, and I can say that they have enough fixation on their head even for such an active sport. The use of a three-position regulator of the pressing force to the temples in the design is considered nonsense, because all the same, with each removal, it gets lost. But for me personally, this is not critical: even in the default position, the headphones sit comfortably. - The foam rubber used in the headphones is of very high quality, and after six months of active use, there are no problems. To be honest, I was surprised to read that someone's torn and wears out, I'm fine, although the production is in China. MINUSES: - Quite archaic bow design. Out of habit, it was difficult to put them on, and sometimes even painful: the bow often pinches the hair, and with an awkward movement you can pull out a couple of pieces :) True, I quickly got used to this, and after a week I felt absolutely no discomfort when putting on. - Open construction. Don't even think about using these headphones in the subway or other similar places. Noise isolation is poor. - Quite flimsy design of fastening the innermost speaker housing (in the pictures it is blue) to the external holder (black and metal). The inner part of the earphone is fixed on something like a floating plastic hinge, sandwiched between 2 "vices". From experience I can say that this is the weakest point of these headphones: a couple of times when snowboarding, I fell on the porta pro in my breast pocket, and then took them out with one inner "ear" already flying out of the holder. Fortunately, the plastic hinge itself did not break off, but only slightly deformed, and with a slight click snapped back into the "vice" holding it. After that I try not to use these headphones for sports. I'm just afraid to break at the next fall. SUMMARY: Great headphones for your money! In this price range, I think there is no equal to them. In particular, I had the opportunity to listen to AKG K27i - against the background of a kosse - just nothing. If before buying these ears you only listened to "plugs", then the sound of the kosse will definitely make an indelible impression on you! However, over time, I think, I will want better sound insulation and sound detail.
