AirPods Review: Apple's Smart Wireless Headphones. Left Apple AirPods (L) white How long do they last without recharging

It has generated more controversy and curiosity than any other recent move by the company. Part of this decision is due to Apple's intention to "incentivize" the transition to the use of wireless headphones. Below we will explain in the questions and answers what the new "apple" wireless headphones are and how they work.

What are AirPods?

AirPods are Apple's wireless earbuds released in September 2016.

How much do AirPods cost?

The cost of headphones in retail ranges from 13,000 to 16,000 rubles.

Where can I buy AirPods?

Headphones are available at Apple retail stores and third-party retailers such as or .

Do AirPods come free with new iPhones?

Unfortunately no. iPhone XS and XS Max come with wired EarPods that connect to your device via the Lightning port.

The latest iPhones lack an audio jack. Does this mean I should use AirPods?

No. iPhone is compatible with Lightning-enabled wired headphones or any other Bluetooth headphones. You can also use an adapter that works with regular headphones.

AirPods work via Bluetooth?

Yes. AirPods use Bluetooth to connect to iPhone.

What is the special chip implemented in AirPods?

AirPods are powered by the Apple-designed W1 processor that powers the headphones. The chip makes it easy to pair AirPods with iPhone - just open the case next to your smartphone and the device will display a window to sync with iPhone.

The W1 also provides wireless connectivity, helps conserve battery power, and works with the motion accelerometer and optical sensors to automatically adjust playback and turn on the microphone so that the wearer can use one or two headphones. Thanks to this, AirPods turn on the sound as soon as the user puts them on.

Is the W1 Processor Exclusive to AirPods?

No. This chip is implemented in some other models of Apple headphones, for example, Beats.

How many sensors are in AirPods?

Each AirPods has an infrared sensor that detects when the device is in your ears. In addition, there is an accelerometer that detects taps on AirPods (more on that below).

Can I only use one earpiece?

Yes. Each headphone is separately synchronized with the iPhone, so if you wish, you can use only one of the pair, and the W1 chip will tell the iPhone which one works.

How to charge AirPods?

The headset comes with a charging case, at the bottom of which there is a Lightning port for charging it. In addition, the branded case has its own battery. If you forgot to charge your headphones before going out, just put them in a case for 15 minutes and the charge will last for three hours of battery life.

What is the battery life of AirPods?

According to Apple, AirPods allow you to listen to music for 5 hours without recharging. When using the charging case, the headphones can work up to 24 hours.

Can I use AirPods with Mac or Apple Watch?

Yes. In fact, when you sync your AirPods to your iPhone, the earbuds automatically pair with your Mac and Apple Watch, as long as they're running macOS Sierra (or later) and watchOS 3 (or later), respectively.

Which iPhones are compatible with AirPods?

The headset will work on any iPhone running iOS 10 or later.

Can I connect AirPods to third party devices?

Yes. AirPods can connect to any standard Bluetooth audio player or Android device. Synchronization with the device is carried out using the button on the charging case.

What happens if one of the headphones is lost?

Unfortunately, due to the diminutive size of the headset, the headphones are easy to lose. Apple has provided the ability to replace one of the AirPods for a fee ($69).

Do AirPods have quality sound?

The sound quality on AirPods is nearly identical to the wired EarPods that come with iPhone.

Are AirPods waterproof?

No. However, the headphones are safe to use in the rain or at the gym, but swimming with them is not recommended.

Apple got rid of the headphone jack in the seventh iPhones (), but softened the transition period by putting branded EarPods with a Lightning connector and an adapter to the good old minijack in the box with them. For those who do not need a transitional period, the company offers to buy AirPods wireless headphones.

Apple AirPods are both a product at the cutting edge of technology and an endless source of jokes and memes. This often happens with things that either open up a new consumer category, or claim to be rethinking this category. So it was with Google Glass, the first iPhone, the first iPad and many others. They were not the best and polished products, but they laid an important foundation for future progress. However, already at this stage, AirPods look like a thoughtful and complete device. True, dear.

The hi-tech in these headphones are responsible for: an energy-efficient W1 chip, instant connection to devices in the Apple ecosystem and a variety of sensors and accelerometers.

The jokes and memes include the "dental floss" case, the "brush head" or "mini hair dryer" earphones themselves, and the illusory possibility of losing one of them.

Having unpacked the box and once guffawed at dental analogies, you quickly forget about them. I walked down the street in AirPods for several days and did not notice that someone was looking askance at me like I was crazy, who had escaped from the dental convention.

Connection

Apple loves the words "magic" and "magic" - just think of "magic trackpad" and "magic mouse" ('Magic trackpad and' Magic mouse'). The company also wants to present AirPods as something magical.

"The AirPods work like magic. They have no switches or buttons. They automatically pair with all your Apple devices, and you only need to double-tap their case to access Siri," Phil Schiller, senior vice president, describes the work of the new headphones. Apple for Worldwide Marketing.

That's it. Carrying a mini-computer in your pocket with instant access to all the knowledge accumulated by mankind (and using it for a selfie) is now not strong enough magic. The real magic is the instant connection of small ear speakers to it.

Okay, enough sarcasm - it's really nice that you don't need to once again go into Bluetooth settings, look for a device there, enter pass codes and press buttons. You open the case, bring it to the iPhone, and it immediately shows you a card that the headphones are connected and shows the charge level.

By the way, there is still one button on the case body - by clicking on it, AirPods can be put into discovery mode by other devices. Wait, you ask, what is the detection mode? Is there magic there?

The fact is that AirPods can be used with any Apple device that supports iOS10, watchOS3 or macOS Sierra. But many other Bluetooth-enabled gadgets recognize them perfectly.

I was not able to connect them as a headset to the Sony PlayStation 4 - however, Sony deliberately limits the range of headsets compatible with its console. But AirPods successfully connected to a Samsung TV and several Android phones.

Sensors and battery

There are a pair of sensors on the edges of each of the AirPods that know when it's in or out of your ear. This allows you to automatically stop the song, you just have to take one earbud out of your ear.

The sensors can be fooled by pinching them with your fingers - the AirPod will think that it is back in the ear and continue the song. In the settings, this feature can be completely disabled. It is called wonderfully: "Auto-detection of the ear."

By the way, working with non-Apple devices dramatically turns AirPods from a "magic" gadget into a regular Bluetooth headset. In addition to the need to go into the settings to connect, "ear auto-detection" does not work for them in any way.

The new W1 processor, which Apple has already begun to integrate not only into AirPods, but also into the products of the Beats company it has acquired, is responsible for the operation of the above described sensors, switches the audio signal between your devices and turns on noise-cancelling microphones when the phone receives a call. And, according to the company, it is more energy efficient than its counterparts.

The battery inside the headphones lasts for 5 hours. I even managed to squeeze out of AirPods for half an hour more than stated, continuously listening to them at medium volume. The case carries energy for another 19 hours and is charged via a regular Lightning cable that comes with the kit.

The LED inside the case will blink red when it's time to charge. Also, the energy level is shown in the widget on the iPhone - along with the battery of the smartphone itself and the battery of the Apple Watch (see screenshot in our gallery).

AirPods are powered right in the case. They can be charged for 3 hours of listening in 15 minutes, and for about another hour - up to 100%.

Calls, Siri, and Sound

The legs of AirPods are long for a reason - they have hidden microphones through which you can talk on the phone and give commands to the voice assistant Siri. When talking, external noise is filtered for the microphone so that you can be heard better. During a conversation on AirPods, I had no problems with communication or audibility at the other end.

To invoke Siri, you need to double-tap one of the AirPods. This action can be changed in the settings - instead of Siri, double-tap will stop or start the song again.

A serious disappointment for me was the inability to quickly skip a track with a gesture or increase / decrease the volume - the simplest functions that are well known to all owners of standard wired EarPods that come with iPhones.

Again, you need to ask Siri about all this: “next song”, “quiet down”, “louder”, “how much charge is left?” etc. That is, your voice flies over the Internet to the servers, is processed, turned into a command, and sent back to the smartphone - all in order to switch the track.

The sound was a bit disappointing. No, it is quite good and acceptable for most users. I myself do not consider myself an audiophile and it is difficult to distinguish between songs with different bitrates. But for 13,000 rubles, which will be asked for AirPods in Russia, I would like to get not only ease of connection, but also a significantly different sound quality. Now, in my opinion, AirPods sound on par or a hair better than the bundled EarPods. This is an elastic sound with a small margin in volume (it starts to be missed in the subway), but with a lack of low frequencies. Bass fans will be disappointed.

Fear of loss

AirPods stay in your ears only because of their shape. At first, you insert them into your ears and take them out with care - the plugs are small, will they suddenly fall, roll somewhere? But after a couple of days this feeling passes.

Magnets inside the case help the earbuds snap into place quickly, and another magnet holds the lid in place. Even if you open it, turn it over and shake it, AirPods will remain securely in their cells.

I didn’t run in AirPods (it’s time to write down regular running in the New Year’s resolution), but when walking fast, they didn’t fall out and sat securely in my ears. Apple claims that the standard EarPods often fell out of the ears precisely because of the wires that could be touched - and they pulled the earpiece out of the ear. There shouldn't be such a problem here.

But there may be another one. I ran into her when I was buying coffee and a muffin from a coffee shop counter on the street. So, I went to the window, pulled out one earpiece (the music stopped). With my hand holding the earpiece in it, I reached for my wallet, took it out, counted out the bills, handed them over. All this time, the earpiece was pressed with the ring finger to the palm. And when I got my coffee, muffin, and change back, I froze like a centipede wondering how it walks.

It was necessary to think over the logic of actions. First, put the earpiece back in, then put the change in your wallet and take a coffee. Or take everything, thank the cashier, then step aside, sort out all the items and then insert the earpiece? Here they are - the problems of the countries of the first world and the owners of AirPods.

Other wireless headphones on the arc could be moved to the neck, plugs on the wire - quit hanging out. With AirPods in such cases, you have to do juggling or immediately put them in your pocket, and after completing all the manipulations, return them to your ear. Maybe the case is not the most common, but I consider it my duty to warn you about it.

AirPods won't go on sale until the end of October, so it's possible that we didn't have the final sample of headphones on the test yet, and they are waiting for revision. The official price in the Russian Apple store will be 13,000 rubles.

Lost one earbud and left the other? Do not overpay and buy a complete set, because you can buy the left Apple AirPods separately!

*This kit only includes the left earphone (without charging case and box)!

Left Apple AirPods

Apple AirPods - a new era in the world of wireless headphones for your smartphone. Music will start playing automatically as soon as you put them on. And thanks to special sensors, playback will be paused if you remove them. Even if you lose one earphone and buy a new one to replace it, all functions will work the same. To sync your new earbud with your iPhone and the right earbud, all you have to do is place both earbuds in the charging case, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes white. After that, turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone and synchronize with AirPods.

No wires. No complications.

Apple's wireless headphones - AirPods - have a W1 processor designed specifically for them. Thanks to the presence of optical sensors and an accelerometer, the headphones recognize when you take them off and when you put them on. What's more, the processor automatically distributes audio and turns on the microphone, depending on whether you use one or both headphones. And the optional accelerometer and variable-pattern microphones cut out outside noise while you're on the phone or with Siri, focusing only on your voice.

Powered by an ultra-efficient W1 processor, Apple AirPods efficiently consume their built-in battery, allowing you to enjoy hours of music and calls. As many as 5 hours of non-stop playback without recharging is the best performance indicator among these headphones. This kit does not include a charging case, but with it you can significantly increase the operating time of the headphones. With multiple additional charge cycles, your headphones will last over 24 hours of playback and about 11 hours of talk time. And if you need fast charging, then 15 minutes in the case will allow you to listen to music for another three hours.

At the presentation in 2016, Apple introduced not only the seventh generation of iconic smartphones, but also wireless headphones for the iPhone 7.

Cupertino decided to completely change the concept of connecting a headset to a phone. There is no 3.5mm jack.

For an alternative, it was proposed to use the original wired headphones that connect to the Lightning port, or AirPods.

Let's take a closer look at how wireless headphones work and why they should be used instead of a regular headset.

Content:

Equipment

Headphones include a minimum number of items. At first glance, the contents of the box will seem scarce for such a considerable cost of the product, however, there is everything you need for comfortable work.

The box itself is made of durable cardboard, which many users prefer to use as additional storage space for the headset.

The package includes:

  • Case. It is also a charger;
  • Lightning cable;
  • User manual.

To recharge the headphones, just place them in a plastic case. Note that you need to use a Lightning cable to pre-charge the battery of the case.

Appearance

Externally, the new headset is very similar to the familiar wired EarPods.

In terms of shape, the wireless device is slightly thicker and sits better in the ears. First of all, engineers made sure that the chance of losing the gadget right while wearing it was minimized.

Bigger headphone look is explained not only by the desire to make them reliable, but also by the presence of a built-in battery, microphone and a large number of other details that are responsible for the interaction of the gadget with mobile devices.

One of the main components of the headphones is the W1 chip, which fully controls the operation of the headset - from controlling the charge level to connecting with any devices.

Also, the headphones have a proximity sensor. Its task is to determine whether the headphones are inserted into the user's ears.

Appearance of the plastic box Internet users have already dubbed it as "like a box for dental floss." In fact, the shape of such a cover is very practical and convenient.

Inside the box for each of the headphones there is a special compartment that firmly fixes them and at the same time charges them.

As soon as you place the headset in the plastic case, it automatically recharges. Bock works on the principle of the usual, so you first need to charge it, and then put the headphones inside.

It should be noted that the headphones are fixed in a plastic box with a magnet, which is built into the bottom of the box.

Thus, they will never fall out of their storage place, unless they are hit hard against a hard surface.

There is practically no play in the case cover, and the hinge itself is made of metal for even greater reliability. Also, the lid closes with a built-in magnet.

Price

AirPods do not belong to the category of democratic gadgets. In other words, this is a normal thing for Apple products. In Russia, you can buy headphones at official points of sale for 13 000 rubles .

On American sites, the scene is $159 .

The cost is really impressive, however, for your money you will get really high-quality headphones that cannot be compared with well-known Bluetooth headset models from, or.

If one of the headphones is lost, it can be purchased separately for $69. This price includes only one earphone, without plastic box and charging cable.

Device Support

Presented wireless headphones work with both new and older generations of smartphones and tablets from Apple.

The official list of supported devices is as follows:

By releasing AirPods, Apple decided not to limit itself to supporting its devices. Headphones can be easily connected to any other smartphone on Android,. The only difference is the reduction in functionality.

AirPods communicate with officially supported devices not only via a Bluetooth connection, but also at the OS software level.

With "non-native" gadgets, there is no function to connect through the menu or instantly stop the track after turning off the headset.

How do they work?

How AirPods work is pretty simple. You turn on Bluetooth on your phone and the devices automatically connect to each other. Using a wireless headset, you can listen to music, record sound, make calls.

No additional adapters are needed. The only thing you should pay attention to is the charge level of the headphones.

They turn off as soon as the battery runs out. To recharge, just place the headset in a plastic case.

Built-in sensors and diodes

At the edges of each of the headphones, two sensors are visible, with the help of which the device “understands” when the user inserts it into the ear or puts it on charge.

To stop playback, just put aside one of the headphones. To "deceive" the gadget, you can hide it in the palm of your hand.

And the microphone interacts perfectly with each other for incoming and outgoing calls. The sound of an incoming call is automatically redirected to the headset.

Inside the charging case there is a diode with which you can monitor the status of the headset without connecting it to your smartphone. If the LED starts flashing red, you need to put the headphones in for recharging. The green light of the diode indicates the activation of the charging process.

Connecting to an iPhone

Consider how to set up the first connection of wireless headphones to your iPhone.

To get started, make sure that your mobile device has a firmware version or a newer version installed. Older versions of the operating system do not support interaction with headphones.

Apple has organized the most convenient and fast interaction between the phone and the headset. The user only needs to charge the plastic headphone box, put the headset in it and charge it.

Follow instructions:

  • When the headphones are at least slightly charged, unlock your smartphone, place it near the docking station and turn on Bluetooth;
  • On the iPhone screen a dialog box will appear immediately. with the data of detected AirPods;
  • Click on "Connect";

  • The connection will take less than a second. As a result, detailed information about the headset will appear on the screen. In this window, you can control the remaining battery life of both the plastic buck itself and the headphones. To start using AirPods, click on the Done button.

Now you can play any music or video on your phone. The sound will be played through the headphones. If you get a call, the gadget will automatically turn off the music and turn on the built-in microphone.

Also, users noted an interesting feature of the wireless headphones. AirPods are able to sync with an alarm clock. When the signal is triggered, it plays both from the phone's speakers and in the headphones.

Control Features

If the user pulls one earbud out of their ears, music playback will be automatically paused . An excellent solution from Apple, because often we take one of the wired headphones out of our ears to hear the interlocutor. With AirPods, the song, video, will be paused, and you can hear the interlocutor without skipping a track and without taking your smartphone out of your pocket.

Pulling all earphones out of ears ends playback of the file .

To select wireless headphones as a sound source, click on the microphone icon and in the list that opens, click on AirPods. Now speak any command and wait for it to complete.

The sound of all incoming calls is automatically transferred to AirPods. For outgoing calls, the user can select a conversation mode. During the dialing step, there is a button to switch between the iPhone speakers and the wireless headset.

Connecting to Apple Watch

AirPods work not only with smartphones and tablets, but also with Apple smartwatches. You can connect a wireless headset to any watch model, regardless of their generation. You only need to update the IOS firmware to version 10 or 11.

Many users prefer to use AirPods with Apple Watch, because in combination, these two devices work as a full-fledged music player, which is convenient to take with you to the gym or on a trip.

Before connecting the headphones, we recommend downloading music and adding it to the watch's memory. To do this, add your favorite tracks to the "Music" section on your iPhone/iPad and sync your watch with your phone. In the window "My watch" select field "Music" and set up a connection with your smartphone.

Remember! Phone and smart watch data will only be synced when the watch is connected to the charger.

Follow instructions:

1 Make sure the headphones are charged;

2 In the clock settings window click on the "Bluetooth" field and in the available devices section, select AirPods;

3 On your watch, go to the main menu and click on the Music app icon;

4 In the playback source selection field click on the headphone icon;

5 Start any music track and enjoy your wireless headset.

Connecting with Android devices

One of the advantages of Apple's wireless headset is its interaction with devices that work. To connect the gadget with headphones, just open the phone settings, go to the Bluetooth settings window and select AirPods from the list of available devices.

It is worth noting that the operation of the headset with third-party operating systems may be accompanied by slight background noise immediately after connecting the headset.

sound

AirPods sound much better than EarPods. The hardware component of a wireless headset differs significantly from its wired counterpart.

Despite the fact that everyone is different in the presence of noise, Apple managed to create a model that is devoid of these shortcomings (if you use a headset with compatible Apple technology).

AirPods users note a more “matte” and clearer sound when compared to wired headphones. Testing the sound of music of different genres and directions showed that the bass is heard well, the performer's vocals are clear, and acoustic tracks and classical melodies are reproduced in volume and pleasant for the listener.

The playback quality is the same for music from the library, as well as for files from streaming services and third-party sites.

Operating time and experience of use

Apple says that the battery life of the headphones up to 5 hours in activity mode . As you know, company representatives have never tried to exaggerate the capabilities of their devices.

AirPods users do note that the headphones are discharged precisely after 5 hours of continuous listening to music.

In 5 hours, you can listen to an average of 5 music albums, which is an excellent indicator for the autonomy of a wireless headset.

Function "Quick Charge" allows you to fully charge the headset in 15-20 minutes. You can view the battery and dock status indicator by connecting the headphones to your phone.

It should be noted that AirPods not protected from moisture . Testing has shown that the headset does not break while walking in the rain or after hitting the gym. But you don’t need to swim with headphones - this will lead them to an unrepairable state.

Some users note that due to the strong magnet, the headphones are quite difficult to pull out. It will not be possible to do this with one hand, because first you need to turn the plastic holder down and pull hard on the headphones.

In general, they do not cause discomfort and provide a secure mount for the gadget.

The design of the gadget does not imply strong sound insulation, so you should not expect a vacuum effect from the headphones. Even with a loud volume of the song being played, you will hear voices quite well in a crowded place.

It should be noted the inconvenience of using Siri in a crowded place. If you control the assistant through the headset and are in a crowded place, the commands will be poorly recognized, because the AirPods will simultaneously record the voices of other people and extraneous noise.

Many users also note the convenience of fully automatic headphone operation. They do not need to be constantly enabled or disabled. The gadget itself will understand when to stop playing or pause the track.

Find My AirPods

If you do not put the headphones in a plastic box, you can lose them on the very first day after purchase. Each of the headphones is not physically connected in any way, and therefore it is more difficult to find them.

Especially for the purpose of finding a headset, Apple developed the Find AirPods function (similar to Find My iPhone). The online service tracks the position of your headset on the map in real time.

Note that gadget location tags are affixed only at the moment when it is fixed as connected to an iPhone, iPad or smart watch. If you dropped the headset somewhere on the street, you will not be able to find its exact position.

If the headset is still connected to the smartphone and is within 15 meters of it, you can play any track and

No, they (probably) won't fall out of your ears.

So... Apple decided to ditch the headphone jack in the new one, and the internet just exploded. Fortunately, the giant has come up with a solution - AirPods wireless headphones. But, to the chagrin of many, they do not come with phones. Instead, the earbuds are sold as a premium accessory that is over-hyped. The guys from BuzzFeed got themselves a pair of headphones to test and see if they are as cool and epic as Apple promised, and the editors of a useful site have prepared for you a translation of this test drive from

First of all, to activate the application, you need to touch the headphones twice at the right angle, and the application itself starts for a few seconds. The bottom line is that you then give Siri commands like "next track" or "turn up the volume," but let's be realistic, shouting those commands out in public doesn't seem very appropriate.

It would be great if other non-verbal ways to control the music were available, such as triple-tapping to increase the volume or other useful motions.
