Who's who in the smartphone market: IDC's big report. More than half of expensive smartphones in Russia are bought on credit Smartphone sales percent

Updated: friends, see also the new similar one for 2019.

In recent years, the smartphone market has certainly become the main platform for technological confrontation, where companies from small to large are fighting for users today. In order for you to better imagine the balance of power on it, we present a detailed rating of smartphone manufacturers for 2018.

The authors of these reviews often give places to brands based on their personal preferences. Our rating is based on the popularity of manufacturers and specifically on what proportion of traffic their devices generate on the network. To do this, we use data from the StatCounter analytical agency, which specializes in such studies.

We will analyze the first nine positions of the rating in detail, clearly showing how the share of manufacturers has changed over the past five years. As reference points, brand indicators for the first month of each year starting from 2013 and ending with January of this year 2018 were taken. The alignment of forces for the specified period changed as follows:

This is how the top smartphone brands have changed over the past five years

Below, we provide specific indicators for the main manufacturers, and towards the end of the text, detailed statistics of smaller companies and brands are presented.

In addition to dry numbers, in addition, we will try to give more facts and simple information about the participants in this rating and what they are currently focusing on the most advanced and most interesting. The material will be updated.

1st place: Samsung - the largest smartphone manufacturer, leader in the ranking

The undisputed leader of our rating is the Korean Samsung. According to StatCounter, today this giant alone controls almost a third of the entire smartphone market and is not going to move anywhere from the first place in the foreseeable future.

Samsung is the leader not only in the number of device sales, which account for hundreds of millions a year, but also one of the few companies that uses mainly its own components for them.

Galaxy S8 and S8 + are currently the manufacturer's current flagship smartphones

Samsung has its own displays, batteries, modules of operational and permanent memory, mobile cameras. Of course, there are Exynos processors with in-house developed CPU cores. The Koreans themselves also make many smaller components. All this is actively supplied even to direct competitors, on which Samsung also earns impressively.

Moreover, the Koreans not only design all this, but also produce it themselves at their own enterprises. This, combined with a variety of smartphones from the cheapest to premium models, allows Samsung to hold back both the American Apple and the strongest Chinese companies, remaining in first place. Over the years, Samsung's share has only grown stronger:

  • 01.2013 – 22,69%
  • 01.2014 – 27,85%
  • 01.2015 – 32,21%
  • 01.2016 – 30,56%
  • 01.2017 – 33,71%
  • 01.2018 – 31,81%

If Samsung’s entry-level and mid-range smartphone lines are very extensive, then everything is easier with flagships. Traditionally, two Galaxy S models are released in spring, and Galaxy Note in early autumn.

Note 8 (left) and Galaxy S8+

The latest Galaxy S9 Samsung introduced at the end of February at MWC 2018. In March, they went on sale. The novelties retained the 5.8 '' and 6.2 '' displays, having received, if not identical, but very similar to the S8 and S8 + design. The following innovations are implemented in the devices:

  • New Exynos 9810 processor (Snapdragon 845 for US and China);
  • stereo speakers;
  • New version of protective glass from Corning;
  • Aluminum 7000 series;
  • Improved oleophobic coating;
  • The fingerprint sensor is under the camera, and not on the side of it;
  • New main camera with adjustable aperture (choose between f/2.4 and record-breaking f/1.5). Best image quality in low light
  • Fast focus;
  • Shooting super slow motion video a la Sony Xperia flagships with additional options;
  • Create animated AR emojis using the front camera;
  • Android 8, Samsung Experience 9.0 out of the box;
  • Significantly improved face recognition;
  • Simultaneous scanning of the face and iris;
  • [S9+ only] Optional 256 GB internal storage for the first time (64 GB base);
  • [only for S9+] Dual main camera (adds optical zoom, effects, the ability to take two pictures at the same time with different types of camera modules).

Huawei first installed a dual camera in its gadget back in the first half of 2016, six months before the release of the iPhone 7 Plus. Moreover, the Chinese use a different approach to the second sensor than the company from Cupertino.

Flagship Mate 10

In Huawei smartphones, the second camera is monochrome and serves for increased light capture, while iPhones use a telephoto module for effects and optical zoom.

Obviously, Huawei in the new P20 Pro decided to combine the main camera, the second sensor for capturing light and telephoto a la iPhone. One way or another, we repeat, this is the first triple camera in the flagship of one of the key manufacturers.

Note that Huawei also helps to strengthen its position in the ranking of manufacturers and the Honor brand under its control, which this year introduced an attractive one.

4th place: Xiaomi is the fastest growing Chinese brand in the ranking

However, Huawei itself has someone to fear: while it is busy getting closer to the two leaders in the smartphone rating in 2018, it can overtake itself at this time. To do this, first of all, is within the power of Xiaomi.

Its growth over the past five years is even more impressive than that of Huawei. Having started our chosen reporting period with a meager 0.05% of the market at the beginning of 2013, five years later Xiaomi is close to reaching the bar of 5%. A hypothetical growth forecast for the next five years may show that we have a future leader at all.

  • 01.2013 – 0,05%
  • 01.2014 – 0,07%
  • 01.2015 – 0,52%
  • 01.2016 – 0,75%
  • 01.2017 – 2,16%
  • 01.2018 – 4,85%

However, compared to Huawei, the only Chinese manufacturer that has its own flagship processor today, Xiaomi has not yet closed this gap.

The company introduced its own Surge S1 mobile processor at the beginning of last year, but it definitely didn’t pull in premium smartphones, primarily due to the outdated 28-nm process technology. This year, Xiaomi intends to introduce Surge S2, which will be produced according to 16 nm standards, but it is also weaker than competitors who have already mastered 10 nm technology.

Mi Mix 2 is currently one of the most powerful and interesting devices among Xiaomi smartphones

But in full force, the mobile “heart” of Xiaomi can play in 2019 with the launch of the Surge S3 model, made by the manufacturer (TSMC) using the advanced 7 nm process technology. But this is just our guess.

This year, the company has already managed to introduce some of the flagships of Xiaomi 2018: Mi Mix 2S and even brighter smartphones. Today they are the pinnacle among the impressive arsenal of Xiaomi gadgets.

In the coming months, the Chinese company is rumored to have several more important premieres planned:

  • Redmi and Redmi Note update- updated smartphones of these lines will receive dual cameras even in younger versions and new processors. Some devices are waiting for a new design with a cutout at the top ( Updated: On June 12, Xiaomi introduced new ones - its most affordable smartphones);
  • Mi Note 5– skipping the Mi Note 4 due to the unlucky 4 in the name in Asia, the company is allegedly preparing to show the new Note 5 in the Mi Mix 2|2S design and with the Snapdragon 835 processor (the flagship of 2017 will make a compromise between performance and price of the device);
  • Mi Max 3- a phablet with a huge 7 '' display and a dual camera. Will be shown in July;
  • Poco F1- a representative of a completely new line of Xiaomi. The cheapest smartphone with the flagship Snapdragon 845 processor. Announcement in August. Updated: the device has been officially announced, see ours;
  • Mi Mix 3- the third generation of almost frameless flagship, which will get rid of the strip at the bottom and get the latest cameras with a wide aperture. A fingerprint scanner integrated into the display is possible. We are waiting for the announcement in the fall.

Mi Mix 2 live

Note that while Xiaomi is only fourth in the ranking of smartphones, the company, according to some reports, has already conquered the wearable electronics market with the help of its incredibly affordable Mi Band bracelets. Read more about the newest and most advanced of them in our separate article.

5th place: LG - Korean manufacturer No. 2

Under the powerful onslaught of Samsung and Chinese manufacturers, another major Korean player, LG, has been gradually losing ground in recent years. It is hard for the company to compete with competitors in both the budget and flagship segments. The fall is not very strong yet, but LG has few prospects to turn the tide of the “battle”:

  • 01.2013 – 2,79%
  • 01.2014 – 2,99%
  • 01.2015 – 4,01%
  • 01.2016 – 4,28%
  • 01.2017 – 3,87%
  • 01.2018 – 3,48%

In terms of flagships, LG has a particularly difficult time. The success of the G3 in 2014 was replaced a year later by the controversial G4, which was remembered for natural leather and a non-flagship processor. The smaller display, bet on modularity and a strongly protruding dual camera did not appeal to some users already in the G5.

The design of last year's G6, according to some observers, looked too plain against the background of the Galaxy S8 announced close to it. Not in favor of LG was the Snapdragon 821 processor from 2016, which the 2017 flagship had to be content with.

LG G6 - last year's flagship of the company

But with the latest G7, according to rumors, an even more entertaining story happened: even before the announcement, its prototype did not suit the company's bosses so much that they ordered to create the LG 2018 flagship from scratch, which is why the key presentation shifted from February to May. But the one shown ended up with a lot of truly special features, including a super-bright display and the most powerful sound for a smartphone.

In order to level out the various problems and delays of the G line, LG has launched another line of flagships since 2015 - V. While G is released in the spring, V will start in the fall. However, the latest devices of the V series did not seem to bring much success to the manufacturer either.

6th place: Oppo is one of the strongest smartphone brands in Asia

In sixth place in the ranking is another Chinese giant, which only proves how seriously Chinese companies are now storming the market. It is noteworthy that the StatCounter service “saw” this player only in 2015, and in January 2016 it already attributed to him almost half a percent of the world market share.

In a short reporting period to date, Oppo's share has grown more than seven times:

  • 01.2016 – 0,47%
  • 01.2017 – 1,9%
  • 01.2018 – 3,45%

Note that like Huawei's Honor brand, Oppo is also a brand owned by BBK Electronics.

This giant also manages the Vivo and OnePlus brands. If the share of Oppo alone at the beginning of 2018 was 3.45%, then Vivo - 1.35%, and OnePlus 0.19%. That is, in total BBK Electronics control about 5% of the world market.

As for Oppo specifically, even their range individually is very wide. The current flagships of the company - R11s and R11s Plus with remarkable large screens in 6 '' and 6.4 '' with an aspect ratio of 18: 9 and thin frames. Particularly noteworthy are the impressive dual cameras, where the resolution of the modules is 16 and 20 MPx.

However, this year, those smartphones should be replaced by R13 and R13 Plus. Also, Oppo, according to an official statement, intends to resurrect one of the most interesting lines of its devices - Find. These are the flagships, characterized by maximum performance and unusual features.

7th and 8th place: Lenovo and Motorola - an alliance of manufacturers

In seventh place is again a Chinese manufacturer - Lenovo. Constantly fighting with HP for leadership in the ready-made PC market, Lenovo was, alas, only seventh in the ranking of smartphones.

As the statistics show, Lenovo initially grew steadily in the smartphone market, but over the past year, growth has stopped. In many ways, this is facilitated by the significant strengthening of other Chinese brands, to which so far Lenovo is significantly losing in sales.

  • 01.2013 – 0,14%
  • 01.2014 – 0,36%
  • 01.2015 – 0,93%
  • 01.2016 – 2%
  • 01.2017 – 2,92%
  • 01.2018 – 2,87%

However, the interesting point is that in eighth place is Motorola, which was acquired by Lenovo from Google a few years ago. A brand recognizable in the West, an experienced team and a considerable portfolio of patents by the Chinese then turned out to be most welcome.

Motorola Z2 Force is the company's most powerful smartphone in 2017

That is, as in the case of the Oppo brand, whose owners have several other strong brands, here you also need to look at the situation as a whole. Under Lenovo, Motorola has managed to stop the decline in its positions, and over the past year even grow slightly in sales:

  • 01.2013 – 1,81%
  • 01.2014 – 0,89%
  • 01.2015 – 2,28%
  • 01.2016 – 2,18%
  • 01.2017 – 2,12%
  • 01.2018 – 2,64%

Today's Motorola has some interesting mobile camera solutions and the most advanced plug-in system of any manufacturer. For this year, the company is preparing both new G-series solutions and premium devices in the X and Z series.

9th place: Nokia - the former leader of the ranking of smartphones

Completes our Nokia rankings. The once absolute leader today does not even claim to return to the top five leading manufacturers. Unfortunately, Nokia has managed to become a leader in recent years only by the grandiose rate of decline:

  • 01.2013 – 22,15%
  • 01.2014 – 18,42%
  • 01.2015 – 11,24%
  • 01.2016 – 7,43%
  • 01.2017 – 3,41%
  • 01.2018 – 2,04%

The bet on its own operating systems, and later on Microsoft's mobile systems instead of Android, greatly crippled the company's position. After several years of close cooperation, in 2013 Nokia became part of Microsoft and finally focused on the release of Lumia smartphones based on Windows Phone, and then Windows 10 Mobile.

Lumia 950 is the last flagship of the "former" Nokia for Microsoft, although the Nokia brand itself was no longer used by that time

At first, everything was relatively good: in the best quarters of 2014, it was possible to sell up to 9-10 million Lumia.

However, in 2015, a serious decline began here. At the beginning of 2016, the company made the last gadget for Microsoft - the Lumia 650, and by the end of the year, sales of Nokia smartphones fell below one million per quarter.

After falling below 1 million devices sold in the quarter, Microsoft stopped keeping statistics on them

In the same 2016, Microsoft sold the Nokia brand, the feature phone business, and a number of other categories to the Finnish HMD Global. They became the new owners of the brand, starting to resurrect it in 2017 by releasing Android smartphones.

They partially succeeded. Today, the company sells about three million Android devices per quarter. According to analysts, the company completed the final quarter of the year, which falls on the season of Christmas sales in the west, in 2017 with a result of more than 4 million.

Sales of ordinary, mostly very cheap push-button phones are going even more briskly. The most famous brand, affordable price, high autonomy, compact dimensions and warm memories of such gadgets from the mid-2000s still ensure their sales.

The current Nokia 3310 will soon get a version with support for 4G

Nokia (HMD Global) is now one of the leaders in this still in-demand market, shipping around 14 million units per quarter (Q4 2017 – around 20 million) according to conservative estimates. Alas, in the StatCounter statistics, on which our rating is based, this type of device should not be taken into account.

This year, Nokia should update and expand the range of Android gadgets introduced in the past. Among other things, the company intends to experiment with larger and partially frameless screens.

In addition, some mysterious device is planned (possibly Nokia's flagship for the second half of 2018) with an unusual multifunctional camera, which no other manufacturer has the like.

The current flagship Nokia 8. Its successor is coming soon

Despite the strong weakening of positions in recent years, Nokia is still ahead of such well-known companies as HTC, Sony, Asus, Alcatel and Meizu in terms of smartphone sales.

Ranking results and smaller manufacturers (brands)

Visually, the entire presented top smartphone manufacturers are as follows:

Let us specify only two positions in it. Under Unknown (unknown), which occupies 7.5%, it means everything that the service fixes, but cannot be attributed to any brand. Most likely, these are some small Chinese companies and their devices that are produced for operators and sales networks in different countries.

Every fifth smartphone in MTS retail in Q2 2017 was sold on credit, follows from the materials of the operator. Moreover, the average cost of credit smartphones is growing: over the year it increased by 22% and reached 18,500 rubles. - and the average check for a smartphone in MTS is 10,500 rubles.

Now MTS sells on credit 60% of smartphones more expensive than 40,000 rubles. - a year earlier, the share of credit machines in this category was 32%, according to the representative of the company Dmitry Solodovnikov. MTS does not disclose the absolute sales of smartphones in its retail and their dynamics. According to Solodovnikov, Samsung, Apple and Huawei are most actively bought on credit at MTS: in the second quarter of 2017, 31, 44 and 17% of the devices of these brands were sold on credit in the operator's retail. A year earlier, 23% of Samsung smartphones were sold on credit, 11% - Apple, 9% - Huawei.

In the second quarter of 2017, credit sales of smartphones grew in Svyaznoy both in units and in percentage terms - in particular, sales of smartphones more expensive than 40,000 rubles. increased year-on-year by 2.5 times, says the representative of the retailer Sergey Tikhonov.

According to MTS, in the second quarter of 2017, a total of 6.2 million smartphones were sold in Russia, which is 12% more than a year earlier. In money terms, the market grew by 16% - turnover of 80 billion rubles. In July 2017, a little over 3 million smartphones were sold in Russia, follows from the material of a partner of several electronics manufacturers. The first place in total sales in pieces was occupied by Samsung (25.3% of the market), the second - by Apple (13%), the third - by Huawei (10.4%).

A similar picture is observed in all Russian retail, says Eldar Murtazin, a leading analyst at Mobile Research Group. According to him, in mid-2017, about 40% of smartphones were bought on credit; a year earlier, their share was about 26%. About 70% of devices more expensive than 30,000 rubles are sold on credit. – a year earlier, their share was twice as low.

According to Maria Shalina, director of telecommunications and financial services at Euroset, 35-40% of Russians buy smartphones on credit. The average price of smartphones sold on credit at Euroset increased by 18% in the second quarter of 2017 compared to the same period last year, she reports.

The growth of purchases on credit stimulates the availability and variety of installment and credit programs, continues Murtazin. In a crisis, people prefer not to spend all the money at once, but to give equal shares every month, he believes.

The installment program for two years without additional encumbrances in the form of purchasing insurance and additional services, launched in Eldorado in mid-June, increased smartphone sales by more than 50% in monetary terms, says its representative Yulia Zavyalova.

Among the reasons for the popularity of credit products when purchasing a smartphone, one can single out the desire of buyers to distribute costs over a long period, the increase in the number of partners providing installment plans in stores, an increase in the supply of credit products, as well as the popularity of loans for long periods and installments, lists Tikhonov.

It also affects the fact that people began to buy smartphones with a long service life, and these are again relatively expensive devices, adds Murtazin. This leads to the fact that the cycle of replacing old smartphones with new ones in Russia is lengthening. If in 2015 it was 13 months, then in 2016 it is already 18 months, and in 2017 it may reach 20 months, he predicts.

On our website every week there are materials dedicated to the release of new products on the smartphone market. The reader sooner or later has a question, what was or will be the market fate of the presented models? Which phone will become popular and break sales records, and who will gather dust on the shelves of stores and warehouses?

It is clear that a complete analysis of the indicators of the huge smartphone market requires too detailed immersion in the topic, but in this series of articles we will still try to answer the voiced questions. Let's see which smartphones are the most popular in 2018, fortunately, analytical agencies provided a lot of interesting information in the first half of the year and the second quarter.

Smartphone Market 2018: Leaders

So which smartphones are the most popular? As a first approximation, the answer is very simple - these are Samsung, Huawei and Apple. By the way, in that order. But the situation becomes more complicated, and significantly, as soon as we raise the additional question - where? It's one thing, Russia, Europe or India, and quite another - China or the USA. Therefore, we propose to proceed to the study of the topic in more detail.

Smartphone sales statistics 2018 in the world

The global smartphone market in 2018 is experiencing a decline in consumer activity. Phones are bought less often, although this is not true for all regions. In the first quarter of 2018, a serious drop in sales was observed in China, the USA and Western Europe. In Central and Eastern Europe, smartphone sales statistics are better - the growth trend continues here.

There has been a noticeable increase in sales of smartphones in Russia, although this is more expressed in terms of money, and not in the number of units sold. Russians began to buy more expensive smartphones, the flagship segment showed good growth.

According to the results of the second quarter, the global smartphone market in 2018 grew slightly, but compared to last year, the dynamics is still negative. In China, the world's largest smartphone market, phones are still being bought less often than before. Growth continues in Africa and Eastern Europe, but here too few smartphones are bought to somehow affect the overall sales statistics. Growth markets include India, which is the world's third largest smartphone market in importance (after China and the US).

All this information about smartphone markets and dynamics will help you interpret the results you see in the table more correctly. It presents the top ten manufacturers, leaders in the smartphone market in 2018.

According to the results of the second quarter, it continues to hold the first place. But the Seoul-based company sold 71 million units, down nearly 9 million from last year's second quarter.

The negative dynamics is partly due to the fact that the Galaxy S9 / S9 + were not received as warmly as the Koreans would like. By the way, it is for this reason that the new one was launched earlier than usual - in early August, and not at the end of summer. The second reason for the fall of the Koreans is that their position in China is very fragile, there is no Seoul company among the leaders in sales of smartphones in China.

Although it is now summer, industry analysts are only now considering the results of the first quarter of 2018. It became known which companies are leading both in the smartphone market and in terms of aggregate shipments of phones. After all, conventional push-button phones are still quite popular. Did the statistics we reviewed come as a surprise?

According to data reviewed by Ivan at gsmarena.com from analytics firm Counterpoint, Samsung was the global market leader in terms of smartphone and handset shipments in the first quarter of 2018. It should be noted right away that the published figures are not surprising.

During the period under review, Samsung shipped 78 million smartphones, which accounted for 22% of the total shipments (360 million smartphones).

Apple shipped 52.2 million iPhones for a market share of 15%. Third place is occupied by Huawei with 11 percent market share. This includes both Huawei and Honor-branded smartphones.

However, Apple dominates the North American markets, supplying approximately 40% of smart phones. Samsung is in second place with a market share of 27%.

Samsung (33%) leads the markets in Europe, followed by Apple (20%).

The cumulative indicator of deliveries of smartphones to the world market decreased by 3% compared to the corresponding period last year. At the same time, Samsung's shipments decreased by 3%, while Apple's shipments increased by 3%.

If we talk about the total number of shipments of phones, and not just smartphones, then Samsung again takes first place (17%), and Apple - second (11%).

To discuss the most attractive qualities for users of phones of the market-leading devices in this category of companies, readers can

In the 4th quarter of 2017, 403.5 million smartphones hit the market. Although Apple has caught up with Samsung in recent months, the Koreans have brought more devices to the market throughout the year.

Apple recorded a slight decrease in sales compared to the last quarter of 2016, but this did not prevent it from winning the title of market leader. This was made possible mainly due to new devices - iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. Although the demand for the new iPhone X was not as large as expected, Apple smartphones sold well. For all of 2017, Apple ranked second with 215.8 million units shipped to the market, up 0.2% from 2016.

Samsung remained the leader of the global smartphone market in 2017 with 317.3 million smartphones sold (up 1.9% yoy). In the fourth quarter, the Korean giant provided 74.1 million smartphones, down 4.4% compared to the result since 2016. Currently, the company is preparing the premiere of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 +, which may contribute to the return of the Korean concern to the first place.

Huawei is still holding onto the third place on the podium despite strong competition from other Chinese brands. Quarterly sales of 41.0 million units, down 9.7% from Q4 2016. For all of 2017, Huawei sold 153.1 million smartphones, up 9.9% from a year earlier.

Xiaomi is the only manufacturer in the IDC report that is growing by leaps and bounds. The company continues to focus on growth outside of China, with India and Russia being the largest markets for its products. The brand continued to increase its presence in retail, including with multi-format retail stores as well as the launch of new Mi Stores.

Oppo dropped to number 5 with 27.4 million smartphones in 4Q2017. At the same time, the company maintained a 12% growth in sales, delivering 111.8 million smartphones to the global market. Also, the Oppo brand has expanded beyond China, gaining footholds in other Asian countries such as India, Indonesia and Vietnam.
