Media players for TV AV output. Choosing a universal media player to connect to a TV

Studying various media techniques, we rarely return to almost the same device. But rare circumstances, such as the long and steady popularity of the product and its development, make it necessary to do so. This review is dedicated to such a case: we have already considered the Rombica Cinema 4K media player, however, major updates that have appeared, backed up by the reputation and long recognition of the product, oblige us to resume studying the player. However, given the absence of fundamental changes in the design of the set-top box (there is nothing to improve here), we will focus on software changes, and also conduct new tests using, accordingly, new tools. What if the results show something that we didn’t even know about before?

Completeness, design

For those who do not want to open a second tab in their browser, we will briefly list the main design features of the player.

The device comes in a rather voluminous box, on which information about its technical characteristics, interfaces, functions and pre-installed services is printed.

Completeness remained the same, all the main necessary accessories are included in it. Too bad there's no free hard drive here. However, the current cost of these media can at times cover the price of even an expensive player.

  • mains power adapter
  • infrared remote control
  • HDMI cable
  • composite audio/video cable
  • USB 3.0 cable
  • detailed user manual in Russian

There is a window on the front panel, behind which an infrared sensor is installed, which picks up signals from the remote control, a little to the side there is a button for turning on the device with a two-color LED indicator. Pressing the button causes the machine to turn on or off with complete boot or system shutdown cycles.

But what should be abandoned when releasing the next version of the device is the glossy cover of the case. Dust, fingerprints, easily formed scratches - this is the list of the nearest visitors to the player, unless, of course, it is hidden in some kind of protective niche.

However, it is quite possible to hide this particular player. Usually, media equipment is not recommended to be installed in close proximity to a wall or shelf. And even more so, it is not recommended to cover the case with anything. Simply put, air access must be free so that critical overheating does not occur. However, our player is unlikely to be afraid of high temperatures. Thanks to a well-thought-out ventilation system, the device can work even in a limited space that is not well ventilated. So, after five hours of continuous playback of “heavy” 4K content, individual parts of the player heat up to only 32 °C. The following thermal images were taken at room temperature around 25 °C.

View from aboveBottom viewBack view

It should be noted that the playback was carried out from a hard disk installed in the player with a capacity of one terabyte, old and high-speed (7200 rpm). If the player is equipped with a colder and quieter disk, then, most likely, the temperatures will be even lower than in our pictures.

Speaking of disks. The new version of the device's firmware made it possible to support almost all existing file systems, including even disks with HFS + (fans of Apple products will certainly appreciate this). By the way, the card reader available in the player supports SD memory cards of absolutely all varieties of this format that exist today, including SDXC Class10 U3 with a capacity of 256 GB, we specifically checked this using .

The right side of the case contains the mentioned slot for an MMC, SD / SDHC / SDXC memory card, two USB 2.0 ports for connecting external drives or peripherals, including a control one, and one USB 3.0 port for connecting high-speed USB drives.

On the rear panel of the player, the service connectors are located in the following order:

  • S/PDIF digital audio output (optical)
  • USB 3.0 port for connecting to a PC as an external USB storage device
  • LAN port
  • HDMI input
  • analog composite audio/video output (four-pin 3.5 mm jack)
  • HDMI output
  • power adapter connector
  • exhaust fan
  • swivel wifi antenna

On the left side of the case is a removable cover, fixed with a latch. Hidden under this cover is a SATA 3.5″ hard drive slot. There is an ejection spring inside the socket, and the disc is inserted without much effort and is fixed with an internal latch.

There are no additional fasteners for the disk, and they are useless - the HDD is held quite rigidly inside the case. The absence of additional metal parts of the case that could touch each other eliminates vibration and chatter during the operation of the hard drive.

In addition to the Realtek RTD1195 processor covered with a radiator, the following electronic components can be seen on the main board:

  • GL850G USB controller manufactured by Genesys Logic
  • two 4GB DDR3 Nanya NT5CB256M16CP memory chips
  • WiFi/Bluetooth module Realtek RTL8723BS

The included remote control is lightweight and miniature, and its rubber buttons give a distinct yet silent response when pressed. At the top of the remote control there is a block of learning buttons, on which you can “hang” the commands of absolutely any household appliance that perceives infrared commands, from a TV and an audio receiver to an air humidifier or air conditioner. A few more buttons are programmed to quickly launch YouTube, Kodi, UltraHD player, music player, SourceIn, and the settings menu. An additional button switches the remote control to mouse mode, while a cursor appears on the screen, which can be moved using the joystick-shaped block of arrow buttons on the remote control.

Settings, performance, operation

Information about the composition and characteristics of the player remains the same, despite the updated firmware. Even the display size is the same, uncorrected. Asserts that the screen resolution of this device is 1280×720.

Why, the player does not have any display! More precisely, there is no permanent, and cannot be. What you connect to the video output - this resolution will be. That's just in order to prevent collisions, the developers go to the trick, forcibly introducing information about a certain virtual display into the firmware of the device. This information, often not true, does not affect the performance of the device. Perhaps, only in one case, the numbers indicated by the developer somehow manifest themselves: when testing with the help of test applications. Which run a particular task, based on system information. For example, the 3D accelerator testing package activates the test with a resolution of exactly 1280×720, and not with the one connected to the player's TV. Otherwise, this technical information will not be relevant to the operation of the player.

Checking the speed of network connections did not bring any new results - only the previous ones obtained during the study of the same player, albeit with an earlier firmware version, were fully confirmed. This means that the firmware does not play a role in the operation of network adapters, from which, apparently, all the available potential is squeezed out. It also means (to the great joy of the author) that no negative changes have occurred in his local network since then. It remains only to give the speed values that are obtained when copying from the HDD player to the network storage and back.

And just like before, the player plays 100-megabit videos from network drives, shot with 4K camcorders and cameras, including those with the HEVC codec, without much difficulty.

Now let's touch on the issue of playback more closely, but this time let's take a closer look at the formats. There is a well-known Antutu test suite known as a universal test app for Android devices. For some time now, a branch of this package has appeared - a program designed to test support for video formats. Wise, right, it's time! Of course, this program was immediately installed on our player and a video playback test, simply called: Video Test, was launched.

According to the test results, the program issued the following verdict:

It follows from it that the player fully supports 24 formats, partially coped with four formats and two formats turned out to be too tough for the player.

Here you need to digress a bit in order to broaden your horizons. So, using the word "format", we mean a combination of several parameters of a video file: container + video codec + audio codec. Anyone with imagination can easily guess how many "formats" can be obtained by mixing these three basic factors in their various variations. More precisely, this way: he will guess that it is impossible to calculate the exact number of combinations. After all, there are dozens and dozens of containers and codecs alone. The Antutu developers thought about the same, limiting themselves to a set of 22 options, which they consider to be the most common codecs and containers.

A relatively detailed breakdown of the formats for which the player was tested for the ability to play is given in separate plates:

Full SupportPartial SupportLack of support

For convenience and clarity, we list these problematic formats, for the playback of which the player received an average and unsatisfactory rating. Partially supported formats that are played with some deviations from the norm (no picture or smooth playback) are the following:

One could agree with all this if one is used to blindly trusting what has an official appearance. However, trust - but verify. Here we will check.

First of all, the same test files were found, with the help of which the application makes its measurements - they are stored in the working folder of the program, in the player's memory. These videos are short segments from the cartoon, not very suitable, in our opinion, for determining the "smoothness" of playback. Based on the parameters of these files, we made our own test files, which repeat the desired combinations of containers and codecs. It remains only to start playing the resulting set and try to fix the shortcomings with your own eyes.

Well, it worked! It turned out to fix that the last two formats, with which the player could not cope at all, also turned out to be inedible for him. He simply failed to open them, which was briefly reported on the screen. But with the first four formats that allegedly played poorly, it's a big question. We didn't see any shortcomings. Moreover, when playing a TS-file, the picture was quite present, as well as the sound.

Well, let the final results remain on the conscience of the inspection program. In any case, the player in question scored enough conditional points to get close to the top ten - as many as 737 "parrots"!

For what else, besides playing an existing video, you may need a media player? Why is it called universal? Yes, if only because the hard drive that is installed in the device can - and should - be used not only to store the media library. But also to replenish it. No matter how outraged the holders of countless copyrights, but you can not prohibit the very possibility of quickly obtaining the desired content. This, of course, is about the notorious torrents. The torrent application built into the firmware is not much different from a regular PC client. Here, in the same way, it is allowed to manage downloads remotely, and the exchange speed not only surprised - it amazed. In fact, at the limit of the channel that the provider provides.

The content obtained in this way is automatically indexed and subsequently displayed in the built-in file browser. Which, it should be noted, constantly but imperceptibly scans available drives for the presence of media content, after which the selected content opens in the built-in player or graphical viewer.

Of course, there is one more way to brighten up leisure and keep the player busy. These are streaming Internet media resources. Probably, first of all, Internet TV should be attributed to those. Broadcasting of such television is carried out in different ways, some TV channels even release their own applications that allow you to watch live broadcasts. A large part of TV applications is paid or shareware. The most preferred option for watching TV seems to be a method based on the same technologies as the torrent client. Here, in the Peers.TV application pre-installed on the player, the user will find an almost unlimited list of TV channels for every taste.

But torrents and watching video/TV is trite. But, for example, such a task, which usually requires expensive specialized equipment - video surveillance. Those who are "in the know" probably know the secret of how an ordinary smartphone can be turned into a DVR with a camera. However, a smartphone is not a very reliable device; you cannot entrust it with round-the-clock work with recording and, moreover, continuous broadcasting of a video stream. Unlike a smartphone, an Android-based media player is much more successful in this task. Especially if you have a capacious - up to 8 TB - hard drive and without the risk of overheating. You just need to connect any webcam to the player and install one of the many applications that help you realize the task of video surveillance. True, not every program / service is free and sufficiently reliable or skillful. In contrast to the unpretentious in appearance, but powerful in functionality, the free program of the domestic developer IP Webcam.

General settings with camera selectionRecording settingsActive mode

Perhaps the most important feature of this application is the ability to work in the background, almost imperceptibly to the user.

Finally, such a hardware-based feature as the creation of a constantly working Wi-Fi access point in the presence of a wired network will allow you to create a second Wi-Fi network in the place where the player is installed. A great chance to expand the area of Wi-Fi coverage in a multi-room apartment.

However, a significant part of users can go much further in their fantasies. What is remarkable is that only their own laziness can interfere with the implementation of their tricks. Well, in extreme cases, the lack of need for a particular technology or function. For example, if there is no more than one TV in a house or apartment, then a DLNA server is not needed at all. If there is a second or more TV with the Smart function, on which you also sometimes need to view local content, then it is not at all necessary to buy an additional player for each TV. It is enough to install a simple application on an existing Android set-top box that implements a technology that allows you to transmit and receive various media content over a local network, displaying it in real time.

One of the simplest such applications is My DLNA server. There are no settings in it as a class - this is so as not to be scared. And three huge buttons - so as not to miss, respectively.

As soon as you press the main Start button, the application will start indexing any media content available within local reach (internal memory, connected disk, and other media), and when selecting a source, the Smart TV will see our player under the modest name Local Media. By selecting this source, the user will see the contents of the player on the TV screen and will be able to view any supported content.

Of course, there are more advanced applications for such tasks, where you can not only set a different name for the DLNA server, but also select folders for indexing or fine-tune network settings.

In the same way, it is allowed to install a SAMBA server to “share” all the contents of the player and media connected to it over the local network, as a result of which the player becomes a regular network storage accessible from any computer. If you want to remotely access the player's files and folders, you can use an FTP server that will work no less successfully than the network add-ons listed above.

Finally, the universal player in question can perform another function, which is usually implemented by special gadgets, USB dongles, which are connected directly to the HDMI input of the TV. We are talking about technology (in our case, EzCast), which is based on a direct Wi-Fi connection between two devices, such as a player and a smartphone. Obviously, an intermediate link in the form of a router with its Wi-Fi point is superfluous here, since communication is carried out directly between devices. This connection allows you to transfer from one device to another any multimedia signal in real time. To implement this function, you will need to install the EzCast application of the same name on your smartphone, and then launch the EzCast Screen application installed on the player. Connecting two devices is extremely easy - just one touch on your smartphone.

After the devices are instantly connected, the TV to which the player is connected will duplicate the display of the smartphone, displaying everything that is displayed on it. Thus, being in the company of friends, you can show on the big screen the content stored in the smartphone - photos, videos, etc. without tedious preliminary copying or wired connection. If you think about it, this wireless video transmission can be used for more specific purposes, even for work. For example, to display presentation slides, diagrams, drawings and graphs on a large TV screen. And this technology looks absolutely invaluable if the mobile device does not have a video output, but there is a vital need to transfer live video from the smartphone display to a large screen or capture card. For example, from a thermal imager connected to a smartphone.

For a larger view, click the Original Size button.

Perhaps, one could give a dozen more examples of using a universal stationary Android set-top box, but the imagination of millions of users will surely turn out to be richer.

conclusions

Of the minuses of the design, one can only recall an obsessive quibble regarding the glossy design of the lid. More to complain about, alas, nothing. All other features, with all the desire, cannot be called shortcomings - these are obvious pluses:

  • hardware decoding of all common formats, including Ultra HD 4K HEVC (H.265)
  • 3D video support in Side-by-side, Top-to-bottom, MVC (BD 3D ISO) formats
  • automatic frame rate switching when playing various video content
  • Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby True HD, DTS HD multi-channel audio output
  • gigabit ethernet
  • USB 3.0 ports supporting storage drives and various peripherals
  • support for hard drives up to 8 TB with any file systems
  • programmable remote control
  • good cooling system

The cost of the device is not negligible, but it is strictly proportional to its functionality, and you will hardly find a cheaper offer among devices of a similar class. The considered media player has been popular for a long time quite deservedly, because it was developed with a serious functional reserve. Thanks to this stock, the player is destined to constantly evolve along with the Android application market. And only a probable, but very slow obsolescence of the version of the operating system on which the set-top box is running, can stop this development.

In recent years, the move away from physical media has reached its apogee, and today few people use the already obsolete CDs. Both audio and video content have successfully migrated to incorporeal file formats stored on hard drives or received in real time via streaming services. At the same time, the quality of multimedia is steadily growing and you can easily find music with a resolution of 24 bit / 192 kHz or even DSD 128, and TVs and projectors have learned to show 4K video.

It is quite natural that with the transition to a new digital era, special devices were required to work with this type of data. And of course they showed up. They were network audio and media players. The first of them are intended exclusively for sound reproduction and are aimed primarily at audiophiles, but the second ones are quite omnivorous and will suit everyone, especially since their cost has recently fallen significantly. The average media player is capable of playing a variety of content from almost any source, be it removable storage, NAS, built-in hard drive or the Internet, supporting both wired and wireless data transfer. It is convenient and easy to use, and the resulting quality is at a very high level.

In fairness, it should be noted that expensive modern top-end TVs have a built-in media player on board, and a regular computer can perform its functions, but each of these options has advantages and disadvantages. With all the convenience of using an all-in-one device, TVs often, although they support working with the main formats, but by no means with all the audio and video codecs that are found within the same media container in various variations. In particular, this applies to multi-channel DTS sound, with which most representatives of this class categorically refuse to be friends. It will not be possible to install a hard drive inside, instead of which you will have to use a USB-HDD or NAS.

In contrast to them, computers work with any codecs and formats, but without an additional upgrade, they cannot boast of the convenience of media players. First, you will have to get a more practical graphical shell for remote use and buy a remote control. Secondly, in order to properly output multi-channel audio through the HDMI interface, you will need to purchase an appropriate video card, which can also cost a significant amount. And finally, a computer, especially a powerful one, often produces a lot of noise that is not conducive to pleasant viewing. However, for those who watch movies only occasionally and are not particularly picky about comfort or versatility, both of these options can suit, but if you want to get a convenient and multifunctional device for working with any content, you should pay attention to a network media player.

The arrival of a new player

Asian manufacturers were among the first to actively produce network media players, among which Dune HD, which still exists on the market, can be considered a pioneer. In 2006, she introduced her first DVD player, which could play not only a standard video disc, but also various third-party formats that were not very popular at that time. After that, the Blu-ray drive came to replace, eventually giving way to the hard drive. The capabilities were supplemented by modern interfaces and wireless modules, as well as support for multi-channel audio and 3D video. In this form, they are produced to this day, and the quality of the products of this Taiwanese brand is very high.

The second company that contributed to the development of media players was the Korean DViCO, which produced devices under the TVi X brand. From the very beginning, it decided to use a hard drive as a data source, so its model range was full of unusual shapes, which became possible due to the absence of the need to use a CD -drive.

By the end of the 2000s, another Popcorn TV player appeared on the market, a distinctive feature of which was not only the ability to play files from a pre-installed hard drive, but also access to various online services such as radio and television, which allowed it to achieve high popularity in Europe and the USA, where the speed of Internet access at that time was already at a level sufficient for normal operation. In Russia, the device became known only later, when the Chinese company BBK began to produce it, and dial-up was replaced by more or less sane broadband access.

Design features

All network media players are developed on the basis of a chipset that is responsible not only for decoding the incoming signal, but also for supporting data input / output interfaces such as SATA, USB, HDMI or LAN. Additional functions like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or DVB-T/T2 are implemented by connecting the appropriate modules. The filling is packed in a suitable case, supplied with power, connectors, remote control and released for sale. Proceeding from this, it becomes clear that the main capabilities and quality of operation of such a device largely depend on the chipset model used in it.

The vast majority of devices on the market are based on chipsets produced by Realtek and Sigma Designs. The first of them has in its assortment entry-level modifications installed in inexpensive players, while the second specializes in higher-quality and functional options that differ in significant cost. Sometimes you can also find AmLogic and Boxchip products, but they are budget analogues of the old Realtek developments and are not of particular interest.

The Sigma Designs lineup consists of 12 chips, united in five lines. All of them have support for HDMI 1.4 with CEC, high-definition video with 12-bit xvYCC color reproduction, stereoscopic 3D video (RealD), DTS, DD, DTSMA, TrueHD audio decoding and work with 100 Mb, less often 1 Gbps networks. Each of them also has additional features, which can be found in more detail by reading the specification.

There are three chips in the Realtek assortment today, the initial of which is equipped with an HDMI 1.3 port with CEC, but does not come with a network card. On average, a PCI Express slot and a 1 Gb network interface are preinstalled. The top one is also equipped with a 3D accelerator, can broadcast a stereoscopic signal via HDMI 1.4 interface with CEC and decode 3D.

Representatives

To date, there are many models on the market, both from industry pioneers and from newcomers like 3Q and iconBIT. In addition, the giants ASUS, Sony and others have also taken up their production. If we talk about classification, then it is fully determined by the use of one or another chipset in the design, on which the possibilities depend. Conventionally, all media players can be attributed to one of three price groups: cheap, medium and expensive.

Budget models costing up to 7 - 8,000 rubles will allow you to watch Full HD video and listen to music in the most popular formats. Gradually, devices with the ability to work with 4K resolution appear in this category. Dolby Digital and DTS multichannel audio codecs are almost always supported. Various devices are oriented towards using external drives, internal hard drives, usually purchased separately, or connecting to a local network via an Ethernet port. There are modifications with a Wi-Fi module and a version in the form of an HDMI stick. The remote control is a must. As representatives, you can designate ASUS O! Play Gallery or IconBIT Movie FHD T2.

Mid-price devices costing up to 15,000 rubles work with all formats, decode 3D video and multi-channel audio, and are also equipped with a 1 Gbps network controller. Almost all of them allow the installation of a hard drive, have their own Wi-Fi module and a DVB-T/T TV tuner. The number of connectors for switching here is usually the maximum, and the menu and interface are well developed. Complementing all this is the presence of Smart TV technology, which provides simple and convenient access to network services. Featured models: ASUS O!Play HD2 and IconBIT OMNICAST UHD.

Premium devices can do it all, but do it much better. To do this, manufacturers are introducing various functions to improve picture quality, expand the color range, and so on. It is not uncommon to find in them the possibility of installing a pair of hard drives, and the execution is similar in shape to classic CD players or audio components. As in expensive devices for working with sound, in such media players, careful attention is paid to the set of components and circuitry. In general, the premium class in its purest form. An example is the Dune HD Solo 4K model.

Conclusion

If you want a convenient and functional device that can work with most available formats, connect to the Internet and decode stereoscopic 3D video, then there are many worthy contenders in the mid-price segment. For those who do not need wide opportunities and 3D, they may well choose a budget model. And, finally, fans of watching movies on the big screen, having a good audio system in their arsenal, will appreciate the advantages of expensive devices that provide a significant increase in quality.

By using a compact media player, you can save space, expand the functionality of your TV and play multimedia content on your TV from your computer, NAS (home server) or the Internet. I’ll immediately note a couple of models for those who want to buy the best multimedia devices in their class: ASUS O!Play Air HDP-R3 and WD TV Live.

Network media players can be used to store and play home multimedia content paired with a TV (monitor) and speaker system. The media player is able to transfer movies, music and images from the PC directly to the TV screen in optimal quality, while the computer can be used for work at this time. Moreover, network player can be equipped with a built-in hard drive or connected to an external drive. In this case, it is not even necessary to turn on the PC to view it, especially since many players allow you to browse the web.

Another 1.5 years ago network media players equipped with a built-in TV tuner, and also had the ability to install hard drives and an optical drive, but now, choosing a media player for yourself, such slots to expand the capabilities of the device are rare. But in the models that are currently on the market, the Wi-Fi module is installed by default, which cannot be said about their predecessors. True, to play Full HD video wirelessly, you will need a modern wi-fi router so that you are not disappointed with breaks when watching. The network media player will be especially useful for users with old LCD TVs, as they can act as an alternative to panel models with. New models of media players support a large number of Russian-language Internet services and allow you to view streaming video from the Internet.

Of course, all functionality media player and even more, it can replace an inexpensive, or laptop, but the media player has a more compact size, low price and ease of use.

How to choose a multimedia player? Criteria for choosing a network media player

The criteria that you should pay attention to first of all: comfortable operation, convenient menu navigation and support for Internet services. media player Western Digital TV Live perfect as the best choice for the above characteristics: miniature body, full Russification of the menu, correct display of Russian file names and tags. And the equipment of this player is not lame. For those who are often going to enter information on the TV screen, a model with a full QWERTY keyboard (for example, ScreenPlay TV Link DX) is suitable.

Internet services of modern media players

Users who are attracted to Smart TV should take a closer look at the media player LG ST600 supporting this service. Plus, you'll also get LG Apps app store, with which you can download the necessary programs + Flash-enabled browser on board LG. Other media devices rarely boast of having it at all. The device is controlled from a remote control or a regular mouse from a PC via a USB port. And the “Smart Share” function makes it possible to transfer content from tablets and smartphones directly to the TV screen.

I think that a particularly important criterion when choosing a media player is the set of interfaces and ports it supports. Mandatory HDMI and USB, it's always a good idea to add something else (optical, card reader), for the reason that it will be possible to use media player in conjunction with various devices. It is better to think about the interfaces that you will need in advance, it is difficult to take into account all the subtleties during the purchase. There are fewer and fewer models with a built-in hard drive, but a USB connector for connecting an external HDD is the standard. Some users will need composite and component video outputs to connect the player to a TV; be careful, check their presence in the technical characteristics of the devices.

An important parameter is the "omnivorous" media player. This is very important for those who store and play various media files, neglecting Internet services. For such users, I would recommend a media player. Inexperienced users even often evaluate devices by the list of supported media containers and codecs. Not to be misled: a media container is the format of an audio or video file, and a codec is the format of the audio or video stream in it. Let me clarify that support for the mkv container does not mean that all files with the *mkv extension will be played on the device (for example, an audio track may not be supported). Do not forget about the release of new firmware for multimedia devices.

Who needs a full-fledged operation of the device with Blu-Ray media, then take a closer look at Netgear NeoTV 550 with excellent performance (high-performance processor on board Sigma Designs SMP8642). Opponents will like the device's support for ISO images of Blu-ray discs (you can also add here). It is also possible to select the required M2TS file manually, for those who get rid of unnecessary materials after downloading the image. Dear fans of Blu-Ray discs, pay attention to the processor...

Compact media players for home theater

Now let's consider compact media players Apple TV, Raspberry Pi and iconBit Toucan Nano SX. You can buy them at a price of 4000 to 5000 rubles. These multimedia devices will help solve the problem of the main media player in your home theater.

In order not to use your SMART TVs only for watching TV channels, you can expand their multimedia capabilities using a functional media player that will allow you to play familiar multimedia files on a large TV screen without problems, like Allshare, Home Media Server, etc.

Admit it, even an expensive TV with Smart TV functionality cannot have all the necessary functionality: someone will not be satisfied with a browser, someone with a remote control, and someone with limited memory when watching online video. What can I say, often the multimedia player built into the TV does not support any format, not to mention the fact that application stores may offer an insufficient set of services to fully use your TV. Choice of compact media players solves the problem of lack of functionality.

AppleTV media player

You should immediately warn if you are not a user of devices from the company Apple TV, but stick to using a PC more, then bypass Apple TV. But if you own an iPad or iPhone, then Apple TV is your device. The latest generation of Apple TV has received Full HD support and a new user interface. We carefully examined this elegant little box.

The device from Apple, as always, demonstrates exemplary ease of use:

  • connect Apple TV to the mains
  • connect the HDMI connectors on the TV and on the set-top box
  • and enter your Apple ID

As for connecting the media player to a home network, the multimedia player supports connection using LAN or Wi-Fi. As for the operating system, fans of the hardware from Steve Jobs will be familiar with everything. The media player is controlled by a small remote control, or by the free Remote App for iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, which you can download from the App Store.

On Apple TV, you can rent a huge number of movies in HD and SD quality from the iTunes Store. If you have a fast Internet connection, you can watch movies right after purchase. A little frustrating is the fact that in the HD section there is no option to choose between 1080p and 720p. Speaking of rental prices, the average value for watching a movie in HD quality is 299 rubles, for renting it is 99 rubles, but not everyone can afford to buy movies.
The library stored on your iPad or iPhone can be transferred to the media player via a wireless network using AirPlay - this function is supported by all devices with iOS versions higher than 4.3. For those who are going to play movies from their network attached storage (NAS), it is worth considering that Apple TV does not support all codecs and video container formats, but content downloaded from iTunes will be played without overlays.

As online services, you can use the iCloud cloud, which synchronizes files stored on Apple devices. Applications from the AppStore will expand the functionality of the device: YouTube, Vimeo, or Stream HD. By the way, the USB port on the AppleTV case is used for service purposes, it will not work to connect a USB hard drive to it.

For those who like to delve into technology and set everything up manually, I will advise an inexpensive Raspberry Pi, which is a small but complete computer for 5000 rubles. Add a case, power supply and a 2GB SD memory card to it, then combined with Raspmbc or OpenELEC Rasberry Pi software, you have an excellent multimedia player.

I can say with confidence that this is a full-fledged media center for 5000 rubles. As a software, it is enough to use a multimedia shell.
The Raspberry Pi is a small motherboard with the necessary interfaces and components. For full use, you will need a microSD memory card, a micro-USB power supply and a compact case. The above amount includes all necessary components. To connect to a wireless network, an optional WLAN USB dongle is available to solve this problem. Assembling the portable is quite simple: you just need to install the board in the finished case. This is a device for enthusiasts, as its capabilities directly depend on your desire to "tinker". That's why I think Raspberry Pi such an interesting solution as a media player.

First, install one of the XBMC-based programs - Raspbmc or OpenELEC (I posted links to them above). The media player is controlled using the familiar keyboard and mouse. Alternatively, you can use the dedicated Raspberry Pi Remote Control app for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. The performance of the device is very decent, it starts to slow down only when playing video content with a resolution of 1080p and a high bitrate (for those who do not understand, small DVDRip and BDRip will work without problems). The media player allows you to play files both over the network (via shared folders or UPnP AV server) and from USB devices (flash drives and hard drives).

For XBMC and its modified variants used in the Raspberry Pi, there are all kinds of extensions - addons. By the way, the Raspberry Pi case costs from 700 rubles.

For those who are interested in RaspberryPi, it will be interesting and mini computer BeagleBone Black with a single-core TI Sitara AM335x (1 GHz) processor based on the ARM Cortex-A8 microarchitecture. You can also install an XBMC based skin on the BeagleBone Black.

Iconbit Toucan Nano XS - media player for Android OS

I also want to draw the attention of applicants for multimedia players to iconBit Toucan Nano SX running on Android OS 4.0.4. This compact multimedia center will cost you less than 4000 rubles, which is not limited to playing movies, music and photos. Owners of Android devices know that any device running on this OS will help turn the Google Play online store into an almost full-fledged PC.

As with all Android devices, the first time you connect and set up, you only need to select a language and link the device to your Google account. The compact media player connects to your home network via LAN or a built-in wi-fi module, and the image and sound are transmitted to the TV via an HDMI cable. The Toucan Nano XS itself isn't a complete media player, but the Google Play Store will fix that issue. It is enough to download a software media player, I would recommend XBMC for Android, or MX Player (the required codec is downloaded from the Internet during installation).

Controlling with the remote control takes some getting used to. When using the XBMC or VLC media player, you can use special applications to control the iconBit Toucan Nano SX. Alternatively, you can purchase a wireless multimedia keyboard with an integrated mouse function that makes it easier to navigate the Internet. Excellent performance, even 1080p movies in the MKV container do not slow down. Let me remind you that on Google Play you can rent and purchase HD and SD videos at prices that are similar to Apple's iTunes Store.

I think I will constantly update and supplement the article so that you can always get up-to-date information when choosing a device. I will be happy to answer any questions questions when choosing a media player.

Many modern TV models already have built-in devices for playing multimedia content, but their functionality may be lower than that of a separately installed media player for a TV. By connecting additional equipment, you can significantly expand the capabilities of your TV, get access to social networks and various Internet services, even from the screens of the simplest models. Therefore, many users are thinking about buying an additional TV set-top box.

Modern multimedia TV set-top boxes have replaced VCRs and DVD/CD players. Today they are:

  • read almost any video and audio formats;
  • able to open any image;
  • reproduce information from a variety of sources (portable portable storage devices, mobile gadgets, etc.);
  • broadcast streaming video;
  • enable users to access the Internet through a browser, use a large number of entertainment services;
  • support uTorrent, 3D, Wi-Fi and gaming features.

Specific functionality may vary by model.

In appearance, these are small devices with different ports and a control panel. The latest versions may have LCD display, user touch operation tool. Connection to a TV is made via an HDMI cable, wireless connection or component jack.

Some devices fit and to old kinescope types of TV. In this case, information is transmitted via S-Video or a composite slot. It should be understood that the functionality of such a pair will be limited. Since if the media player has any capabilities, then such a TV will not be able to reproduce, for example, the FullHD or 3D format. Of course, users of modern LED TV models have more opportunities.

Composite RCA and S-Video output

Is it worth buying a media player for a TV if you have a computer

At first glance, it may seem that such a device is a waste of money when you have a PC or laptop. After all, the computer just performs these functions. But not every electronic computing device is capable of transmitting high quality picture and sound as widescreen LED TV will do, especially in high definition HD and FullHD, as well as Blue Ray.

You can connect a laptop or system unit to a large screen via an HDMI cable, but this is not always convenient. In addition, you often have to rack your brains over setting up device synchronization, especially for playing streaming video or recording TV broadcasts on your computer's hard drive.

Another plus in favor of a separate TV set-top box - silent operation. Since the computer is equipped with a cooling device, it creates a certain amount of noise during operation. The advantages are obvious, so for connoisseurs of excellent video playback quality, you should think about how to choose a media player for your TV.

Connecting the computer system unit to the TV

What criteria should you pay attention to when choosing a modern TV set-top box

Today the market is represented by a wide range of digital players for TVs. To determine the choice of the most suitable device model for yourself, you should pay attention to the following criteria:

  • media player interface;
  • possible playback formats;
  • control system;
  • sources and media of content (support for Internet services);
  • additional functionality.

Media player interface

Even before sending to the store for a new device for your TV, you need to find out the availability of ports and connectors that television equipment has. This information is important for choosing how to connect the set-top box. The most optimal and popular option today -HDMI-cable, such a connection will provide high quality video transmission and multi-channel audio. This digital connector allows you to play HD and FullHD resolutions available for modern LED TV models from LG, Samsung, Sony and other manufacturers.

For older TVs, the set-top box may need to support the following connector types.

  1. Component output. For synchronization, many well-known "tulips" are used. A feature of this connection is the transmission of individual components of the video signal over several cables, at the end of which there are three RCA connectors. In this case, only the image is transmitted, the sound in stereo format is connected separately.
  1. Composite output. The principle of video signal transmission is similar to the previous one, but the image quality is worse. If possible, it is better to use an analog interface.
  2. Svideo. Such a connector is rarely found even on CRT TVs, but it is still present in some models. The design feature and quality of the video signal transmission are somewhat better than the composite one. It is based on two dividing lines, which are used to transmit luminance and chrominance signals in an image.

In addition to the ports for connecting the media player to the TV, it must support and additional set of interfaces. Modern models, in addition to the mandatory HDMI and USB, may have an optical or card reader for connecting other storage media. Not all devices provide for a built-in HDD, but most allow you to connect a removable hard drive (two USB connectors are required for quality work).

It is important not only to think about how to connect the set-top box to the TV, but also to synchronization with other devices. All the necessary connectors must be present in the technical specifications of the device. Also, if necessary, you should take care of purchasing additional adapters that are not included with the media player.

Possible playback formats

Without exaggeration, we can say that modern multimedia TV boxes play almost all video and audio formats, and also open any images. Even the most budget devices will play popular AVI, MKV, MP4. Therefore, through most set-top boxes, you can watch movies in the BDRip (-AVC) or DVDRip standards.

The entire list of readable formats is indicated in the technical specifications.

But many inexperienced users are mistaken, evaluating the device according to the list of supported formats, not taking into account the concept media containers and codecs by equating them. Simply put, if the set-top box supports playback of the mp4 container, this does not mean that all files with this extension will be played in high quality. They can open, for example, without sound or with noise, if the audio track is not supported. Since the concepts of media container and codec have different definitions. In the first case, this is the file format, in the second, the stream format in it.

For those who want to watch movies on their home theater in high quality or format 3D, you should choose advanced reading formats. For example, it is not uncommon for 3D movies to have an ISO extension or several folders with files of various formats. And support for the ISO BD3D extension is not present in all models.

Control system

In addition to supporting standard media formats and optimal loading times, a media player must have Russian-language menu with convenient control and navigation are fundamental factors in the analysis of this criterion. Users have the ability to control the media set-top box both from the device itself and from the remote control or through a mobile gadget. There are also models that provide support for a QWERTY keyboard and computer wireless mouse. These accessories will come in handy when working with social networks or an Internet browser through a TV screen. For convenience, you can use a universal remote that allows you to control both the set-top box and the TV at the same time.

Sources and carriers of content (support for Internet services)

The set-top box can play media content from various media.

  1. Built-in HDD. In this case, the media size will be important. A plus built-in hard drive– all multimedia content is stored in one place and is available at any time.
  2. A portable storage device (flash drive, external hard drive) connected via a USB connector.
  3. Memory cards for cameras, camcorders, mobile gadgets. Their connection is made either through a built-in or external card reader, or through a cable.
  4. Hard drives of devices connected to Wi-Fi (if wireless connectivity is available).
  5. Online services such as You Tube, IVI, Google Video, Apple Trailers, Meta Cafe, etc. (if connected to the Internet).

The possibilities of media players are constantly expanding. Modern models allow you to read letters received by email, play online games, find out news and weather forecasts, view new films that are just appearing in wide distribution, etc.

Additional functionality

More advanced devices give users more options. Therefore, if the purpose of the purchase is to make Smart TV out of your Samsung or LG TV, it is better to give preference to set-top boxes with:

  • opportunity home network connections(via wireless connection or Ethernet cable);
  • Internet access to be able to use popular online services, social networks, IP-TV;
  • modern operating system to be able to update it and install additional software.

The choice and purchase of a media player, even for modern TV models, will be very helpful. Especially for those users who appreciate high-quality images and multi-channel sound. In addition, such a device can turn a simple TV into a Smart one, and in models with such a function already built in, it can significantly expand its capabilities. After all, even an expensive home theater may not have all the necessary functionality, and the right multimedia TV set-top box can solve these problems.

What is a TV media player? Probably everyone has a distant idea of what kind of device it is. Multimedia technology has been and will be associated with watching movies, TV shows, listening to your favorite music. Media players at the time of the appearance on the electronics market provoked the transformation of televisions from ordinary television signal receivers into a home multimedia entertainment center. At the same time, this function is more often assigned to the software built into smart TV. At the same time, media players are popular in the market, since they are universal and allow replacement with a more modern model.

As a carrier of information, not only a CD, a flash drive, which is familiar to most users, can be used, with the help of which multimedia content is played. Modern devices work with Internet access due to the support of Wi-Fi technology. Therefore, they provide the opportunity to watch series and movies on large Smart TVs. Media players provide an opportunity for users to enjoy a high-quality picture.

Previously, the number of media players and the number of manufacturers was insignificant. It is easier for a modern user to get confused in the abundance of both companies and the number of models available. A TV set-top box, with the right choice, will be easy to use and multi-tasking.

Plasma TVs are produced with an already built-in player, but you need to understand that their functionality is lower than that of a separately purchased device.

The acquisition of any technology can be approached in different ways. Someone takes into account the available budget. But this option of choosing a device is not always crowned with success, since the functionality of inexpensive models leaves much to be desired. Next, consider the key points that you need to pay attention to when choosing a media player.

The range of available interfaces during the period of digital broadcasting is gradually losing its positions, TVs are considered to be a candidate for connecting a media player, in which there is an HDMI input and support for resolutions from HD Ready and higher.

The connector will allow you to get the maximum quality in the video signal transmission process, which makes it easier to output multi-channel audio to your home theater. Digital sound can be transmitted to acoustics in a modified format - this is a characteristic feature of HDMI.

If you analyze the question of how to choose a media player, you need to dwell on the size of the device. The dimensions of the new models depend solely on the number of connectors for connecting to the TV, and the compartment for the hard drive.

It is not necessary to choose a model with a HDD connector only, since this option may become unclaimed in the near future. The constant need to connect a media player to a computer, remove the drive to transfer new content, work with a torrent - all this takes a lot of time. Playing content over a local network is one of the fastest ways.

Players without the function of supporting data exchange over the network are a rarity. Even inexpensive models can offer their future owners an Ethernet connector or Wi-Fi support. When Wi-Fi is at home, it is logical to immediately purchase a model with the option of accessing home network storage.

An Android-based media player with Internet access is an additional support for various functions: a Facebook client, VK, Skype and various instant messengers.

Let's move on to the supported formats. Over the years, devices have appeared that support formats such as:

  • Divx/Xvid;
  • H.264;
  • MPEG1/2.

In terms of sound, there are also high-quality audio formats here: DTS, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD.

Fans of “full-format and surround video” may face problems. Since movies that support 3D are not often found as an ISO extension or as a file folder. In this case, it is necessary to select models of media players that support such standards as ISO BD3D, while navigating through the movie should be carried out at the expense of Lite.

Control methods in most cases are represented by: remote control, computer keyboard, mouse (in some models). The last two options make switching the TV comfortable.

For a competent choice of a media player, you need to consider the following criteria:

  • formats with which the device works;
  • hard disk memory;
  • number and types of connectors;
  • availability of support for Internet services;
  • menu navigation;
  • Russian-language interface;
  • budget size.

Options for connecting a media player to a TV

For those who prefer simplicity in operation, it is better to opt for Full HD media players. Most models connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi. The device is connected to the TV using special interfaces.

When it comes to connecting the player to an outdated TV model, the situation becomes more complicated here. Since, due to the lack of HDMI in the old TV, you have to choose one of the analog interfaces:

  1. Composite output, or "Tulip". It has been used for over ten years to output video signal, stereo sound. The sound quality is significantly reduced, it is better to dwell on alternative options.
  2. component output. It also uses several cables or "tulips", which contributes to image quality, and is considered the best among the available options.
  3. scart. To a greater extent, this is not an interface, but "container" to transmit an RGB image. It is rare in modern devices.
  4. S video. This connector is characteristic of outdated computer video cards. Rarely used by TV manufacturers.

Also used for HDMI connection. It is standard, and identical for all equipment. When there is no HDMI, you can use "tulips".

The best models of media players

When choosing which media player to buy, everyone initially pays attention to the company that produces this product.
