How to rotate a photo in Photoshop. How to rotate an image in Photoshop

Greetings!
Adobe Photoshop is, without exaggeration, a powerful tool for working with photographs and graphics. And about one interesting opportunity, which not everyone knows about, I want to tell in this material.

We will talk about the reversal of the image in 3D space. Yes, Adobe Photoshop from CS5 Extended (CS6 Extended and later) allows you to rotate an image this way. Naturally, you won’t get a special 3D volume, but the effect still turns out to be quite interesting and can be useful in a wide variety of work scenarios.

How to rotate an image in Photoshop in 3D space

Open the image you want to rotate in Photoshop. In the top menu, click on 3D and in the opened submenu follow New mesh from layer -> post card.

Adobe Photoshop will then enter the 3D image editing mode, in which you can rotate the image in any direction with the mouse - display the image sideways, from below, from above, etc.

Having expanded the object, you need to fix the result and exit the 3D mode.

This is done simply - right-click on the edited layer and select Rasterize 3D.

Interesting effect, isn't it!?

With this tool, you can make, for example, interesting collages of several images, decorate postcards, etc.

If you need a classic image spread, then in Adobe Photoshop this is done in the top menu. Image -> Image Rotation.

Also in Adobe Photoshop there is a keyboard shortcut ctrl+t- highlight the required element or area and press this combination. As a result, you can, among other things, expand the editable area or the entire image at once.

Summary

Now you know how to rotate and expand an image file in Adobe Photoshop quickly and effortlessly. The pseudo 3D effect, as you can see, is quite easy to implement using this powerful tool.

If you have any questions, you can ask them in the comments.

In this program, it is also quite common to select different parts of a drawing in order to cut, replace, or rotate them. The article, Selecting Objects in Photoshop, describes various ways how this can be done.

And now let's figure out what can be done if you need to flip the image in Photoshop mirror or a few degrees. This will come in handy if the picture or photo stored on the computer is rotated 90 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise, due to the fact that during the shooting the person held the camera or phone at the wrong angle. Or you need to make a collage of several photos or pictures. Then the frames rotated at different angles will look more interesting on it.

How to rotate a photo through the menu

Open in Photoshop the image you want to work with. Next, click on the “Image” menu item at the top and select “Image Rotation” from the list. There will be several different items in the additional menu.

Here you can choose to rotate 180 degrees or 90 degrees clockwise (“CW”) or counterclockwise “CCW”. "Flip Canvas Horizontal" (Flip the canvas horizontally) - used if you want to rotate the mirror. Accordingly, “Flip Canvas Vertical” (Flip the canvas vertically) is a reflection of the image vertically.

By selecting the Arbitrary item (Arbitrary), the following window will appear. In it, specify the exact angle to rotate the picture or photo in the "Angle" (Angle). Then mark with a marker in which direction to rotate: "CW" - clockwise, "CCW" - counterclockwise. Click OK.

The pattern will be flipped by the specified angle: either exactly 90 or 180 degrees, or a custom value.

Using Free Transform

You can also rotate an image in the following way. But before activating this mode, you need to make sure that the layer with the picture that we will twist is not locked - there should not be a padlock opposite it.

In the example, the layer is locked. To remove the lock, double-click on the layer. This window will appear. You don't need to change anything in it, just click "OK".

Now press on the keyboard "Ctrl + T". A frame with markers will appear around the object. Move the mouse cursor outside the picture to any marker. When the cursor becomes an arrow, press the left mouse button and rotate the picture. After turning, release the button.

In the free transform mode, you can rotate the image as you like, or specify the exact rotation value in the corresponding field of the top menu.

If, while rotating the picture with the mouse, hold down and hold "Shift" on the keyboard, then the rotation will occur at a clearly defined step: plus 15 degrees each time. That is: 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 degrees and so on.

By activating free transform, you can rotate the active layer separately or a pre-selected area on this layer. To exit the mode, press the "ESC" button.

Rotate a layer with the Rotate View tool

Another method you can use is the Rotate View Tool button. You can select the appropriate menu item on the toolbar, or you can use hotkeys and press "R".

Then move your cursor over the picture. Click on it with the left mouse button and, without releasing it, rotate it. A compass-like arrow will appear. When you rotate the image to the desired angle, release the mouse button.

Choose the method that suits you to rotate the desired image layer. Rotate through the "Image" menu is suitable if you have one layer: an image or a photograph. If you are making a collage, then it is better to use free transform so that you can rotate a certain layer or selected object in the picture in Photoshop. And use Rotate View to see how the layer will look at a certain angle.

Often, beginner Photoshoppers do not know how to rotate an image in Photoshop. In fact, everything is extremely simple. There are several ways to rotate a photo in Photoshop.

The first and fastest way is the free transform function. Called by pressing a keyboard shortcut CTRL+T on keyboard.

A special frame appears around the object on the active layer, which allows you to rotate the selected element.

To rotate, move the cursor to one of the corners of the frame. The cursor will take the shape of an arc arrow, which means it is ready to rotate.

Pressed key SHIFT allows you to rotate an object in increments of 15 degrees, i.e. 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, etc.

The next way is the tool "Frame".

Unlike free transform "Frame" rotates the entire canvas.

The principle of operation is the same - we bring the cursor to the corner of the canvas and, after it (the cursor) takes the form of a double arc arrow, rotate it in the desired direction.

Key SHIFT in this case it works the same, but first you need to start the rotation, and only then clamp it.

The third way is to use the function "Image Rotation" which is in the menu "Image".

Here you can rotate the entire image 90 degrees clockwise, counterclockwise, or 180 degrees. You can also set an arbitrary value.

In the same menu, it is possible to reflect the entire canvas horizontally or vertically.

You can also mirror an image in Photoshop during a free transform. To do this, after pressing the hot keys CTRL+T, you need to right-click inside the frame and select one of the items.

Practice and choose for yourself one of these ways to rotate the image, which will seem to you the most convenient.

Good day to all, my dear friends and readers of my blog. Today I want to tell you how to rotate an image in Photoshop in the other direction, mirror or even just a few degrees. I recently thought that I am writing all sorts of different articles about Photoshop, but sometimes I forget to highlight the simplest points that can cause a stupor for some users. And then the questions start coming. So. I am sure that after this lesson you will not have any questions about this.

Why you need to flip the image

There can be a lot of reasons for the image reversal:

  • Wrong or framed
  • The horizon is littered
  • Creating your own composition
  • Rotate individual elements when editing or creating collages
  • Image taken upside down or sideways
  • And much more

Therefore, I will try to tell in such a way as to touch on all aspects.

How to rotate an image 90 and 180 degrees

If you wish, you can simply rotate any image vertically, horizontally, or even 180 degrees. If you have previously read my article about that, then most likely you already remember how this is approximately done, but if not, then read on.

When you have Photoshop open and some picture is loaded there, first make sure that it is not a background layer. And if your uploaded image is the background and the only layer, and you need to rotate it, then do not forget to uncheck the layer itself, which is located in the palette on the right side.

Now go to the main menu and select the item "Editing""Transformation". There you will see several rotation options at once: Rotate sideways 90 degrees clockwise and counterclockwise, as well as rotate 180 degrees, that is, upside down.

How to flip a photo

If you do not need the rotation itself, but a way to mirror the image in Photoshop, then this is done a little differently.

When you open a photo, click on the menu "Editing" - "Transform". Among other items, you will see two interesting ones: flip horizontally and vertically. They are responsible for the mirror reflection of the image.

Many will say that what's the point if you can use the 180 degree rotation function. But if you compare these two functions, you will see that the position of the pictures is absolutely opposite, that is, mirrored. You can see for yourself.

free turn

Well, now let's look at how to make turns by any number of degrees to adjust the position to your needs.

To do this, again go to and select "Free Transform". But it will be even easier for you to press the key combination CTRL+T. Probably many already know or understand what needs to be done next. But if there are none, then I'll tell you.

You simply need to hold down the left mouse button on any of the four corners of this photo, and then just rotate the mouse and adjust it to the position we need. Here is just one nuance appeared. If we rotate the photo, then it turns out that it goes beyond the boundaries, and if we apply such a rotation, then part of the image will be eaten. What then to do?

There are several ways out of this situation:

You need to reduce this image using the same free transform so that it fits into the frames.

If you do not want to reduce anything, then you need to increase the size of the canvas. To do this, go to the main menu and select the item "Image" - "Canvas Size". Better yet, use the keyboard shortcut ALT+CTRL+C.

When the canvas settings open in front of you, then increase the size by the amount to be sure that everything will now fit. And don't be afraid to overdo it. Well, leave the location relative to the center on all sides, as shown in the screenshot. Then just click OK.

As you can see, I overdid it, and that's okay. What do you think we will do now? That's right, let's use . And now we just cut off everything superfluous with it. Here, by the way, the developers helped us a lot. When we begin to bring the "Frame" closer to any of the rotated corners or edges, it will automatically be magnetized. Thus, we ourselves do not need to adjust anything to the millimeter.

After we have cropped everything, we just have to use the right format and enjoy.

Of course, all these tools are much more convenient to use when the image is not on the background layer, but on a separate one. And, for example, I do this when I create pictures for the announcements of articles on the blog. It turns out that you do not touch the background, but work with other pictures. It is much more convenient and easier.

And of course, this method is indispensable if you need to rotate a single element in an image that you inserted independently. For example, you want to attach a beard to a man, and his head is tilted. Then it will be easier to rotate only the beard so that everything is clear.

How to rotate an image if the horizon is littered by several degrees

It often happens that the photograph is taken very crookedly and the effect of the so-called littered horizon appears. Moreover, it seems that it deviates only a few degrees, but it already looks ugly. In order to fix everything, you can use the above method, but I want to offer you something interesting and unusual. We will try to rotate the image in Photoshop using the ruler.

In general, you can read more about fixing a littered horizon in this article. There's a whole lot of ways, both with and without Photoshop.

The disadvantage of this method is that part of the image is eaten during alignment. But in most cases, this is not the most important part.

How to rotate canvas in photoshop

In addition to rotating the image itself, you can rotate the canvas, or rather the display view.

As a rule, this tool is used in cases where you need to work with images that are located on the side or upside down. Therefore, instead of moving your head around or using tools like transform (which is extremely inconvenient), it's better to periodically rotate the canvas. The image does not suffer, and it is much more convenient for you to work.

But I want to tell you that if you want to learn Photoshop from scratch in a short time, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with this video course. It is simply amazing and I consider it the most intelligible, simple and informative in the segment of the Russian Internet. Everything is laid out on the shelves and after viewing it, you are unlikely to have any questions left.

Well, in general, this is all that I would like to tell you about today. I hope that you liked my today's article, and now you understand how to rotate any image in Photoshop using various methods. And of course, be sure to visit my blog again. Believe me, it will be even more interesting. Good luck to you. Bye bye!

Sincerely, Dmitry Kostin.
