Full screen smartphones. Smartphones with a "high" screen: up and down

Let's start with the fact that the image consists of the smallest elements - dots or pixels, and, depending on the diagonal of the display (and its physical size), the pixel can have a different size. There are also various pixel shapes - rectangular, square and even octagonal (the latter, however, only happens with plasma TVs). Well, the screen resolution is, in fact, the length in pixels of each side.

In modern smartphones, you can find a resolution of 320x240 pixels. (the most budget models for children and the older generation) up to 3840x2160 pixels. (usually flagships). The larger the screen and the lower its resolution, the larger the pixels and the more blurred the image. For example, if you take a 6-inch screen with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. (HD) and 1920x1080 pixels. (Full HD), then in the first case the picture will have a lower definition.

But is it worth chasing higher smartphone screen resolutions up to 4K? Yes, there are times when they are really required - for example, for immersion in virtual reality, where the display is almost close to the eyes and we distinguish the smallest pixels (about smartphones for VR). But with the rest of the content, everything is not so simple.

Pixel density

Here we cannot do without the concept of pixel density (PPI) - the resolution of the matrix, which is the main indicator of how clear the screen of a device is. PPI is calculated based on the diagonal resolution, its width and height, as well as the diagonal of the matrix in inches.

The more pixels fit on an inch of space, the smaller they will be, and the image smoother and sharper; the richer the color rendering, the better the brightness and contrast. Moreover, a high PPI makes fonts appear smoother on the screen, which improves the readability of text. For example, PPI at 2560x1440 pixels and 5.5 "diagonal will be 534, and if you take a slightly larger screen (5.7"), then at the same PPI resolution will drop to 515, and the picture will lose clarity.

The average user heard about this concept in 2010 with the release of the iPhone 4 with Retina display. Then Apple said that the maximum pixels per inch that the human eye can distinguish is about 300. Columbia University also calculated the pixel density limit for the human eye, and it turned out to be slightly higher - 350 PPI. And in 2014, LG showed off three screens - with HD-resolution and density of 269 PPI, with Full HD and 403 PPI and with QuadHD (its then flagship LG G3) and 538 PPI. And the difference between them was noticeable, the picture on each subsequent screen looked clearer and more high-quality, and this was visible to the naked eye.

DisplayMate's Raymond Soneira claims that a person with perfect vision can "see" densities of up to 600 PPI, which makes the idea of launching smartphones with 4K and 800 PPI not so crazy. Now the pixel density of modern flagships has already exceeded 500 PPI, but at some point, with the naked eye, users will no longer distinguish the advantages of a small, in fact, high-density smartphone screen.

Smartphones with the clearest screens

We did not trust the manufacturers at their word and independently calculated the pixel density for each of the smartphones. As it turned out, here the vendors did not exaggerate their merits and indicated the correct values (with corrections for rounding to the nearest integer), although, for example, many got excited with the “framelessness” (in our material).

Samsung Galaxy S9

Samsung Galaxy S9 has become the leader in screen clarity - its pixel density is 568 PPI. Due to the smaller diagonal (5.8 "), he bypassed his" brother "S9 +, which has the same resolution (2960x1440 pixels), but a larger diagonal (6.2"), and therefore received 531 PPI. The smartphone is made in a "frameless" design and, fortunately, without the now popular "bangs" - this is a plus for the manufacturer.

Users note that the display's colors are really very juicy (it's still a proprietary SuperAMOLED matrix), brightness and contrast are at a high level. It behaves well in the sun, does not glare and remains readable. By the way, the screen resolution can be reduced if desired, increasing the battery life.

LG G6 () is only slightly behind the leader with 565 PPI (diagonal - 5.7 ”, resolution - 2880x1440 pixels). LG called its screen FullVision, indicating that the user will have more space to watch videos, web pages and text. All data can be divided into two windows - in LG smartphones this function is supported by a large number of applications. Although the IPS matrix is considered less bright than AMOLED, its quality was still positively appreciated by users. There is support for Dolby Vision and HDR 10.

By the way, the LG G7 ThinQ was recently introduced, which boasts a higher resolution - 3120x1440 pixels. But due to the increase in diagonal to 6.1 ", the pixel density of his screen is slightly lower - 563 PPI.

Although many have questions about the strategy of HMD Global, it turned out to be quite successful and took the third place on the list with a result of 554 PPI. Even though its screen has a lower resolution (2560x1440 pixels) than smartphones that are in the top lower, it benefits from a small display diagonal of 5.3 inches.

The design, however, is not at all bezel-less - there are very noticeable stripes on the top and bottom of the display. But we liked the quality of the screen - it is bright, contrasting, with natural color rendition and good viewing angles. And in the evening, you can activate the night mode so that your eyes do not get tired.

Vivo xplay 6

Vivo Xplay 6 is quite far behind in terms of indicators from the top three - it has 538 PPI. But for the fact that he got here, one should thank the average screen diagonal (5.46 ") and high resolution (2560x1440 pixels.). In appearance, it immediately becomes clear who the designers got their inspiration from - the display curved around the edges repeats the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. And the AMOLED matrix itself is also from a South Korean manufacturer, so it is not surprising that the screen produces a high-quality picture.

Curved edges of the screen are made for a reason - there is a panel that is completely similar to the Edge from Samsung. The display resolution can also be downgraded to Full HD to increase autonomy, but the settings do not allow you to calibrate the colors.

Google Pixel 2 XL

Another "clear smartphone" is an interesting, but not too popular last year's flagship Google Pixel 2 XL. It has a large diagonal (6 ") and a high screen resolution (2880x1440 pixels), and a pixel density of 537 PPI. The POLED matrix made by LG is installed, which in some places is inferior to SuperAMOLED from Samsung, but there is no inherent acidity of the shades. , if you deviate from the right angle, then the colors begin to invert and go into blue.

Also at the very beginning of sales there were complaints about graininess and the appearance of artifacts, but the manufacturer assures that this should have been corrected by software updates. Many more users are unlucky, and in some places the screen of their devices goes into a pink shade.

The same pixel density (537 PPI) is also found in the second LG smartphone on our list - the LG V30 +. Like the Google Pixel 2XL, it has a 6 "diagonal and a resolution of 2880x1440 pixels. The matrix type is again POLED (On-Cell touch). But, apparently, LG still makes better displays for its flagships.

The screen here is bright, with high-quality anti-reflective coating and balanced colors. There are separate profiles for displaying color - for surfing the Internet, watching movies, reading books. HDR is also supported, and the Always-on-display feature, which is present on all modern OLED screens, has different settings: shutdown time, brightness, content display, etc.

HTC U11 Plus

And the third in a row a smartphone with a 6-inch screen, a resolution of 2880x1440 pixels and a pixel density of 537 PPI is HTC U11 Plus. The proprietary Super LCD 6 matrix, according to the manufacturer, provides natural color reproduction. Such a screen is very popular with those for whom Samsung displays are too bright. And for lovers of juicy shades, the screen will seem too faded, but the eyes do not get tired of it.

The smartphone has an analogue of the Always-on-display function, but since This is an LCD matrix, only the clock and information icons will be displayed, and the battery will drain much faster. An interesting mode "With gloves" with increased screen sensitivity, as well as the ability to select a color profile and separately change the settings in it.

There is support for HDR10 dynamic range, but only at the hardware level. With new system updates, it should appear programmatically.

Tonino Lamborghini Alpha one

Together with the next smartphone on the list, Tonino Lamborghini Alpha one, we are invited to the premium segment, offering, along with an impressive appearance (liquid metal body and leather trim), decent performance. 5.5 inches diagonal and 2560x1440 pixels create a pixel density of 534 PPI.

The AMOLED matrix demonstrates good contrast and saves battery power, the brightness margin is also decent. As with all AMOLED screens, colors are not inverted at different viewing angles. You can play around with the color temperature and saturation settings if you like.

Huawei P10 Plus

Huawei P10 Plus has the same screen characteristics as Tonino Lamborghini (except that the matrix is IPS), and therefore demonstrates 534 PPI in the same way.

There was a smartphone, and we noted that the display has good brightness and a decent anti-reflective coating - it can be used comfortably in the sun. Viewing angles are wide, and you can adjust the color temperature yourself or choose a preset profile.

ASUS ZenFone AR ZS571KL

Well, the ASUS ZenFone AR ZS571KL smartphone is specially "sharpened" for virtual and augmented reality, and therefore it has a large and clear screen with a diagonal of 5.7 inches and a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels, and its pixel density is 515 PPI.

The top of the screen is covered with 2.5-D Gorilla Glass 4. You can turn the device into a VR helmet using its own packaging - it opens, a smartphone is inserted there - and forward, towards virtual adventures. True, VR mode drains the battery very quickly - just like games, by the way.

Which smartphone do you think offers the best value for money? Write to us in the comments.

The screen is the face of a smartphone, it occupies most of the front surface, it is necessary to control the gadget and perceive all information. It would probably be superfluous to list all the display functions, since each of us perfectly understands how important this element is in a smartphone. Manufacturers spend millions of dollars on display improvements, delighting users with increasing resolution, improved color reproduction, new technologies and constantly expanding viewing angles. While it is not difficult to find a model with a decent display among more or less expensive smartphones, in the budget segment, as a rule, screens are presented with the minimum parameters necessary for modernity (IPS technology, HD resolution). We do not argue - this will be enough for many, but our goal today is to find interesting inexpensive smartphones with a good screen, preferably Full HD.

Let's start by declaring variables, i.e. let's figure it out what display parameters should you pay attention to:

 • screen diagonal, i.e. its size. A large display makes it more comfortable to read and watch videos, but too large will turn your smartphone into a shovel. The diagonals of the screens of modern smartphones start at 4.7 inches, and it is difficult to find such ones. The most popular format is not even 5 inches, but 5.5 inches. There are smartphones with a diagonal of 6 dm and even 6.5 dm. Here everyone chooses for himself, but before buying it does not interfere with holding the device in his hand in order to understand how convenient it will be to use it. In the budget sector, smartphones with a wide variety of diagonal are presented;
 • screen resolution - the number of pixels that form the image. The more there are, the better and more solid the picture will be, and the smaller the individual pixels of the image will be. Manufacturers indicate the number of pixels horizontally and vertically in a similar form 320 * 480. Resolution has become the standard for budget smartphones HD – 720*1280 , and it is quite enough if the screen diagonal is 4.7 inches or less. Screens with a resolution of 540 * 960 are still found in the budget sector, but with a diagonal of 4.7-5.5 inches, individual pixels are very clearly visible, so we don't even consider such models. If the diagonal is 5 inches or more, it is better to look to the side FullHD screens, their resolution 1920*1080 ... They allow you to create the perfect high-quality picture;
 • pixel density Is an indicator that depends on the diagonal and resolution. It determines how many pixels in the image are per inch of the screen. It is proved that at a density of 300ppi and above, our eye cannot distinguish between the individual components of the picture (pixels) and perceives the whole picture. For example, this is why Apple does not use a resolution higher than that which can provide 300 ppi at a certain diagonal in its smartphones. Other manufacturers have taken a different path, offering a pixel density of 500 ppi or more, which is achieved by using screens with high resolution (2K or QHD - 1440 * 2560, 4K or UHD - 3840 * 2160). What is it, an advertising move or concern for the user, you decide, but we advise you to pay attention first of all to the pixel density indicator, and not to the resolution: if it is 300 ppi or more, we can safely take it. True, with the rapid growth of screen diagonals, it is not easy to find an inexpensive smartphone with such an indicator. Simple rule: if the diagonal is less than 4.7 dm, the resolution can beHDif more - desirableFull HD, and they are already in budget devices;
 • screen type... We will not go into the specifics of constructing an image with each type of screen and will immediately move on to the facts. TN-matrices- the cheapest, not very contrasting, have poor color rendering and small viewing angles, but cheap. They are practically not used today. IPS-matrices - the standard for many smartphones. Such a screen gives good color rendition, viewing angles and contrast, but consumes more power than AMOLED-the matrix... The latter, due to the peculiarities of the structure, do not need additional illumination, they give the deepest black color, excellent color rendering, consume a minimum of energy. Previously, AMOLED was installed only in the most expensive smartphones, but today everything has changed somewhat.

It is better to take a smartphone with a screen made by oGS technologieswhich provides lack of air gap between the sensor and the display. This allows for better color reproduction, wider viewing angles and a more compact screen. However, if the glass breaks, you will have to change the entire screen unit. Today, most smartphone screens are manufactured using OGS technology.

It will not be superfluous in the smartphone protective glass and oleophobic coating... The latter makes it much easier to keep the screen clean. This year's fashion trend is frameless screens - is matched to budget smartphones. It is unusual to use such devices, but with the standard dimensions of a smartphone, you can get a screen with an increased diagonal.

Now let's get down to the fun part and arrange smartphones from the cheapest to slightly less expensive. All of them will cost you up to $ 130-150.

The smartphone was released in 2015 and was premium at that time. Today it is still on sale and in demand, and if you get a discount, you can buy the device for $ 85-90 at all. The gadget received metal body, fingerprint scanner and average filling, memory can be expanded. The shooting quality is satisfactory, but in the dark it leaves much to be desired. The pride of the model is the screen, large, with good resolution and wide viewing angles, it processes 10 simultaneous touches. At the minimum brightness level, the display allows you to comfortably use it at night, but if you look at the device in detail, you can find fault with the color rendition and the lack of an oleophobic coating. The rest of the gadget is not bad for its value.

OUKITEL U20 Plus

When buying in Russia, the device will cost $ 110-120, you can even find it for $ 100, but when ordering from China, you can save a couple of tens of dollars. The minimum price for it is $ 88. The smartphone itself began to be sold this year, he immediately surprised with his flagship manners. The manufacturer packed the device in a nice case with 2,5 D-screenprovided fingerprint scanner and dual camera, which is still a rarity in the budget segment. The large screen with Full HD resolution turned out to be very, very successful: the color reproduction is close to the most natural, the brightness is adjustable over a wide range, and even in direct sunlight, the information on the display remains readable, the viewing angles are wide, the screen processes up to 5 simultaneous touches. It is possible to customize the color rendition and other display parameters for yourself. In terms of other parameters, this is an ordinary smartphone, the capabilities of which, however, will be enough for the average user.

Leagoo KIICAA Mix

The device came out just the other day and became one of the first budget frameless smartphones... Previously, such devices have already been presented in the inexpensive segment, but the screens left much to be desired. The company offers an excellent frameless machine at a price of $ 105-120, and this is a modern trend. The screen occupies almost the entire front panel - a small space remains only at the bottom, where it is located fingerprint's scanner. The quality of the screen is excellent: the brightness is adjustable in a wide range, it will be convenient to use the device both at night and in bright light. Let's add here excellent performance, decent memory, dual cameras with good photo quality, and you can get, probably, the most interesting offer in this price category, but there were some nuances.

To expand the boundaries of the screen, the designers had to abandon the light and proximity sensor, move the peephole of the front camera to the very bottom, and the earpiece - to the upper end. This solution causes a lot of inconvenience, at least at first. But the conversational speaker turns on together with the usual one during sound reproduction and it turns out something like stereo. Another unpleasant feature is that the USB Type-C port is used to connect headphones. But the device is light, cheap, has a large screen and small dimensions, fits comfortably in the hands and flies in most applications.

Xiaomi Mi4

The screen of this smartphone received protective Gorilla Glass III and oleophobic coating, on which the finger slides more easily, and all dirt is wiped off easier. With a 5-inch diagonal Full HD resolution, you can create an incredibly clear picture. By the way, the very fact that the device uses a 5-inch screen is an obvious plus. for those who are looking for a more or less compact smartphone... The display recognizes up to 10 touches, has decent viewing angles, an impressive margin of brightness and anti-reflective coating... This is one of the best screens in the segment, so you can forgive the device for the fact that it came out in 2014 and then, by the way, was a flagship. Until now, the model is actively sold in stores. The smartphone is productive, the Sony camera module allows you to take great pictures. There is fast charging function... The downside is the lack of a memory card slot.

Prestigio Grace

Even if this is not the most powerful smartphone in our rating, it can boast AMOLED-matrixso the image quality is very high. A seemingly small battery capacity will be enough for an average operation of 1-1.5 days, since the screen is economical here.

Alcatel POP 4S 5095K

An interesting inexpensive device that will be of interest to those who are guided by the manufacturer's name when choosing. The company is well-known, regularly releases new models, and this time it presented a good budget device with a decent screen and average filling. The chip of the device is the presence fingerprint scanner... The stock of technical capabilities will be more than enough for most users.

Leagoo T5

The device surprises, first of all, with the memory reserve, and then with the display parameters. Considering the price, we get a very decent device. Among the advantages metal body, dual cameras, fingerprint scanner... As a result, we get a very solid device at an indecently low price for it, however, it will have to be ordered from the Middle Kingdom.

LeEco Le S3 X522

The smartphone is made in metal case, equipped with an excellent screen with protective glass. Even the most pedantic user can hardly find fault with the picture that the device gives out. Many experts say that only flagship devices can compete with this screen, so the device can be called the best inexpensive smartphone with a good screen.

For the rest of the parameters, this is a very decent smartphone. He's smart, got very good cameras and sound, however, they abandoned the usual headphone jack, replacing it with USB Type-C. When carrying out various promotions, the device can be bought for $ 120.

Meizu M5 Note

Cute all-metal smartphone completes our rating. Outwardly, it resembles a device of a much higher price category. The screen has become the pride of the device, it is juicy, bright and has extremely wide viewing angles. there is oleophobic coating. Let's praise the device for its high performance, good autonomy and functional shell. The camera is average, as in many Meizu, but otherwise everything is very good. If you get on the action, you can buy the device a little cheaper.

Considering the current trends in the world of mobile phones, where they are no longer just a means of communication, but something more, the presence of a large screen in a gadget has become simply an obligatory attribute of a successful model. Therefore, it is not surprising that many manufacturers pay special attention to this very characteristic. Which big screen phones are better than others, and what is their superiority? Let's try to figure it out together.

No. 10 - Alcatel 3C 5026D

Price: 6 590 rubles

Our top of the best big screen phones available in 2018-2019 opens with the Alcatel 3C 5026D. It has a display with a diagonal of 6 inches, a resolution of 1440x720, an IPS matrix, a pixel density of 268 ppi and a trendy aspect ratio of 18: 9. In terms of picture quality, the presented model is one of the best in the category of inexpensive gadgets - the matrix is calibrated quite well, the color rendition and contrast are also at a high level.

The MediaTek MT8321 chip is responsible for the performance of the Alcatel 3C 5026D, and the Mali-400 MP video accelerator helps it in graphic matters. It was foolish to expect a top-end filling in a smartphone for such a price, so the developer did not surprise us here. You should not count on the launch of modern games, but everything else is welcome. Memory configuration 1/16 GB. Battery capacity 3000 mAh. Photographic capabilities are presented by a rear camera with an 8 MP sensor and a 5 MP front camera.

Alcatel 3C 5026D

No. 9 - BQ-6001L Jumbo

Price: 7 700 rubles

BQ-6001L Jumbo is a Russian-made product. And, we must admit, quite successful. The domestic gadget is equipped with a 6-inch display with a resolution of 1440x720, a pixel density of 268 ppi and an aspect ratio of 18: 9. The screen is the main advantage of the gadget; it shows a high-quality and juicy picture, naturally, within reasonable limits.

Under the hood of the BQ-6001L Jumbo, our engineers installed a MediaTek MT6739 chip and a PowerVR GE8100 graphics accelerator. Such a config cannot be called modern, it is not capable of solving serious problems, but everyday processes and simple games will not become an insurmountable obstacle for it. RAM - 2 GB, and in the storage with a capacity of 16 GB, you can store pictures taken by the main camera with a 13 MP sensor or an 8 MP front camera. Autonomy is provided by a 3900 mAh battery, which, in combination with a modest processor, will provide good battery life without recharging, even at high brightness settings.

A number of smartphones announced in 2017 feature large displays with unusual widescreen aspect ratios. There is a direct link between this trend and cinematic standards, and besides, the use of such a display form factor has a positive effect on the ergonomics of devices. Let's try to assess the prospects for "tall" screens - will this fashion pass, or will all smartphones become so soon?

Since the silent era, films have been shot on 35mm film. The aspect ratio of the frame was chosen on the basis of the "portrait" aspect ratio (4: 3), which is widespread in photography, taking into account, at the same time, the perforation pitch and the diameter of four holes on each side. To obtain a wide-screen image on 35 mm film, they began to reduce the height of the frame using a shading mask (called porridge, from the French cacher - to obscure) or use anamorphic optics (with cylindrical rather than spherical lenses). In the latter case, the image during shooting is stretched vertically, so that for its normal projection, an inverse transformation is required.

Modern digital cinema standards, using 1.85: 1 and 2.39: 1 aspect ratios, trace their ancestry back to anamorphic and padded formats. At the same time, the most famous anamorphic format (2.35: 1), called CinemaScope, or Panavision (differ only in filming optics), owes its appearance to the 20th Century Fox film company. But the production of the film studios Universal and Columbia Pictures, designed for a smaller screen, is associated with the matted 1.85: 1 format.

At the dawn of television, they did not invent a bicycle, but at first they simply kept the aspect ratio of 4: 3, while, of course, they did not stay away from the subsequent wide-screen boom. So, for HD quality, the pictures settled on the aspect ratio of 16: 9. It should be noted that the closest to it was the cached format (note that 1.85: 1 = 16.65: 9).

In 1998, renowned cinematographer Vittorio Storaro proposed the Univisium format, which was another attempt to unify the standards of cinematography and television broadcasting. It uses the entire width of the film, which, in particular, allows you to capture a frame with an aspect ratio of 2: 1 (24x12 mm). It is from Univisium that the fashion trend of 2017 for smartphones, in which the aspect ratio of the screen is 18: 9 (or 2: 1), originates.

For the first time, this trend was embodied in a model (our review), where the height of the display is twice its width. The 5.7-inch diagonal does not turn the device into a clumsy phablet at this proportion. It retains the familiar "grip" width and one-handed typing capabilities of the 5.2-inch models. Since a little more than two dozen films have been filmed at Univisium, including, for example, such as Jurassic World and Star Trek: Discovery, and several popular TV series and TV shows (for example, House of Cards and Stranger Things from Netflix, as well as Transparent from Amazon ), then two more modes have been provided to ensure compatibility with conventional widescreen (16: 9) and "cinematic" layered (16.7: 9) formats. Note here that 16.7: 9 is 1.855.

Otherwise, when playing, for example, pictures with an aspect ratio of 16: 9, black bars appear on the sides of a "tall" screen (18: 9).

Generally speaking, most mobile apps and websites are optimized for the portrait mode of the smartphone, which means that a "tall" screen can theoretically count on more vertically displayed content. In addition, with an aspect ratio of 2: 1, the display is already "like garlic" divided between two simultaneously running applications.

But the main thing is that the format 18: 9 (2: 1) or 18.5: 9 (2.05: 1), like, for example, and (our review), improves the ergonomics of a smartphone with a large screen. At the same time, a phablet with a diagonal of the same size no longer looks like a bulky "shovel" in the hand. The fact is that the width of the display decreases with a simultaneous increase in its height, however, one cannot do without some losses in the usable area.

Here's what, for example, is obtained for a 5.8-inch screen with an aspect ratio of 18.5: 9 and its hypothetical variant in a 16: 9 format. If we fix the width of the display, then its area, due to the increase in height, will grow by about 15% (since the diagonal will grow).

Note that the "unusual" proportion in Samsung smartphones has not bypassed the "limitless" screen of the technological flagship (our review), and the more affordable models have a 6-inch display Galaxy A8 + (2018) and 5.6-inch (2018) with a resolution 2220x1080 points (our review).

Returning to LG products, it is worth mentioning the 6-inch OLED screen (2880x1440 pixels) with an aspect ratio of 18: 9, which the device received with a top-end filling. This device has even been called "the best smartphone LG has ever made". Its display with rounded corners takes up almost the entire area of the bezel, and the bezels around it are narrower than that of.

In turn, the updated version of the flagship smartphone has got a more spacious 6-inch matrix with an "elongated" aspect ratio (18: 9) and Quad HD + resolution (2880x1440 pixels), as well as narrower frames around the screen.

The "improved and enlarged" second edition (our review) turned out to be quite compact. The fact is that the aspect ratio of the sides of the display (18: 9) made it possible to fit the front panel into a rectangle measuring 151.8x75.5 mm, the area of which (with a 5.99-inch screen diagonal) turns out to be less than, for example, the average 5, 5-inch (16: 9 aspect ratio) smartphone.

By the way, the "flagship killer" also pulled out the screen. Its 6-inch Optic AMOLED matrix now achieves a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels (18: 9). Another brand leader of the Chinese market - Oppo - presented in Russia this fall three smartphones, executed in the same design:. All of them received 6-inch screens in the fashionable nowadays proportion of 18: 9 (resolution 2160x1080 pixels) with rather narrow frames. Under another trademark, also owned by BBK Electronics (in addition to Oppo and OnePlus), a duo of "selfie phones" with "high" screens and a resolution of 1440x720 pixels is offered - the 5.7-inch Vivo V7 and the 5.99-inch Vivo V7 +.

In turn, Asus pleased the inexpensive ZenFone Max Plus (M1) model with two rear cameras and a capacious battery, while its 5.7-inch screen with a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels (18: 9) occupies about 80% of the front panel area of the compact housing.

The epidemic of "high" screens has also affected the "parallel world" of i-devices. So, the 5.8-inch (our review) has absolutely new not only an HDR display with an OLED matrix (Super Retina), but also its aspect ratio of 19.5: 9 (2436x1125 pixels).

Forecasts

The release of smartphones equipped with "tall" screens in 2018 will undoubtedly continue. Moreover, IHS Markit experts, for example, expect a significant increase in sales (at least until 2021) of just such devices. It is possible that displays (16: 9) with diagonals of 5 and 5.2 inches will be replaced by almost the same width "tall" screens (18: 9), but with diagonals 5.4 and 5.7 inches, respectively. It is worth noting that the fashion trend for a new aspect ratio has already been picked up by budget smartphones. In turn, chip makers have made sure that support for "tall" displays is integrated right into the chipsets. Examples include Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 and Snapdragon 636, as well as MediaTek MT6739. Not only LG Display, Samsung Display and Japan Display Inc. (JDI), but also a number of Taiwanese and Chinese LCD display manufacturers including AU Optronics, BOE, EBBG, Tianma Microelectronics, etc.

Next year, new experiments with the aspect ratio of screens in models from leading market players are not excluded. Recall that another cinematic format (21: 9 = 2.33: 1), which is close to anamorphic (2.35: 1), was predicted in 2017 for the failed Sony Xperia X Ultra smartphone. By the way, the LG BL40 Chocolate, released back in 2009, became a pioneer among mobile phones with a screen in this ratio (21: 9).
