How do you feel about Samsung smartphones? I am critical. As long as I remember their phones, I scold them so much. Like, the design is not about anything, then the shell is darkness, the screens eat away the eyes ... In a word, I don’t like Samsung, but it was the Galaxy s7 edge that made me look differently at the smartphones of the Korean company.
Once again, I'm not thrilled with Samsung, but I can't deny that they are innovating. It was their technologies, nested edge, that made me reconsider my attitude and even command respect. What I will tell you in this review. Well, let's start!
The appearance and materials of the smartphone
Colors and design
In 2016, the Koreans decided to make a small restyling of the 2015 models. Samsung Galaxy s7 edge looks almost no different from its predecessor - Galaxy s6 edge +. Apparently, the guys from Samsung have switched to a two-year design (as in Apple), and will change it only in 2017, as opposed to Yabloko (we will see the new iPhone 7 design this fall).
The new smartphone is still based on a metal frame, the shockproof Gorilla Glass 4 is located on the back, and on the front, unlike the previous model, there is 2.5D glass, which the company stubbornly calls 3D because of the screen bends on the case, which, in principle, logical: none of the manufacturers offer you such viewing angles.
Samsung Galaxy s7 edge is available in four colors: dark (Black Onyx), gold, silver and white. Judging by the pre-orders, most people choose a dark color. The case of the Galaxy s7 is not collapsible, and you cannot change the battery yourself. I am sure that for most of you it is easier to take your smartphone to the service and be sure that it will work than to play the lottery and change something yourself.

I also want to please you with the news: the new Samsung Galaxy s7 edge uses the IP68 protection standard, which means that you can safely take your phone in the shower or go to the pool with it. Flush and do not drown, but edge will withstand everything. This is really cool and should become a standard for manufacturers for a long time. What is also noteworthy: the board is also impregnated with a water-repellent solution (similar to the one used by Motorola), Samsung for such a solution!
But in addition to such pleasant things, the Samsung Galaxy s7 edge also has little things that are invisible at first glance, but very useful. For example: to make not just a USB connector that will not let water through, but such that even if water gets there under the influence of impact, it will be de-energized and prevent a short circuit. Or cover the metal parts with anti-corrosion treatment ... Little things, but well thought out!
I also want to note that under water the sensor of your Galaxy will work. I have no idea how Samsung implemented this, but the fact remains that the smartphone can be used underwater, all programs run correctly and work as usual. There is only one downside to using the device underwater: the speakers take time to dry out. Otherwise, the sound will be very quiet and "float" in volume.
shock resistance
Compared to last year's model, the body of the Samsung Galaxy s 7 edge has not only grown in size due to the increased battery, but also become stronger. When creating the phone, reinforced frames were used (aluminum alloy No. 6013), the design of the smartphone was completely revised, anyhow the blows harmed the insides and glasses of the new Galaxy s 7 edge less ... So you can say having studied the gadget in all its technical characteristics, but what is it in business?
While writing the article, I looked at several Crash tests of this device. In one of them, a kilogram hammer is thrown at a smartphone, and then they hit it on the display. When the hammer falls from a small height, the edge patient feels great. There aren't even any impact marks. But after 9 powerful and juicy hits on the display, the fun begins. In the first five strokes, you begin to see the matrix, but the sensor continues to work. After three more hits, your Samsung Galaxy s7 edge continues to work, but the sensor is no longer active, but even at 11 hits, the smartphone still shows! He did not turn off, flickers, but gives a picture. I was amazed how the phone is able to withstand this. He's really hard to kill.
But hardly anyone will arrange such hardcore for their smartphone. In a more realistic test, one might say everyday, the smartphone was dropped from the level of the belt, head (approximately 182 cm) and a height of 3 meters. The phone was compared with the iPhone 6s Plus. After reviewing more than one Crash Test of these flagships, I noticed this feature: 6s Plus bounces more on the ground, and s7 edge has almost no bounce. This can be explained by the design: most of the iPhone is made of aluminum, while Samsung only has aluminum edges, and all other surfaces are glass. But this is the key when falling: Samsung does not depreciate itself.
From the height of the belt - both phones behave well. Smartphones get minor scratches, which as such are not a problem. Even falling screen down, both gadgets can withstand "Hurrah!". But from the height of the head, the situation is already changing somewhat: when falling on the side face (which, by the way, only gets a small dent), the Galaxy s7 edge is covered with a web of cracks on the back cover, while the 6s Plus has only a small dent and a couple of scratches on the case. In the final part of the test, the flagships are thrown from the ceiling level of the apartment, and here the Galaxy s7 has no chance when it falls. The screen is beating. While the iPhone, with its bounce, dampens this blow and the screen receives only a couple of new scratches.
But even after the falls, the phones continued to work correctly and respond. The conclusion will be this: Galaxy s7 edge is very good in terms of shock resistance, but loses to the iPhone in shock resistance.
Ergonomics
The smartphone lies comfortably in the hand : nothing crashes, everything is in its place and despite the big screen - everything is within reach. The smartphone is not bulky: the feeling of size is very similar to the Galaxy s7, but the screen is 5.5. My hands did not notice any flaws with the location of buttons or other elements.

Inside the brand new flagship, Android 6.0.1 is installed with the TouchWiz shell, which has been greatly redesigned for Android style and, in general, it turned out not bad. Looks organic and works fast. The main idea of the new TouchWiz 2016 was to put all the icons on one screen. And they succeeded. To be honest, it's nice that the phone has almost no pre-installed software: all elements can be removed. Actually, there will be a minimum of excess.
Many reviewers will draw your attention to the fact that the smartphone does not even have a player from Samsung in stock. Like, there is only Play Music. I believe this is true. For example, I have Apple Music android installed, and I personally do not need a simple player. Just a redundant program. And how many of us use the VK player? In a word, Koreans are great. Well, for those who still need a player from Samsung, you can always download it in the official application store from the manufacturer.
CPU
The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge uses two chipsets: the first is the octa-core Exynos Octa 8890 (which will be on most models) and the Snapdragon 820. Of course, the 820 will be more powerful in synthetic tests, but can you feel the difference? I do not think. It is only on paper (and even then not significant). But if it matters to you, then you can order a version with Snapdragon 820 at the official representative office, but keep in mind the fact that Exynos will work longer.
Display
The display of the Samsung Galaxy s7 edge is made using Super AMOLED technology, which many criticize for the poisonous colors. It's true, they are very saturated, but not too much. I can’t say that I am generally delighted with the color of phones of this brand. It seems very unnatural to me, even with the most relaxed screen setting, but this, so to speak, is a matter of taste. I am convinced that the color of the iPhone is better: it is both more natural, and the eyes are not so tired of the screen. Although the color is not to my taste, I really liked that the smartphone does not go blind in the sun, for which the developers are honored and praised.
I don’t see the point in discussing the expansion and pixel density. In this matter, all today's flagships show excellent results, but it's worth mentioning the usability of a screen with working edges. I am delighted with this idea. With it, a 5.5-inch diagonal is used as conveniently and productively as possible, plus the smartphone does not get oversized and therefore fits perfectly in the hand. If, again, we return to the comparison with the iPhone, then the 6s Plus lies much worse in the hand and is easier to drop. What can I say, because of these huge frames around the edges of the iPhone screen, even the Chinese Meizu M2 note or Pro 5 lies more confidently in the hand.
The side faces of the s7 edge provide it with the maximum use of the “dead zones” of the screen, on which, by the way, a convenient menu is installed. I appreciated the idea, my phone also has a 5.5-inch display, but working with the Samsung screen was much more efficient and enjoyable.
My impression after using the new edge display is the most positive, but here's the aspect: it will be easier to scratch or break such glass than the same s7, and even though the company swears that it is over-strengthened, and the like - I don't believe in it. In crash tests, iPhone glass holds up much better. And then there is the price issue. The glass on the s6 edge + cost space money and I dare to assume that the price will not fall with the new model.
So there are two conclusions: 1 - do not drop and treat the phone as carefully as possible, 2 - when buying it, be ready to give a third of the amount to replace the screen, in case of a fall.
There is never enough super fast memory
Last year, the Korean company made the decision to ditch microSD, but this caused huge outrage among fans and smartphone owners, and this year Samsung has returned this technology to its flagships. At the time of writing, the phone supports flash drives up to 200 GB, but the company promises to support cards up to 2 TB in the near future. I also remind you that the new flagship uses high-speed UFS 2.0 memory, which provides the fastest file system write speed. As for the built-in memory, smartphones will be available in two versions: 32 and 64 GB.
RAM is also great. Bandwidth - 3.2 Gb / s. We can say that this is the record speed of writing mobile devices at the moment. The amount of RAM is 4 GB.
Battery
They promised more and delivered. The phone now lives longer. How did the company succeed? Several factors contributed to this:
- Increased battery capacity (3600 mAh) and reduced screen power consumption
- Modified software
Optimization matters a lot. And no one dares to deny it. In the new software, the company tried to optimize the work as much as possible so that the phone would last 1.5-2 times longer. And they succeeded! The smartphone, even when fully loaded (games, music, auto brightness, MI Fit and the Internet), holds a charge for up to two days in this mode.
This software will also come to last year's flagships, so many will be able to evaluate the quality of the new Touch Wiz. But the feedback from Galaxy s6 owners about the new firmware is not flattering. The phone holds a charge better, but performance drops by about 20%. So the choice: to update or not to update the smartphone to the marshmallow is up to you, the owners of the Galaxy s of yesteryear.
Camera
In the updated phone, the camera began to shoot better. And do not pay attention that there are only 12 megapixels (and not 16 like last year), the Samsung Galaxy s7 edge has a completely different matrix, which gives an excellent frame. Also, the camera protrudes much less from the body than in the previous model.
But if we compare this camera with other premium segment modules, then I cannot say that it is the best. The camera shoots at the level, no doubt. But she is not a "star" among competitors. A rival, yes, but not a winner. However, there are no winners in this game today, this is again a matter of your taste.
Communication options
In this part of the review, I will tell you about the things that struck me in the new s7 edge. I will not tell you for a long time about the fact that Bluetooth 4.2 began to work faster and at a greater distance, as well as about other similar things. And I'll tell you about the daily bread of a poor student: a Wi-Fi repeater.
Usually, when you create an access point, the smartphone instantly turns off Wi-Fi and this is not always convenient. But in the Samsung Galaxy s7 edge, this does not happen. Moreover, all other devices begin to use the connection of the recipient, the actual distributor. This is a great technology and many will appreciate it. After all, we are all familiar with these restrictions in hotel rooms per device connected to the network, this often causes great discomfort, but this feature really solves this problem. But is it better than the iPhone 6s Plus? Looking at what. In terms of comfort in the hand - no doubt. In terms of impact resistance, no. In terms of performance - plus or minus the same as the camera, build quality and stability. Otherwise, it is a choice purely of your taste and needs.

In general, having collected for myself all the pros and cons of both well-known phones, I settled on the Samsung Galaxy S7.
The start of the sale of this phone was in March 2017 (Russia) and was priced at 49,990 rubles, I bought the phone in September 2017 and its price has already dropped to 35,000, and now you can generally buy it for 30,000 rubles.

Minus this model that there are 2 touch buttons on the screen and when watching a movie on the phone, for example, I constantly press them on purpose and it throws me out of watching something. What I did not have with an iPhone where there is one "Home" button.
Now a little about the screen - The screen is very bright, the iPhone does not have such a riot of colors, here the manufacturer Samsung did their best. The advantage is that the screen itself adjusts to the lighting and understands when you need a brighter screen, and when you can weaken the supply of brightness. At night, for example, it turns off the time light indication.
There are sensors that blink when you receive something in the mail. This is a plus for me. In the iPhone, you had to first press the button to see if something came or not, there is also an indicator here.
Samsung Galaxy S7 It has an incredibly fast processor, which I did not expect from Android. All applications open very quickly without "braking" and "hanging". In principle, the iPhone works a little better - in my opinion.
The phone holds the battery with confidence for a day, which my previous iPhone could not boast of ... although I use them the same way - this is watching movies, taking photos and videos, viewing social networks. networks.
So who is afraid to take the phone because it is made of tempered glass, I want to advise you not to be afraid and take it if you like it, it is very comfortable and looks very stylish.
