Review of the Just5 phone. Cheerful dialer and smartphone companion

What were smartphones like five years ago, what was the iPhone? Can you compare with modern flagships? Of course not. These devices have come a long way of development and have now turned into almost a full-fledged computer in your pocket. There are only two problems. People who love to stand out from the crowd with an iPhone won't stand out anymore. With the help of the Korean "soap" Galaxy S, by the way, too. But this is a problem of perception of the world. For sane citizens, the main thing is that the apparatus fulfills the assigned tasks, and it does it, only for a short time. Unfortunately, over the same five years, there have been no cardinal changes in the field of batteries. On average, with the active use of the mobile Internet, a modern smartphone, including the iPhone, hardly survives until the evening, and often does not. But what a bummer when you urgently need to call, but the battery of your favorite gadget has already been planted to zero, but it was not with you. In such situations, good old mobile phones are saved without frills. A kind of "dialers" with a small display and hardware alphanumeric keyboard, working for days without an outlet. Just5 CP10S will easily play such a role, and even attract the attention of others, if this is important to you. Moreover, this product is so versatile that it will perfectly suit both an elderly person and a fashionable hipster, and any child will be delighted. Let's talk about this.

The real iPhone in the "babushkophone" market

In 2009, Just5 reinvented the mobile phone - so now it is fashionable to speak at the suggestion of a well-known American manufacturer. More precisely, she offered a device that is convenient for the elderly, and got into the top ten. A simple phone with large keys, a convenient menu and large print captivated the audience right away and won a prestigious award Red Dot Design Award and laid the foundation for a new branch of development of this kind of devices. Since then, many similar solutions have appeared, all sorts of alternatives, and Just5 has not stood still.

Moreover, the company was able to even improve the basic idea and at the same time preserve the fundamental principles of these gadgets, as evidenced by the new model. Just5 CP10S... Yes, there are models that are more functional, there are cheaper ones, but the original still sets the bar for quality ... some kind of marketing hell has begun. But the phone really impressed me. This is a kind of iPhone among simple "dialers" and it is packed in a premium way:

The box is made of high-quality and thick cardboard with a magnetic flap, packed in a silvery dust jacket. It looks impressive, feels great. Inside is a thick manual in several languages, and below it is the phone itself:

By the way, such a large package surprised and even caused nostalgia for the old days, when phones were packed in suitcase-sized boxes. The smart phone hid under the phone orange charger and micro-USB cable, as well as simple headphones. It's a shame they aren't orange either.

There was also a 1000 mAh battery, which is quite good for such a phone:

I got a turquoise sample with orange accents, although there are many other color options in the assortment:

The design of the gadget is cool, and the keyboard with huge buttons is a song. A clear click, you can easily hit the keys and, in general, I missed the hardware alphanumeric keyboards, especially those so convenient. You click on the buttons and you don't want to let go of the phone.

But there are tons of other features besides the keyboard. The rounded shape of the phone resembles a pebble, and the rounded display glass only enhances the effect. Matte plastic with a slight Soft Touch effect is pleasant to the touch, does not slip in the hands and does not get very dirty.

All controls and technical holes are located on the edges of the device, including a 3.5 mm audio jack on the top, FM (radio start) and volume controls on the left, a lever for turning on the flashlight and, attention! keyboard lock lever - on the right side. Yes, yes, the keyboard is not blocked by a key combination, as in other phones, but by a simple slider. This is primarily done for the convenience of older people, who find it easier to move the lever than to quickly click on a couple of buttons. On the bottom there is a micro-USB port and a pair of contacts for the dock and accessories.

Apart from a couple of levers, everything is more or less standard, but do not rush. There is also an emergency button on the back. It can be configured for different actions. For example, you can enter an emergency number, to which a call will be made by clicking, or add an SOS message and in case of problems with one click, you can send it to a specific number. Also convenient for the elderly and children. Suddenly, the grandmother will take a heart - just make one click to warn relatives.

The back cover is removed with a slight movement (put your palm and pull down) - click - and you can insert the SIM card. Note that the SIM holder is not the most convenient. In this case, it is problematic to use cut cards through an adapter. In principle, I do not recommend even trying to do this. The adapter may get stuck and then you cannot do without an operation in the service center.

But it's better to show it once than to describe it in words many times. I propose to take a look at the video review of the device, and at the same time to superficially evaluate its menu:

Operating experience. Click, click, click!

I have already lost the habit of simple mobile phones that do not work without a SIM card. Together with Just5 CP10S I had to get used to it again and to look for a full-size card. A couple of movements, removed and inserted the battery, closed the phone, that's it - you can work. The first launch and the first questions from the gadget: the choice of language, date and time - a standard set.

After that, you can start working with the device. According to the first one, the unusual designations of the cellular network signal (a square spiral), the battery charge (a square divided into four parts) and an angular font are somewhat confusing, but you get used to it over time. Plus it is well legible, the icons and letters are large, easily distinguishable in any conditions.

Dealing with the menu will not be difficult and you can do it by "typing" or look into the instructions, everything is described there literally on one page. The scheme is simple: the buttons on the left (OK) and on the right (X) under the screen are responsible for confirming or rejecting when working with the menu, or for activating the current function depicted as a pictogram: on the left - a missed call, on the right - a message. Clicking on the upper part of the central paired button on the main screen is a menu call. In other cases, she is responsible for navigating through the points.

The menu is as compact and simple as possible and consists of only a few items: settings, messages, calls, organizer and contacts. We know all of them from any other "dialers" and the hero of the review is not particularly different in this regard.

Although some points are worth paying attention to. For example, there is support for airplane mode:

Setting the time to turn the phone on and off:

And also good applications in the organizer section. There is even one game by which you can understand that the display is actually color, and not monochrome:

The phone ring is very loud and sharp. There is no bass at all, but it is simply impossible not to hear it. There are several ringtones to choose from, which are more than enough for this kind of gadget. The internal speaker is also quite good, I can hear the interlocutor well, and me on the other end of the line too.

The flashlight is not particularly powerful, but it will be enough to illuminate your path in the dark or the keyhole. But the white backlighting of the keys is bright and cheerful - even with poor eyesight, the inscriptions on the buttons will not merge into one bright spot and will be clearly distinguishable.

The phone is as simple as a log, but cool. It is pleasant to hold and comfortable to use. There are no additional functions, such as an MP3 player, but they are not needed. The pensioner will only call, and with convenience, without squinting, trying to read small letters, and not aiming at each button with his fingernail. If this is a backup phone (hipsters should like it), then it doesn't need any special functions, because besides there is an iPhone, iPad or some other “smart” gadget.

Estimates - 4, average score: 3.8 ()

The device has a nice, one might say, silver-colored square-shaped gift box. In order to open the box, you need to remove the upper part, then lift the lid, which is held by magnets. Above is a large instruction in seven languages, including Russian. Under it is a telephone. At the very bottom, a bright orange AC adapter and a USB cable are neatly laid (it will definitely stand out among others - don't mix it up), next to it is a black headset.

Positioning

The international brand of the manufacturer of mobile phones Just5 ("just five") has presented another update to the CP10s 2013. Relative to the previous device, there have been changes: dimensions - "Just" became a little larger for a comfortable grip with one hand, a modern microUSB connector was built in for convenient battery charging from almost any network adapter, the shape of the side buttons was slightly changed, instead of a monochrome screen, a color screen was installed, and also significantly redesigned the gadget menu interface - new fonts and icons. There was one simple game called "F1 Race".

Despite the peculiar appearance, more reminiscent of grandmother's phones, in fact, the phones are designed for a wide audience: for example, they will appeal to fashionistas and fashionistas, users who are tired of dull gray handsets of the same type, children who are just mastering a mobile phone, people with impaired vision, elderly. In the end, the gadget can be purchased by those who are looking for a second phone to share with a smartphone: one for long calls, the other for multimedia.

Design, dimensions, controls

According to an official source, the design of the Just5 CP10s phone was developed by the designer Gleb Gough (BestInSpace studio (http://bestinspace.com/)). Frankly speaking, I hear about him for the first time, but "Internet users" claim that he is now a fashion designer. If interested, here is a little information from the site sovcom.ru:

“Gleb Goughl is a contemporary artist and painter. Has been painting since 2002. In his area of \u200b\u200binterest is canvas, oil, acrylic, photo, digital. He has been fond of art since 2003. Branding, naming, copyright, prom. design since 2005. He has more than 20 federal brands on his account. Its products have received various domestic and foreign awards (EFFIE - 4 times; iF - 2 times and REDDOT). The artist's canvases are popular with collectors. Gough's exhibitions are often held in modern galleries in Moscow. Many of his works are kept in private collections in Russia and abroad.

In addition, Gleb is the author of more than a dozen federal and international brands such as Just5 (famous color phones), Senator, Richmond, etc. He is also an art director for four companies at once and heads the iconic sound bureau BESTINSPACE. "

In fact, there are many telephones like Just5 on the market, but not everyone manages to diversify the lineup with a variety of color options: for the most part they are dark, and you will hardly find purple, blue, or with rows of keys of different colors. The latter looks really original, and you can't say that this is a typical grandmother's phone.

The rather thick edging is made of dark glossy plastic that looks like metal. The material is durable, the top layer of varnish (or paint) has not been rubbed during operation. The back panel and buttons will be the color you buy. The back is made of plastic and covered with a soft-touch material: a mixture of matte plastic and pure soft-touch. The buttons are matte and slightly rough, i.e. do not slip at all - a significant plus for such a device.

Dimensions CP10s - 112x52x17 mm, weight is only 90 grams. Due to the sloping edges, a slightly rounded back panel, light weight and pleasant materials, the phone lies in the hand cool, I would add - perfect. The previous model (CP10 2011) has dimensions - 107x50x17 mm, and the weight is 8 grams more.

The novelty easily fits in the pockets of jeans, trousers, a jacket, but it will not be very convenient to wear in a pocket of a summer shirt due to its relatively large thickness.

There is a speech speaker on the front panel. Its volume is average or slightly above average, its timbre is slightly muffled, although the interlocutor can be heard quite clearly, but the sound seems to come from afar. Dust- and waterproof mobile phones behave similarly. There is no echo, the sound is clear.

Under the screen there is a large keyboard, consisting of 15 buttons, which are practically not separated from each other. The first three are larger than the others - 16x16 mm versus 15x12 mm. Slightly rounded at the edges. Pressing the buttons is firm, the travel is minimal, but in general it is convenient to use.

The symbols are engraved and painted with a translucent white paint inside, so they will not fade over time, as well as the inscriptions. The numbers are five times more letters. Cyrillic (under the numbers) and Latin (to the right of the numbers) are the same size. There is a backlighting, it is white, dim, but in insufficient lighting conditions the buttons are clearly visible, and in the daytime or in the sun the light keys are noticeable even without backlighting.

Displaying additional characters is started with the "*" button, and "#" switches capital letters, T9, language.

On the upper end, in the groove, there is a standard 3.5 mm jack, a flashlight and a loop for a lanyard.

On the right in the center there is an orange "shutter" button; by shifting upwards, the keyboard is locked. Above - the same type of black button to activate the flashlight. Effectively shines about 1.5 meters. By the way, it works off.

On the left is the FM radio start button (long hold), a little higher - the volume rocker key. Quite convex, comfortable to use.

At the bottom there is a microUSB for charging the battery, a microphone and two contact plates for installation in a docking station. Subsequently, the company decided to abandon it.

On the back is a large orange button called "Superbutton". It has a square shape and is slightly recessed into the body; it performs a number of functions:

  • SOS (send an emergency message, SOS signal, call)
  • Airplane Mode (Disable Data Transfer)
  • Jet lag (time setting when changing the time zone)
  • Just trip (activation of the navigation application that allows you to build a route using symbols)
  • Counter (when you press the "Ok" button, the number on the number of clicks is displayed on the screen)

Next to the super button is the speaker hole. It is loud (the site says 20 dB), but wheezes at the maximum level when some melodies are set.

The cover is removed by pulling it down. Under the battery, at the bottom right, there is a metal slide for a regular SIM card.

Display

The Just5 CP10s phone has a display with a diagonal of 1.77 inches (the physical size is 42x32 mm), the resolution is 128x160 pixels. The matrix is \u200b\u200bmade using TFT-LCD technology and displays 65 thousand color shades. I clarified why a non-monochrome screen is used here, because the interface is still black and white, I was told that such displays are no longer produced, and in order to fit into the overall design concept, I had to keep the design style.

The brightness is not adjustable, but in the sun the image is practically not distorted due to the contrasting picture.

Speaking about the design, I don't really like the font: despite the rather large size, its readability is not the best, the letters are located too close to each other. The icons in the main menu could be slightly larger. For the rest, there are no complaints.

Battery

The battery charge indicator is located on the top right in the form of four triangles.

The Just5 CP10s uses a 1000mAh, 3.7V Li-Ion battery, model CP10. The manufacturer claims that the phone will work up to 250 hours in standby mode, and up to 8 hours in talk mode. My battery sat down after about 6 days, given that I talked on my mobile for 15-20 minutes a day, sent a dozen SMS and listened to the radio for about an hour.

Communication capabilities

The phone works only in 2G networks (900/1800 MHz). SAR level:

  • GSM900: 0.372W / kg 10g head SAR
  • DCS1800: 0.132W / kg 10g head SAR

The indicator is located at the top left and represents 3 squares in the form of a cobweb, that is, each next square is in another. If there is no network, the indicator glows red.
