Quadcopter phantom 4 specifications. Quadcopters DJI Phantom

Rumor has it that Apple engineers had a hand in the development of the new DJI Phantom 4. True or not, we do not know, but the fact that the new Phantom is officially sold in the Apple Store already says a lot. With Apple products, the new model really has a lot in common. Starting from thoughtful design and ending with the high manufacturability of the product.

Design

The attention to detail in the new Phantom 4 is felt everywhere. Take at least the box, opening which reveals a case made of gray polystyrene foam with an original rubberized handle, which fits everything you need for flying - the drone itself, the remote control, the charger and all kinds of accessories. There is a section for everything - everything is very convenient. This case can be easily put in a backpack or in the trunk of a car.

Externally, the new Phantom has undergone changes, it has become sleeker, slimmer, smoother lines. The body has become more "chubby". The motors are open, which should prevent overheating and, as a result, an increase in power. The fastening of the propellers to the motors has changed - now the propellers do not need to be tightened, a mount is provided on the electric motors, which allows you to put on and remove the propellers in one motion.

Heavy duty magnesium alloy bottom, chassis, camera and gimbal for maximum camera protection

Below the camera are sonar and visual positioning sensors. In front of the drone, on each leg, at the very base, there are sensors for visual control of obstacles.

Equipment

The kit of the quadcopter is standard, with the exception of one drawback - there is no Lightning cable. Those who plan to use the iPad will have to buy it in addition.

The kit includes:

  • Copter
  • Remote control with phone/tablet holder
  • 2 sets of propellers
  • Battery
  • Charger
  • Charging cable
  • Instruction
  • USB OTG cable (cable for connecting the device without a computer)
  • Micro USD cable
  • Micro SD card 16 GB

Remote controller

The Phantom 4 remote has not changed much compared to the third version. Control sticks whose functionality can be customized. There are two wheels on the sides of the remote control, one is responsible for the exposure, the other for turning the camera. The start / stop recording button is also in its place. But the drone operation mode switch is an innovation. There are three modes in total - P, S and A.

  1. P - positioning, the quietest mode in which all sensors and sensors work (great for beginners).
  2. A - hardcore mode, sensors and sensors are disabled, the device does not hang in the air and does not fly around obstacles (recommended for experienced pilots).
  3. S - sport mode. In this mode, the phantom 4 quadcopter develops maximum speed. GPS and visual positioning work, front sensors and stabilization system are disabled.

DJI Lightbridge 2 technology for transferring Full HD video from the on-board camera to a mobile device is a key feature and pride of DJI. Visual control of the camera is carried out through the DJI GO app. There are several innovations in the application of the system - these are new flight modes, displaying the areas of approach of the drone to the object (from the green zone to the red one), the sensor settings menu, etc.

I would like to dwell on the Active Track system. Its essence is in tracking the object. It is enough to poke on the object that you want to track on your mobile device, the system will remember it and follow it. Moreover, the phantom is able to track you in a crowd of people, and even if you “get lost” for a short time, for example, by going under the visor, the system will not lose you.

The larger the object, the easier it is for the device to track it.

Specifications DJI Phantom 4

Flight performance is superior to the third version. The altitude limit is kept at 6 km above sea level, but speeds have increased. In sports mode, the Phantom gains 6 m/s (the third version is 5 m/s) and descends at a speed of 4 m/s (against 3 m/s for its predecessor). The maximum flight speed has been increased to 20 m/s (72 km/h) against 57.6 km/h. Due to the fact that the battery is increased to 5350 mAh (from 4480mA on the 3rd phantom), the copter hangs in the air for 5 minutes more than its predecessor (28 minutes versus 23). New flight characteristics are quite enough for shooting sports events.

Camera

The copter borrowed the camera from its predecessor. 4K 12.4MP camera with 20mm lens and 1/2.3” sensor. However, there are also changes. First of all, the color rendition - it has become better, the colors are more juicy and bright. Significantly added and white balance. The new camera has a Slo-mo mode with a resolution of 720p and a frame rate of 120 fps. The new mode will certainly appeal to fans of shooting dynamic scenes.

Main conclusions

The device has gotten better. The new Phantom 4 is faster, smarter and better to drive. New modes such as Active Track, nice changes in photo and video quality, new Slo-mo mode - everything is interesting and relevant. Should the happy owners of the 3rd phantom run to the store for the 4th? Why not, if funds allow.

The question of how high a quadrocopter can fly was asked by everyone who has ever seen such a device at least once in their life. We will answer right away that such a device will not reach the Earth's orbit, and for these purposes there are completely different devices. And quadcopters designed for entertainment and professional photography from the air have clear parameters, which we will pay attention to.

What determines the maximum height of the quadcopter

In order to raise the quadrocopter as high as possible in the air, one desire is not enough. From a control point of view, patience is also required, with which you will have to press the joystick for a long time in one single direction until it reaches its peak position in the air. The upper limit of this peak position will correspond to the value of the maximum height of the quadcopter.

For each model of flying drones, this characteristic is individual and depends on a whole set of factors. The main ones are engine power, battery capacity, equipment signal range and software settings.

If the latter can be changed by the user at his own discretion in a number of cases, such as, for example, a quadrocopter completely assembled by himself, then other parameters are usually not regulated and completely depend on the hardware components of the model. The capacity of the batteries cannot be adjusted upwards, however, they can be replaced with more capacious ones, provided that other components allow it, since a mismatch between the input and output voltages can lead to the quadcopter having to be thrown out due to a breakdown.

If the range of the equipment can be increased by using repeaters and signal repeaters purchased additionally as an accessory, then the power of the motors cannot be increased without harm to the quadcopter. Replacing the motors may result in a denial of service for the device, if such is intended by the manufacturer.

Maximum height of drones of different models

If we consider the categories of quadrocopters as a whole, then indoor models will have the lowest flight altitude. The reason for this is not the height of the ceilings, but the same range of the equipment signal. In miniature nano and micro models, a Bluetooth channel is often used as a control signal, the range of which usually does not exceed 50 meters. Most often, in the specifications, the manufacturer indicates an effective range of 20-30 meters, when small obstacles do not become an obstacle between the quality of control and the pleasure of operation.

For such models, this is quite enough, since such small devices are rarely used in large areas. Medium-sized models in the budget price range usually have a larger range of equipment, which also increases the flight altitude. In this case, radio frequencies are used for control, the strength of which directly depends on the power of the receiver and transmitter.

In budget models, they very rarely have sufficient strength, and therefore the maximum flight altitude in such cases is limited to an altitude in the range from 100 to 500 meters. The second reason for this is low-power collector engines, which do not allow you to fly high above the ground. So that they do not burn out during the flight, controllers are installed on them, which limit the speed of the engines, and accordingly prevent the burnout of these electronic parts.

With the increase in the quality of components, unfortunately, their cost also increases. Therefore, it is no accident that models of a higher price category rise much higher in the air. Base-level models rise to a height of 1.5-2 km. This is provided by both more powerful signal transmitters and more reliable brushless motors. They are much more effective in overcoming the force of gravity and lift the quadcopter higher and higher. However, this is not the limit.

The most advanced models can fly much higher in the air. Some of them, which can fly longer in the air due to their larger batteries, can fly higher for this very reason. They are also assisted by specially designed motors and high-flux data links that ultimately provide a flight altitude of 10,000 meters above sea level. In order not to be unfounded, we give examples of models and their highest flight altitude:

  • Flairics Journalist - 2000 meters
  • Homeland Surveillance RDASS Q1000 - 3657 meters
  • JYU Spider X - 4000 meters
  • DJI Phantom 4 - 6000 meters
  • AEE F100 Drone - 10000 meters

parting word

If you decide to raise the quadcopter to its maximum peak altitude, please note that this requires maximum battery power. Many models, especially inexpensive ones, do not have a self-saving function. With a critical battery charge, they can simply collapse to the ground, no matter what the height is under the quadcopter. Therefore, the higher it is in its peak position, the more damage its structure can receive after a fall.

Only 2 things save from such cases - this is an incredible reaction and dexterity of the operator, or a reserve rescue parachute that works in case of a quadrocopter crash. You should take care of its availability in advance and purchase it for an additional fee if it is included in the kit of accessories that can be combined with your drone model.

Video with high-altitude flights of quadrocopters

DJI is one of the leading manufacturers of quadcopters in the world. Among all its developments, a special place is occupied by Phantom quadrocopters - a series that is popular both among novice pilots and among connoisseurs and experienced aerial photography pilots. 4vision invites you to get acquainted with the Phantom 3 and 4 and make your choice.

The Phantom 3 series consists of models: Standard, Advanced and Professional. All Phantom 3 members can stay in the air for about 25 minutes, fly up to 500 meters in height from the takeoff point, support satellite navigation, fly at speeds up to 16 m / s, the video from the copter is broadcast to your mobile device in high quality using built-in Lightbridge technology (for Pro and Advanced) or Wi-Fi (for Standard). There are almost no differences between Advanced and Professional, they consist only in the maximum available video quality, charger power and the color of the stickers on the case: Advanced shoots video in maximum quality 2.7K, has a 57W charger and silver stickers, and Professional shoots video in maximum 4K quality, has a 100W charger and golden stickers. Standard was designed to bring Pro/Advanced features to a wider range of users at a reduced cost. It differs in: the camera - unlike its counterparts that have a Sony camera in their arsenal, the Standard uses a cheaper Panasonic (2.7K); simplified positioning system - Standard uses GPS, and more advanced models are guided by GPS + GLONASS, in addition, it does not have a visual positioning system. You can find a more detailed comparison of these models, as well as Phantom 4, on our website.

The latest product in the series is the Phantom 4, which has taken a major step forward in its development and has a number of significant advantages over the Phantom 3. First of all, the implementation of the obstacle avoidance system is a revolutionary development that takes flight safety to a new level, because the Phantom automatically recognizes and avoids obstacles, even if the pilot persistently directs the copter towards them. This feature works in all flight modes except sport - this is also new to the 4th Phantom, in this mode the aircraft's maneuverability and speed are greatly increased, allowing you to experience the aircraft's flight capabilities to the maximum. Improved gimbal and camera lens, which DJI is constantly working on, create even better footage, and with an extended battery capacity, the copter can now fly up to 28 minutes! The flight modes have also been expanded: ActiveTrack - automatic flight after the object and its shooting, to activate which it is enough to select the object visually on the smartphone screen; TapFly - it is also enough to indicate the flight direction on the display with one touch of your finger, and the copter will obey you. It is worth mentioning the advanced visual positioning system - the copter has a height of 10 meters, unlike 3 meters of previous models. This is only a part of the innovations, the rest you can find in detail in the description of the Phantom 4.

Set your priorities, set your goals, then take a close look at the specifications of each model - on our site you will find everything you need to know about each of them, as well as reviews and comparisons that will certainly be useful to you.

In addition, we maintain our own Youtube channel, where you can watch our video reviews of quadrocopters with detailed descriptions and comments. You can find the same videos in the description of each product posted on our website, as well as leave your feedback and comments if you have already been lucky enough to test yourself in flight, or ask questions of interest.

Often called the best copter in the world. Due to its design, functionality and a number of other qualities, this drone is one of the most popular, if not the most popular. Developers, however, continue to release all new devices, not stopping there. Not so long ago, they introduced an even more functional system, which was called the DJI Phantom 4 Pro.

This is the "heir" of the DJI Phantom. Obviously, this model was taken as a basis. It has been thoroughly improved, plus several new features have been added, while improving the old ones. One of the main additions is a 5-axis obstacle avoidance system. By the way, there is another drone model, optional. She received the name Phantom 4 Pro Plus. But it's still the same Phantom 4 Pro, only with a controller equipped with a touch screen. If you want to purchase the most advanced version, you will have to pay another $ 300.

In order to provide their drone with "sense organs", the developers have added sensors on the front, sides and bottom. All these elements constantly scan the surrounding space around the drone and if an obstacle is noticed, the copter flies around it.

Another big improvement is the drone camera. The system uses updated hardware, thanks to which the camera can shoot video in 4K quality with a refresh rate of 60 frames. As for photos, everything is still 20 MP. There is a mechanical "curtain" and aperture control. Now the camera of the device looks and works better than ever before.

Build quality and design

Phantom 4 Pro is almost identical to the previous model - this concerns, first of all, the design and build quality. Its appearance is the same, except for a few sensors. It is surprising that the company has been able to add a lot of new things while keeping the same dimensions of the drone and leaving its design almost unchanged.

As for the additional sensors mentioned above, they are placed in the landing legs of the system. At the same time, infrared and optical sensors are placed on the left and right sides of the aircraft. The camera looks (and is) larger than the previous model. This is understandable - after all, its capabilities have been significantly improved, in particular, the size of the CMOS sensor has been increased.

The only drawback of the system in terms of design can be considered that it is not portable enough. At least not like the DJI Mavic Pro. Landing legs and propellers do not fold. Actually, the drone was not designed as portable, so if you need to transport it, this should be taken into account. By the way, a backpack was designed specifically for the Phantoms

Offline mode and charging time

Under optimal conditions, the drone can stay in the air for up to half an hour. But, of course, optimal flight conditions are not so often. Interference like the wind can reduce autonomous flight time, but not by much, just a few minutes. In a test consisting of a series of 10 flights, the average value of the autonomous mode was about 27 minutes. The registered minimum is 23 minutes with a penny.

Actually, it is close to what is stated by the developers. Half an hour is a great indicator. After all, for example, Hover Camera Password can stay in the air for no more than 10 minutes, after which you either need to change the battery or wait until the drone is charged.

With 10% left in the battery, the Phantom 4 Pro's battery was fully charged in about an hour and a half. And this is also a good result, since in many similar models the battery takes about two hours to fully charge.

Flight capabilities

The Phantom 4 Pro has practically the same flight functionality as the original Phantom 4. Everything is good here - both speed and maneuvering at altitude. The maximum speed of the drone is about 72 km/h. If the wind hits the “tail” of the drone, then the speed will be even higher.

As mentioned above, the drone can avoid obstacles, which is simply necessary for a system of this level. The copter performs the necessary maneuvers independently.

Autopilot is good here. The Phantom 4 Pro can follow the owner, circle around a set point, follow a specific route, or return home. In addition to the previous functions of the autonomous flight system, the developers used novelties. These are Terrain Follow, Tripod Mode, Active Track modes.

Terrain Follow was previously only available on the Mavic Pro. Here, using its sensors, the drone constantly maintains a certain altitude. In the process of flying over the ground, the copter repeats all the noticeable surface irregularities, rising and falling in accordance with the shape of the terrain. In this mode, the operator can shoot excellent videos.

For snapshots, it's best to use the Tripode mode. Here, the drone can be “hung” at any point in space to take a picture. Actually, the Phantom 4 Pro in this mode of operation turns into a flying tripod. In order to stay in one place without shifting, the system uses a bunch of sensors + GPS.

In Active Track mode, it can follow an object in any direction, or start circling around a user-selected point.

And, of course, if an obstacle is encountered, the drone flies around it autonomously. Obstacle avoidance in automatic mode can be turned off, which allows the operator to perform risky stunts.

The automatic return “home” works in such a way that the copter repeats its flight in reverse order, returning to the starting point.

Distance

The Phantom 4 Pro does better here than the original P4. The drone can move away from the operator at a distance of up to 7 kilometers. In this case, the video in HD mode is still transmitted to the operator. True, at the maximum distance, the drone can only work under optimal conditions. Roughness of the surface, presence of trees or houses, other obstacles - all this can greatly reduce the distance indicated above.

Camera and accessories

One of the reasons to buy the more advanced Phantom 4 Pro instead of the Phantom 4 is, of course, the camera. The company has done some serious work to improve the capabilities of the camera, and it certainly succeeded.

The size of the CMOS sensor here is four times larger than most other drone cameras, including the Phantom 4, smartphones and digital cameras. This allows you to receive both video and photos in excellent quality.

As mentioned above, there is a diaphragm control system and a mechanical shutter. Camera modes include 4K DCI at 24, 25, or 30 fps. Another mode is 4K UHD at 24, 25, 30, or 60 fps. If this is too much, then the quality of the shooting can be reduced down to 2.7K, 1080p, and 720p.

As for the one mentioned, it comes with a controller with a built-in touch screen. This is somewhat more convenient than working with a connected smartphone, although, on the other hand, you will have to pay $ 300 for this.

What is the result?

We can definitely say that the Phantom 4 Pro is one of the best drones money can buy. Possibly the best drone in its category. The camera, the autopilot, the distance the drone can fly all add to the pluses.

Of course, this is not a cheap copter at all. You can buy Phantom 4 Pro in Russia at. However, it is worth its money. This is no longer a toy, but a powerful tool that photographers, filmmakers, scientists and representatives of many other specialties can use.

We present to your attention a review of the DJI Phantom 4 Pro quadcopter, as well as detailed instructions for setting up and using the gadget, specifications, and features that you should know about.

In October 2016, the Chinese manufacturer released professional version of the well-known "Phantom 4".

Today, the gadget still occupies a leading position in the ranking of the best drones in the global technology market.

According to the promises of the manufacturer, the improved copter is able to fly even faster and is much better to control than the previous version.

Advanced shooting modes can also be seen with the naked eye.

Let us consider in more detail all the features, characteristics and capabilities of the device, as well as a list of actions that must be performed before the first launch of the gadget.

Content:

Assembly and design

Production material - titanium alloy . It allows the device to maintain a high level of strength and low weight at the same time.

The appearance of the new version practically does not differ from the previous models of the Phantom line.

The manufacturer managed to add new features and functions while maintaining the same dimensions, which is undoubtedly the main advantage of the model.

The disadvantage of the assembly is poor portability - the supports do not fold. This means that you will need a large bag or backpack to carry the gadget.

This disadvantage is insignificant, and a stable support, on the contrary, allows you to increase the strength of the gadget.

Specifications

Detailed specifications of the drone are presented in the table:

Also, the device supports satellite navigation:

  • GPS;
  • GLONASS- Russian version of the GPS system.

The drone detects obstacles at a distance of 0.2 meters and up to 7 meters (depending on the dimensions of the obstacles and their position in space).

Battery operation and charging

If necessary, you can lower the quality of the shooting and the desired size of the final file.

In the new version, the camera received even more options: improved image processing system, resolution, matrix dimension.

The matrix is increased by 4 times– 24 mm (compared to the previous model). This allows you to significantly expand the viewing angles.

The sensor allows you to capture more details of the landscape, expand the dynamics in the frame.

Fig.3 - device camera

The camera shoots perfectly even in twilight and poor lighting indoors (supported light sensitivity ISO 12800 ).

Thanks to the built-in visual effects that can be customized by the user, you can significantly improve the light transmission in the frame.

The function of determining the appropriate level of contrast and detail for each object allows you to create and also saves the maximum number of information pixels, which simplifies further editing (or photo processing).

A comparison of light sensitivity, signal-to-noise level, and camera dynamics of DJI Pro 4 and DJI 4 is shown in the graphs below.

As you can see, the new version really allows you to get the best image quality among the entire line of devices from DJI .

Object detection

This model makes it easy to detect all objects moving around. The figure below shows an example of the display of the control panel toolbar during the flight of the drone.

In the process of control, you can not only see the location on the radar in the left corner of the screen, but also perform the following actions:

  • Perform a stop;
  • View detected objects (they will be highlighted) and, if necessary, focus on the desired person, animal or object.

Notice, the quadcopter is capable of not only detecting moving objects, but also following them and capturing every movement. A very good feature for fans of capturing the panorama of events of various festivals, concerts and other events.

Also, the set shooting mode and other image parameters are displayed on the control screen.

Preparing the drone for flight

Before the first start, carefully read the instructions below.

Failure to complete all steps may result in errors in the operation of the gadget, uneven flight, or failures during video recording.

Pre-flight setup includes a set of actions with the drone itself and its remote control:

1 Take the device and detach the suspension clip from the camera module as shown in the image below:

2 The next step is installation of propellers. Take the parts with black markings and attach them to the motors with the same designation. Propellers with gray markings should be attached to motors without visual trim. Be careful at this step, because an incorrect fastening can cause a fall and its irreversible damage;

3 After installing the propellers, you can proceed to turn on the gadget. At first insert the battery into a special compartment. The direction of the battery and the location of the compartment are shown in the figure below:

Important! The battery should fit snugly against the body of the drone. Install it until a characteristic click appears. Insecure fastening of the battery affects the safety of work.

Now you should move on to setting up the remote control. First you need to adjust the smartphone holder so that the phone fits without problems in it.

At the same time, the smartphone should not “ride” or slide.

You can also use as a mobile device. The installed holder allows you to work with devices whose diagonal is 10 inches or less.

Follow the instructions to attach your smart gadget:

4 Press the key with which the clamp is retracted. It is located on the top of the holder. Then install the clip so that it fits a smartphone or tablet;

5 Check if the phone is securely fixed;

6 Now connect your smartphone to the remote control with . The connector for connecting third-party gadgets is located on the back cover of the remote control;

7 First you need to activate the required mode using the remote control and start the device. Thanks to the connected gadget, the user can watch in real time the frames or videos that the copter shoots.

"Phantom" supports the work of the autopilot, it can follow the owner, fly around a point specified on the map or move along a predetermined route.

Drone Operation Indicators

It has two LEDs to indicate the operating mode. The front diode lights up red, signaling that it is on and ready to start.

Status indicators are required to visually identify flight modes and other activated options.

Also, the part is used to display warning signals.

With their help, you will be able to recognize the loss of a signal, the error of the compass or the calibration system in time.

Available modes

Supports several options at once to create the best shooting conditions. To change the mode, use the special switch located on the control panel.

The following modes are available in the model:

  • Positioning(or R-mode);

It should be used if the GPS signal is strong enough. The mode allows you to increase the distance and supports the function of stereo vision. To hold and smoothly change the position, a special infrared system for detecting the copter in space is used.

  • Sport(or S-mode);

This option allows you to increase maneuverability even at high speed. The gadget can easily move quickly in space. Also, the sensitivity of the remote control increases while operating in sport mode.

In the process of sports photography, the drone achieves a maximum speed of 72 km/h. This indicator is one of the fastest among all drones on the market.

The minimum distance for braking in this mode is 50 meters (in windy weather, the braking distance can be increased to an average of 90 meters).

Note! Sports mode greatly speeds up the aircraft and disables obstacle detection. That is why it is not advisable to use sports photography on objects with a large number of tall trees and other obstacles that can hook the gadget.

  • Stabilization(or A-mode).

This option is suitable for measured shooting of an area or event. The copter flies smoothly, does not make sharp turns.

Also, to save battery and smooth movement in this mode, optical detection is also disabled.

The stabilization option implies only the use of the built-in barometer - it holds the altitude.

Return to "Home"

Setting the return to the last recorded point function will help return the device to the place where it was last stopped in cases such as:

  • Low battery;
  • Error detection;
  • Violation of calibration;
  • Emergency collision with third-party objects (while maintaining the efficiency of the propellers).

To activate the mode "Smart Return" press the appropriate "Go Back" button on the remote control.
