[Video] HTC Desire 500 Review: Difficulties of Choice

The meaning of this lengthy introduction is simple - I really find it difficult to find who can buy HTC Desire 500 in such a difficult situation. But, in anyway, I promise to figure it out in the process of this review.

Average price segment of phones to which HTC belongs Desire 500 is going through languid times. Earlier, 5 years ago, everything was simple - Nokia is a bit more ordinary than Nokia of the last year. If you're lucky, some warehouse leftovers from the year before last, which were scraped all over Europe, at the cost of a push-button telephone. This is not the case at the moment. Everything is difficult. There are flagship phones. They are on everyone's lips - everyone talks about them. Price tags around 6000 hryvnia. There are last year's flagship phones - all the same, but last year's and with a price tag of about 4000 hryvnia (no need to throw slippers at me - this is a rough estimate). There are economical models - the bottom of the market, where no advertising is needed anymore, where clogged warehouse leftovers, promotional offers and bitterness of sales below the purchase price reign, which retail does not like to talk about. For example, Allo is currently selling Fly IQ442 Miracle 2 for 999 hryvnia. In general, there is no point in feeling sorry for retail - from time to time, specifically on cheap models, purchased on occasions at prohibitively inexpensive, stores have a gigantic (if counting in percentage) margins. And in general, the retail business is such, occasionally remains at a loss.

But when it comes to phones that are between the sacred 2000 and 4000 hryvnia, where there are 10 models, the choice becomes difficult. A client of an apparatus with a budget within these limits simply cannot but experience problems. It’s great when he decided on the platform, and this is iOS (you need to find something in your hands in good condition, the dangers of acquiring, for example, a drowned man, are significant) or Windows Phone (each price sector has its own Nokia Lumia). But if we are talking about Android, then you need to either become a professional in the matter, re-reading the countless websites and forums with reviews of "experienced". Either rely on the will of the option or the mercy of a merchant in a not distant store. By the way, I urge you to count on the merchant the least. He may be a good guy, but he has motivation and attitudes to sell certain models, which makes the choice of a phone profitable for him, not for the buyer. In general, the process of "becoming an expert" is thorny and complicated. Everyone has different ideas about a wonderful or, God forgive me, impeccable phone (that's why there are so many "experts" on the web, there is simply nowhere to spit so as not to get into a professional). Preferences in the middle of brands come into force, glances at brands of the 2nd wave, research which microprocessors are more productive, which screens are better, and, obviously, countless legends - where can we go without them.

In hardware, we have an analogue of HTC Desire 600 (the same microprocessor, amount of RAM), but there is only one SIM card (although HTC Desire 500 has modifications with 2 SIM cards, but they are not supplied to our market) and the screen has the smallest diagonal and the smallest resolution. Programmatically, we are dealing with Android 4.1 and HTC Sense 5.0 (it contains a proprietary application that automatically creates 30-second video clips from photo albums, which was shown for the first time on HTC One). Well, the Desire 500 costs a thousand hryvnia less, which looks presentable. Surely, this phone can be called a replacement for the HTC One SV model, which made very suitable memories for me. Compared to the One SV, the Desire 500 has improved performance and feels like a slightly better camera. Although she has lost the ability to record videos in FullHD.

HTC Desire 500 appearance

To say that HTC Desire 500 looks presentable is to say nothing. A beautiful lacquered body, a beautiful view, neat proportions by modern standards, a screen protruding as a step (I saw such a solution for the first time, I remember, in the Nokia 700 and there it also looked curious, although in that phone the step was at the bottom, while the Desire 500 top).

The screen of HTC Desire can be called evenly catchy, with good viewing angles. The manufacturer does not declare the technology of its production anywhere, and there is nowhere to test it in the brightest sun at this time of year. But otherwise I liked everything, apart from the huge number of small scratches that appeared after a couple of weeks of use. In general, this is not very indicative, since I manage to scratch any monitors, despite the fact that I never carry phones in the same pocket with the keys (however, I almost always carry them in 2 or even 3 in one pocket).

These 2 pictures (top and bottom) show a step-like protrusion, the top end of the phone with a power button and a headphone jack.

I couldn't resist a couple of shots where the varnished surface creates beautiful reflections. Unfortunately, these pictures are only partly beautiful. Fingerprints and scratches can be seen from a different angle.

In general, lacquered phone cases are a constant double-edged sword and a rake for buyers. They look very beautiful when you shoot film from your phone - just pure delight, really. But after a few weeks, disappointment sets in, and grief replaces delight.

Another feature of HTC Desire 500, as well as parts of HTC smartphones of 2013, starting with HTC One - two hard keys instead of three. Let me remind you that the context menu key in Android has become superfluous - a special key has appeared in most applications. And to call the application manager, you do not need to hold down, but press the Home key twice in the form of a house.

The back cover, as I said, is made in the form of a galoshes and you need to remove it by hooking the cover by the corner at the edge of the display.

This design of the back cover allows you to expose some elements of the smartphone, usually hidden from our eyes. For example, the earpiece and the power key.

This is how the volume keys look nude.

And so - a speaker for music and speakerphone. It is traditionally biased to the side, while the mesh on the back cover is placed strictly in the center.

Usually, camera lenses in phones are standard dust collectors. But in this case it seemed to me that HTC Desire 500 does not have this effect. And the lens is positioned so that it can only be scratched on purpose.

Performance HTC Desire 500

The use of a 4-core processor with not the fastest Cortex A5 core is still more good for such a smartphone than evil. On the one hand, the performance for a device priced at 2500 hryvnia turns out to be quite high, on the other hand, the smartphone heats up to a lesser extent than the flagship heaters. In Antutu, the performance of HTC Desire 500 corresponds to the flagship of two years ago - Samsung Galaxy S II, in the Vellamo browser benchmark the situation looks at all at the level of HTC One X - the flagship of last year. In practice, I must say that games started to slow down only if a daily used package, including Twitter, Facebook, was hung in the smartphone's memory. Foursquare, Instagram, and a browser and music player.

Camera HTC Desire 500

Of course, the camera in the HTC Desire 500 is far from being the pinnacle of technology, judging by the results. But I can't help but note that HTC has come a long way over the past 2 years (and the entire industry, between us) in the area of \u200b\u200bimproving images. It is worth saying that the advent of back-illuminated sensors (BSI technology) has led me to gradually stop using flash in my phones. Although a couple of years ago, one such thought seemed seditious to me. Take a look at night shots - with 8 megapixels and the fact that we've been looking at photos on our phones, tablets and computers for a long time, the results are pretty good. Especially when you think about the price tag of this smartphone. Shooting indoors also looks pretty decent, but dull autumn landscapes, shot in cloudy weather, predictably sin with faded colors and aggressive noise reduction. Although, of course, they look just fine on the phone screen.

You can see all these pictures in their original resolution in a separate gallery.

Competitive environment

If in the line of HTC itself the Desire 500 model occupies a certain intermediate place between the Desire 200 (or rather, the soon-to-be-released Desire 300) and the Desire 600, then competitors in the same price category have a dime a dozen. There are plenty to choose from. If we focus on the price, then the direct competitor can be safely called Huawei Honor 2, which received our Editor's Choice award. It has a beautiful HD IPS display and 8GB of storage. Yes, and "bare" Android (by the way, it was updated to 4.1?) Samsung fans can look away Samsung Galaxy S III Mini. It is a little over six months old, but in all respects it is hardly inferior to HTC Desire 500 (it loses in performance and megapixel camera, but it has large resources of internal memory). Fans of pragmatic shopping can also check out the Alcatel OneTouch Idol Ultra, with its 16GB storage and 4.65-inch HD display. Also, the Sony Xperia M looks no worse in terms of characteristics with its 4-inch screen with a resolution of 854x480 pixels. And this is only a small fraction of what can be offered as an alternative. Another thing is that HTC Desire 500 does not have one clear competitor, which will be considered as an alternative. As it happens, for example, in the segment of flagships. But a simple and understandable segment, in which Desire 500 is the best, is not to be seen either.

In the dry residue

The HTC Desire 500 smartphone combines a nice design with good catchy finds: spaced volume keys and a protruding step display, and excellent performance for its class (a 4-core processor with a gigabyte of RAM and a resolution of 800 × 480 shows excellent results). At the same time, the Desire 500 has a fairly easily soiled case (in any case, this is true for black) and it can be recommended to fans of the brand sooner, because performance issues are critical only for geeks. And geeks can find even more stuffed models for the same money. Including among the "correct" Chinese like Huawei or Lenovo. Not to mention the mass B-brands all using cheaper MediaTek products instead of Qualcomm processors. Such are the difficulties of choice.

2 reasons to buy HTC Desire 500:

  • nice appearance;
  • high performance for its price segment.

2 reasons not to buy the HTC Desire 500:

  • very easily soiled lacquered case, easily subject to scratches;
  • desire to get more diagonal or more screen resolution for the same money.

The life of a modern person who values \u200b\u200bthe convenience of communications is hard to imagine without a smartphone. Today it is not only a means of communication, but also a device for listening to audio recordings, watching videos, taking photos and free access to the Internet.

Along with the convenience, users of Desire 500, as well as owners of smartphones from other brands, can expect some unpleasant "surprises" - no one is immune from this. So, it is not uncommon for the owner to enter the installed pattern incorrectly several times in a row or forget the password for his google account. It cannot be ruled out that the device freezes for unknown reasons or, even worse, does not turn on at all. These and other operational problems can be solved by a simple Hard Reset procedure - cardinal, but very effective.

This operation is a hard reset of HTC Desire 500, which returns the phone to factory settings. The actions are individual for each smartphone. If you are faced with one of the inconveniences described above, or simply decided to update the system of your device for the purpose of "prevention", feel free to proceed with the Hard reset procedure.

Note! Performing a Hard reset will invariably remove all files and programs from the device itself. The data saved on the SD card will remain intact, however, for complete safety, it is recommended to remove it.

You can always make a backup copy of important documents. If Hard reset was not part of your plans, and valuable files were nevertheless deleted, you can partially or completely restore them using the program.

In any case, you should understand that the reliability of the HTC Desire 500 smartphone depends only on you. But if you already have problems, Hard reset is your only reasonable solution.

Hard reset on HTC Desire 500 smartphone

Option one: the device is turned on, the display responds to your touch.

1. Go to settings. To do this, open “Notifications” and select the appropriate option from the menu that opens.
2. Use the "Restore and Reset" function.
3. In the window that opens, select the "Reset phone settings" item.
4. Delete all data (of course, taking care of their safety in advance) by clicking "Delete all data".
5. Confirm the previous actions and click "OK".

Option two: the device is in off mode or the sensor does not respond to your actions.

1. First, achieve a complete shutdown of the smartphone by removing the battery and re-placing it in the slot after 2-3 seconds.
2. Press and hold two keys at the same time: Volume Down (down) and the Power button.

3. After a couple of seconds, an image with three Android icons will appear on the screen of the mobile device. Only then can you release the two indicated keys.
4. Operate the volume down button to select the option you want. Find the Factory Reset option this way. Immediately after that, press the "Power" button.
