A favicon is a small icon of 16x16 or 32x32 pixels, usually containing a logo, the first letter of the brand, or a characteristic image that reflects the type of business or the theme of the site.

Why is the favicon important?

The favicon performs the following functions:

Branding.

Site identification by the user (usability).

Gives the website a professional look.

Let's dwell in more detail on the main advantages of using a favicon.

Brand recognition

Favicon is like a small site identity. As stated in the introduction, the favicon helps the user remember your site among the many sites they have visited. Whether it's browsing history, Google search results, or the bookmarked list of sites in your browser, favicons help users easily recognize and visit your site.

Confidence

Users tend to judge the sellers of goods and services on the Internet based on how professional their website is. Negligence in the form of the absence of a favicon ( search engines display a site without a favicon with a blank document icon) can easily lead to a loss of trust, especially when users compare you to your competitors.

Repeated visits

People are known to respond better to images than text. Now, suppose a visitor to your site was in a rush when he first visited it and decided to bookmark it to come back later. Let's say that this person subsequently decides to visit your site again, for which he refers to his bookmarks. You're in luck if you have a recognizable favicon, such as Google's prominent and unique letter G, and the user will find you. If there is no favicon, you may even be removed from the bookmark list.

Saves user time

Favicons save the time spent by the user identifying a site in bookmarks, history, or other places where the browser places a favicon for quick identification. It just makes life easier for the average visitor to your site.

SEO Benefits

If your site has a favicon, you will be seen better in search results than sites that do not have it, and therefore will be able to attract more visitors.

Favicon - the face of your resource in the browser

Very often, when opening a site in a browser, users see a small icon next to the resource URL - a favicon, which, in fact, is the face of an Internet project. Favicon is an abbreviation for the English phrase "favorites ICON", which stands for "favorites icon". If you have "equipped" your resource with a favicon, then it will be able to stand out favorably against the background of other sites opened by the user in the browser tabs. Very often a favicon is a small copy of the logo of an Internet project or company (for example, like that of Wikipedia, Google or Facebook), but you can also see specially created icons that simply reflect the essence or theme of the project. The first favicon appeared in 1999, when the search corporation Microsoft introduced its Internet Explorer 5 web browser: it was in this version of the browser that support for miniature icons for sites began. And in 2003, the favicon format was officially registered with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). Now Microsoft has lost its monopoly in this niche, and that's all modern browsers(both desktop and mobile) support favicons. What is the Favicon Generator tool for? With the "Favicon Generator" tool you can create a unique favicon for your site. To do this, you just need to load the original image in a special field, the size of which should not exceed 150 Kb, select the required size of the future icon (16x16 or 32x32 pixels) and click the "Convert" button. The resulting icon in ICO format can be used for posting on the Web: it will be compatible with most modern browsers. Please note that many modern web browsers automatically load favicon.ico from the resource root without requiring it to be specified in page codes. However, if the webmaster wants to use a separate favicon for each page of the site, then he must indicate its position within the section in the HTML code of the resource. Also note that the icon will not be displayed in the browser if its Content-type in the response of the web server does not match the specified header field in the page code. What should a good favicon look like? Despite the fact that the size of the favicon is very small (16x16 or 32x32 pixels), this icon carries a very large semantic load, and its creation is a rather complicated process that takes web designers as much time as the development of a full-fledged logo. It often happens that a company logo is absolutely inappropriate for the role of a favicon. In this case, you will have to use all your skill and imagination. The future favicon should be embedded in the user's memory so hard that in the future this icon will be associated exclusively with your resource. When creating a favicon, you will not be able to "scatter" pixels: each of the 256 (or 1024) pixels has a meaning. Correct beforehand manually pixels that have a "foggy" color, because when compressing the picture, the icon may turn out to be blurry and will require correction in graphic editor... Favicon generator - will help you transform and edit any image, turning it into a favicon for the site. Today is an article about the best favicon generator for sites today.

Now it's hard to imagine a site that doesn't have a favicon. A favicon is an icon that is located in the address bar of the browser or in the title of the window (depending on the browser), and which distinguishes the open site / tab from many others. Initially, these icons were designed in IE in order to highlight a site in the browser's bookmark list (in IE, these bookmarks were called Favorites, and hence the name Favicon - the favorites icon.

But making a favicon with your own hands is not so easy. It must have an ICO format that requires special software in order to do something worthwhile and considerable skill. Therefore, to simplify life, it is better to use an online favicon generator.

There are many services that allow you to generate a favicon from images (this can be a logo, or a specially designed illustration). But most of them have transparency issues.

Transparency issues with the favicon generator service

For clarity, we present an illustration "How different favicon generators handle transparency and image reduction."

In this comparison, we used the results from favicon.cc and favicon-generator.org services. To be honest, until recently, they themselves used the favicon.cc service, but recently there was an excellent substitute - favicon generator # 1.

Best favicon generator - www.xiconeditor.com

Like favicon.cc, this favicon generator has its own built-in online icon editor, but its advantage is that it works great with transparency.

It is quite obvious that there is a difference in the quality of the transparency transfer (apparently the difference is in the quality of resizing the loaded image).

In addition, xiconeditor.com has another advantage - an excellent favicon preview system, which allows you to view the result in different guises without loading the generated favicon. Their previews are much more informative than favicon.cc.
