How long will the selfie trend last? Is it long enough to buy a special phone for self-portraits? Will such devices be able to push the most famous flagship devices at least a little?

In May-August 2012, HTC introduced three Desire smartphones. They will have to withstand internal competition with models of the One family, announced in February and have long taken place on store shelves. And if we can leave the modest Desire C out of the comparison, then the new Desire V and Desire X will not hurt to compare with actively sold HTC devices, assessing the prospects for new products and the degree of demand from potential buyers. Upper segment: One X, One S and Sensation

The primacy and flagship status of the One X and One S models cannot be disputed. Today, these are the most technologically advanced and most attractive smartphones of the Taiwanese company.

We included the flagship of the second half of 2011 - Sensation in the club of top devices. The device lacks the latest Sense 4.1 software shell and fancy camera optics, and has a relatively weak battery. But in other respects, Sensation is ahead of its younger competitors from the Desire line. Desire X, announced on August 30th, looks like a promising smartphone to us. The device received the latest versions of Android and HTC Sense (shell number 4.1, except for Desire X, is installed only on the two “top” One models), a balanced dual-core processor, sufficient RAM and internal memory (expandable through memory cards and Dropbox), decent camera (similar to cameras in flagship solutions), the screen is not the smallest size and a relatively capacious battery.

The Desire X, the latest smartphone in HTC's lineup at the time of this review, could become a bestseller in the second half of 2012 if the manufacturer doesn't make a mistake with its pricing. If the price of Desire X is higher than 14 thousand rubles, it will compete with Incredible S among other HTC products, which can still be found in stores for 13 thousand rubles (and in the secondary market this device is sold for 8-9 thousand rubles).

The outsiders of our comparison are models with the V index from both lines that have remained in HTC's arsenal today. The manufacturer provided the Desire V and One V with a stripped-down version of the Sense 4 software shell, outdated processors and a small amount of RAM. And if the "two-SIM" Desire V with a capacious battery and a nice design can still find its buyer, then One V runs the risk of quickly disappearing from the market, especially after the appearance of Desire X on it.

Unfortunately, the maximum pleasure from using all the delights of the Desire 12+ smartphone will not be achieved. If the combination of two lenses is used differently in most modern smartphones, the second camera of HTC Desire 12+ serves only for the most optimal focusing on different objects, that is, it is not used as an additional lens. It is designed to recreate the "Bokeh" mode, in which the depth of color and background is determined as accurately as possible, as a result of which a realistic shot is created. Focusing during frame capture can also be adjusted manually by touching the objects you want to focus on with your fingers.

While this is a definite plus, the benefit of having a second camera can be minimal. The smartphone does not have optical stabilization of the captured frame, so a certain time may elapse between focus lock and the very moment of shooting (fractions of a second, but they decide how clear the picture will be).

If a user takes a photo with HTC Desire 12+ in poor lighting conditions, then he needs to prepare for the fact that the gadget will focus even longer. This, of course, will reduce the noise level in such images and improve the quality, but it will also take a little more time.

But what the company can definitely boast about is the most accurate color reproduction. The resulting photos are not compressed and are highly detailed.

Video

The maximum video resolution is 1920x1080 pixels, which allows you to shoot in HD 1080p. One of the interesting implemented features is the simultaneous recording of video and shooting a photo Video Pic. Unfortunately, the developers did not provide for adding any special effects like a screen filter, adding effects, or even simple recording in Slow Motion mode, although such functions are present in the vast majority of smartphones of previous generations.

Video settings are standard. The user can manually adjust the ISO, white balance, the simplest color effects (sepia, negative, etc.), exposure and use the scene selection mode.

Front-camera

As the love of selfies continues in the modern world, the HTC Desire 12+ comes with a powerful enough front camera to help you take crisp, clear shots. The maximum resolution is 8 MP. It is possible to set a timer up to 10 seconds. Thanks to the face detection function, the camera will always autofocus exactly on the user.

There is a convenient shooting enhancement mode that allows you to set the required parameters in real time and achieve perfect photos.

If necessary, the user can record video in HD 1080p (with a maximum resolution of up to 1920x1080). If you are shooting photos or videos in poor lighting conditions, the LED flash will always come to the rescue. It, of course, is not as bright as on the back side, but it can still illuminate everything at a distance of 1-2 meters.

Sound and music playback quality

Speaker placement has always been a contentious issue in the smartphone world. Each manufacturer is confident in its own rightness, as a result of which, in different phones, the speakers are located on the back side, below or on the sides. In HTC Desire 12+, the developers decided not to follow the corporate style of the company (in most devices, the speaker is located on the back, in close proximity to the camera), but placed it just below, on the right.

This does not affect the quality of music playback, but such an arrangement can cause a little discomfort, because it is this place that blocks the palm of a person when he holds the phone in his hand. In order to listen to music or watch movies with maximum comfort, you will have to get used to holding the phone in a certain way.

The speaker itself is monophonic (only one). While most competitors are equipped with stereo, HTC decided: since the model is budget, then the "stuffing" should be appropriate.
