Comparison of iPhone 6 and Galaxy. Built-in memory and SD card

Apple and Samsung have been major rivals in the smartphone market for many years. And if in the past few years their rivalry partly took place in court, this year the manufacturers have completely switched to fighting within the framework of technology. And this had a positive effect on the companies’ flagship devices. First, Apple introduced the iPhone 6, admitting that it was a mistake not to release large smartphones. And now Samsung has launched the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, which have received new body materials. At the same time, with the iPhone 6, Apple has already managed to significantly increase sales and regain lost positions in the market. Let's see what response Samsung has prepared to its rival with the Galaxy S6 edge.

With Apple making significant changes to its smartphones every generation, and with the iPhone 6s set to hit the market this year, we thought a comparison of the current generation iPhone with the Galaxy S6 edge would be helpful. Moreover, the devices will directly compete with each other for at least another six months. Most of what is written below will also be valid when directly comparing the Galaxy S6 with the iPhone 6.

A little about the testing itself

In order to make summarizing test results simpler and clearer, devices will receive from 1 to 10 points for each section. The winner will be determined based on their total.

Materials, build quality

In the past, Samsung used plastic in its flagship models, while Apple preferred glass and metal. Actually, the lion's share of criticism towards Samsung designers was based on the use of plastic. This year the situation has changed dramatically.

In the Galaxy S6 edge model, the company for the first time used aircraft-grade aluminum, which creates a rigid frame for the body, as well as Gorilla Glass 4. The latter differs from third-generation glass in increased strength and, according to specifications, can withstand a fall from a height of 1.2 meters onto a hard surface.

A new approach to materials, as well as the elimination of a removable rear cover, allowed Samsung to create a very high-quality case, with a tight fit of all elements.

In the iPhone 6, Apple has traditionally used anodized aluminum, as well as glass covering the display on the front panel. All this is connected into a monolithic body, with a good fit of all parts.

As a result, both models stand out for their use of high-quality materials and excellent build quality, as befits flagships.

Ease of use

The smartphones presented in comparison have different display diagonals, but in terms of size they are quite comparable.

The height and width of the Apple iPhone 6 is 138.1 x 67 mm, with a thickness of 6.9 mm. The smartphone turned out to be really thin and not very wide, which allows the thumb to reach the top of the display.

The power button on the iPhone 6 is located on the right side, and the volume control is on the left.

Thanks to their successful placement, both the thumb and the index finger fit equally well on them.

The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, despite the large diagonal, are 142.1 x 70.1 x 7 mm. The smartphone came out a little taller and wider than the iPhone 6, but at the same time retained dimensions that were comfortable for use.

The S6 edge fits well in the hand, although its edges may initially seem overly sharp, in practice this is not the case. The placement of the power button and volume keys here is similar to the iPhone 6.

Today, this is the best option for implementing good ergonomics in a smartphone.

Thus, both models perform well in everyday use. The dimensions of the iPhone 6 will most likely appeal to those who are switching from models with a smaller body diagonal. Otherwise, the Galaxy S6 edge, with the same level of ergonomics, looks advantageous due to more rational use of the front panel area.

Display

The Galaxy S6 edge uses a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen display with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. All this allows the screen to produce an image with a pixel density of 577 per inch. Thanks to this, the Galaxy S6 edge managed to significantly improve the quality of the picture, which is now closer to high-quality glossy magazines.

Another feature of the Galaxy S6 edge is that it folds over the right and left edges of the case. This not only looks impressive, but is also functional. The curved edges of the case make scrolling through lists more comfortable.

The use of a curved display also creates an interesting visual effect where the bezels on the sides of the screen appear to be miniature. But in fact, they are large enough to protect the screen if dropped.

The maximum brightness of the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge display is 600 cd/m2, and the minimum is 2 cd/m2. The factory calibration of the smartphone screen is done at a good level, but differs significantly depending on the selected mode. The optimal mode, according to our measurements, is the “Photo AMOLED” mode. In it, the screen shows more than 100% coverage of the sRGB color space with a large bias towards green. At the same time, its temperature is within 6500K, and its gamma is at the level of 2.2-2.3, which is a good indicator.

The display in the iPhone 6 has a diagonal of 4.7 inches with a resolution of 1334×750 pixels, which produces an image with a pixel density of 326 per inch.

Apple has traditionally used an IPS matrix, but this time with dual-domain pixel technology, which allows for wider viewing angles of the screen. This development is based on the idea that not all pixels need to be aligned. Instead, they can be beveled when viewed from the perspective of lines defined by the rectangular edges of the display, thereby compensating for uneven illumination.

Despite the lower resolution and ppi, the iPhone 6 display looks very good. Its maximum brightness level reaches 500 cd/m2, and the minimum is 4.7 cd/m2, which is an excellent indicator for IPS screens. The factory display calibration in the iPhone 6 is done at a very good level.

Overall, both screens leave a good impression, but in a direct comparison, the Galaxy S6 edge's display looks better, being larger, sharper and with richer colors.

Performance

The smartphones in our comparison are built on their own processors. The iPhone is powered by a 1.4GHz dual-core 64-bit A8 processor, which is built using a 20nm process technology. The Galaxy S6 edge is powered by a 64-bit 14nm Exynos 7420 processor clocked at 1.5GHz and 2.1GHz. The AnTuTu performance test for iOS and Android is different, but it generally allows you to evaluate the level of performance of devices. In this parameter, the Exynos 7420 outperforms the A8.

However, given the lower display resolution, the iPhone 6's processor will be sufficient for most tasks. In the Galaxy S6 edge, the performance of the Exynos 7420 is sufficient not only for current demanding applications and games, the processor has a good power reserve that will allow it to remain relevant for a couple of years.

At the same time, when switching between the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6 edge, the difference in the amount of RAM is clearly visible. Samsung's flagship uses 3 GB, while Apple decided to stick with only 1 GB. For a flagship smartphone, this is not enough. As a result, switching between open applications and browser tabs is more comfortable on the S6 edge.

The built-in data storage, depending on the modification, in the iPhone 6 starts from 16 GB, and in the Galaxy S6 edge from 32 GB, and both models do not have slots for memory cards.

Camera

The Galaxy S6 edge uses a 16-megapixel camera with f/1.9 aperture and optical stabilization. The iPhone 6 has an 8-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture and dual flash.

As you can see from the pictures, the Galaxy S6 edge camera has better detail in pictures due to its larger aperture and resolution. Apple squeezed the maximum possible out of Sony's 8-megapixel photo module, but it could easily have been replaced with another one with greater aperture and resolution.

Fingerprint's scanner

To unlock the display, as well as to purchase applications in the company store, the Galaxy S6 edge and iPhone 6 can use a fingerprint scanner.

In both cases, they are combined with a mechanical Home button under their displays. The operating principle of the scanners is the same; to unlock, you just need to place your finger on their surface.

At the same time, they work equally well, Samsung has improved a lot in this regard over the year, and they differ only in shape.

Multimedia

Galaxy S6 edge and iPhone 6 support a fairly large number of multimedia files out of the box. It is worth noting that if the corresponding format is not in the list, then this can easily be done by installing third-party players. But let's see what test models can do initially.

Apple iPhone 6 can play AAC, MP3 Audible, Apple Lossless, AIFF and WAV audio formats. You can transfer music to the built-in player only through iTunes, which is not always convenient.

The iPhone 6 sounds very good, it has a good volume reserve and the ability to adjust the equalizer.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge supports MP3, M4A, 3GA, AAC, OGG, OGA, WAV, WMA, AMR, AWB, FLAC, MID, MIDI, XMF, MXMF, IMY, RTTTL, RTX and OTA audio formats. Particularly worth highlighting is the support for uncompressed FLAC audio. To transfer files to your smartphone, you can use a USB cable and wireless synchronization.

The sound quality of the S6 edge is also at a good level, and the volume reserve will also please fans of open-back headphones.

As for the volume of the external speaker, both smartphones produce approximately the same sound quality, but the S6 edge still outshines the iPhone 6.

Both smartphones can play video through the built-in player, but have different codec support:

Codec\Name UltraHD4K.mp4 Neudergimie.mkv GranTurismo.mp4 Spartacus.mkv ParallelUniverse.avi

iPhone 6

Galaxy S6 edge

In general, these models do an excellent job of playing music, except for the built-in support for FLAC in the Galaxy S6 edge. But in terms of video, the basic capabilities of the Samsung smartphone are noticeably higher than those of the iPhone 6.

Autonomy and charging

The capacity of the battery built into the iPhone 6 is 1810 mAh versus 2600 mAh in the Galaxy S6 edge. We compared the autonomy of smartphones using the Geekbench 3 test, which discharged them with the displays turned on and set to a medium brightness level.

As a result, the iPhone 6 lasted 3 hours 28 minutes, while the Galaxy S6 edge lasted 7 hours 32 minutes. These tests are also confirmed by real use, in which, in medium load mode, the iPhone 6 can withstand maximum daylight hours, while the Galaxy S6 edge lasts for about a day.

The iPhone 6 charges from 0 to 100% in about 2 hours, and the smartphone has an undocumented fast charging feature. Using a 2.1A charger, iPhone 6 can be charged in 1 hour and 40 minutes.

The Galaxy S6 edge charges in about 1 hour and 30 minutes using the included charger. At the same time, the fast charging function allows you to charge your smartphone from 0 to 15% in 10 minutes; if used sparingly, this can last up to 4 hours. The battery is charged to 80% in 50 minutes. Built-in Samsung Adaptive wireless charging and Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 charges the Galaxy S6 edge in about 3 hours.

As a result, in terms of autonomy, the Galaxy S6 edge shows the best results, which are also complemented by the possibility of fast charging and support for wireless chargers.

final grade

In terms of the sum of points in this comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge deservedly wins, for which it receives the editor's choice “Best Quality”. Samsung managed to significantly increase the functionality of its flagship, while it received a good design and body materials. The remaining six months before the release of the next version of Apple's smartphone, iPhone 6, will be difficult to compete with the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. It will be even more difficult for the new iPhone to do this if it receives only minor improvements compared to the iPhone 6. Samsung was able to raise the quality bar, and although it did not become unattainable, the company made a serious leap in technological terms.

This year, Apple is going to conquer the smartphone market with an updated camera with a resolution of 12 megapixels, 4K video shooting and, most importantly, a display with 3D Touch technology. The technical specifications of the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus look very impressive. Even the appearance that the new products received from their predecessors is fresh and still stands out against the competition.

But the industry does not stand still. Thus, a few months earlier, the famous technology giant from South Korea offered its vision of advanced smartphones for the 2015 model year. The devices turned out to be decent and quite productive. We bring to your attention a detailed comparison of the iPhone 6s and Samsung Galaxy S6.

Design is a very controversial thing. To each his own, as they say, but you can’t do without comparing the appearance of the flagships. Both smartphones look modern and futuristic. The combination of an all-metal body and 2.5D glass covering the front panel of the iPhone 6s is one of the most beautiful on the market. In this regard, Samsung can only oppose Apple to models from the edge line with a side-curved display. Galaxy S6 is clad in a glass and metal body.

The display, through which 99% of interaction with a smartphone is carried out, is, of course, a key component of smartphones. iPhone 6s is equipped with a 4.7-inch Retina HD display with a resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels and a density of 326 ppi. The smartphone has an innovative pressure recognition feature that opens up new ways for the user to interact with the interface. The video below demonstrates how 3D Touch works:

The Samsung Galaxy S6 boasts a “classic” screen, but with a higher Quad HD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels, 577 ppi) and a 5.1-inch diagonal.

Processor and RAM:

An important role in the perception of a mobile device is played by its processing power. Samsung equips its advanced phones with Exynos 7420 single-chip platforms with 8-core processors built on two quad-core processors. One Cortex-A53 cluster operates at 1.5 GHz, the second, more powerful Cortex-A57, at 2.1 GHz. Includes 3 GB of RAM.

Apple uses a new generation A9 64-bit chip in the iPhone 6s, which is supported by an M9 coprocessor and 2 GB of RAM. According to preliminary test results, it is significantly faster than its predecessor A8. The 4.7-inch Apple smartphone released in 2015 shows 2248 points in the “single-core” test, and 4036 in the multi-core test. The modification indicators of the previous generation are 1610 and 2883. The result of the Exynos 7420 in the same benchmark is 1204 points for the “single-core” mode and 4107 – in the mode of using all cores.

The Galaxy S6 has more RAM than the iPhone 6, but better software optimization allows Apple smartphones to use RAM more efficiently.

OS:

The operating systems of the iPhone 6s and Galaxy S6 are as different as they are close to each other. But the devil is in the details, from which the so-called user experience is formed. Galaxy S6 runs on the latest version of Lollipop 5.1 with Samsung's own TouchWiz shell. iPhone 6s is controlled by proprietary iOS 9. The difference between the systems is in philosophy.

Previously, everything was really simple: if you want a watered-down platform created by perfectionists, choose the iPhone. If you need the freedom to choose a device and the ability to fine-tune the system for yourself, look towards Android. But now such stereotypes can be retired. Subjectively, both operating systems are becoming more and more similar to each other. Android is gradually gaining what iPhone and iPad users have always valued in iOS - aesthetics, simplicity and convenience. In turn, iOS is increasing its functionality and customization capabilities.

Both operating systems are subjectively becoming more and more similar to each other. Android is gradually gaining what iPhone and iPad users have always valued in iOS - aesthetics, simplicity and convenience. In turn, iOS is increasing its functionality and customization capabilities.

Battery:

Let's take a break from analytical thoughts and return to the tangible level. While the Galaxy S6 received a 2550 mAh battery, the iPhone 6s is content with a much smaller capacity – 1715 mAh. It would seem that there is a significant difference that puts the South Korean smartphone ahead, but it is not. Apple again comes to the rescue with optimization combined with a lower screen resolution and an economical A9 processor. By the way, the battery in the iPhone 6s has become even weaker than in its predecessor. But the battery life remains the same. 14 hours talk time and 10 days standby time; with LTE turned on, the iPhone will work for 10 hours, and using Wi-Fi will increase the battery life by 1 hour. Samsung is silent about specific numbers.

This part of the device is much more important for many than cores and gigahertz. A good photo module is more likely to provide an advantage to the gadget than a powerful processor. Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6s are equipped with cameras with a resolution of 16 and 12 megapixels. Both can shoot 4K video. To draw conclusions about the superiority of a particular camera, you will have to wait for comparative tests.

The cost of flagship devices is very high, especially in Russian realities. A Korean gadget with 32 GB of flash memory in our country costs 35,990 rubles. For the iPhone 6s, according to rumors, they will ask 51,990 rubles for the minimum version with 16 GB of memory. It will be available in four colors to suit every taste: silver, space grey, gold and rose gold.

If you forget about the price and are guided solely by the combination of characteristics and appearance, both smartphones are a good choice. Samsung, having gotten rid of glossy and cheap plastic, has created a worthy competitor to Apple. Each of the gadgets has both its pros and cons, but adherents of the Apple ecosystem have certainly already made their choice. The rest will have to rely on their own feelings - they definitely won’t let you down.

If we compare the Samsung Galaxy S6 with the iPhone 6, the latter is much inferior in terms of specifications. According to many, such a comparison is not very fair, because by the time the Galaxy S6 was released, the sixth iPhone had been on sale for six months. Well, now we will make a similar comparison of Samsung's flagship with the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, which recently appeared in stores.

Design

Samsung took serious care of the design of its Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, developing an updated design for these models. The front of the smartphones looks very distinctive and familiar, but the shiny metal bezel and glass back instead of the cheap plastic one (which Samsung has always been criticized for) make these phones the most solid looking compared to all other Samsung smartphones.

iPhone 6s looks exactly like the iPhone 6, with its unibody aluminum body and glass front that curves to the edges of the screen. Apple used 7,000-gauge aluminum to make the iPhone 6s' body, making the device stronger and less malleable than its predecessor. A distinctive feature of the iPhone 6s was the new “rose gold” color scheme, which quickly gained popularity.

It's difficult to make a clear choice in favor of the iPhone 6s or Galaxy S6 in terms of design, these are definitely the most beautiful smartphones at the moment.

Design

iPhone 6s comes with a 4.7-inch Retina HD display with a resolution of 1334x740 and 326 PPI. The display supports 3D Touch, which is one of the most important features of the device. 3D Touch brings a whole new level of interaction with iPhone. Along with familiar gestures, iPhone can now recognize how hard you press the screen. The iPhone's glass screen is made using a new dual ion exchange process that replaces sodium ions with potassium ions, making the glass on the iPhone 6s screen the strongest of any smartphone, according to Apple.

The Galaxy 6s has a 5.1-inch Quad HD screen with a resolution of 2560x1440, 577 PPI. Apart from the size, it is difficult to draw any conclusions; we will wait for comments from experts.

Processor and RAM

iPhone 6s is equipped with a new 1.85 GHz A9 processor with a built-in co-processor and 2 GB of RAM.

The Galaxy S6 is equipped with a chip from Samsung, Exynos 7 Octa 7420, developed based on a quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 and a quad-core 2.1 GHz Cortex-A57.

Even though the iPhone only has a dual-core 1.85 GHz processor, it still outperforms the Galaxy S6 in single-core benchmark tests, scoring 2,448 points compared to the Galaxy S6's 1,213 points. The multi-core performance of the iPhone 6s and the Samsung flagship is almost the same.

Single-core performance is probably the most important performance characteristic of a smartphone. The speed of any application depends primarily on this characteristic, while multi-core affects only some applications.

Camera

Both devices have very advanced cameras. The Galaxy S6 comes with a 16-megapixel camera with 4K video support, while the iPhone 6s has a 12-megapixel camera.

The Galaxy S6's camera sensor has a larger aperture, giving it an advantage over the iPhone 6s in low-light situations. The Samsung camera also has optical image stabilization (OIS), which is only available on the iPhone 6s Plus.

Apple smartphones traditionally have very high-quality cameras. One of the reasons to choose an iPhone over an Android device has always been that the former has a better camera. However, in the last couple of years, things have changed, Android OEMs have started to do a better job, and as a result, Android smartphone cameras are now sometimes even superior to their iPhone counterparts.

One of the main features of the iPhone 6s is Live Photos, animated photos, a rather interesting thing. Some people think that it is only needed to increase sales, but people with children very quickly realize the value of this function. If Samsung adds a similar feature to its phones, it won't come as a surprise to anyone.

Battery

Undoubtedly, one of the most important things to consider when choosing a smartphone is its battery life. The Galaxy S6 comes with a 2550 mAh battery, which is much larger than the 1715 mAh battery in the iPhone 6s. But despite Samsung's claims that the Galaxy S6 battery is better than the iPhone 6s battery, reviews of the former are quite negative: some users cannot squeeze more than three hours of active time out of the Galaxy S6.

Price

The Galaxy S6 was originally priced at $672 at launch, but prices have since dropped and the smartphone now costs $576 in its most basic 32GB configuration.

The iPhone 6s costs a little more, with prices starting at $649 for the 16 GB model, but unlike Samsung, Apple is unlikely to lower them in the near future.
Thus, you can buy a Galaxy S6 at a better price and, moreover, with double the hard drive capacity.

Technical Specifications

Below is a more detailed comparison of the two flagships.

Conclusion

Interestingly, Samsung is following in the footsteps of Apple, abandoning such features as a removable battery, microSD slot and water resistance. The company's most devoted fans were not enthusiastic about this step, since these functions were what made Samsung equipment preferable to Apple smartphones.

Pros of iPhone 6s

  • Performance
  • 3D Touch
  • Tight integration of hardware and software
  • Support

Pros of Samsung Galaxy S6

  • Low light photography, OIS
  • Wireless charger
  • Fast charging

The key advantages of the iPhone 6s over the Galaxy S6 are speed, 3D Touch (in my opinion, the most important feature), ease of use due to the competent integration of software, hardware and design, and technical support, which is generally the most underrated aspect in choosing a smartphone. On the other hand, Android is much more flexible and customizable, making it more appealing to tech-savvy buyers.

The Galaxy S6 has a slightly better camera (in low light) and innovative features like wireless charging and fast charging, allowing you to charge the device without a cable and charge up to 50% in 30 minutes and 100% in 100 minutes (iPhone 6s takes 180 minutes) to fully charge).

I hope the review was honest and did not seem directed towards the iPhone 6s, which I personally still prefer. Express your criticism in the comments, if it is constructive, I will be happy to make corrections to the post.

@lock1, Support is completely different. Accordingly, moral aging and real terms of comfortable operation. Apple hardware has had firmware updates and associated software support for at least three years.

PS
I still have the same ancient Applephone 4 in use, competitors from Gnusmas and others have long been in the trash. Accordingly, questions arise: why are Gnusmas products better than good Chinese ones with exactly the same support?

@CodeByte, otherwise they have. Let's ask people how 4s works on the latest firmware? Are there any “ondrome-eating” lags? But, what’s most interesting, how awesome has the functionality of this device expanded, well, compared to the “firmware from birth”, that it has become so “Android-like”?

@stepkin2, Why do people ask? I only have them, not 4s, but even an ordinary four, as I wrote if you haven’t read. ;)
“Android-like” - how and why? :o) I have enough default features even without jail, which is the main thing with a bunch of other things to do – it doesn’t bother my brain. I do some resource-intensive tasks more on the iPad and laptop, perhaps because I’m not so picky about the performance of the smart phone.
Moreover, to debug and optimize something, it’s more convenient for me to torture it on the most resource-limited one, but this is a working moment, not a user one.

@CodeByte, “android-like” is in the context of “android is lame guano, iPhone is incomparable.”

@stepkin2, Well, in three years it didn’t - and this is up to iOS 6. If you put a seven, of course, fours won’t plow so smoothly on it, but it’s already 5 years old - you have to think. :)
Moreover, with the seven, even though apple phones do not work so smoothly, almost all applications can be installed and they will work, maybe not all so quickly, but they will. Other companies don't have anything like this.

@stepkin2, The key point here is the very fact of updating and support during these three years. It is clear that the new ones will be faster and higher. And at the end of its life, the old man will noticeably lag behind, after which he will completely die out, even at Apple. But during these three years it will be updated and all software will work on it.

Well, in general, everything is relative, of course, but optimization, if you don’t mindlessly jump to the new very first version of the axis, in general on iOS is still better, and not only at the level of the axis, but also the application due to the nativeness and limitations of the zoo, too in this regard, they work better on average in all plans. Although Apple, of course, screws up, others just stupidly screw up and scam their users. ;)

@CodeByte, one more time. What's the weirdest feature that appeared in 4s with the update to 8? Well, in order to kill “incomparable smoothness”? And yes, about “Apple screws up too.” Already the 5th update, both the spotlight hangs and freezes. Just like the “most native in the world” safari worked through the ass, that’s how it works, I mean reloading tabs. But, on the other hand, the digital versions of the firmware only click on the road.

@stepkin2, And it also played a role here that 4s and 5 without s are devices that are at the junction of the transition to 64-bit architecture. Licking firmware for devices that are more than 3 years old with such a noticeable difference in architecture is problematic and not logical. Here the desire to force a somewhat more accelerated transition to new devices than usual for completely objective reasons is understandable.

@stepkin2, there have been a lot of changes for 4s over the years, it’s difficult, of course, to remember in which year what appeared, but for me the obvious advantages were:
1) a new, concise interface for most applications, information is better perceived;
2) keychain for storing passwords and auto-filling forms;
3) counteracting theft by blocking the ability to flash the phone;
4) voice messages and the ability to share geolocation;
5) built-in photo editing capabilities (namely editing properties, and not just stupidly adding a filter);
6) iCloud Photo library to organize photos between all devices;
7) Continuity in terms of integration with iPad and Mac via SMS messages and calls;
8) closer integration of applications with each other and with iOS);
9) phone settings control center;
10) convenient management of swipes in mail saves a lot of time
