Review of Motorola Moto Z2 Force - an “unkillable” flagship. Review of the Android smartphone Motorola Moto Z2 Play: modularity in the second generation Moto z2 play mods

As expected, the Moto Z2 Play smartphone was presented today, the successor to the smartphone, which turned out to be unexpectedly successful and managed to achieve good sales around the world.

The new Moto Z2 Play continues the ideas laid down in last year's model, both externally (with the exception of a few minor changes) and internally. Like the first-generation model, the second-generation Moto Z Play is a solid mid-ranger with a 5.5-inch screen and support for MotoMods. But the new model has become thinner and lighter than its predecessor.

More precisely, the thickness has decreased to 5.99 mm, and the weight is now 145 g. Let us recall that for the original model these parameters were 6.99 mm and 165 g, respectively.

In addition, the new Moto Z2 Play has a new processor, more RAM and an improved camera.

We have collected all the technical characteristics of the Moto Z2 Play smartphone in the table below:

Regarding the camera improvements mentioned above. Compared to its predecessor, it received a more light-sensitive lens with a maximum aperture of F/1.7, a Dual Pixel autofocus system, and an improved laser autofocus assistant with more advanced low-light capabilities.

We have known for a long time that the battery capacity will decrease. The manufacturer claims 30 hours of work in mixed mode (Moto Z Play had 50 hours). Fast charging technology should compensate for this - in just 15 minutes the device can be charged enough for eight hours of operation. In addition, there is a new Moto TurboPower Pack module with an additional 3490 mAh battery, which also supports fast charging (15 W) - the battery is charged from 0 to 50% in 20 minutes.

In addition to the Moto TurboPower Pack, other modules were presented. Perhaps the most interesting is the Moto GamePad, which turns your smartphone into a full-fledged handheld console. It has dual control sticks, a D-Pad and four navigation buttons. The additional battery built into the module has a capacity of 1035 mAh.

The updated JBL SoundBoost 2 speaker module can play music continuously for 10 hours and is compatible with the new JBL EQ app. Now it is splash-proof and is available in three colors - red, blue and black.

And finally, Moto Style Shell is a module that supports wireless charging technology (up to 10 W). It is available in several designs and colors.

Note that this year the manufacturer will release at least a dozen more new MotoMods modules. In addition, there are several more smartphones in the manufacturer’s lineup that are awaiting updates.

Moto Z 2 Play runs on pure Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS with Google Assistant virtual assistant. The smartphone is available in colors: Lunar Gray and Fine Gold. The approximate date for the start of sales in Ukraine is August 2017. The Ukrainian price of the device has not yet been announced; for the US market the stated price is $499.

Motorola began updating the Moto Z line of smartphones with the younger model Moto Z2 Play in an all-metal case. Along with the gadget, the company announced new modular accessories Moto Mods, which are attached to the back panel and are compatible with all representatives of the Z-series.

Sophisticated style

As expected, the Moto Z2 Play has a bright 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display. At night, the panel turns into softer colors thanks to the Night Display function. The heart of the smartphone is the eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor. It differs from the Snapdragon 625 SoC in last year’s model with an increased clock frequency of 2.2 GHz. The amount of RAM has increased to 4 GB, built-in memory - 64 GB, expandable with microSD cards. A 3/32 GB version will also be available in some countries. The rear 12-megapixel f/1.7 aperture and dual-color LED flash are equipped with improved laser autofocus with a range of up to 5 meters, which has tripled its sensitivity when shooting in low-light conditions. The 5-megapixel front camera also has its own flash.

The Moto Z2 Play body, with a thickness of almost 6 mm, managed to fit a 3000 mAh battery. The manufacturer promises up to 30 hours of operation, while just 15 minutes of recharging via the USB Type-C port provides up to 8 hours of smartphone operation. This is an excellent result for a thin device, although in terms of autonomy the new product is inferior to its predecessor. The operating system is “pure” Android 7.1.1 Nougat with proprietary Motorola features. The model is available in silver and gold colors. There is a 3.5mm audio jack, and a fingerprint scanner button under the screen can replace the on-screen buttons.

New Moto Mods

Motorola officially unveiled the Moto GamePad gamepad module back at MWC 2017 in Barcelona. The accessory turns your smartphone into a portable gaming console. For control, there are two analog sticks, a D-Pad, four buttons and a pair of triggers, and an additional 1035 mAh battery allows for long gaming sessions.

The updated JBL SoundBoost 2 modular speaker is now splash-proof and available in red, blue and black. The built-in battery provides up to 10 hours of music listening. The Moto TurboPower Pack module with a 3490 mAh battery will provide an additional 50% charge within 20 minutes of connecting to the device. The new generation of Moto Style Shells feature up to 10W wireless charging and are available in a variety of designs.

Price issue

In the US, the price of the Moto Z2 Play will be $500 for the top-end 4/64 GB version. Additional Moto Style Shell panels will cost $40 each, and the battery module, speaker and gamepad have a price tag of $80. Sales of the smartphone will start in the summer, and we will have it in August. Among the competitors of the new product are numerous Chinese flagships, such as OnePlus 3T (which is breathing down its back), but only Motorola produces smartphones with modular accessories.

Motorola introduced the second generation Moto Z Play and new Moto Mods

Since the launch of the Moto ZTM line with Moto ModsTM in 2016, millions of users have discovered smartphone capabilities they never imagined. From a projector module that allows you to broadcast video up to 70 inches diagonally on any vertical surface to a module that transforms your phone into a camera with 10x optical zoom. All this is the Moto Mods platform with unprecedented innovation. The module ecosystem continues to expand its lineup. The next generation of products will allow us to go even further in transforming the capabilities of the smartphone.

Moto Z 2 Play: thinner, lighter, faster

On June 1, 2017, Motorola Mobility introduced the next generation of the Moto Z 2 Play smartphone. It is lighter and thinner, but at the same time even more powerful. The smartphone has an all-metal durable body and a 5.5" Full HD Super AMOLED display, which guarantees extraordinary picture brightness, no matter which side you look at it from. The battery capacity provides up to 30 hours of operation without recharging, and the 8-core processor with a frequency of 2.2 GHz - extreme speed. Plus, thanks to the instant recharging function, you can get up to eight hours of additional use of Moto Z 2 Play in just 15 minutes.

Improvements have also been made to the camera - the laser autofocus of the second generation smartphone has a range of up to 5 meters, and now in low-light conditions, focusing on objects has become three times more sensitive. High-quality selfies are provided by a 5-megapixel front camera with flash and dual color correction.

The Moto Z 2 Play continues the tradition of Moto features. The Night Display function automatically switches the display settings to softer tones at night. Another innovation is Moto Voice, which allows you to instantly unlock your phone, get calendar information, find out about the weather, or automatically launch an application. It is also possible to turn the updated fingerprint scanner into a navigation button: in the smartphone settings, you can disable the on-screen buttons and use only the touch for control.

Moto Z 2 Play runs on pure Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS with Google Assistant virtual assistant. The smartphone is available in colors: Lunar Gray and Fine Gold. The estimated start date for sales in Ukraine is August 2017.

Moto Mods: smartphone superpowers

Moto Mods were created to bring features that are not available in other smartphones. Today Motorola Mobility introduced new modules for Z-series smartphones. The most anticipated among them is the Moto GamePad, which turns the Moto Z into a full-fledged gaming console. Dual control knobs, D-Pad and four navigation buttons for true gamers. The additional battery built into the module has a capacity of 1035 mAh and will allow you to not be interrupted at the most crucial moment of the game.

The updated JBL SoundBoost 2 speaker module can continuously play music in pristine quality for 10 hours and is compatible with the new JBL EQ app. The module is now not afraid of splashes and has three color options - red, blue and black.

One of the most popular modules, despite the capacious built-in batteries of Moto Z-series smartphones, is an additional battery. Moto TurboPower Pack instantly increases battery life at maximum power. Within 20 minutes after connecting the module to the smartphone, the user receives an additional 50% charge.

And finally, Moto Style Shell. Now they, with wireless charging up to 10 W, solve the problem of forgotten wires once and for all. The module is ultra-thin and available in various designs.

Design

The appearance of the Moto Z2 Play, on the front side, is strongly reminiscent of Chinese famous brands, on the other hand, it is the most unusual smartphone due to the design of the antennas, as well as thanks to the replaceable back panels.

The Moto Z2 Play is similar to its predecessor, but its body is a full millimeter thinner and about 30 grams lighter.

Looking at the Moto again, I would like to especially highlight its rear panel. In the middle there is the famous Motorola logo, just above there is a protruding camera lens, and magnets for Moto Mods are installed at the bottom. Everything is balanced and looks decent.

The phone was painted a pleasant moon gray color. This can be called a truly successful decision.

Gorilla Glass 3 is installed on the front. One of the most reliable solutions today, although not the most top-end. During my use of the smartphone, no new scratches appeared, and the oleophobic coating has not yet worn off, considering that the phone has already been used by many reviewers - this is a good indicator. This is not 2.5D glass, but believe me, the phone has not lost anything from this.

There are no unpleasant or depressing moments in the design, except for the volume and lock buttons. Why the company's designers decided to make such microscopic buttons on such a large phone is unclear. Because of this, you constantly confuse the volume and lock buttons.

Otherwise, everything is done as it should: there is USB-C, a headphone input, even a flash was installed near the front camera. Below the screen is the One Button Nav touch button. It feels like it recognizes fingerprints quickly.

Ease of use

For the first time, when I saw the phone in person, I thought: how convenient would it be to use one touch button?

I looked at it with disbelief and used the screen ones for the first couple of days, but then I turned on touch navigation and my understanding of controls changed again. This first happened with the iPhone X, and now it has happened with the Motorola Z2 Play.

It is very convenient to use swipes, you need to get used to them at first, but after some time, the control becomes very comfortable: switching from applications, closing, going back - the sensor responds very quickly, without errors.

Like every other aluminum smartphone, with the exception of the iPhone 7 Jet Black, this phone feels great in the hand. Moto seems impossible to get dirty. Both front and back fingerprints are erased with a bang.

Also, the kit comes with a replaceable black panel; it absorbs all scratches and various dirt and is quite easy to clean.

Screen

Without exaggeration, I can say that screen quality plays the most important role when choosing a smartphone. Moto Z2 play is equipped with a 5.5-inch Super Amoled display with FHD (1920x1080) resolution.

Moto's matrix is not the most advanced, this becomes obvious when used. At angles, color rendition shifts to green and blue. The colors generally look unnatural. Why they didn’t put the matrix $10-20 more expensive remains a mystery to me.

In addition to incorrect color rendering, pixels are striking, which can be seen if you bring the screen closer to your eyes. Yes, you may need to look closely to see the “ladders”, but why don’t Meizu have such a problem, but here they do?

In the screen settings menu, unfortunately, you cannot adjust the warm or cool tint; we are given only two options to choose from: rich or natural color rendering, which resembles the RGB palette.

The brightness reserve is enough in the bright sun, it is comfortable for the eyes in the dark, there is also a night mode, but this has already become a standard feature for phones in 2018, except for Sony, which are still too lazy to add such a mode to their flagships.

Camera

I don’t want to talk about the Moto Z2 Play camera for a long time and admire anything. This is the most ordinary mid-budget mobile camera; it cannot boast of any super features. But, like any other camera, there is still something to be said.

A Sony IMX368 sensor with a maximum resolution of 12 megapixels and an f/1.7 aperture is installed here. Lenovo did not install a dual camera and I think this is more than the right decision. Even with just one camera you can achieve incredibly high-quality images.

Daytime pictures are obtained at a decent level. The picture is moderately saturated and well detailed, even small objects can be distinguished.

In poor lighting, detail and contrast drop sharply, but thanks to the high photosensitivity, the pictures are quite good. Although there is certainly a lot of noise, using the Moto Z2 Play's camera for artistic photography at night will be difficult.

There is an HDR feature that I advise everyone to turn on to achieve a wider dynamic range. There is also laser autofocus, aiming at the subject is fast.

The front camera received a 5 MP module from Omnivision with f/2.2 sensitivity. HDR mode and soft skin effect are also supported. Daytime photos come out well and are suitable for Instagram.

Software

At the time of writing, the Moto Z2 Play was running Android 7.1.1 Nougat-based firmware and the February 2018 security patch. The beta test has already begun, but the final version is still not available, and it is not clear when Russian Moto users can expect it.

But even despite this, there is something to be said about the firmware. It is slightly different from stock Android, although it does not have its own shell like MIUI or Flyme. Of course, I believe that this was the right decision not to reinvent the wheel and create your own shell, but only to add your own software features to bare Android.

Here are two that deserve attention:

Moto Actions.

This feature allows you to choose between on-screen button and touch button gestures. As I wrote above, swipes are much more convenient than on-screen buttons.

You can also choose to turn on the flashlight with a sharp “slash” motion of the phone and a circular motion of the wrist for quick access to the camera. By swiping sharply from the center of the screen, you can reduce the image area to make it more convenient to use with one hand.

And the most important function is analogue, the phone recognizes when your palm approaches the phone and the screen begins to display the time, notifications and charge percentage.

This is a crooked analogue of Siri or Google Now. In fact, I still don’t understand why this function is here, if the phone has a built-in Google Assistant, which performs the same actions, only many times better. If Lenovo hadn't done this, they wouldn't have lost much from it.

Moto Mods

What is it? Mods appeared in the first generation Z series of Moto smartphones. These are specially designed modules that use the magnet on the back of the Moto smartphone to connect, and can significantly expand the functionality of the smartphone.

In addition to additional covers made of wood or any other material, you can buy a modular JBL SoundBoost speaker, a camera module from Hasselblad, an InstaShare projector, a modular Amazon Alexa speaker and various kinds of power banks, thanks to which the phone can work for an honest 4 days.

Our editors received a JBL speaker and a Hasselblad camera. Lenovo also offered us another projector, but unfortunately I had nowhere to test it. Later there will be separate reviews of both the JBL SoundBoost speaker and the Hasselblad camera.

Now I can say that these modules are an extremely successful solution, although they are not a cheap pleasure. The speaker allows you to avoid a separate wireless system (if you are not too picky when it comes to sound), and the camera provides photo capabilities like a good point-and-shoot camera.

Performance and runtime

Moto Z2 Play is powered by the Snapdragon 625 chipset, built on a 14nm process technology and includes 8 cores at up to 2.2 GHz along with Adreno 506 GPU

Even before the review, I thought that the phone would be weak, given the screen resolution, but all my fears were in vain. The smartphone is quite fast and copes with all typical tasks with a bang.

I was also pleased with the RAM, applications stay in it for a long time and because of this, the transition between programs is quick. I would also like to note the built-in memory, which, although it does not reach the UHS-II standard, applications load quite quickly.

The benchmark results are not impressive, but who needs these numbers? There are no problems in games, at least in those that I played, and some serious tasks like photo editing or working with files will run without any problems.

Working hours

Over time, my copy is doing just fine. Even though it has an FHD screen, the phone survives until the end of the day. I always have an Android Wear watch connected, sometimes a wireless speaker, in addition, I have LTE on almost all the time, and my phone is under constant load (social networks, instant messengers, browsing).

With not too intensive use, the Moto Z2 Play can last for two days, and if you purchase an additional module with a battery, the operating time can be more than three days.

Perhaps the Motorola Moto Z2 Play is the most geeky-pregeek smartphone at the moment. If you look at the dry characteristics, then this is a typical middle peasant with a 5.5-inch SuperAMOLED screen and a Snapdragon 626 processor (version 625 overclocked to 200 MHz). The only thing better than others is the thickness of the case - 6 mm versus 7 mm for most analogues.

For film buffs, music lovers and photographers

But the Moto Z2 Play still has its trump card, one might even say a full bag of trump cards. At the bottom of the back cover of the smartphone there is a port for connecting various external modules. The most interesting of them are: the Moto Insta-Share projector ($300), capable of producing an image with a diagonal of 70 inches; Hasselblad True Zoom camera ($300) with 10x optical zoom; JBL SoundBoost audio speaker ($70) and an additional 3500 mAh TurboPower Pack battery. Moto Style Shells made of leather, fabric or wood are also supported. At the same time, compatibility with modules for the first generation Moto Z is maintained, and the number of new modules is gradually growing (gamepad, wireless charging, etc.).

Overpaying for modularity

You can also praise the Moto Z2 Play for its camera with a large Sony IMX362 sensor (1/2.55"), high f/1.7 aperture and Dual Pixel accelerated autofocus technology. Its only drawback is that it protrudes too far from the body to be able to shoot normally with attached modules, the front camera has its own flash. However, if you are only interested in a high-quality camera, then it is cheaper to buy a Moto G5 Plus with a similar sensor. We can only recommend purchasing the Moto Z2 Play if you plan to purchase additional modules and actively use them. .

The Chinese company Lenovo continues to delight consumers with new models of smartphones from the Moto brand (read: Motorola). And sometimes you’re amazed at how different the devices turn out to be. For example, the Moto C Plus model came out as a budget model, and everyone noted the 10 mm thickness of its case. However, Lenovo has shown that they can make very thin smartphones, which is clearly demonstrated by the Motorola Moto Z2 Play Dual XT1710-07 smartphone with a body thickness of only 6 mm. We will talk about it in this review.

Review of the Motorola Moto Z2 Play Dual smartphone. A smartphone is a delicate matter

Introduction

Motorola Moto Z2 Play Dual XT1710-07 turned out to be a truly original smartphone, and this applies not only to its elegant, thin body. In addition to the device, you can purchase Moto Mods modules, which significantly expand the capabilities of the latter.

In particular, a smartphone with a slight movement of the hand turns into a projector, gamepad or professional digital camera with optical zoom.

Appearance

The incredibly thin thickness is immediately noticeable. The frames around the edges are thin, but the 5.5-inch display occupies approximately 70.1% of the front panel, that is, not much, because there is quite a lot of space left above and below the screen. It is used to good effect - for example, above the display there is a front camera, a dual LED flash, a speaker and sensors.

But under the screen there is an oval-shaped multifunctional fingerprint scanner, which we usually see on the back panel of smartphones from other manufacturers.

Three Android touch buttons are displayed directly on the screen. The front panel is entirely covered with protective 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3. There are two color options for the smartphone - Fine Gold and Lunar Gray. We tested the first option.

The back panel has a matte metal surface, so the smartphone does not slip in your hands. The antenna inserts are located in a very innovative way - not at the bottom and top, but along the entire perimeter of the panel.

Another feature is the Moto Mods Connector at the bottom of the back cover. And since the main camera lens also rises above the back panel, it is no coincidence that the Motorola Moto Z2 Play Dual XT1710-07 offers beautiful replacement panels, in addition to modules that expand the capabilities.

On the right side there is a ribbed power button and, also interestingly, two separate keys for adjusting the sound volume (instead of the so-called “rocker”). We also note the fact that the buttons are quite miniature, so it’s not always possible to get to them right away.

The bottom end has not only a modern universal USB Type-C port, but also a classic 3.5 mm audio output, where it is convenient to connect headphones.

If the manufacturer limited itself to only USB Type-C, then many users would have to look for an adapter to use their “outdated” headphones. Let us note in passing that the USB Type-C port supports USB OTG technology, that is, connecting external devices, for example, portable drives.

The top end is no less remarkable, quite the contrary. On it, in addition to the noise reduction microphone, you can see a slot for two SIM cards and a microSD memory card.

However, it is not combined at all! The owner of a smartphone has the right to immediately and simultaneously use two Nano-SIMs (on one side of the retractable sled) and one microSD (on the other side).

Screen

The matrix used is Super AMOLED. It is not a frequent guest in displays; we usually deal with IPS matrices. Therefore, it would be useful to recall that AMOLED is an active matrix of thin-film transistors on organic light-emitting diodes. Super AMOLED integrates touch sensors with a glass panel, thus eliminating the air layer.

The screen diagonal is 5.5 inches. Its resolution is 1080x1920 pixels. Pixel density - 401 ppi. On the front panel, the display occupies approximately 70.1%. Touch control is supported (up to ten touches). The screen is reliably protected by 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3, as mentioned above. Brightness is adjusted automatically and manually.

Software and interface

The operating system is Android 7.1.1. Nougat. There is a proprietary Moto Experiences shell.

However, this interface is very close to the “pure” version of Android, so there is no need to talk about it for a long time.

The user can manage wallpapers and widgets, and among the pre-installed applications there are standard calculator, calendar, camera, translator, tables, maps, presentations, etc.

Hardware and Performance

The manufacturer chose the eight-core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 MSM8953 Pro, produced using a 14 nm process technology, as the chipset. Its ARM Cortex-A53 cores operate at a frequency of 2.2 GHz.

The Qualcomm Adreno 506 video chip is responsible for graphics output. There is a lot of RAM installed - 4 GB of LPDDR3 standard. Built-in memory is 64 GB, but 52 GB will be available to the user. However, the memory is easily expandable by installing a microSD card (HC/XC) with a capacity of up to 256 GB.

The configuration of the smartphone is quite powerful, as evidenced by the tests carried out.

Camera

The main camera has a 12.2 megapixel sensor (pixel size 1.4 µm). It is capable of shooting at a maximum resolution of 4032x3024 pixels. And it records video in 4K UHD resolution (3840x2160 pixels) at 30 frames per second - excellent performance!

The lens aperture is also excellent - f/1.7. Laser and phase detection autofocus, with Dual Pixel technology for faster focusing. Built-in digital stabilization. Double LED lighting. Zoom is digital only. There is an HDR mode. The software is able to recognize a face and a smile in a frame. The “Professional” mode allows you to “play” with the values of white balance, shutter speed, light sensitivity (up to ISO 3200), manual focus and exposure compensation scale.

The front camera of the smartphone is 5 megapixel (pixel size 1.4 µm), with a wide-angle lens so that a group of people can fit into the frame, not just one person. It takes photos in a maximum resolution of 2592x1944 pixels, and records video in a maximum resolution of Full HD (1920x1080 pixels). It also comes with dual LED flash and fixed focus. Its aperture value is f/2.2. In general, an ideal camera for selfies, including group ones.

Battery

The battery in the smartphone is lithium-ion and non-removable. Its capacity is 3000 mAh. At an average load level, the smartphone can last almost a whole day on a fully charged battery - this is a decent indicator for such a thin device.

But if the battery runs out at the wrong time, it doesn’t matter, because the device supports Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology. In just half an hour, the smartphone is able to restore its battery charge by 50%. By the way, there is a battery module with a capacity of 3490 mAh.

Communications

The smartphone supports 2G, 3G and 4G cellular networks, including LTE Cat.13 with a maximum download speed of up to 300 Mbit/s, and LTE Cat.7 with a maximum transfer speed of up to 150 Mbit/s. There is only one radio module, so SIM cards operate in Dual SIM Dual Standby mode. But both cards are in active standby mode in 3G/4G networks simultaneously. It is proposed to access the Internet using a dual-band Wi-Fi module (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). To exchange files, you can use the Bluetooth 4.2 module. Organization of a wireless point is available. There is even NFC with support for Mifare Classic contactless smart cards to pay for transport services.

Such cards are very common in Russian megacities. The USB Type-C port supports connecting external drives, gamepads and other devices (USB OTG technology). The navigation module extremely quickly searches for satellites both in the GPS system and in the domestic GLONASS system. Geotagging is supported - leaving the geographic GPS coordinates of the point where the photo was taken.

Total

The Motorola Moto Z2 Play Dual XT1710-07 smartphone is capable of surprising even seasoned users. Among the host of twin devices, this model stands out not only for its very thin body, but also for its simultaneous support for two SIM cards and a microSD memory card in one retractable slot, its water-repellent nano-coating and, of course, support for a variety of modules. The latter are capable of turning a smartphone into a gamepad, projector, professional digital camera with optical zoom, etc.
