How to improve computer performance for gaming. How to increase computer performance for minimal money

Hello, friends!

Today I will tell you how to increase the performance (speed up) of a computer using the example of some settings (optimization) of the Windows 7 operating system. I have been working on my computer for four years now, and by today’s standards it is certainly outdated. Therefore, you have to deal with various Windows settings, disabling unnecessary components of this operating system.

In this article I will talk about the basic actions that will significantly speed up the operation of a computer running Windows 7. I will also say a few words about a wonderful utility called “TuneUp Utilities,” which I have been using for several years now, and which significantly optimizes the operation of the Windows 7 operating system and speeds up your computer.

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that it is not necessary to perform all the steps presented below. Some settings may not be suitable for your daily tasks, and stopping some services may cause various problems. Therefore, before you disable and configure anything, make sure that this action will not entail any restrictions.

However, disabling just a few unnecessary features, or changing some settings, can help you significantly speed up the boot and operation of Windows 7.

I also draw your attention to the fact that noticeable improvements in the speed of Windows 7 will only be clearly visible if you use “outdated” computers. If you have a new computer with great specifications, then you most likely will not experience a big increase in performance.

We increase the performance (speed up) of the computer. Optimizing boot and speed of Windows 7

1. The very first and IMPORTANT advice will be an event related to cleaning the operating system from various garbage

Before you perform the steps below, Windows optimization and speed up your computer, remove all unnecessary programs (especially games) and files. Clear your desktop of shortcuts, files and folders, leaving only the essentials. The fact is that having a large number of any objects on the desktop is highly undesirable, since they consume a lot of system resources.

An ideal Windows operating system desktop should look something like this:

To remove unnecessary software and games, I recommend that you use some utility, for example, which I will talk about below. If you are not familiar with this program, be sure to read this article. TuneUp Utilities will help you not only correctly remove unnecessary software, but also clean the system of other junk, optimize Windows performance and speed up your computer.

Every time you turn on the computer, certain programs autoload, which are very often not needed there. For example, some programs add a module that monitors new updates and, when they appear, prompts us to download the updates.

We don’t always need this, and if you decide to speed up your computer, you need to remove the launch of such applications from startup.

To get to the program startup menu, click “Start” - “Run”.

In the window that appears, type “msconfig” in the line and click the “Ok” button. After this, the “System Configuration” window will appear, which has a “Startup” tab.

If you do not have the “Run” item in the “Start” menu, then right-click on the Windows taskbar and select “Properties” in the context menu. In the window that appears, in the “Start Menu” tab, click the “Customize” button. In the window that opens, find the “Run command” item and tick it, then apply the changes.

After you get to the program startup menu, uncheck the boxes next to unnecessary applications, and then apply the changes.

Some changes may require you to restart your computer for them to take effect.

I would like to note that you must leave the operating system, drivers and antivirus in startup; all other programs can be removed, but this is at your discretion.

After removing unnecessary programs from startup, the system will boot faster, in some cases the Windows boot speed will increase significantly.

3. Disabling unnecessary Windows services

One of the most effective ways to speed up your computer is to disable unused (unnecessary) operating system services. Windows OS has a huge number of services enabled by default, the operation of which requires a large amount of system resources. Many of them can be disabled without losing functionality or reducing system security. For example, if your computer does not have a printer, you can disable the corresponding services responsible for its operation. After all, we don't need them! Is not it?

This event can significantly increase the performance of your OS! Be sure to pay attention to this.
To disable services, you can use the following method.

Launch all the applications that you use in your daily work, go to the “Services” tab (it is located in the “System Configuration” menu, next to the “Startup” tab, which I wrote about just above), find in the list the services that have "Status" has the status "Stopped".

Then turn them off. Just be careful, some services may be necessary.

What services can be disabled to optimize Windows 7?

WWAN auto setup– if you do not have CDMA or GSM modules, this service can be safely disabled
Adaptive brightness adjustment - this service adjusts the screen brightness if there is a light sensor; if there is no such sensor, disable it.

Windows Firewall– designed to protect your computer. It is recommended to use third-party applications for these purposes (for example, Comodo, KIS, DrWEB, etc.).

Windows Defender– disable it, a completely unnecessary service!

Program Compatibility Assistant Service– this service can be disabled, only in case of incompatibility of programs you will need to manually set the parameters, which does not happen very often.

WinHTTP Web Proxy Automatic Discovery Service– can be turned off.

Diagnostic Policy Service- practically not needed.

Smart card– if you do not use such cards, then disable them.

Remote Registry– Be sure to turn it off for security reasons.

Security Center– reminds you of various events such as lack of antivirus, outdated updates, etc. – turn it off if you don’t want to see them.

The list, of course, was not particularly comprehensive; in fact, there are many more services that can be disabled. I would be grateful if you add to this list in the comments to this article.

In addition, among the standard services there will be additional services of third-party programs, which are installed on your PC, they can also be disabled.

4. Increase the swap file

The paging file is a space on your computer's hard drive where the system copies files that do not fit in RAM. The system accesses the swap file to quickly load data and constantly uses it. If this space is too small, the computer will slow down.

In order to increase the size of the paging file, go to the “Start” menu and click “Control Panel”, the view of which is best switched to “Small icons”.

Then select: System - Advanced system settings. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Options. In the "Performance Options" window that appears, in the "Advanced" tab, click the "Change..." button. The “Virtual Memory” window will appear, in which uncheck the “Automatically select paging file size” checkbox and specify the size manually for each disk (if there are several of them in the system).

It is advisable to indicate the same minimum and maximum sizes. It is advisable to choose a paging file size that is 2-4 times larger than the amount of RAM installed on the computer.

5. Changing visual effects

Windows 7 has an Aero interface, which consumes a significant amount of computer resources and, in some cases, slows it down.

By disabling Aero and other visual effects, you can achieve some improvement in computer performance.
Visual effects can be disabled in the “Performance Options” window, which I wrote about in the previous paragraph, in the “Visual Effects” tab.

There are three settings options here:

- provide the best view;

— ensure the best performance;

— special effects (completely manual settings).

Adjust these settings to your liking and apply the changes you make.

6. Disable indexing of hard drives

To do this, go to “My Computer” and select any hard drive. Right-click and click “Properties” in the menu that appears.

After this, a window will open in which you uncheck the “Allow the contents of files on this drive to be indexed in addition to file properties” and apply the changes.

7. Use ReadyBoost Technology

ReadyBoost technology, included in Windows 7, is designed to speed up your computer. As I noted above, if there is not enough RAM, the system uses the paging file, which is located on the hard disk (HDD). HDDs are mechanical, slow devices, ReadyBoost allows you to use USB flash drives or memory cards to store such temporary data.
To activate the above technology, connect a USB flash drive or memory card, go to the “Properties” menu of this device. In the “ReadyBoost” tab, set the required amount of memory and apply the changes.

All these simple measures will help you significantly optimize Windows and speed up your computer.

Here are a few more tips that will help you keep your computer in excellent condition, thanks to which it will work quickly, for a long time and will not let you down.

How to care for your computer?

1. Defragment your disk regularly. Over time, files on a computer's hard drive become fragmented (in simple words, they are written randomly across the surface of the disk), which reduces the speed of data retrieval.

The standard defragmenter is located among the utility programs (Start - Programs - Utilities - Disk Defragmenter). I recommend using this tool from time to time.

2. Occasionally clean your disks of accumulated unnecessary information. The standard Disk Cleanup program is also located in the Utilities section.

3. Clean the registry regularly. When you delete various files and applications, various garbage can accumulate in the Windows system registry, which reduces system performance. To clean the registry, you can use third-party software, for example, CCleaner (you can download it).

4. Once every six months, clean the internal elements of the system blog from accumulated dust.

This is especially true before the summer heat. If you do not clean your computer from dust, its elements will significantly overheat, which can lead to the computer freezing and even breaking its devices.

5. Use a high-quality antivirus program for your computer, for example.

In conclusion of this post, I want to say a few words about a cool program designed to increase the performance (acceleration) of a computer and keep it in excellent condition.

A program that I have been using for several years. It allows you to find problems in your computer and fix them. Everything that I wrote in this article about increasing computer performance is implemented in TuneUp Utilities.

This program is updated annually and today is called TuneUp Utilities 2012.

Here are its main functions:

- increasing computer performance;

— optimization of Internet connection;

— deleting programs;

- Disk Defragmenter;

— complete setup of the Windows operating system;

— cleaning and defragmenting the system registry;

— recovery of deleted files;

— customizing the appearance of the operating system;

— deleting files without the possibility of their recovery;

— setting hidden parameters of Windows OS and much more.

The functionality of TuneUp Utilities is very rich in various features!

If you have not yet tried TuneUp Utilities, I recommend that you install this program and start using it, and then the performance (speed) of your system will always be at its best.

Unfortunately, this software is not free, but finding the program on the Internet is not a problem.

If you don’t know where to download programs, then I recommend that you read my article “”. You can find a lot of useful things on torrent trackers.

How to optimize your computer?

Very easy and simple! This guide will help you set up and optimize your computer, clean your computer from various junk, remove viruses and reliably protect your PC, speed up the operation and loading of Windows, get rid of errors and freezes, and much more...

That's all for me. I hope my post was useful to you. Love your computer, take care of it, optimize Windows performance and then he will delight you with impeccable and fast work.

    Useful article, I didn’t know a lot, thank you :) Alexander, can you explain point 6 in more detail, why is this being done?

    Nice recipes!

    You can also use special programs, for example Auslogics Boot Speed - in it all these parameters are clearly organized into sections and configured in a few clicks without going into the internals of the system

    Both TuneUp Utilities and Auslogics Boot Speed - this software is not free. And not cheap! TuneUp Utilities for 3 computers costs $65. Both programs cost about the same.

    Well, there is also a FREE program like these: Advanced Sistem Care 7. I used it myself. She helped me personally)

    The 2010 version of the program costs 50 euros, Sanya, how much does 2012 cost?

    I use Auslogics BoostSpeed, I must say that TuneUp Utilities is quite good, I used the magazine version for a while without updating the program itself - everything suited me, then I started experimenting, tried other products 😀 ...

    Thank you Sasha, the post is interesting - and for Kasperych I advise you to install Emsisoft Anti-Malware in addition.

    There is another similar program called CCleaner. But TuneUp Utilities, according to your recommendation, looks even more functional, I’ll definitely use it on my XP system. And damn it, it’s time for me to get a new computer 😀

    Doesn't Casper slow down your computer? I once tried to stage it, it was terrible. Now Doctor Web - I don’t notice it at all

    As it were, Windows performs indexing in order to know where which file is located. Absolute analogy with search engines. Only if you disable indexing, the system will take longer to search for the file, since it will go through all the files. And if you turn it on, then Windows will periodically go through the system and “index” files... In principle, it does not create a special load, but maybe for me, I often use the search, since there are thousands of thousands of files on my computer that are always needed.. .

    Although, they say that the first step in speeding up Windows is to disable search indexing... And often this is enough. 🙂

    Thanks for the article - lately the laptop has started to slow down a lot

    Victor Bochenkov, I also use the CCleaner program.

    Alexander, thanks for the extensive post.

    Svetlana, I can advise you to defragment your laptop. Only with the built-in tool. If you haven't done it yet, you'll be pleased with the results.

    Volodya, what do you mean by built-in tool? I know. that defragmentation greatly speeds up the work of any computer, but I don’t have room for a regular built-in one. My daughter recently just reinstalled Windows on her laptop - it also helps a lot.

    By the way, they asked about Kaspersky - as a regular user, I can say it doesn’t slow down - it was a very long time ago when it slowed down

    Cool. But it's a pity for the PS only. I'm thinking about buying myself a mac. 😈

    Victor, Siklisha lags behind the program described above in many ways, CCleaner is a janitor (cleaning lady).

    Alexander (AKart), if you install Kaspersky, then it’s better than 2010, the 2011 version took a long time to be finalized and now, to put it mildly, they don’t like it :)

    Good, informative and voluminous article! Thanks for the recommendations - I'll definitely use them. Actually, lately I’ve been blocking something on my computer... I need to fix it 🙄

    Today my desktop computer's power supply burned out (I HOPE it was the power supply and not the entire computer), today I switched to a netbook...oooh, horror!!! I will optimize according to the article. Although I know all this, I can still miss something. and here everything is before your eyes!

    Alexander, another question: If the processor or mother burns out, would the computer react somehow when turned on? Now when I press the on button, I have zero emotions at all, which is why I blame the power supply...

    Alexander Bobrin

    ValeronVoronin I think that if the mother burns, there will be no signs of life. My blog was on fire, you press the power button - silence. One day my mother purchased a defective one, the computer turned on (the fans were running and the diode was glowing), but there was nothing on the screen and no sounds. And so, if one of the devices does not work, then there should be sounds. Most likely you have a nutrition blog, but I don’t exclude your mother as well - write back later.

    I have a license at work, but I haven’t gotten it to work at home yet, so I download the keys from the website. And so he is not broken. There are simply broken versions, and there may be problems with them. But if you just download the keys to the license, then everything will be fine.

    Yeah, tomorrow I’ll go to the store with the block, maybe they’ll check it so I don’t waste my money empty, then I’ll write. It’s also a pity to spend money on an antivirus software, but when I make money on the Internet, then I’ll buy it.

    I don’t understand, on what website do you download the license keys? There you download the demo version for 30 days and that’s it, then it doesn’t seem to be updated? Or am I doing something stupid?

    Sasha, sometimes kay lasts for months, sometimes not even a day goes by before it is cut off. It is best to download the archive of keys, there are about a thousand of them. 🙂

    I've been using the license for a long time - no problems

    I downloaded TuneUp Utilities 2012 in order to delete a folder (empty), which is restored every time after deletion after the system boots. I tried to remove it using the specified utility several times in different ways. It still recovers after a reboot. 🙁

    INSTALL Unlocker 1.9 TO DELETE SUCH FOLDERS.

    100% Unlocker 1.9 will not help. The same thing will happen as with TuneUp Utilities. This is probably a virus that fakes a system folder, and Windows restores it.

    Alexander, please help me, now my games won’t start, what should I do, thanks in advance.

    I don’t entirely agree with: “For example, if your computer does not have a printer, you can disable the corresponding services responsible for its operation. After all, we don't need them! Is not it?" The fact is that a printer may appear, and a virtual printer - I sometimes use it. Also the rest of the services, for example, I turned off everything that I don’t use now, and in half a year I’ll buy and install something, but it will refuse to work and I don’t remember that I ever turned off any services (try to find what else needs to be turned on) . It seems to me that the game is not worth the candle, which applies to services, in standby mode they consume very little memory and about zero processor resources, I dabbled with this - zero effect.

    I not only disagree with point 4, it’s complete nonsense. Firstly, Windows by default has a virtual memory value of quite a decent size, and only once in ten years of working on a PC was this value not enough, but even then Windows simply suggests increasing the amount of memory and that’s all. Moreover, I suggest you conduct an experiment - disable virtual memory altogether; for me and my sister personally, this doubled the speed of the entire system. I started copying a movie from an old 80GB IDE disk at a speed of 70-30Mbits. Sata2 is a little higher. Just think about what virtual memory is and it will become clear to you that this is the worst evil from Microsoft. If you are interested in this topic, I can explain to you in more detail why.

    I did everything point by point, I thought it would fly. Stupid as he was stupid ((

    Please tell me, if I purchase a license for the tune up program, how many computers can I install it on?

    I installed an agt3-25sat-64g solid-state hard drive, the system with a bunch of programs loads in 10 seconds. Installing windows 7 on the computer took 8 minutes. If you want your computer to work quickly, buy a 64 gig solid-state hard drive, install windu 7 on it and you will understand what speed is. Before switching to these drives, read reviews on the Internet; drives are now not expensive, less than 2 thousand; they are connected with a cable.

    Thank you very much it helped a lot.

    Excellent article, it mentions both autoloading and unnecessary services. If you don’t invest in hardware, then everything you need is indicated, and if you have a budget, I recommend buying an SSD; download speeds will increase significantly.

    Not bad! And everything is clear! But it’s only written for W7... no... it will be easier in XP... but still a useful article! If possible, I’ll post it on my website with a link to you!?

    Interesting tips, I will need to increase my computer performance, I have Windows 7 Cokras, I will do everything like you.

    I think that in order to avoid various problems, for example, slow computer speed, you need to initially buy (and not spare money on it) a computer with good performance. A stingy man pays twice, that's how it is.

    You don't need to buy an expensive one to have a productive computer. These are store myths. Previously, all programs worked normally on the Pentium 120.

    I understand that now the demands on programs have become greater. But for office work you don't need a gaming PC with a $200 video card.

    The main thing is at least 4GB of RAM, and spend less time on the Internet so as not to pick up viruses.

    I was pleased with the fan; it hasn’t been cleaned for three years, no less.

    Yes, cool, everything a programmer needs is practical and to the point.

    Very good article.

    The only thing I wouldn’t recommend is cleaning the radiator every six months.

    This operation is very painful for the computer and any careless movement

    may damage the processor. And it costs the most in the system unit.

    Indexing by the way loads the CPU by 30 percent when it starts

    and this service starts even when you are not searching on the computer.

    Considering that the processor is 100 percent, disabling indexing will greatly affect performance.

    8 minutes is a lot, just catastrophically long for a computer.

    My computer boots in half a minute.

    thanks good advice helped

    useful article, especially for noobs like me))) thanks to the Author

    I wish I had read these tips earlier. Due to the fact that I did not know how to properly care for a computer, especially that it needs to be cleaned every six months, my laptop burned out after 3 years...

    To make the computer work quickly, I just turned off autostart and disabled several services, the computer works fine. The main thing is not to clutter your computer with a large number of programs.

    I downloaded TuneUp Utilities 2012 in order to delete a folder (empty), which is restored every time after deletion after the system boots. I tried to remove it using the specified utility several times in different ways. It still recovers after a reboot.

    I did as you advised, but after a while the 0.5 GB removable disk stopped showing up when connected. Tell me what can be done? I'll keep an eye on the comments. Thank you.

    Disabling unnecessary services in Windows requires a certain level of literacy, which the vast majority do not have. Moreover, this is an unsafe activity. I get out of this situation by taking screenshots of all services, like they are in your photo. This results in several screenshots. Then I disable some services that seem unnecessary to me and also take screenshots. In case of failure, I connect the services one by one, focusing on the screenshots.

    In your mind, if you really need performance, then first you need to choose an OS. Windows itself is a braking system, no matter how you speed it up. For scientific calculations, Windows is not used anywhere: the ISS uses Linux. The best solution would be to install two operating systems on a computer to solve different problems.

    Great guide! Really helped))) Thanks Friend

    This article helped a lot!

    Thanks a lot...

    Very useful article, thank you very much.

    I used your program, but it also has a minus - it also eats up productivity since it is constantly running. There is an alternative to Win.Tools.net

    It cleans better, removes programs, startup and much more. After it, the computer flies. Best regards, Alexander

    I haven't visited your blog for a long time. At one time, a couple of tips helped solve several problems, in particular, the HDD infection worked slowly, although time passes and most people change it to a fast SSD drive; they have now become more accessible))

    I myself am the owner of a laptop, a useful thing in the household, but if you decide to do complex calculations, video editing or image rendering, modeling in Cinema 4D without a good video card is a lost cause. Personally, I bought mine in the summer of 2013, right at the height of the discounts, bought an MSI CX70 ONF-230RU, and in 2016 I decided to upgrade it, a crazy idea came to me, but it burned out. I assembled an MSI CX70 + GTX 1060 for myself and I will say that it became more comfortable to work in the above applications, and then I bought a high-quality 27" QHD monitor and the whole process began to sparkle with new colors. True, there are limitations, as you know in PC motherboards there is a slot for an x16 video card and I connected via x1. The data flow rate is greatly reduced, but even though there is enough to see, I didn’t believe for a long time that it would work. In a word, it turned out to be such a budget PC assembly from a laptop)))

Instructions

If the cooling system is efficient enough, you can proceed to overclocking. To do this, go to the BIOS (press the DEL, F2 or F1 key during boot, depending on the board model). Find the characteristics tab. It can be called differently, you can read exactly what it is in the instructions for it.

The simplest is the processor by raising the system bus frequency. In the BIOS, this characteristic is usually called CPU Clock or CPU Frequency. Overclocking is carried out by raising this characteristic.

The final processor frequency is the result of multiplying the bus frequency by the so-called processor multiplier. Accordingly, you can overclock the processor simply by increasing the multiplier. However, in most modern processors it is blocked. The exceptions are AMD's Black series processors and Intel's Extreme series processors, in which the multiplier value can be changed.

note

The operation of increasing processor performance beyond that stated by the manufacturer is called “overclocking.” This should be done with caution, since overclocking the processor leads to increased heat generation and increased load on many computer systems. Before you start overclocking, make sure that the cooling fans are working properly and providing the required level of cooling. If the processor temperature in normal mode exceeds 50 degrees, overclocking it without upgrading the cooling system is contraindicated.

In most cases, you should not increase the processor frequency by more than 20 percent of the nominal frequency.

Increasing the speed of your computer is called overclocking. Overclocking is not as complicated a process as it might seem at first glance. Practice and some experience in the form of a damaged processor invariably confirm this.

Instructions

Today is a fairly simple task. To do this, you need to increase the frequency at which (). There are a large number of programs with which you can “” the processor directly from Windows. For example, Softfsb. Download this program (distribution is free). Launch it. This program will open. Specify the frequency to which you want to “overclock” the processor and press “Y”. Then the program will do everything automatically. No reboot required.

The best option is to overclock the CPU from the BIOS. Go to the BIOS, find the option that controls the memory frequency. If you do not know the exact location, check this in the instructions. Once you have found this option, set the minimum value. Next, find the parameter called AGP/PCI Clock and set the value to 66/33 MHz. Now you need to find the Frequency/Voltage Control parameter. This parameter will be responsible for increasing performance processor. There is no specific value by which to increase the value. It all depends on the characteristics of your personal computer. To start, increase the frequency by 10 MHz. In most cases this should work. Save the changed settings and boot into Windows. Now you need to make sure that the speed of your computer has increased. To do this, download the program CPU-Z. Check the stability of the processor using Super PI or Prime95. Also monitor the processor temperature, it should not rise above 60 degrees, but the lower the temperature, the better.

If everything was successful, then repeat the steps taken and increase the speed of your computer by another 10 MHz. Continue this until the system is stable.

Most PC users, faced with freezes and slow system performance, have more than once thought about improving the performance of their processor. The solution to the problem is overclocking - increasing the speed of the computer by overclocking the processor.

You will need

  • - computer;
  • - program for testing the system;

Instructions

Overclocking is not as complicated a process as it might seem at first glance. All actions are carried out using Bios. Your task is to increase the frequency at which your processor operates. To do this, restart your computer. When you turn it on, press the Del key and the Bios window will open. Depending on the Bios version (for example, Phoenix Bios), launch can also be done using the F1, F2, F10 or Esc keys. Go to Power Bios Setup. Reduce the memory frequency by setting the Memory Frequency to the minimum value. This action is necessary to reduce the limit level.

After this, open the Advanced Chipset Features menu, select HyperTransport Frequency (this parameter may also be called LDT Frequency or HT Frequency). Reduce the frequency to 600 or 400 MHz.
Save the settings and restart your computer by clicking the Save changes and exit button. After the reboot, enter Bios again. Open the Power Bios Setup menu, in the new window select CPU Frequency. Select the item called CPU Host Frequency. Depending on the Bios version, this menu may have a different name; for clarification, read the motherboard instruction manual.

Increase the value to 250 MHz, save the Bios settings and boot the operating system. After turning it on, check its stability and performance. If you are not satisfied with the result, increase the CPU Host Frequency value a few more points. Repeat this action until you achieve the desired result. Do this carefully, too high a value may damage the motherboard. Check system stability after each upgrade. To check the operating system after overclocking, you can use special programs (for example, Everest, HWiNFO32 or Free PC Audit).

note

When overclocking, it is extremely undesirable to heat the processor above 60 degrees.

  • how to improve computer performance

To increase the power of your computer, you need to perform a number of operations. Considering the fact that you will need to change the parameters of the processor and RAM, you need to act very carefully.

You will need

  • - Screwdriver;
  • - tweezers.

Instructions

Now find the item responsible for the state of RAM. Reduce the frequency of the bus through which information is supplied to the RAM to the minimum value. This will prevent the bus frequency from increasing during overclocking.

Now open the menu responsible for configuring the CPU parameters. Increase the frequency by 10-20 Hz. If the bus frequency has already reached the maximum level, then increase the processor multiplier by one.

Save the settings for these items and restart the computer by clicking the Save & Exit button. If after the overclocking procedure the computer stops booting, repeat the procedure for entering the BIOS menu.

Repeat the reverse operations to those described in the second and third steps. Those. increase the RAM bus frequency and reduce the processor frequency.

If you are not sure about the correctness of the entered settings, then find the Use Default Settings item or its equivalent, highlight it and press the Enter key. This will reset the BIOS menu settings to factory defaults.

If, after overclocking the computer, it stops loading at all, i.e. If you can't even enter the BIOS menu, then manually reset your computer. Turn it off and open the system unit.

Locate the BIOS battery located on the motherboard. Remove it from the socket using tweezers or a screwdriver. Use these tools to close the contacts to which the battery was adjacent. Place it back into the slot and turn on the computer. Install the CPU-Z program and make sure that your processor is stable.

The process of increasing the performance of a central processor is called overclocking. It is usually used when working with relatively old processors, because their modern analogs already have a high speed of processing and transmitting information.

You will need

  • - Clock Gen;
  • - Core Center.

Instructions

It is important to understand that the process of overclocking a central processor can damage the device. Only do it if there is really a need for it. Install the Clock Gen program or any equivalent that allows you to perform a CPU stability test. If this device already has problems with its operation, then it is better to refuse to artificially increase its performance.

To optimize CPU performance, use the BIOS menu functions. You should not overclock the CPU using programs running in Windows. Firstly, changes to CPU parameters will occur only after the operating system is started, and secondly, not all such utilities are equipped with a high-quality protection system. Open the BIOS menu after restarting your computer.

Go to the Advanced Chipset Configurations or Advanced Setup menu. The name of the menu depends on the motherboard model. Choose how to increase CPU performance: changing the bus frequency or multiplier. It is better to use the first option, because it allows you to fine-tune the processor parameters.

Today we will look at a hot topic - how to increase PC speed. How can a computer drive any person crazy at the moment of an incomprehensible freezing or slowdown? It would seem that nothing significant is running, but the computer begins to think and think. And then all sorts of thoughts arise: “after all, I don’t do anything like that, where do such brakes come from?” It can also happen when the computer freezes even in browsers, or in office applications that have never loaded the computer.

So, let’s move on to ways that will help you increase your computer’s performance.

1. Replacement of components
One of the easiest ways is to replace parts of your computer. First, you need to figure out which part or group of parts (components) should be replaced to obtain maximum PC performance.

1.1. CPU You need to change it if the frequency of the new one is 30 percent higher. Otherwise, you will not experience a significant increase in productivity. There are people like extreme sports enthusiasts who try to overclock their processor. This method, of course, is not suitable for everyone, but, nevertheless, by doing it, the frequency can be increased, thereby increasing the performance and speed of the computer. Overclocking is possible if the motherboard and processor have overclocking potential. However, it must be remembered that a part that is overclocked will last less than it would in its normal state. In general, the topic of overclocking is very broad, and we will dwell on this for now.

1.2. HDD, or also called a hard drive. Here we focus on the speed of hard drives, not their capacity. If you have a hard drive from an economical series with a low spindle speed of about 5400 rps, then it would be advisable to replace it with a hard drive with a speed of 7200 rps. Such a replacement will definitely increase the performance of your computer. You can also replace your hard drive with an SSD drive, believe me, the speed will increase tenfold.

1.3. RAM. When almost all of the RAM is loaded while working at the computer, it definitely needs to be added or replaced. The RAM load can be seen in the Task Manager; if the memory is approximately 80% full, then I recommend increasing it by 50-100%.

1.4. Video card. Here I think everything is clear. If you choose for games, then I advise you to find a powerful video card, not forgetting about compatibility with the central processor.

Which part is exactly pulling your computer down can be seen in the system configuration. In Windows 7, this is done like this: go to Start - Control Panel - System, find “Measure performance” and click. The overall performance of your computer is determined by the smallest indicator, thanks to which you can determine the weak part of the computer. For example, if the evaluation of the processor differs significantly from the evaluation of the hard drive and RAM, then you need to think about replacing such a part with a newer one, and therefore more productive.

2. Computer cleaning, repair

The computer may freeze and slow down due to some kind of malfunction. Naturally, routine repairs can help increase the performance of your computer. For example, poor cooling of critical PC parts will lead to a drop in the performance of the entire computer. In this case, thoroughly clean the entire system unit from dust and other things.

3. Defragmentation

If you haven’t done defragmentation for a long time, then you definitely need to do it, because it greatly affects the performance of the computer and the boot speed of the system. During defragmentation, all scattered fragments of various files on the disk are collected into one whole, thereby reducing the strain on the read head in the hard disk. After you do defragmentation, performance will increase to some extent. By the way, to carry out defragmentation you need to have about 30% of free space on your local disk. Also, do not forget to monitor your system disk: if there is less than 1 GB of free space left on it, then do not wonder why your computer is slowing down so much. Do not save large files (movies, games, etc.) to the desktop, as this will clog up the C: drive.

4. Viruses

Viruses can also affect system performance, and this is a fact. They can slow down your PC, or even stop it altogether. If your computer spontaneously takes a significant amount of time to boot, then you must first scan it with antiviruses or scanners, for example DrWeb CureIt!. However, of course, it is better to initially have a good antivirus, for example Nod 32 or DrWeb. We scanned the system, found the virus and removed it!

5. Use of special optimizer programs

Using programs designed to optimize the operating system, you can significantly increase system performance. There are a lot of programs, however, having tried many optimizers, I would recommend AeroTweak, PCMedic, Auslogics BoostSpeed or Ccleaner. All these programs are functional and effective, which is the most important thing in our case.
I also want to note that almost all of these software have the function of disabling certain programs during loading. So, it is better to remove programs that you practically do not use from startup for faster operation of your PC.

Remember, before each dubious manipulation, be sure to create a system restore point. How to do this is written.

In Windows 7, you can also increase performance on your own by changing the graphical interface. Go to Start - Control Panel - System - Advanced - Settings. Here we find “Ensure the best performance” and select.

6. Selecting an operating system

Do you really like Windows XP? However, I can say one thing - it’s time to switch to seven, believe me, it’s worth it. If, of course, your computer settings allow it. If you have 2 Gigabytes of RAM, then don’t hesitate to change the operating system to Windows 7. If the RAM is 4 GB or more, then install Windows 7 64-bit version. In this case, the system speed will increase, provided that you work in 64-bit programs.

I do not recommend using various Windows builds for your computer, such as Beast or different Pandas. They are loaded with tons of unnecessary programs, which, as time-tested, glitch and freeze, as a result of which PC performance drops.

7. Reinstalling Windows XP/7

Reinstalling the operating system is like a drastic decision. After reinstallation, performance will definitely increase significantly. The more dirty the old system was, the faster the computer with the new system will work. It’s just that the operating system is designed in such a way that it needs to be reinstalled over time. There are people, even friends, who reinstall their system several times a month. Everyone has their own needs, but personally I would recommend reinstalling Windows at least once every six months. In short, reinstalling the operating system will increase the speed and performance of your computer. I wrote how to reinstall Windows 7

To measure performance, use the Windows Experience Index.

In Windows 7, it is checked in the “System Information” window, in new editions of the OS in the command line.

To view the PC performance index, close all running applications and do the following:

    • press Win+X → “Command Prompt (Administrator)”;

    • type Powershell → Enter;

    • enter winsat formal, press the Enter button;

  • the test will start. Execution time depends on system performance.

To see the performance rating, enter the command in the PowerShell interface window Get-CimInstance Win32_WinSAT and press Enter. The same command is suitable for requesting a performance evaluation without running a previous test. It is not necessary to run the command line with administrator rights.

To view information about the processor (see), RAM and other hardware, do the following:

    • Press the key combination “Win+R” → a command window will open, enter msinfo32 (relevant for all versions of Windows)

Before moving on to optimization software, clean your computer physically. Disconnect the PC, remove the side cover of the system unit and carefully remove dust from it. It is advisable to use dry wipes.

Blow into hard-to-reach places with a household hairdryer and set to cold air. This needs to be done because dust is the number one cause of computer overheating, and when it overheats, performance decreases.

Computer cleaning software

While running, Windows accumulates a large number of junk files on your hard drive. These are temporary files that were not deleted, system logs and other small things. To clean up, go to This PC, right-click on the system drive and select Properties.

Now click on the Disk Cleanup button (if not in the General tab, check the Tools tab) and wait until Windows shows you a list of files that it can safely delete.

If any item in the list is not checked, Windows is not sure that these files are useless for you and asks you to confirm deletion. To do this, check the boxes next to the items you do not need, and then click on the “OK” button.

IMPORTANT: To free up more space or to completely clean the system, instead of “OK” click the “Clean up system files” button, which will repeat the search, also including the “garbage” of Windows itself - temporary files, backup copies of programs and previous Windows installations .

In addition to junk files, they exist in the Windows registry - a storage of system parameters. To do this, you will need a special optimizer program.

To clean the registry using CCleaner, click on the “Registry” button, then click on “Search for Problems”, the search for problems with the registry will begin. When it ends, click on the “Fix...” button. The program will prompt you to save the current state of the registry.

Decline by clicking “No” (or agree by clicking “Yes”, after which you will be asked to choose a location to save the backup). After that, click on the second button “Correct marked”. When the error correction is finished, close the program.

If you need more functionality, try AVGPCTuneUp. This program is free only during the trial period, after which you will have to pay 900 rubles for use. The function of extending the battery life on a single battery charge may be interesting.

If you decide to use AVG, then immediately after installing the program, scanning your PC will begin. Carefully read what TuneUp shows in the tray and cancel those solutions that do not suit you.
And to clean the registry and run the program from the desktop, click the “Decidelator” button and “Startanalysisnow” in the window that appears. This analysis process can take up to an hour. When finished, click “Runmaintenance”, wait until the PC is cleaned and close the program.

Also, if you install a lot of programs on your computer, some of them are included in startup and now automatically load along with Windows.

The same CCleaner can do such programs, but if you wish, you can do this using the built-in Windows tools.

Optimizing visual effects for PC performance

If the Windows interface itself is slow, your video card cannot cope with the display. This happens on older netbooks and other devices with a built-in video card (see). But these effects can be disabled, which is recommended.

To do this, press the Win+X key combination, which will bring up the context menu. Select “System” → “Advanced system settings” → (on the “Advanced” tab → “Performance”) “Options”

select which visual effects you want to disable or enable. If you don’t want to delve into details, check the boxes as in the screenshot “Smoothing unevenness of screen fonts” - they have little effect on performance and improve the appearance of Windows.

If you do not have a built-in video card, and the Windows interface is still slow, you may not have installed the video driver.

Intel video card drivers are updated by the operating system. For Nvidia graphics cards, follow this link. AMD Radeon owners can.

If you don’t know the manufacturer of your video card, open the case of the system unit and look, it should be written on it.

There are information stickers on laptops and netbooks (see).

Tablets and netbooks are only available with Intel graphics cards. Or, use the AIDA64 program, which will show you the manufacturers and models of PC components.

Disk defragmentation on PC

Due to the nature of hard drive technology, fragments of the same file are often recorded in opposite areas of the HDD. Over time, the number of such fragments begins to increase and the reading speed decreases. You can fix this with defragmentation, which is recommended to be done once a week.

To defragment, open This PC, right-click on the drive and select Properties. Go to the “Service” tab, then click on the “Optimize” button. A new window will appear with a list of hard drives.

Select the system drive in the window that appears and click the “Analyze” button. At the end of the analysis process, you will see the result. If the hard drive fragmentation is less than 5 percent, defragmentation is not required. If it is larger, click on the “Optimize” button and wait until the operation is completed.

IMPORTANT: Defragmenting multi-terabyte disks can take up to six hours.

Optimizing RAM and computer processor

A lack of RAM and processor time manifests itself in the form of “brakes” and lengthy loading of applications, crashes to the desktop with a system alert that requires you to close an overly demanding program.

To solve this problem, get into the habit of closing other programs and unnecessary browser tabs before launching demanding applications, and also clearing the RAM of files remaining in it - either by rebooting or a special memory cleaning program, for example, RAMRush. Install the program, then Russify it by downloading the Russian.lng file and saving it to the address “C:\Program Files (x86)\RAMRush”.

Now launch RAMRush (if it is already running, hover over the program icon in the tray), click “Options” and select Russian in the “Language” field.

To use the program, click the “Start optimization” button. It will display a message about its beginning, and about a minute later - a message about its end and effectiveness. For example, on a computer with 4 GB of RAM that had been running for 20 hours, optimization cleared 869 MB.

IMPORTANT: Using RAMRush may cause instability in other programs, as this utility automatically cleans up memory if there is not enough memory for the main application.

Also, in some cases, an enlarged swap file helps (relevant for Windows X32, since it cannot use more than 3.75 GB of RAM). To increase its size, open the Advanced System Settings window where you turned off visual effects. Now click on the “Options” button (the one in the “Performance” field), go to the “Advanced” tab and click “Change”.

Now uncheck “Automatically select paging file size”, check “Specify size” and enter in the “Original size” field the value of the installed RAM multiplied by two (example: you have 2GB of RAM * 2 = 2048 / 1GB = 1024MB).

In the “Maximum size” field you need to enter the same values; the paging file should be set to fixed, not dynamic. After this, restart your computer.

IMPORTANT: The volume of the paging file is subtracted from the volume of the hard drive, pay attention to the line “Selected drive C → free:***”. If the system has more than 8GB of RAM installed, the page file can be disabled.

If the problem is with only one application, and the rest continue to work fine, you should try increasing its system priority. To do this, call “Task Manager” (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), right-click on the slowing application and select “Details”.

You will be taken to a window with a list of processes. Right-click on the already selected process and select “High” from the “Set Priority” submenu. Also, old applications from the Windows XP era do not know how to use multi-core processors, which is why they slow down. To fix this, instead of “Set priority”, select “Set compliance” and uncheck the boxes except “CPU0”.

The following instructions are for gamers.

How to improve computer performance for gaming

For normal operation of games, the following are required: DirectX, Microsoft .NET Framework, Microsoft C++ Runtime (2008, 2010, 2013), Adobe AIR and Java Runtime. If you install games from Steam/Origin/GOG, you already have this (see).

If you install games from disks or other sources, you need to additionally download everything. All C++ packages are included in RunTimePack, DirectX will update automatically along with Windows, Adobe AIR can be downloaded from here, and the link to Java Runtime.

But before improving performance, it's worth finding out how powerful your PC is currently. To do this, install FRAPS and launch the game that is slowing you down - after that, the number of frames per second that the game produces will appear in the corner of the screen.

The minimum value for a comfortable game is 25–30 FPS (frames-per-second), although 20 will do for turn-based games. The best effect is achieved when the FPS matches the refresh rate of the monitor - then the picture becomes dynamic and “ alive".

Using game optimizers

Apart from RAMRush, which is suitable for heavy applications, there are also dedicated gaming optimizers designed to improve PC performance while gaming.

In addition to clearing RAM, they also disable other programs and even Windows components that consume PC resources in the background, leaving the computer's power free for gaming.

Several years ago, similar applications existed, but only one project remains in development - Razer Game Booster. You can also use Turbo mode from AVGTune-Up, but it is not as effective.

The current version of Razer Game Booster does not work correctly with the Russian version of Windows 10 (some inscriptions are not displayed and the online login function does not work), so if you are using a recent Microsoft OS, you will have to wait for an update to Windows or the program itself. If you are using a previous version of Windows, create a Razer account in the program, add the game to Game Booster and launch it through it.

The effect of acceleration through Gamer Booster differs between computers, and it is worth remembering that the double acceleration indicated on the Razer website is a special case. On a consumer PC, the acceleration will be 20–30%. Also, if you are using a stripped-down version of Windows (Gamer Edition or another similar build), using Game Booster will not give any positive result.

IMPORTANT: If you use other programs (browser, notepad, Word, TeamSpeak) in parallel with the game, Game Booster will close them when the game no longer has enough resources.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would only like to say that any optimization is finite. An office computer from 2008 will not work as well as a premium all-in-one PC, no matter what they do to it. But it is a fact that after all the above operations it will work better than before.

Hello, dear readers of the blog site. Today we will talk about how to make your computer work at full capacity. Surely, you have noticed that over time, your iron friend begins to perform operations more slowly, takes longer to load, and freezes on seemingly simple tasks. This is a problem for all Windows. The simplest solution is to reinstall the operating system. It would seem - what could be simpler? The problem is that you will need to spend time saving personal data. That is, select important information and copy it to a disk or flash drive. But that's not all! After reinstalling Windows, it will take half a day to install all the necessary programs and completely personalize the system. In total, we will spend the whole day on all the work related to reinstalling the operating system.

Therefore, before formatting everything and reinstalling it again, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the following methods that will help increase the performance of your computer.

1. The first and most effective way is removing unnecessary or rarely used programs. Oddly enough, what slows down the system the most is the large number of installed applications. The standard Windows Uninstaller doesn't do its job well - it leaves behind a lot of undeleted files and registry entries. I advise you to use the utility.

2. The second, no less important and no less effective way is removing rarely used programs from startup. How to do this, I wrote here. Thanks to this, Windows loading speed increases significantly.

3. You most likely knew this method without me, but nevertheless, I consider it my duty to remind you of it. Its essence is that You should not run a large number of programs at the same time. Any application takes up system memory, and this can significantly affect performance. Leave open only those programs that you need at a given time.

4. A virus may be the cause of slow or inadequate computer operation. Be sure to (if you still do not have it installed) and do full computer scan.

5. Execute hard drive defragmentation. Usually, this takes quite a long time, so be patient, but still carry out this procedure. The system will thank you very much. To do this in Windows 7, click Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Disk Defragmenter. Next, you need to select the disk, mark it with a checkmark, and press the button Disk Defragmenter.

6. Update Windows. Try regularly. Microsoft releases new patches almost every day that fix problems with the security, usability and reliability of Windows. Thank God, the update process in the “seven” is automated, so no action is required from you. The only thing is, do not forget to enable automatic updates in the control panel.

7. Driver Update. If your computer is far from new, and you have never updated the drivers, then be sure to follow this step. Moreover, new versions are released quite often. Motherboard and video card - for these devices we install new drivers first. I wrote about how to update them correctly and where to download them from here.

8. Another quite effective way is disabling visual effects in Windows. As you know, the “seven” uses the Aero interface, which eats up system resources. If your computer does not have enough RAM, it is better to disable this interface. To do this, go to Control Panel (Start/Control Panel), and write in the search Counters and Productivity Tools, then click on the item of the same name.

In the window that appears, click Setting up visual effects. Here we select the item “Ensure the best performance” and click Apply.

I think you will agree that a fast computer is better than a sluggish and beautiful one.

9. Regularly carry out reboot the computer. It would seem, what could be simpler? But not everyone follows this rule, especially laptop owners. After finishing work, they simply close the lid, thereby putting the computer into sleep mode. A reboot will clear memory and terminate many erroneous processes that were started but not terminated. There are situations when it is difficult to determine the cause of a slow computer. In such cases, rebooting also helps.

10. And finally, you can use the built-in Windows utility called “Disk Cleanup”. She herself will find and delete unnecessary files that slow down the computer. Among them are temporary files, recycle bin, web page visit files and others. To start the program, click Start, in the search field enter Disk Cleanup. Next, select the drive you want to clean. In the window that appears, check the boxes for the types of files that you want to delete. After that, click Delete files.

In this article, I did not write about the fact that you can increase the speed of your computer by increasing RAM or replacing the processor, because this requires financial investment. I also didn’t write about all sorts of miraculous programs that, with one click of the mouse, increase performance a hundred times - I don’t really trust them. The methods described above are simple and definitely work, tested.
