Today I will show you how to make a smooth transition between two photos.
I made a picture in advance and this is the result I got:
In order to get such a picture, I will take two photographs, which I will combine.
I took beautiful background with the sea and a photograph of a girl who was photographed against the background of gloomy trees without leaves.
So let's get started - I will do smooth transition of colors and for this I will follow the steps below:
Step 1
Opening my photos in Photoshop and using the tool Moving drag the girl's photo onto the marine background photo.
I want to reduce the photo of the girl a little and for this I call Free transformation by pressing the keyboard shortcut CTRL+ T.
The frame that appeared around the photo with the girl has nodules for which you can pull and reduce the size of the photo, while you must hold down the key Shift, so that the proportions of the image are not distorted.
Step 2
Now I go to the palette Layers and being on the layer with the girl, click on the icon called Add vector mask.
As we see in the palette Layers on the layer with the girl, a layer mask has formed, which is highlighted with a frame, which indicates that the mask is active and all the work that I will perform will be carried out, namely, on the layer mask.
On the top panel, where all the tool settings are located Gradient i click on arrow next to the tool icon and in the gradient window that appears, I choose radial gradient, which goes from black to transparent.
Now I draw the gradient lines before reaching the girl's shape as shown in the picture (you may have more directions). As you draw a gradient line, the background fades out.
It took me two or three times to draw a gradient line in each of the directions indicated in the picture to achieve the result that you see in the picture below.
Step 4
However, we can notice that with the disappearance of the background belonging to the girl's photograph, the image of the girl itself has also changed somewhat, since in some places it has become translucent.
But it is very easy to fix it.
While on the layer mask, I take a soft round brush white and paint with this brush on the girl.
The white brush restores all the lost areas of the girl's image.

Making a smooth transition between colors

Via the Gradient tool
You are probably familiar with this tool. Therefore, go to the toolbar on the left and select "Gradient".
After the tool is selected, the Gradient settings panel will appear under the main menu, where you can select a gradient template and set Extra options at will.
Unfortunately, the standard set of gradients does not include many templates, so you can use the search and expand your collection, or create your own.
In order for the transition to be exactly color, and not transparent, you also need to set the settings for control point opacity (see screenshot below):
After everything is ready, it remains to apply the changes by clicking "OK" and fill the canvas with a gradient. To do this, create a selection that we want to fill, or apply a gradient to the entire canvas. Just click LMB (left mouse button) in the right place and drag as much as necessary.
Important! Pay attention to which type of fill is selected:
In our case Linear Gradient.
Through the "Layer Mask"

A soft eraser and brush are good for feathering the edges so that the two photos blend well and don't look alien due to the harsh edges.

Soft eraser
Since the eraser tool can be used with brush options, using soft brush you can erase part of the image so that you can see another image, which is a layer below. Using this technique, you can achieve the desired result, but it is just as irreversible as - if you change your mind and decide to combine the images in a different way, you will have to start all over again.
Once you have placed both images you want to merge into one document (each on a separate layer), follow these steps:
1. Drag the image you want to partially erase with the mouse to the very top of the layers palette.
Note
Before erasing, it is helpful to duplicate the layer you will be working with in case you don’t like the result (press Ctrl + J for this). To keep the new layer out of your way, you can turn off its visibility (and turn it on again, if necessary).
2. Select the eraser by pressing the E key and set it to brush mode. To do this, on the options bar, in the Mode drop-down list, select Brush. Then, from the drop-down list of brush presets, select a soft brush. Make sure the Opacity and Pressure are set to 100.
To make the transition even smoother, experiment with the opacity value of the eraser. By lowering the Opacity value, you can create smoother transitions by brushing over the desired area, rather than making individual mouse clicks.
3. Move the mouse pointer over the image and erase the unnecessary part. If you make a mistake or change your mind at some point, use the History palette to go back a few brush strokes, or undo the last operation by pressing the Ctrl + Z key combination.
Soft brushes and layer masks
The alternative to the eraser is the opposite - painting the layer mask with a large soft brush... In this case, you are just hiding part of the picture instead of deleting it.
Let's say you want to emphasize how fast the bike is going. Enhance motion effect You can add a little motion blur to the picture, and then hide some of the blur with a layer mask.
Here's how to create fast motion effect:
1. Open the picture and create a duplicate of the original layer by pressing the key combination Ctrl + J.
2. Select the menu command Filters => Blur => Motion Blur. With this filter, you can create the impression that the subject is moving very quickly. Since the filter blurs the entire image, it becomes difficult to see the desired object in it, so you have to hide part of the blurred layer by adding a layer mask. To add it, click on the button with the image of a circle in a rectangle at the bottom of the palette.
3. Press the B key to select the Brush tool and select a large, soft brush. Set the foreground color to black.
Let me remind you that in relation to layer masks, painting with black hides what we need to do in this case. Take a look at the bottom of the Tools panel and if they show black and white then press the X key until the black indicator is on top. If other colors are selected, first set the default colors by pressing the D key, and then press the X key until the black indicator is at the top.
6. Move the mouse pointer over the image and, working with a brush, hide part of the blurred layer.
Gradient Masks
Set aside the soft brushes. Create smoothest transitions possible it is possible using gradient - soft, gradual transition from one color to another... Methods for combining images using soft brushes and gradients are similar in that the images are combined in one document and then a layer mask is added to the top layer. But instead of painting the mask with a black or white brush, you use a black-to-transparent or black-and-white gradient to smoothly, seamlessly blend from one image to another.
1. Drag the image that should be in the foreground of the collage to the very top of the layers list and add a layer mask to it.
2. Press the G key to select the Gradient tool. On the Options Bar, click the arrow for the drop-down selection list. In the drop-down list, select a black-to-transparent gradient, and in the type group, click on the linear gradient button.
3. In my example, I want the Batman logo on the right to be transparent. To do this, with the mouse button, I click on the border of the logo and hold down the key of the view approximately to the middle of the logo. By releasing the key, I get a smooth transition between images. To improve the quality of the transition, you can apply a gradient over and over.
When dragging, the Photoshop program draws a line representing the width of the transition: the shorter the line (the shorter the distance you drag the pointer), the narrower and harder the transition (there will be no clear border, but you will get something close to it); the longer the line, the wider the gradient and the smoother the transition.
