Connecting a CD changer emulator to Y34. Options

What is it and why is it needed?
If the radio in the car has an input for a CD changer, you can connect a similar adapter to it, it will deceive the radio and it will decide that a changer has been connected to it, and instead of discs, a regular flash drive with music is used. The adapter can be controlled by standard means, including steering from the steering wheel.

Muska has already had several reviews of such adapters, the most famous are the Chinese Yatour.

I decided to go in a non-standard way, I decided to try the Russian Trioma Flipper 2.
Overall rating - excellent, satisfied with the purchase, I recommend.

For details I ask under the cut

Foreword

There is a simple desire - I want to listen to music in the car. On the radio, far from always there is something suitable, carrying a bunch of CDs with you, and constantly recording them, is tired.
I have a GU (Head Unit) in my Peugeot 407 in 2007, later called just a radio tape recorder, without USB, bluetooth, and even without the usual AUX input.

If the car has a regular radio tape recorder that is not tied to controlling any functions of the car, the easiest way is to just buy a new radio tape recorder. A branded radio tape recorder with USB input can be purchased within hundreds of euros. Some more money will have to be spent so that she understands the steering from the steering wheel.

You can poke around and attach an AUX (audio) input, but you still need a sound source, and you will have to forget about steering from the steering wheel.

I have long discarded the options with FM transmitters - I tried a couple of different transmitters, the sound quality was not very good.

There is another way, to connect an aporter to the CD changer input to the radio tape recorder, which will allow you to listen to music from flash drives, controlling the adapter with the standard means of the radio tape recorder, including from the steering wheel. You can find similar adapters from different manufacturers with different parameters and differing in quality, reliability, convenience or price.
The most famous adapter is Yatour. The coolest, perhaps, is the American Grom Audio, which plays, among other things, FLAC. Well, there are a few more devices to the heap - Audiolink, Xcarlink, DMC, Dension.

First of all, I began to look at yatour. On ali it costs from $ 50. But reviews on the Internet dampened the enthusiasm a little. The adapter has a linear output with a fixed level, so the volume level on many radio tape recorders is noticeably lower than from the radio tape recorder. Sometimes unstable work, freezes, criticality to the presence of extraneous files on the flash drive. The number of supported directories - how many disks the radio tape recorder supports, in my case it is 6.

Yatour does not have an official site, Yatour sites on the Internet are sellers' sites. And information has to be collected bit by bit in different places, mainly those who set it to themselves are unsubscribed, but their experience is not always suitable for your radio.
But I was lucky, I came across a Belarusian seller yatour Sergey aka SSD, who answered all my questions, including the specifics of working with my radio tape recorder.
In general, it works, but there may be problems with volume and unstable work. For the first time I heard from Sergey both about Grom Audio and about Triome, which he also sells.

Grom Audio on android, supports FLAC, but no model for my car.

But Trioma Flipper 2 interested. First of all, the ability to adjust the output level (volume). In addition, it has a much more convenient folder organization and there can be many more. And it's much less buggy.
I borrowed a good comparison table between Yator and Trioma

Clarification on Yatura:
1. Extraneous files do not interfere with playback. At least on some firmwares.

So, I made my choice. Trioma !!!
When buying such an adapter, be sure to choose a model for your car. More precisely, under the car radio of your car. Different radio tape recorders may have different changer connectors that are not compatible with each other.

Where can you buy Trioma?

On the manufacturer's website there are those who sell Trioma products. There are no problems with buying an adapter in Russia or Belarus. And in Europe, where it’s easier for me to buy and don’t have to clear customs and pay VAT, prices are twice as high, from 120eur without shipping costs.

I began to look for friends who could bring me an adapter from Russia or Belarus. Found!!! I found a friend from Russia who ordered and brought me an adapter at the beginning of February! Oleg, thanks!

And here is the adapter at my place!

The kit includes the adapter itself, a cable for connecting to the radio and a USB cable.
The length of the cable for connecting to the radio tape recorder is only 40 cm, which immediately imposes restrictions on the location of the adapter in the car - it has to be placed directly behind the radio tape recorder, you cannot even reach the glove compartment with it.
The adapter is about the size of a cigarette box. Simple plastic box with protruding cable for connecting under devices or AUX cable. However, after I connect the adapter to the radio, no one else will see it.
Additionally, I took an AUX cable with a minijack at the end (+ 500r)

Installation

Radio tape recorder RD4, unscrew the two screws with a hexagon and take out the radio tape recorder.

There are two suitable connectors on the back, one of them will not work - checked;)
The photo shows the required connector. In it, the wiring is already connected to the changer, we take out the installed connector and turn on our own.

We connect the cable with the adapter, turn on the ignition and a miracle - everything worked right away !!! Moreover, the volume level is about the same as from the built-in CD.

But then we start to think - where to bring the USB cable. The easiest way in my case was to run the cable under the steering wheel into the small glove compartment to the left of the driver.

The adapter itself was stuck in a niche at the back-left of the radio. There is not much space there, after installing the radio tape recorder in place, the adapter was clamped there with cables, so there was no need to additionally fasten the adapter.

All forums write that the radio requires activating the changer in the service. Everything turned out to be much easier for me. After switching on, the radio tape recorder itself determined that a changer was connected to it and it became possible to select it through the input switch (radio / CD / changer).
As it turned out, activation is needed not for the radio, but for the display, so that it can reflect information for the changer.
But six months ago, I and the Chinese, well done, send a display with all the activated functions. So everything worked for me without additional activation.

Adapter operation

Sound quality. Comparable to a CD player. The standard acoustics in the car are rather mediocre, so you will definitely not hear the difference with the standard CD player on my car.
Turn-on speed... Less than a couple of seconds after turning on the ignition on a USB flash drive with a couple of dozen catalogs. On the forums they write that with several hundred directories, the speed is lower. The adapter remembers where it was playing before it was turned off and starts playing from the same place. This property is valuable for those who like to listen to audiobooks. The adapter remembers the location from the last 4 flash drives /
Switching tracks. Fractions of a second, there is no difference in the same or another directory is the track. There are no extraneous sounds during switching.
Replacing the flash drive. When the radio is working, we take out the USB flash drive and insert a new one. It is determined within a couple of seconds and immediately starts playing. During replacement, a very quiet short trill may sound.

The adapter understands 32 directories, which can contain 32 subdirectories, each of which can contain up to 99 files. But soon I realized that the disk switch only switches the first six disks. Although in Random mode, the adapter sees all directories.

Asked a question on the Trioma forum, support responded very quickly and suggested options for organizing directories. The problem turned out to be that on the RD4 the buttons, although they perform the function of Disc + / Disk-, in fact, they send commands to direct selection of disk 1-6 to the adapter. So these buttons can only switch 6 root directories or 6 subdirectories.
And managing 1024 directories on my radio will not work. You can manage only 32 * 6 \u003d 192 directories;)

The description says that the FF / FR buttons perform a double function - changing directories / subdirectories and rewinding.
But on RD4 Track + / Track- are combined with FF / FR and for the adapter these buttons have a Triple purpose:
1. Short press - Track + / Track-
2. Pressing for 2-3 seconds, releasing when the sound from the current track disappears - switching the directory
3. Long press\u003e 3sec, there is an accelerated muffled sound - rewind
Time is approximate, you need to focus on sound

Even before the purchase, I assumed that I would write down one large mega-flash drive with hundreds of catalogs. But now I see that it is more convenient to have several flash drives with different collections.
I now have this:
1. Russian stage 80-90s
2. Foreign stage 80-90s
3. Instrumental

Total. For relatively little money, I got a bug-free adapter with good sound quality and simple, intuitive controls. I am very pleased with the purchase, Trioma is great !!!

Mini FAQ

Some questions remained outside this review, I decided to take them out to a separate minifak. Here I will also add questions that arise in the comments.
  • What needs to be done in order for the names (file names, tags, or anything at all) to be shown on the display?
  • Triom adapters certainly "see" tags, file names, and folder names. Wherever possible, they display text strings on the standard displays of radio tape recorders: BMW and all vehicles with an optical MOST bus. Perhaps text output for some Toyota / Lexus devices will soon be implemented.
  • CD changers do the job without any problems.
  • I'm afraid you are mistaken: we do not know of external changers other than the models listed above, which cope with this task. Changers built into the head unit are another matter, where the text is output directly to the display controller - this is a completely different mechanism.
  • Is it possible to connect additional devices to the Trioma Flipper 2 adapter?
  • You can connect to the adapter or a cable-adapter AUX-mini-jack 3.5 male

Many car owners are faced with the fact that the head unit does not correspond to modern realities, does not know how to work with USB drives, cannot interface with a smartphone, even just receive sound from an analog input, etc. But now it is convenient to store information on portable digital devices, including carrying your favorite musical compositions with you.

Therefore, the regular player either simply stands in its place, so as not to spoil the look of the dashboard with its absence, or is used as only a radio receiver.

Of course, replacement with more modern equipment is possible, but the price of the solution does not always meet expectations. Therefore, all kinds of devices and assemblies appear on the market that make it possible to fill the missing functionality of a regular player.

One of these tricky devices is the CD changer emulator.

What is it for

The essence of the device is as follows:

1.Many radio tape recorders can work with external CD-changers, that is, they have the necessary interface for this (hardware input that accepts a certain data exchange protocol).

2.The emulator connects to this interface and sends a code that matches the real CD changer.

3.Use the most popular analogue AUX connector as the input point for external devices.

4.Now, by transmitting an analog signal from your smartphone (MP3 player, etc.) to the input of the emulator, you can play music on your native radio without replacing it or radically altering it.

CD changer emulators have one serious drawback - they only work with certain brands of car radios. The fact is that manufacturers use different data exchange standards.

Of course, on the network you can find ready-made emulators with various functionalities that implement the ability to read files from external USB drives, connect via Bluetooth, etc.

But we will focus on the simplest options that you can implement yourself without much difficulty.

General algorithm

1. It is best to design a block based on a programmable microcircuit, so you will be able to implement almost any communication protocol, regardless of the brand and manufacturer of the car radio.

2. The microcircuit must send a specially formed response code that corresponds to the real response of the CD changer. The protocol can be found on the manufacturers' websites or on thematic forums.

3. The emulator can be placed behind the radio or even inside it by connecting to the correct outlet.

4. On the front panel of the radio, it is necessary to find a place for the analog input equipment (this can be a 3.5 mm mini-jack or analog).

The circuit is powered by ATMega8.

To flash it, you need WinAVR (in the example we used the version from 20040720) and AVR Studio (we used 4.12.462 Service Pack 1).

Raw materials (source codes) of the firmware are in the attachment.

The following can be used as ready-made PCB layouts.

In the attachments you can find the compiled firmware modified for Avensis 2000-2002.

For Audi Concert CD

In this case, nothing but the Arduino pro mini board is required.

It can be powered and connected directly inside the radio (due to its miniature size). However, an external programmer is required for the firmware.

A real working sketch can be found in the attachments. The pinout is indicated in the source (can be changed if necessary).

The code is based on the reverse engineering of the radio emulator for VolksWagen, AUDI, SKODA, SEAT.

Music is not mathematics and it is almost useless to argue about its quality. Especially with a professional. Go and prove that Yngwie Malmsteen plays such and such a passage better than Stevie Rae Vaughan. Dudki. These will be subjective opinions. But sound quality is a true scientific discipline that can even be measured. Therefore, it is easy to say that this sound is better and cleaner, and that dirty and soapy one. And if necessary, prove it with numbers, that is, with a frequency response. What are we talking about? About car sound, or rather, about a device called a "CD changer emulator". But first, let's take a quick look at car audio formats.

In the photo, a CD changer for a car is a convenient and necessary thing for a music lover.

Auto audio formats

The highest quality and purest audio signal is reproduced by a vinyl record. Yes, an ordinary gramophone record. And CDs are still very, very far from its quality. Of course, a lot depends on the player, on the pre-amplifier, power amplifier and speakers. But today we are not talking about them. It became inconvenient to carry records in cars, reel-to-reel tape recorders are also too big, and then a new miracle of comfort of the mid-20th century appeared - a cassette tape recorder. The compact device quickly took root in the car, and it is not going to give up yet, because a couple of years ago the wonderful Chinese company Changhe produced minicars with a regular radio with a cassette recorder. So that. The Chinese know a lot about sound quality.

Despite this, at the end of the century, the public began to switch to CDs en masse. Their sound quality was inferior to good cassettes, but the compacts were convenient, small, easily stored, but accumulated very quickly, because they had one big problem - the limited amount of information that could be recorded on them. The same 90 minutes of sounding as on an Agfa or TDK cassette. The glove compartments were packed to capacity, the discs got confused, scratched and worn out due to damage and cracks.

Video review and installation of the emulator YATOUR YT-M06

To somehow mitigate the situation, the car radios began to be equipped with CD changers. They solved the issue of changing discs that could be charged in advance, and after the disc ended, the next one was played. But changers are not holy devices either. In some car models, they occupied a good half of the trunk. It is good if this is the trunk of an Opel Senator, and if a tiny Toyota Yaris ... Then the question arose about the use of real computer digital audio formats in cars. This would give maximum compactness with solid data arrays.

There are only three digital audio formats:

  • sound without compression and without loss of quality (WAV, AIFF);
  • sound with compression, but without loss of sound quality (APE, FLAC);
  • lossy and compressed audio formats (mp3, ogg).

CDs had such sound quality as uncompressed and lossless sound. Therefore, the WAV format remains the most voluminous and highest quality digital sound. The FLAC format is slightly inferior in quality, but the mp3 format has become the champion in popularity. It can be compressed to a disgrace, and then the sound will be greatly cut in frequencies, or it can have quite acceptable compression. Thus, the quality of mp3 is estimated by the size of the data stream, which is measured in kbit / s. The maximum value is 320 kbps. It was digital audio recording formats that made it possible to reduce the linear dimensions of information carriers while maintaining a large amount of musical information.

CD changer emulator

After the digital audio recording formats entered the market, changes have also taken place in car players. Almost all modern radio tape recorders can read the mp3 format, which made it possible to abandon bulky containers with CDs and CD changers, which took up an unreasonable amount of space. For comparison, one compact disc, compressed into mp3 format, takes only 250-300 MB on a digital medium - flash memory or an mp3 player. It would seem that the issue with bulky and unwieldy CDs has been resolved. But the problem remained with how to adapt car head units, which are designed for listening to CDs. There are no options for managing digital media in their control scheme, they can only flip and play tracks on CDs. Of course, you can connect a digital carrier through an additional parallel input, aux, but then you will have to control both the head unit and the digital additional player. And this causes additional inconvenience - extra cords, extra power, extra devices.

To solve this problem for regular radio tape recorders that do not support the mp3 format, a device was developed that connects to the radio tape recorder, and it defines it as a CD changer with all the capabilities of changing discs, changing tracks, full-fledged playback control, which is no different from CD management.

The emulator is connected quite simply according to the attached diagram, and all the work can be done by hand. Emulator YATOUR YT-M06 / M07, for example, supports 999 tracks of any digital format. The folders on digital media are labeled as discs - CD1, CD2, etc. Each disk can store 999 tracks, and the number of virtual disks is limited only by the capabilities of the head unit. Basically, the recorders of Toyota cars, VAG alliance cars, Mercedes, Honda, Chevrolet, support playback of up to 99 such virtual CDs. Moreover, for YATOUR emulators, you can buy additional digital media that are connected to it via USB or via the analog aux input. Thus, by installing an emulator adapter, you can keep the original head unit and provide it with all the modern functions and capabilities of the latest devices. And the sound quality of music in the car is now on the owner's conscience. The head unit allows you to equip the cabin with any speakers with any sound density.

  • Discussion
  • In contact with
The situation is as follows.
There is Gloria HY34 1999, it has a CD changer for 6 discs. Sooner or later, the question arises of recording a new disc or purchasing a fresh CD, since constantly listening to the same thing, even if you like it a lot, is boring.
Having procured the MP3 files of interest to me on the Internet, I start recording an audio CD, but then my laptop refuses to record these particular files, which begins to enrage me greatly. Having fucked up a dozen discs, I make a decision - nafig discs, you need to integrate the MP3 player into the standard system.
Once, being the owner of a 1995 Toyota Crown Majesta JZS155 with a 12-disc changer and a standard monitor, I conducted a similar experiment by installing a transcoder and connecting a DVD player with a USB port to it. For me personally, it turned out extremely stupid. The inconvenience caused by the need to use two remotes nullified all the advantages of additional multimedia capabilities.
In general, I have long considered the option of installing a CD changer emulator. After looking for an hour and a half for information on the Internet on this issue, and another hour looking through the schemes of the Infiniti M45 audio system in the back of the Y34, I come to the conclusion that replacing the standard CD changer with an emulator is easier than a steamed turnip.
And so, an emulator is purchased (in my case, for 2700 rubles, I did not bargain and look for cheaper options)

as you can see in the photo it has a 12-pin connector

but here, every person who has ever shot a CD changer on a Y34 will say that the standard changer has not only a 16-pin connector, but it is also a mother, but a dad is inserted into it

And two questions arise: "Where am I on *****?" and "How to put an emulator in it?"
The answer to the first question is: "Nowhere!" This emulator is intended primarily for connection to a standard head unit, and it has just a 12-pin connector.
The second question is much more interesting.
The 12-pin connector is located on the head unit itself; there is no power in this connector.
We look at the diagram

M88 connector is our 12-pin connector

M109 connector is a 16-pin connector on a CD changer

The question is reasonable: "Where did the food go?"
We look at the diagram

As you can see from the diagrams, power is clearly not supplied from the head unit, therefore, to connect the emulator instead of the standard changer, minor modifications are required.
The main mistake is that some comrades begin to connect the wires by color and, accordingly, get confused. I highly recommend connecting the wires according to their functionality.
On the 12-pin connector of the emulator

1 - LH (-) OUT
2 - LH (+) OUT
3 - RH (-) OUT
4 - RH (+) OUT
5 - empty (there may be a shielding ground, in this case it is not)
6 - earth

8 - REQ
9 - RXD
10 - TXD

On 16 pin male connector

Actually, it remains to cut the chips and connect the wires as intended, BUT !!!
Personally, I did it a little differently. Having spent 300 rubles I bought a splitter

and cut off the mom connector. It should be noted that the numbering of contacts will be mirrored.

Further, at a distance of about 20 mm from the 16-pin connector, I removed the insulation and connected the wires to the 12-pin female connector in sequence (on the left, the contact numbers of the 12-pin connector on the right of the 16-pin connector)
1?1
2?2
3?3
4?4
6 × 15 (since the current consumption is not large, it is possible for 5 contacts)
8?8
9?9
10?10

Next is the most interesting thing,
on the emulator, pins 11 and 12 are empty, so I removed two pins from the splitter's dad connector and soldered them to the separate ACC and BAT wires of the emulator and inserted them into the empty 11 and 12 places of the emulator's dad connector. If I honestly don’t remember which direction, let there be ACC in the 11th and BAT in the 12th.
In this case, we connect the wires of the 12-pin female connector to the 16-pin male
