Long fluffy eyelashes are every girl's dream, but even if you are not the owner of such wealth, in photos your eyes can look flawless and very expressive with the help of Photoshop.

In this tutorial I will show you how to make eyelashes in Photoshop in three ways.

I have broken the lesson “How to make eyelashes in Photoshop” into two semantic parts so as not to overload you with information. Thus, not one lesson will be devoted to this topic, but two.

Perhaps you will stop at the first method of lengthening eyelashes, but I advise you to familiarize yourself with all methods before using any one, because for each specific case, a different method of photo processing is suitable.

In the first part of the tutorial, you will learn how to make eyelashes in Photoshop using ready-made brushes.

In the second part I will tell you what software tools professionals use to achieve a natural increase in the volume of eyelashes. The second part includes two flexible processing methods that allow users to fully regulate the process of eyelash extension.

Method I. How to make eyelashes in Photoshop using brushes

The easiest and most affordable way for beginners does not require any deep knowledge of the program. In just a couple of minutes you can decorate your eyes with gorgeous eyelashes.

At your discretion, you can achieve the natural effect of ordinary mascara eyelashes, or add special depth and drama to your eyes with the help of fantasy, doll or other unusual extravagant eyelashes, with feathers, rhinestones, etc.

Despite the fact that the method is very simple, professional designers or photographers hardly use it. This is due to the fact that professional processing requires an individual approach in each specific case, there is no place for templates.

But for processing home photos and just for fun, the method is very good.
Getting started

Open the photo - Ctrl + O.

The girl in the photo I took as an example has not very expressive eyelashes, even in the form of makeup. Let's see what you can do about it.

Go to the "Layers" palette - F7.

Now there is only one layer with the source in the palette.

Create a duplicate layer - Ctrl + J in order to work with a copy of the photo without making changes to the original, later we will need it to compare the processing result with it.

Create a new empty layer - Ctrl + Shift + N (or click on the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette).

On the toolbar, select the Brush Tool (B).

Zoom in on the image to make it easier to work with the eyes - "Ctrl +" (zoom out - "Ctrl-").

Load ready-made eyelash brushes, install. I have already described how to install brushes in Photoshop in this tutorial.

To make it easier to see the brush prints, set the Brush Display Settings to Large Thumbnail. To do this, in the upper panel of brush settings, click on the small black arrow, and then on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the expanded window.

Choose the brushprint that best suits your application.

I want to achieve the effect of natural lashes, painted with regular mascara. First, select the upper lash brush.

Perhaps the brush you have chosen will not be paired, that's okay, just one angle is enough, then we can mirror it.

To make the eyelashes look natural, hold down Alt and take a sample of the eyelash color from the original photo with an eyedropper. I chose dark brown # 2c191b.

If you want a stronger effect, you can use a darker color.

After choosing the very shape of the cilia, adjust the brush size to the size of the eye, for this it is convenient to use the hotkeys "[" - decrease the diameter of the brush and "]" - increase.

If the direction of the brush is slightly different from the shape of the eye, it doesn't matter - in the future we can turn the eyelashes.

Move the brush to the natural lash line and click.

Here's what I got.

Rotate the eyelashes a little so that they match the shape of the eye - Ctrl + T (Free Transform). When the tool is active, square markers will appear around the image.

Move the cursor to one of the corner markers. After the cursor turns into a semicircular double-headed arrow, we begin to rotate the image.

You can also resize the image by moving the side handles. Hold Shift to maintain proportions while transforming.

After fully adjusting the cilia in shape and direction, press Enter to apply the transformation.

Take the Eraser Tool (E) and erase the extra eyelashes if necessary.

One eye is ready. We do the second. Since there is no paired brush for the left eye in the set, we will work with duplicate eyelashes for the first eye.

Create a copy of the top layer - Ctrl + J.

Transform the layer - Ctrl + T, right-click, in the drop-down menu select "Flip horizontal".

Without applying any transformations, we immediately rotate the image and resize it, then press Enter to apply the transformation.

It is necessary to understand that with each transformation, the original quality of the edited object deteriorates, so it is better to apply all the changes within one transformation.

Now select the top layer and press Ctrl + E (the keyboard shortcut merges the current layer with the bottom one) to merge the two layers with the upper eyelashes into one.

To make the result look more natural, I lowered the Opacity of the general lashes layer to 70% at the top of the layers palette.

Create a new layer - Ctrl + Shift + N.

Draw the lower eyelashes in a similar way: select a suitable print, select the brush size with "[" and "]", transform the image with Ctrl + T.

Duplicate the layer - Ctrl + J, flip the image horizontally with Ctrl + T - right-click "Flip horizontal" and resize it.

For the lower lashes, I lowered the opacity even further, to 60%.

Everything is ready, now select all the layers with eyelashes (you can add an additional layer to the selection using the Ctrl key) and the layer with a copy of the source, right-click on the selection and select "Convert to smart-object". This will allow us to merge all layers into one with the possibility of further editing, plus all the opacity settings will be preserved.

There are now only two layers left in the palette: the source and the processing result. Turn off the visibility of the top layer by clicking on the eye icon opposite the layer thumbnail to compare the resulting image with the original.

Here's what I got:

In this tutorial for beginners, we looked at how to make eyelashes in Photoshop using ready-made brushes. I hope you learned something new and useful for yourself.
