Sony Xperia M2 Aqua - Review of one of the few waterproof smartphones

08.02.2015

Short, formal ...

Lyrical introduction

Have you ever found yourself navigating an unfamiliar city in the pouring rain? I happened once last year. A funny feeling. Himself in a raincoat, so that the body is more or less dry (with the exception of weeping limbs). And the telephone got in full.

I was lucky. On that trip, I, among other smartphones, took with me a waterproof Sony Xperia Z3.

But that case is, of course, exotic. But answering a call in the rain is a common thing. Dropping your phone in water - even more so. I dropped it three times. For a long time, really. Twice in the lake and once in a basin of soapy water.

So for me personally, waterproofing is far from meaningless.

Some synthetic tests:

Built-in flash memory of 8 GB, of which approximately five are initially available. There is support for memory cards. But, unfortunately, normal installation of programs on a memory card is impossible. There are five gigabytes of free - here you can get by with them.

For Android devices, everything is not easy with flash memory. Suppose there is a large, large program (a toy, for example) that takes up, say, one gigabyte. Of this gigabyte, the program itself always occupies no more than several tens of megabytes. Everything else is data. So that's it. In the case of the M2 Aqua, it is possible to transfer the "body" of the program to the memory card. The data always remains in the internal memory.

The set of sensors is pretty ordinary. Compass, accelerometer, light sensor, proximity sensor. There is no gyroscope, just as there is no thermometer and barometer.

Communication with the outside world

LTE is there, it works without problems. The supported ranges are 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20. That is, it seems, there should be no problems in our country.

Wi-Fi dual band, a / b / g / n, 2 + 5 GHz. Everything is OK as well.

Connecting to a computer via USB - only in MTP mode.

It is possible to connect external USB devices (USB-OTG).

There is NFC, there is Bluetooth version 4.0.

MHL / HDMI no.

Screen

IPS-screen with a diagonal of 4.8 "and a resolution of 540x960 pixels.

Well, this is already enough to understand - they were greedy with the screen, they saved money on the screen. The resolution is quite modest by today's standards. And - yes, perhaps you can even feel it. Fonts, especially small ones, do not look elegant in places.

Alas, with coverage - not very good either. And not very much. Oleophobic and does not smell, the screen is constantly in greasy prints, which, moreover, are hard to wipe off. And only with a specially trained cloth. A handkerchief (clean) or even a T-shirt cannot defeat the screen grease.

In the sun, again, the screen behaves mediocre. It also doesn't look black enough. Now, if you put several smartphones side by side in the off state and look at an angle, it is the Aqua screen that will look the most non-black. It's funny to say that the screen of the most budgetary Megafon Login + is even blacker.

Brightness is pretty decent, 370 cd / m2 with 720: 1 contrast ratio (which is not bad either). The minimum brightness for a white picture is too big, over 20 cd / m2. In the dark, this smartphone is not very comfortable.

Color temperature - 8600K.

The sensor is fine. The sensitivity is good, 10 simultaneous touches, etc.

Operating system and other software

Operating system Android 4.4.4 KitKat, proprietary shell from Sony, sets of applications from Google and Sony.

Battery

Despite the not very impressive battery capacity (2330 mAh), the battery test results are quite solid - an average of 134% of the reference. Affected by the small screen resolution. Anyway, they are there at Sony - well-known masters in the art of battery and battery technology.

The complete charger provides an extremely low output current (850 mA, 5V). As a result, the smartphone is charged with it rather slowly - more than four hours.

The camera shoots video in FullHD resolution, 28 frames per second. The quality is also, to put it mildly, so-so. Especially if there is not too much light.

Front camera - nothing can be more modest, only 0.3 MP. The quality is adequate. In short, it is better to forget about its existence altogether.

Sony Xperia M2 Aqua as a GPS Navigator

Smartphone Sony Xperia M2 Aqua cannot be called large by modern standards - its diagonal is 4.8 inches. The dimensions of the device are 140 × 72 mm, the thickness reaches 8.8 mm, and the weight is 147 grams. For comparison, the five-inch LG G3 S turned out to be much thicker, but narrower, shorter and even lighter, while the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, with the same thickness, is slightly higher and 8 grams heavier. The bezels above and below could have made the Xperia M2 Aqua more compact, but here they are traditionally wide. The side frames do not look thick only because of the convex ends, which seem to be cut off from above, but this visual effect does not actually make the smartphone narrower. However, due to these convex frames, the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua phone fits well in the hand, the palm and fingers freely clasp the frames, but it is still inconvenient to operate it with one hand.

The smartphone has a typical Sony design with a well-recognizable round power key on the right side and a volume rocker under it, but in general it is very similar to the Sony Xperia M2, only with stubs. Unlike the flagship models, the backrest is matte here, without glass. Advantages of the coating - the smartphone does not slip out, however, it does not look so "cool" and premium anymore. The bottom end is stylized as one solid speaker, but if you slide your finger over it, you can easily find that the speaker itself occupies only a small area closer to the right corner of the phone.

There are some more unusual details on the body of the smartphone. First, the "Camera" button, with which you can launch the corresponding application and take pictures. It is located on the right side, at the very bottom. Secondly, the strap hole, which is not often found on smartphones. Thirdly, the abundance of plugs, thanks to which the smartphone is protected from moisture and dust. We tested the smartphone for durability, bathed it in water for a while, went to the shower with it - the device coped with the tests with dignity. However, you should remember that there is a potential problem - it is not clear what will happen to these plugs after six months or a year of using the phone. In addition, it is not very convenient to constantly open and close them. For example, the water-resistant Samsung Galaxy S5 mini does not have plugs on the most commonly used headphone and Micro-USB connectors. And the Xperia Z2, Z3, and the company's water-resistant tablets, did not cover their audio jacks with anything.

In general, the smartphone looks good, and the presence of plugs can be considered a price for water resistance. The main body material is plastic, but the Xperia M2 Aqua is built with high quality, it does not creak under pressure. However, dust and fine dirt can accumulate at the junction of the display glass and the frames, but they do not pose a danger to the integrity of the case - they just overlap a little, which makes it seem like there are slots along them.

You can buy the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua in three colors at once: white, black and copper.

Screen - 3.0

The display diagonal of the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua is 4.8 inches. Resolution is perhaps the main drawback of the model, only 960 × 540, and the pixel density is 229 per inch. The picture on such a screen cannot be called clear, and there are many smartphones with HD resolutions on the market, for example, the LG G3 S or Asus Zenfone 5, while they cost a little less.

Matrix type - IPS, viewing angles are not maximum, but rather wide. According to the test results, the screen can be called bright. The maximum measured brightness was 474 cd / m2 - this is a high indicator, but the minimum brightness of the white background is about 25 cd / m2, which means that using the phone in the dark will be uncomfortable. There is no X-Reality mode in the display settings, as on the company's flagships, but there is a smooth white balance adjustment. We also found out that the display "fades" in the sun, but images and texts remain readable, albeit with difficulty. There is an auto-brightness function that works quickly, but, apparently, in an insufficiently wide range of brightness changes.

Unfortunately, the smartphone did not have a glove mode, although it does on the Xperia C3. Apparently, it is designed for water scenarios, and not for a winter of six months. The display glass is scratch-resistant.

Camera

The Sony Xperia M2 Aqua has 8 and 1.1 MP cameras. Available for you are LED flash, autofocus, face detection, image stabilization, HDR mode, panorama shooting and a wide range of settings and modes for a pleasant pastime. The maximum photo resolution is 3264 × 2448 pixels, if you adjust all the parameters yourself. However, it is easier to shoot in "Super Auto", in which the resolution drops to 5 MP.

In addition to the main camera, there is also a 1.1 MP front camera with the ability to shoot VGA video at 30 fps. One of the features is the presence of a separate key on the body, with which you can shoot even in water. This is very convenient, as the touchscreen becomes "insensitive" in water. The detailing of pictures in auto mode is not bad for 5 MP, but in our tests the camera focused for a long time - a certain time passed between frames. In low light, the camera immediately starts to make noise, but it copes well with uneven lighting. Generally good for social media shots, but no more.

The main camera of the smartphone can shoot Full HD video - with a frequency of 30 fps and stereo sound. We also found that there is tracking autofocus when shooting video, but it does not always work quickly and clearly. In addition, a large number of effects are available, the ability to shoot HDR video, add virtual scenes to video, and much more.

Photos from the camera Sony Xperia M2 Aqua - 3.5

Working with text - 5.0

The standard keyboard in the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua is comfortable, thanks to its wide customization options. In particular, it supports the function of continuous text input with strokes (Swype), work with dictionaries (from writing style to individual words you personally typed) and has several covers for the keyboard. In the settings, you can select a telephone keyboard for portrait (vertical) smartphone orientation and also markup additional characters on the keys. There is a separate key to switch to another language. In addition, there is a keyboard mode for one hand: you can move it to the right or left for easier one-handed typing. The keyboard is thought out to the smallest detail, only the not very large size of the icons on the 4.8-inch display can be called inconvenient.

Internet - 3.0

The Sony Xperia M2 Aqua smartphone is preinstalled with Google Chrome, with support for synchronizing tabs with the desktop version. We tested it - the browser is fast. There is no multiple scaling of pages or a separate reading mode. But there is a single scaling for a preselected size - for this you just need to double-click on the screen. In addition, the browser has a search on the page and a traffic reduction mode.

Interfaces

In terms of interfaces, the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua smartphone may well outperform most of the average. The phone offers: dual-band Wi-Fi with Wi-Fi modem mode, Bluetooth 4.0 with low energy consumption and A2DP support, A-GPS with GLONASS support and an NFC chip. There is also support for Russian LTE frequencies (Cat 4, up to 150 Mbps). The Sony Xperia M2 Aqua smartphone works with Micro-SIM cards and micro-SD cards up to 32 GB. It also features a micro-USB 2.0 port with USB-Host support for connecting peripherals. The only thing missing from the typical premium set is MHL for USB and high-speed Wi-Fi.

Multimedia - 3.8

The Sony Xperia M2 Aqua audio player supports many formats and plays MP3, FLAC, WAV files and a number of less popular formats. The Xperia M2 Aqua comes with good headphones, in our opinion, they have a transparent, clean sound, all the instruments are heard in the headphones. In the built-in player, you can customize the sound yourself thanks to a large number of settings. As for the video, everything is fine too, the player did not want to play TS videos and some MKV videos. But he had no problems rewinding the video, as, for example, on the Sony Xperia C3. The built-in video player has a number of settings, including support for internal subtitles.

Battery - 3.1

The Sony Xperia M2 Aqua smartphone has a 2300 mAh non-removable lithium-polymer battery (the same as the Xperia Z1 Compact). In our tests, the battery of the smartphone showed results comparable to the mini-versions of flagships, which is very good since the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua is cheaper. The device played HD video at maximum brightness for 7.5 hours. In the mode of listening to music with the screen off, the device was discharged in 56 hours (more than two days). In the mode of not the most intensive use (Wi-Fi, periodic browsing, a couple of calls per day, music and casual games) the battery lasted for 1-1.5 days.

Performance - 2.2

The Sony Xperia M2 Aqua smartphone is equipped with a mid-range chipset - a quad-core Qualcomm MSM8926 Snapdragon 400, 1 GB of RAM, and the Adreno 305 accelerator is responsible for the graphics. By the standards of Android smartphones, the M2 Aqua works quite briskly, except that the camera starts up for a relatively long time. But when browsing with several open pages, the device showed itself very well - practically without problems, even the animation on the pages looks smooth.

The device is suitable for most games and applications. According to the results of our synthetic tests, the smartphone takes the middle position. In games, the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua performed well, apparently due to the low display resolution. So, we calmly played Dead Trigger 2 and Minion Rush, Nova 3 loaded unexpectedly quickly, but the game slowed down noticeably, and in Asphalt 8 it played normally up to medium settings. In synthetic tests, the smartphone showed results at the level of the mini-flagships of 2014 (HTC One Mini 2, Samsung Galaxy S 5 mini) - in the AnTuTu benchmark, the smartphone received points in the range between 19 and 20 thousand, and in 3D Mark Ice Storm Unlimited - slightly not reaches up to 20,000 points. The filling is far from flagship, but the smartphone works fine and even runs most of the games.

Memory - 3.5

The total amount of internal memory of the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua is limited to 8 GB, about 5 GB is available to the user. Judging by user reviews, many will not have enough of this volume, they will have to buy a memory card. The Sony Xperia M2 Aqua supports microSD cards up to 32GB. In this case, you can make a "hot swap" of the memory card without rebooting - simply by replacing the card under the corresponding cap.

Features:

The smartphone runs on Android 4.4.4 operating system with a proprietary shell from Sony: all standard applications have been redesigned and have an original look. At least for today, the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua is not on the list of smartphones that will receive the update to Android 5.0. The main feature of the device is protection against water and dust, it is certified according to the IP68 standard. Among the features, we note the ability to adjust the white balance on the screen and the presence of NFC with LTE support.

Competitors

In terms of characteristics, the smartphone resembles mini-versions of flagship smartphones, but with a lower resolution. The price of Sony Xperia M2 Aqua for the winter 2015 is 16,990 rubles, this is an unusual, one might say, a niche mid-range product. Among the competitors are the mini-flagships HTC One mini 2 and Samsung Galaxy S5 mini.

HTC One mini 2 boasts the use of metal, higher display resolution, more memory and 13 and 5 MP cameras versus 8 and 1 in the M2 Aqua. But the Sony smartphone is cheaper by several thousand and is protected from water. In terms of battery, filling and interfaces, both models are approximately the same.

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is also waterproof, but without plugs on the headphone jack and even for Micro-USB. The single-symbol version also supports LTE and NFC. The battery turned out to be more durable, the display resolution is higher, as well as the amount of built-in and RAM (16 and 1.5 GB versus 8 and 1 GB). The rest of the smartphones are about the same, and the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua looks like a simpler and more affordable option with a "chip" in the form of water resistance.

Water resistance. The camera was good (old firmware 4.4). GPS is very sensitive and picks up satellites quickly. Powerful and compact (I don't like shovels). Works seamlessly with Bluetooth mice, USB keyboards, flash drives.

The build quality, the strength of the monolith, the size of the screen (everything above is a shovel), the super-quality of the earpiece (the sound is clear and "real"), a spotlight

At first it was very buggy, the problem of auto-rotation got out.

    Scared to break or lose
They also did not find a cover on it (not a book). Bought from a regular M2 - I had to cut (expand) the holes for the headphones / charging.

In firmware 5.1, the camera was broken (and they are clearly not going to fix it).
In firmware 4.4, the orientation sensor was constantly buggy.
The plug on the charging (microUSB) and headphone connectors is not very convenient and wears out, although there have been waterproof connectors without plugs on neighboring Z-models for a long time, it is not clear why the M2 has plugs.
In firmware 5.1, we made protection against deodexing - as a result, it is impossible to customize the stock firmware (as it usually happened before).

Plugs (eventually become unusable and the device no longer becomes aqua), a dictaphone (a complete collapse, it hasn’t gotten worse yet, even a third-party downloaded, something in the system), but not a microphone, to which some interlocutors complain that I’m hard to hear

bad camera (both), after 3 months the rubber band fell off on the charging plugs. after which the phone became ordinary non-waterproof

I knew the camera wasn't very good. But that would be that much ... The phone is less than a year old, but the gum on the cover of the charger connector has already come off. Accordingly, the cap does not hold and flies out. The beauty (

Bothers to constantly open the plugs (to be treated with a wireless headset, however, there is no docking station)
    - The main speaker is not located in a convenient place
    - Not HD screen (although I hardly notice the difference)
    - In cold weather, the sensor does not work well
    - The screen is very lyapaetsya (to be treated with false glass, NOT FILM!)
    - After "bathing" the speaker does not work well (though from the strength of 5-10 minutes)
    - You don't need a lot of preinstalled programs (they can be treated by disabling them normally)

battery drains quickly if you actively use applications

Sony Xperia M2 Aqua was first introduced in August 2014, while sales of this device began even later. Of course, the smartphone can no longer be called some kind of advanced device, but in fact it is still a very, very good option to this day. Oddly enough, but many ignored this device and did not have time to figure out what the advantages of "Sony Xperia M2 Aqua" are and what technical characteristics it has.

Design

In appearance, the smartphone has a rather familiar design, similar to the smartphones released in 2014 - a standard rectangular shape with smooth corners, not too sloping ends, the presence of a completely straight back surface, and the use of the proprietary design concept of Omni Balance.

The original M2 version has a glass back, while the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua has a back cover made of special matte plastic. It will be up to users to decide how much this option is optimal, since plastic seems more attractive to someone, while others prefer glass. If we talk about practicality, the plastic used by Sony Xperia M2 Aqua is much more durable and reliable.

Colour

The device is offered in three basic colors - brown, white and black. If you choose among these devices, then many experts immediately say that you need to definitely give your preference to non-black models, because fingerprints often remain on their surface, and, in principle, the gadget has an extremely simple look.

Convenience

Due to the use of porous plastic with a rough surface, as well as non-sloping edges and somewhat pointed corners, the Sony Ixperia M2 Aqua lies perfectly in the hand and does not even think to slip out during operation. From this point of view, this device looks much better than the Z3 Compact or M2, since these models have a rather slippery body and the smartphone cannot be held securely in the hand. Among other things, do not forget that too smooth edges do not allow it to be conveniently lifted from horizontal flat surfaces.

Dimensions

The dimensions of this smartphone are standard, but many people note that the weight is quite large for a plastic gadget. The front side is protected with specialized glass, while the manufacturers did not provide any clarifying information about this material. The only thing worth noting is that while the specialists tested the technical characteristics in the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua, no chips or scratches were noticed. Likewise, no damage was noted on the back cover.

Housing

The trademark insert of this design is the use of translucent plastic ends on the sides. Due to this, such a smartphone has an attractive appearance and differs somewhat from other devices similar to it in technical and external characteristics.

Special attention should be paid to the build quality of this gadget, since during operation it does not emit any extraneous sounds, and the rear part does not bend up to the battery.

Protection

In Sony Ixperia M2 Aqua, the technical characteristics also differ in one more important feature - the use of specialized protection against moisture and dust. Thus, the device is distinguished by extremely high protection of contacts from excessive accumulation of dust, and according to the developers, this device can function normally under water at a depth of more than a meter. If, for example, there are no plugs in the Z3 model, then the reviews about "Sony Xperia M2 Aqua" say that these plugs are not just there, they really retain moisture quite well.

Of course, dust, in principle, is not a threat to modern gadgets, but the protection of such a device from moisture is undoubtedly its key advantage. Especially such protection becomes pleasant when you consider the cost of "Sony Xperia M2 Aqua". "Messenger", for example, offers to pay 12,500 rubles for this device.

Considering the protection, you should not pay special attention to too wide a framework, as this can be called a certain payback for the fact that the device remains operational regardless of the weather. About "Sony Xperia M2 Aqua" reviews indicate that the device does not stop working even if accidentally dropped into the mud.

Control Panel

At the top of the front panel there is a camera, sensors, and an indicator of missed events. It is worth noting that the speaker is not so loud, but at the same time it provides a very good sound quality. Since it uses increased protection against dust, the design does not allow for the most clear and sonorous sound, but still its quality remains at a fairly high level. Also on the top of the device is a headphone jack, which, like other elements, is initially hidden behind a plastic cap. If necessary, you can connect here accessories for "Sony Xperia M2 Aqua".

There is a microphone under the screen. It is worth noting that, in principle, you will be heard normally, but often about the "Sony Xperia M2 Aqua" customer reviews say that on the other side of the tube the voice is slightly deaf. The loudspeaker is located at the bottom and protected by a metal mesh.

Special attention should be paid to the fact that on the right there are slots for a memory card and a sim card of the microSIM standard, which is quite convenient. Nearby there is also a round power button, which is distinguished by extremely firm and tight pressure, as well as a thin key for adjusting the volume in the phone.

Display

The screen diagonal in this device is 4.8 inches, but the physical size according to the technical parameters is 60x107. For Sony Xperia M2 Aqua, the instruction says that there is a specialized anti-reflective coating on the screen, which allows you to use the device in any conditions, but according to customer reviews, we can say that this coating is far from as effective as it might seem at first glance ... There is also one which is not done in the best way, but it still allows you to simply erase fingerprints, and also provides smooth finger movement.

In "Sony Xperia M2 Aqua" characteristics say that the screen resolution is 540x960 pixels, while the aspect ratio is 16:10. In the process of conducting specialized tests, it was determined that at any value the image still remains too bright, and the gamma also showed itself not in the best way, which gives, for example, too much brightness of pictures in dark scenes, making the overall look blurry or flat. There was also a serious excess of blue, and this was especially true if the device was running at low brightness.

Thus, we can say that the phone "Sony Xperia M2 Aqua" is distinguished by a fairly simple matrix, which makes the image cover with purple or yellow color at a certain angle. Also, the device is far from the best way to show itself in the sun, and even at a slight tilt of the screen, it is almost impossible to distinguish the picture.

Battery

"Sony Xperia M2 Aqua" (photo of which you can see above) uses a non-removable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 2400 mAh. According to the manufacturer, this device can operate for 641 hours in standby mode, 11 hours in talk time, and 37 hours in the process of continuous music playback. If you constantly watch the video, then the device will work for no more than 8 hours.

How in practice?

During the tests, it was determined that, in principle, this information corresponds to reality, and in general the operating time of the gadget is standard for a modern Android smartphone of this class, that is, it works for about 10 hours if used in a relatively active mode with a connection to the internet. If you want to play, then you should count on about two and a half hours if you want to play at full brightness and volume with speaker output.

Specialists often pay special attention to the fact that the company has saved some money on the supplied power adapter, as a result of which for normal charging of the device it will be necessary to keep it connected to the mains for three hours.

Camera

As usual, this smartphone uses two modules at the same time. The rear camera has 8 MP and is equipped with an auto focus function, while the front device is unlikely to please anyone with quality, since it has only 0.3 MP.

Even the main camera module can be described as relatively weak, but in fact, the software development team was able to get the most out of the technology used here. Of course, the details are far from optimal here, but noise reduction works more than well. You can take bright enough pictures at night, which will be free of all sorts of "artifacts", and just as well preserved. Thus, the camera is quite versatile and suitable for different occasions, but you should not expect any incredible results.

There is no point in talking about the front camera, since everyone 10 years ago managed to get acquainted with what a 0.3 MP camera is. Perhaps some, seeing this quality now, will think that their phone is frozen and will start figuring out how to reboot the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua.
