3g 4g modem router wifi. What is the difference between a router and a modem, which one to choose

The review presented to your attention on how to connect a Wi-Fi router via a mobile 3G, 4G modem is a universal method for absolutely any model of a wi-fi router and does not depend on the manufacturer's brand. The only differences are in the design of the interface of the settings section, in the names and location of the settings sections themselves. Attention! Make sure your router has support for mobile modems of the carrier of your choice. You will find this information in the instructions section "device specification" or on the manufacturer's website. This guide is suitable for any provider providing mobile Internet services - Megafon, MTS, Beeline, Yota, Tele2, SkyLink and all other mobile operators!

Setup steps

1. We take your USB modem from the mobile Internet operator and insert and insert it into the USB port on the router, and the Ethernet cable (or patch cord) that comes with the router, the first end into the LAN connector on the router, the second into the network card your computer.

2. On your personal computer (running Windows 7) go to the network settings section, do it along this path: Start => Control Panel => Network and Internet => Network and Sharing Center => Network Connections Management => Changes adapter parameters.

Right-click on the item "Local Area Connection", then "Properties" then to the menu item Internet Protocol which is "TCP / IPv4" and select the following items "IP automatically" and "DNS server automatically"

Save, click "OK".

3. On the router (on its reverse side) we find the IP address that is used to enter the router's admin panel (as a rule, it is 192.168.0.1), and accesses (often login: admin, password: admin)

4. Open your favorite browser and write where the address bar is 192.168.0.1 (or the other one that is indicated on the router), and log in.

5. We look at the router menu and find the item "USB modem" (or maybe 3G / 4G or USB settings, etc. options), activate it and enter the data for your operator in the fields indicated in the image.

I will give a list of settings for most mobile operators, but let me remind you for the current settings, look for your mobile operator.

A 4g mobile router is no longer a luxury, but an urgent need for those who constantly need to be online. If you prefer to lead an active lifestyle with frequent travels and trips out of town, then without this accessory it will be difficult for you to stay in touch. You can either buy a 4g wifi router tailored for a specific telecom operator, or a universal device that works with any of them. In this article, we will discuss the second type, as the characteristics and capabilities of universal routers seem to be more successful.

If you decide to purchase a router with Wi-Fi support, then this rating will help you decide on the choice of the optimal 4g modem and not waste time and nerves on low-quality routers like MTS Connect 4g lte wi fi router. Let's start our review.

Huawei E5172

The device is easy to use and available for fine adjustment. By purchasing this gadget, you can also receive calls to a wired phone by inserting a SIM card into the router. An important advantage is a stable signal.

The disadvantages include a number of not the wisest technological solutions, as a result of which, when operating the modem, you can experience a number of negative emotions, the LTE antenna connector could not be located so deeply, and the absence of an external wi-fi antenna can prevent distributing the Internet to several family members. The price of this device starts from 4000 rubles.

Huawei E5776

A more modern device from the same brand. Signal quality, capacious battery - everything is in place. By taking care of the selection of firmware, you can significantly increase the productivity of the device.

Among the minuses, it is worth noting a strange solution in the design of the case in the form of gloss - most likely you will need a cover for comfortable use, otherwise scratches cannot be avoided. The increased tendency to overheat also does not give pleasant minutes of interaction with this 4g mobile router. The lack of support for a number of bands forces us to be more careful when choosing an operator. The price of this router ranges from 7,500 to 11,000 rubles.

NETGEAR AC785

A good signal level with not the most impressive dimensions, coupled with the ability to distribute the Internet not only through wi-fi, but also a USB cable will certainly help this router find a buyer. The screen is informative, and the ability to reset the traffic counter on a specific day will help you avoid overspending.

But the battery leaves much to be desired, overheating is quite capable of draining your battery pretty quickly, but if you use a gadget from an outlet, this drawback loses its relevance. In general, this device is devoid of the classic shortcomings of its Chinese counterparts, and therefore you will feel more reliable at a critical moment when you need to connect a second communication source. The price bites - from 9,000 rubles.

Huawei E589

The ability to connect an external antenna will greatly facilitate the life of those users who have to surf the Internet in hard-to-reach places, but this is fraught with fast battery discharge. Compactness and good design will nicely complement other advantages of the router. With a good signal, you can well count on excellent performance of 70-80 megabits.

What I didn't really like when using this gadget is the constant overheating of the battery, which can ruin the experience with it. The price starting at 5500 rubles looks pretty reasonable.

Huawei E5372

With this device, you can not only distribute, but also receive a signal from available wi-fi networks, which will help you save traffic. Connectors for external antennas come in handy if the signal does not suit you, but this option will be redundant in a good reception area. Ease of use will allow even people far from technology to master the device, and therefore this router can be considered a good gift for your elderly relatives.

The sad quality of this modem is a weak signal when distributing wi-fi, and therefore we do not recommend using it as a backup access point to the Internet in case you are interested in a solid distance to the device from which you will connect to the network. The cost of the device is about 4500 rubles.

ZTE MF90

A budget router from a Chinese manufacturer. A compact and fairly capacious modem is well suited for the first acquaintance with LTE routers. Some users speak of this modem in a purely critical tone, but upon careful consideration of the capabilities of this device, you are unlikely to find yourself in a similar situation.

A not very strong signal, even when an external antenna is connected, is generally sufficient for web surfing, but the unfortunate color and material of the case, unfortunately, will force you to clean it much more often than when choosing another router. The quality of the firmware also raises questions, but do not forget that the price for this router is about 2500 rubles, and when buying from an operator it is half as much, so if you need a budget router, this is a good choice.

ZTE MF823D

Another "whistle" so beloved by operators and annoying people who demand maximum performance from a router. The pluses include the variability of connection to the internal network and end devices, as well as the low price, which is about 2,500 rubles.

But the lack of support for all LTE bands is a significant drawback that does not allow you to be confident in the reliability of the device at the right time. The lack of connectors for external antennas adversely affects the maximum possible signal. Like the previous one, this router does not offer outstanding characteristics, but it does not ask for extra money either.

Huawei E3372h

A router loved by many operators, and due to the ease of unlocking and changing the provider, it is also loved by the consumer. An important advantage is a large community of users who modify the firmware, thereby significantly improving the gadget's performance. Operation in all current LTE bands and the ability to connect external antennas will greatly simplify the work with the device.

This 4g modem would look like a device without weak points, but a technological solution in such a wide case prevents the use of adjacent USB ports, which can complicate interaction with your equipment. The price is not high - about 2500 rubles.

TP-Link TL-MR6400

A multi-tasking device that combines the functionality of a NAT router, a 4-port switch, and a built-in 3G / 4G modem allows you not to use additional devices and stay connected all the time. By inserting a SIM card into this device, the user will be able to have uninterrupted access to the Internet both at home and in the office or on vacation. Stylish design and modern beamforming technology, which allows the device to independently route the signal and increase its power, will be a pleasant addition.

The disadvantages of the router are obvious - this is no longer a "baby" that fits in your pocket, but a full-fledged router, supplemented by the function of receiving an LTE signal. The lack of instructions in Russian can become an insurmountable barrier for people who do not speak foreign languages. This device is not as easy to use as a whistle, and therefore you may need the help of a specialist in configuring routers. The price for a router is from 6,500 rubles, which is an excellent indicator for such a powerful gadget.

TP-LINK M7350

Another TP-LINK, but already supporting LTE-ADVANCED. A good and informative screen and a capacious 2550 mAh battery, which promises to work at least 10 hours without recharging, look like a good offer relative to the market.

Despite the promised speed of up to 300 megabits, the router in any case will not show a higher speed than your operator offers, and therefore the Advanced prefix should not be misleading. TP-LINK has traditionally released a solution focused on value for money and also provided the option for buyers to choose their preferred operator on their own. Not a bad resume for a $ 5,000 router.

In this review, we will tell you about 4G routers that we consider to be the best today, and these 4G routers from Huawei, which occupies a leading position in this equipment in the world. There are other popular manufacturers of 4G routers and modems such as ZTE, D-link, Asus, Kinetic, but the Chinese company HUAWEI is in the lead in this non-public competition.

Stationary 4G wifi routers are routers that require a constant connection to the outlet, but this is one and not a big drawback that is insignificant over their advantages, such as an increased WIFI coverage area, reliable signal reception from 4G 3G operators, the number and variety of ports, their performance expressed in quantity simultaneously connected devices to them, which in some cases amounts to up to 64 devices simultaneously connected via the WIFI network, another of the indisputable advantages is that these routers are sharpened for constant operation and do not overheat and do not freeze.

1st.Place in it takes HUAWEI B525s-23a This is a stationary 4G router with CAT6 support, which means that this router supports speeds up to 300 Mbps, while the rotuer also supports all previous standards such as GSM such as 3G 2G, etc. the coverage area of the WiFi network, this router can cover up to 250 meters, while the speed over the internal network via WiFi is up to 1300 Mbps, simultaneously supports connecting up to 64 devices via WIFI, which allows you to meet the needs of a fairly large house as well as coffee of a restaurant and small business, there is also a wired connection via LAN ports of which 4 pcs., there is a USB port for an external hard drive for network access from all connected devices. The built-in IP-telephony module for connecting regular and DECT telephones through the RG-11 port will allow you to provide communication from IP operators. When using in an area of uncertain or weak signal coverage, cellular operators provide for the connection of more powerful 4G 3G antennas with support for MIMO technology.

In our opinion, this router is the most attractive offer on the 4G mobile router market today.

2nd. The place is occupied by a 4G 3G WiFi router, which has already proven itself for several ice of confident operation and excellent characteristics HUAWEI B315s-22 it is inferior to the leader of this rating in several parameters, such as the data transfer rate in the 4GLTE channel, which is 150 Mbit / s, the number of simultaneously connected devices is already 32 devices via WIFI, the presence of additional ports such as LAN 4 pcs, USB 1 pc and a built-in IP telephony module It is also possible to connect external 4G 3G antennas with MIMO technology. In fact, the B525s-23a is an upgraded version of the B315s-22.

3rd. Place takes HUAWEI B310s-22 This is a stripped-down version of the B315S-22 in terms of speed characteristics, it is similar to the b315s-22, but in the WiFi coverage area it is reduced to 200 meters and the number of ports such as LAN 1 and a port for connecting a phone to use the built-in IP telephony module. And all the same possibilities for connecting more powerful antennas to improve the quality of mobile signal reception from mobile operators.

As for stationary 4G routers, which are best used indoors to ensure stable and fast work on the Internet, receiving signals from cellular operators and distributing them over their own WIFI network in the home and surroundings, in this review we finish and move on to 4G mobile routers with built-in travel batteries for temporary work equipment and outdoor use where there is no way to plug it into an outlet.

Portable 4G WiFi routers with a battery are used so that you can quickly organize wifi access to the Internet in any place, while traveling and in the car. These routers can provide a WIFI coverage area up to about 30 meters, which is not enough for a permanent access point, but more than enough for a trip or a car, also these 4G / LTE routers help to provide Internet for those devices that do not provide for the installation of a SIM card, while saving is achieved because you can use several devices at once but pay for one SIM card.

1st place in our ranking of 4G wifi portable routers, we gave Huawei E5577cs-321 since this model became the most massive in sales in 2017 and, in our opinion, is also waiting for it in 2018 due to a balanced set of characteristics.

Huawei E5577cs-321 has a 1500 mAh battery, which allows it to work in the LTE network for up to 6 hours without recharging in standby mode for up to 300 hours, the speed of this router in 4G Cat4 is up to 150 Mbps, while the router also supports all previous standards such as 3G 2G, you can connect via WIFI to the E5577cs-321 at the same time up to 10 devices at both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. The E5577 also has one more important feature when using it in places where the signal is not surely received is the ability to connect an external MIMO 4G 3G antenna with a TS9 connector to it, there must be 2 of them to work as a MIMO antenna, although it is possible to use one of the connectors, any of yours choice they are equal. You can also use the HUAWEI HiLink application to manage settings or send SMS via a router, this simplifies the work with the settings of the router if you use a mobile device, tablet or smartphone. It is worth saying that the Huawei E5577cs-321 has a 1.45 "screen where you can see the battery charge level, signal reception level, the number of connected devices and SMS notification.

2nd place in our rating of portable 4G wifi routers took Huawei E5573cs-322 this router operates in 4GLTE networks at speeds up to 150 Mbit / s, while the router also supports all previous GSM standards such as 3G 2G, the router is equipped with a replaceable 1500 mAh battery, up to 16 such devices can be connected via WiFi at 2.4 GHz like tablets, phones, etc. The compact size allows you to always have it with you!

Outside of the rating, we wanted to mention a budget multifunctional USB 4g wifi router-modem that does not fall into one category Huawei E8372h-153 which is in the form of a USB stick, although larger than any modern USB stick. This router is perfect for providing the Internet for a small room or car. The router receives power from USB and distributes WIFI to 10 devices at the same time LTE4G speed up to 150 Mbit / s.The E8372h-153 also has connectors for connecting an external MIMO 4G 3G GSM antenna, which significantly increases the area of application of this 4G modem router.

In this review, we tried to highlight the main positive qualities of each 4G router to solve your tasks.

Hello! I already once wrote an article in which I talked about. I wrote about possible options. In this article, I want to dwell in more detail on the choice of a router that will work with a USB 3G modem. Let's consider some of the nuances so that later, after purchasing the equipment, there would be no problems.

I have experience in setting up two different routers that have worked successfully (and one is still working) with USB modem from Intertelecom. This article will be written on this experience and on the information from the comments on this site. Now everyone is actively pursuing the Internet in villages, where, as a rule, there is no way to connect a regular cable Internet. And it is also not always possible to carry out ADSL, even if there is a telephone line. Why are there in the villages, even outside the city, there may be similar problems with the Internet.

But, in these cases, wireless 3G (4G) Internet usually helps out. Now the prices are no longer very high. This is probably the only way out when there is no way to conduct a wired Internet. But even here not everything is so good 🙂, from one USB modem, only one computer or laptop can work. And phones, tablets, TVs and other miracles of modern technology cannot work with a wireless modem. Give them Wi-Fi, or at least a network cable connection.

So, you have more than two devices that need to be connected to the Internet, and the Internet itself is one USB modem? It's okay, just buy and configure a router that can work with these USB 3G (4G) modems. You just connect the modem to the router, set it up, and the router already distributes the Internet to all devices, via Wi-Fi, or via a network cable if, for example, there is no Wi-Fi in the computer. But, if you do not want to lay a cable from the router to the computer, then you can buy a USB Wi-Fi receiver, for more details see the article.

Almost all well-known manufacturers, such as: Asus, Tp-Link, D-Link, Zyxel, Tenda have released several models of routers that work well with most popular 3G (4G) modems.

Here, this is the whole point, with most modems, not all.

What you need to know when choosing a router for a 3G (4G) modem?

As I wrote above, all routers that support USB modems do not support all modem models. Simply put, it may turn out that you already have a modem, you bought a router, for example, the same RT-N56U (not a cheap device) and he simply does not know how to work with your modem. As a result: several days of painful setup, hundreds of attempts to flash the router and fly into the wall 🙂.

To avoid all this, before buying, you need to find out whether the router you have chosen will work with the modem that you already have or that you are going to buy. It is very important!

Choosing a router with USB 3G support

Choosing a router is not difficult now. Go to some popular online store and see all the devices that support USB 3G. Usually, in the description, it is stated like this: WAN Port: USB 3G... This means that the router is friendly with USB modems. Or go to any regular computer store and ask a consultant.

You probably want me to advise something? Well look, it worked for me for some time TP-LINK TL-MR3220, about the setting of which I wrote in the article ““. But, after about a month and a half, it broke down, stopped detecting the modem. And the one with which he worked - Novatel U720, and I also tried to connect a modem from Kyivstar (a model like ZTE MF180s, I don't remember exactly)... But the TP-LINK TL-MR3220 worked well and is inexpensive and works with a lot of modems.

I replaced it with Asus RT-N13U (Rev.B1), which I wrote about setting in this article -. Excellent router for the price! With Novatel U720 modem (provider Intertelecom, Ukraine) made friends very quickly. There were no problems at all. By the way, this winter, he worked at a temperature of about - 10 degrees (this is in the place where the router and modem are)... And it seems like nothing, alive 🙂.

TP Link

But, these two models (which I wrote about above) are already a little outdated, although TP Link TL Mr3220 and its older brother TP Link TL Mr3420 are still very popular. There is also TP-LINK TD-W8968, which is also worth considering, and a small TP-Link TL-MR3040. And the prices are very good. In terms of price / quality ratio, TP Link is probably the leader.

Asus

If you want something more serious, then I recommend taking Asus (but it will also be more expensive)... For example RT-N65U, RT-AC56U, RT-N56U, RT-AC66U. These are expensive routers, to be honest, I don’t know if it makes sense to take such a “machine” to work with a USB modem. I would buy something simpler, even from Asus, for example the small Asus WL-330N3G (but for a large number of different devices, I would advise taking a full-fledged router).

Zyxel

This manufacturer also has interesting and popular models: Keenetic Giga II, Zyxel Keenetic II, Zyxel Keenetic Omni, Zyxel Keenetic 4G II.

See also Tenda, D-Link, Edimax. As I already wrote, there is plenty to choose from. There should be no problems here.

Checking the compatibility of the router and modem

It is very important! If you are going to buy only a router, you already have a modem, then you need to understand whether they are compatible. As a rule, each manufacturer (for each router model) there is a page that lists the supported modems and providers.

You need to find out the model of your modem. It is the model, but the "4G modem from MTS", or "Modem Beeline" (as they usually write to me in the comment), this is not a model.

After you have already chosen a router and know which one you will buy (or already have) a modem, then you can check them for compatibility.

Here are some pages where you can view lists of supported modems:

For Asus, Tenda and others, I still haven't found a list of supported modems (maybe you know?)... Therefore, here there are two options: either we take the phone, call the support service (router manufacturer) and ask about the compatibility of certain models. Or we type in Google about the following request “Keenetic Giga II and Novatel U720” (router and modem model)... And see what information is there. Perhaps someone has already tried to make these two devices friends.

Once you are sure of the compatibility of your chosen devices, you can buy and customize. there shouldn't be any problems. Unless, right away.

Answers to some popular questions

Does the router use the internet when devices are not connected?

I met such a question sometime in the comments. The problem was that the router itself was using the Internet when all devices were turned off. I understand that 3G Internet is usually limited, but those few megabytes that the router pumps out are not scary. Simply, he needs to check if there is an Internet connection. Several megabytes are accumulated per day. But I don't think it's scary.

Is it possible to place a router with a modem in the cold?

In order to improve the quality of reception, it is often necessary to place the router and modem in places where the network is better and more stable. You can find the best coverage with the program (by connecting the modem to the laptop, and when you are finished testing the network, then connect to the router).

So, usually, this is an attic, a veranda, etc. Where it is cold in winter. It is difficult to answer specifically here, but my router (Asus RT-N13U (Rev.B1) and the modem successfully transferred the temperature of about -10 degrees. I don't turn them off, they work all the time. It seems that everything is fine, but anything can be 🙂. The main thing is that there is no moisture. And in plastic bags, it is better not to wrap them.

Can I use USBan extension cable for connecting a modem to a router?

Can. But, if it is possible to do without an extension cable, then it is better to connect the modem directly. Also, if you notice any problems: disconnections, low speed, bad signal, etc., then try removing the USB extension cable.

I have an extension cord somewhere over two meters and everything is fine. Moreover, the extension cord is the simplest and cheapest.

Afterword

I hope I was able to fully answer the question about choosing a router with support for wireless modems.

If you have any questions or additions, then ask, do not hesitate 🙂.

In this article I want to talk about ASUS router models that support 3G and 4G modems. I recently published an article in which I wrote about routers with support for USB modems. But, there I considered models from different manufacturers, and in this article we will only talk about ASUS routers, and in more detail.

In a nutshell, what does it mean to support 3G / 4G modems. This is when we can connect a regular USB modem to the router, through which it will connect to the Internet, and distribute this Internet to our devices via a Wi-Fi network. Such a router is suitable for those who connect to the Internet via a 3G USB modem. If you have such an Internet, then you probably know that we can connect the modem itself to only one computer. And accordingly, Internet access will be from one device.

And what if we have several computers, and even phones with tablets. In this case, you can buy a special router with modem support, connect the modem to the router, and set up the Internet. And all our devices (laptops, PCs, smartphones, tablets) will already receive Internet from the router via Wi-Fi, or a network cable. I myself use such a connection, and, by the way, I also have an ASUS router. Model RT-N18U. Only the modem I now have is Huawei EC 306-2. I didn’t take a picture of it, I took another one, it was rewound with duct tape.It looks something like this:

And if for some reason you do not want to buy a router, and you have a laptop or PC with a Wi-Fi module, then you can try to distribute the Internet from your computer. Here is an instruction: how to distribute Wi-Fi from a laptop if the Internet is via a USB modem.

This article wouldn't make sense if you could just buy any router, connect a USB modem to it, and everything would work. The fact is that not all router models support an Internet connection via 3G / 4G modems. And even if the router has such an opportunity, it is not a fact that it will work specifically with your modem.

Now we will figure out which ASUS router model you can buy to work in tandem with a USB modem. I will write how to determine whether a router is suitable for your modem (since you most likely already have a modem)and how to set it up.

Which ASUS router to choose to work with a 3G modem

In this regard, I really like ASUS. They have almost all routers (and maybe all) that with USB ports support 3G / 4G modems. I think this is very cool. After all, if there is a USB port, then the matter is most likely only in the software. So why not make support for modems. This is the case with other companies. There are USB ports, but no support. On select models only.

Once again, I want to highlight two important points that I wrote about above. We will understand on them:

 • Choosing a router model that support 3G modems.
 • Checking the compatibility of the ASUS router with the modem.

As for the support for USB modems, in the characteristics of routers, this point is usually indicated by the item "WAN: 3G / 4G". At the same time, routers support an Internet connection over a regular network cable.

Let's list all models of ASUS routers to which you can connect 3G / 4G modems (I took information from the official website): RT-N14U, RT-N10U B, RT-N18U (I have one), RT-N56U, RT-AC68U, RT-AC56U, RT-AC87U, RT-N56U B1, RT-AC51U, RT-AC55U, DSL- AC56U, RT-AC1200G +, RT-AC88U, RT-AC3100.

As you can see, the choice is very large. For any request, and for any wallet. The only thing I would recommend is to take a router with Wi-Fi 5G support. I got a little excited by buying my ASUS RT-N18U. It does not support the new standard. If interested, you can read a detailed article on choosing routers.

How to determine the compatibility of a router with a modem

This is a very important point. Otherwise, the router may simply not see your USB modem after connecting. Or, not connect to the internet. Therefore, before purchasing, be sure to check that the router supports your modem.

First of all, find out the model of your modem. The model is usually indicated on the case of the modem. The official website has a page that contains all the modems that ASUS routers are compatible with. Here is the link: https: //www.asus.com...s_3G4G_support/. Go ahead and look for your modem in the list. You can use page search Ctrl + F.

If you don’t find your model, you can google something like this request "router model + modem model". Perhaps you will find something interesting and useful. Further, you can call ASUS support and check with them. Well, if not, then look at routers from other manufacturers.

I can say for sure that the router will work with Huawei EC 306-2 and Novatel U720 (Intertelecom) modem. This is verified. Everything works very stable. True, it all depends on the modem and the operator. Since the wireless internet itself is not very stable.

Setting up a connection via a 3G / 4G modem on an ASUS router

Everything is very simple there. In addition, the control panel is the same on all models. Therefore, everything can be configured according to the instructions that I wrote using the example of setting up the ASUS RT-N18U router.

As far as I remember, the router began to distribute the Internet immediately after connecting the modem to the USB connector. The settings there look like this:

Choose, buy, customize, you will succeed. Even if you live in a village, outside the city, and you have the opportunity to connect only wireless 3G / 4G Internet, then you can easily make a Wi-Fi network in your house and connect all your devices. Moreover, the Internet is fast now, especially 4G. And 3G is enough even for Smart TV, if a good tariff, modem, signal and base station are not loaded. For higher speed, you can install an antenna for the modem, or tune the modem itself for better reception through the AxesstelPst EvDO BSNL program.

You can ask in the comments. Always happy to help. And I will be very grateful if you write about the compatibility of your router and modem. If you have already configured and everything works.
